An artificial Ant Colony System (ACS) algorithm to solve general-purpose combinatorial Optimization Problems (COP) that extends previous AC models [21] by the inclusion of a negative pheromone, is here described. Several Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) were used as benchmark. We show that by using two different sets of pheromones, a second-order co-evolved compromise between positive and negative feedbacks achieves better results than single positive feedback systems. The algorithm was tested against known NP-complete combinatorial Optimization Problems, running on symmetrical TSP's. We show that the new algorithm compares favourably against these benchmarks, accordingly to recent biological findings by Robinson [26,27], and Gruter [28] where "No entry" signals and negative feedback allows a colony to quickly reallocate the majority of its foragers to superior food patches. This is the first time an extended ACS algorithm is implemented with these successful characteristics.
One of the major motifs in collective or swarm intelligence is that, even though individuals follow simple rules, the resulting global behavior can be complex and intelligent. In artificial swarm systems, such as swarm robots, the goal is to use systems that are as simple and cheap as possible, deploy many of them, and coordinate them to conduct complex tasks that each individual cannot accomplish. Shape formation in artificial intelligence systems is usually required for specific task-oriented performance, including 1) forming sensing grids, 2) exploring and mapping in space, underwater, or h…
This paper introduces a novel idea for representation of individuals using quaternions in swarm intelligence and evolutionary algorithms. Quaternions are a number system, which extends complex numbers. They are successfully applied to problems of theoretical physics and to those areas needing fast rotation calculations. We propose the application of quaternions in optimization, more precisely, we have been using quaternions for representation of individuals in Bat algorithm. The preliminary results of our experiments when optimizing a test-suite consisting of ten standard functions showed that…
Numerical Association Rule Mining is a popular variant of Association Rule Mining, where numerical attributes are handled without discretization. This means that the algorithms for dealing with this problem can operate directly, not only with categorical, but also with numerical attributes. Until recently, a big portion of these algorithms were based on a stochastic nature-inspired population-based paradigm. As a result, evolutionary and swarm intelligence-based algorithms showed big efficiency for dealing with the problem. In line with this, the main mission of this chapter is to make a histo…
Navigating networked robot swarms often requires knowing where to go, sensing the environment, and path-planning based on the destination and barriers in the environment. Such a process is computationally intensive. Moreover, as the network scales up, the computational load increases quadratically, or even exponentially. Unlike these man-made systems, most biological systems scale linearly in complexity. Furthermore, the scale of a biological swarm can even enable collective intelligence. One example comes from observations of golden shiner fish. Golden shiners naturally prefer darkness and sc…

We present a newly developed -Gaussian Swarm Quantum-like Particle Optimization (q-GSQPO) algorithm to determine the global minimum of the potential energy function. Swarm Quantum-like Particle Optimization (SQPO) algorithms have been derived using different attractive potential fields to represent swarm particles moving in a quantum environment, where the one which uses a harmonic oscillator potential as attractive field is considered as an improved version. In this paper, we propose a new SQPO that uses -Gaussian probability density function for the attractive potential field (q-GSQPO) rathe…

With the rapid upliftment of technology, there has emerged a dire need to fine-tune or optimize certain processes, software, models or structures, with utmost accuracy and efficiency. Optimization algorithms are preferred over other methods of optimization through experimentation or simulation, for their generic problem-solving abilities and promising efficacy with the least human intervention. In recent times, the inducement of natural phenomena into algorithm design has immensely triggered the efficiency of optimization process for even complex multi-dimensional, non-continuous, non-differen…

We explore the relation between memcomputing, namely computing with and in memory, and swarm intelligence algorithms. In particular, we show that one can design memristive networks to solve short-path optimization problems that can also be solved by ant-colony algorithms. By employing appropriate memristive elements one can demonstrate an almost one-to-one correspondence between memcomputing and ant colony optimization approaches. However, the memristive network has the capability of finding the solution in one deterministic step, compared to the stochastic multi-step ant colony optimization. …
Swarm intelligence optimization algorithms can be adopted in swarm robotics for target searching tasks in a 2-D or 3-D space by treating the target signal strength as fitness values. Many current works in the literature have achieved good performance in single-target search problems. However, when there are multiple targets in an environment to be searched, many swarm intelligence-based methods may converge to specific locations prematurely, making it impossible to explore the environment further. The Brain Storm Optimization (BSO) algorithm imitates a group of humans in solving problems colle…

Conventional tracking solutions are not feasible in handling abrupt motion as they are based on smooth motion assumption or an accurate motion model. Abrupt motion is not subject to motion continuity and smoothness. To assuage this, we deem tracking as an optimisation problem and propose a novel abrupt motion tracker that based on swarm intelligence - the SwaTrack. Unlike existing swarm-based filtering methods, we first of all introduce an optimised swarm-based sampling strategy to tradeoff between the exploration and exploitation of the search space in search for the optimal proposal distribu…

We propose an approach of open-ended evolution via the simulation of swarm dynamics. In nature, swarms possess remarkable properties, which allow many organisms, from swarming bacteria to ants and flocking birds, to form higher-order structures that enhance their behavior as a group. Swarm simulations highlight three important factors to create novelty and diversity: (a) communication generates combinatorial cooperative dynamics, (b) concurrency allows for separation of timescales, and (c) complexity and size increases push the system towards transitions in innovation. We illustrate these thre…

Swarm intelligence is the collective behavior emerging in systems with locally interacting components. Because of their self-organization capabilities, swarm-based systems show essential properties for handling real-world problems such as robustness, scalability, and flexibility. Yet, we do not know why swarm-based algorithms work well and neither we can compare the different approaches in the literature. The lack of a common framework capable of characterizing these several swarm-based algorithms, transcending their particularities, has led to a stream of publications inspired by different as…

Optimized spatial partitioning algorithms are the corner stone of many successful experimental designs and statistical methods. Of these algorithms, the Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation (CVT) is the most widely utilized. CVT based methods require global knowledge of spatial boundaries, do not readily allow for weighted regions, have challenging implementations, and are inefficiently extended to high dimensional spaces. We describe two simple partitioning schemes based on nearest and next nearest neighbor locations which easily incorporate these features at the slight expense of optimal placemen…

Algorithms implementing populations of agents which interact with one another and sense their environment may exhibit emergent behavior such as self-organization and swarm intelligence. Here a swarm system, called Databionic swarm (DBS), is introduced which is able to adapt itself to structures of high-dimensional data characterized by distance and/or density-based structures in the data space. By exploiting the interrelations of swarm intelligence, self-organization and emergence, DBS serves as an alternative approach to the optimization of a global objective function in the task of clusterin…

In the past decades, the rapid growth of computer and database technologies has led to the rapid growth of large-scale datasets. On the other hand, data mining applications with high dimensional datasets that require high speed and accuracy are rapidly increasing. An important issue with these applications is the curse of dimensionality, where the number of features is much higher than the number of patterns. One of the dimensionality reduction approaches is feature selection that can increase the accuracy of the data mining task and reduce its computational complexity. The feature selection m…

Furthermore, by using local and global pheromone update rules our method ensures the balance between exploitation and exploration. On top of this, to make our method more efficient we combine progressive neural architecture search with weight reusability. Furthermore, due to the nature of ACO our …

Beetle antennae search (BAS) is an efficient meta-heuristic algorithm. However, the convergent results of BAS rely heavily on the random beetle direction in every iterations. More specifically, different random seeds may cause different optimized results. Besides, the step-size update algorithm of BAS cannot guarantee objective become smaller in iterative process. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes Beetle Swarm Antennae Search Algorithm (BSAS) which combines swarm intelligence algorithm with feedback-based step-size update strategy. BSAS employs k beetles to find more optima…
Radiologists today play a key role in making diagnostic decisions and labeling images for training A.I. algorithms. Low inter-reader reliability (IRR) can be seen between experts when interpreting challenging cases. While teams-based decisions are known to outperform individual decisions, inter-personal biases often creep up in group interactions which limit non-dominant participants from expressing true opinions. To overcome the dual problems of low consensus and inter-personal bias, we explored a solution modeled on biological swarms of bees. Two separate cohorts; three radiologists and five…

The article considers the problem of the optimal control of a wind power plant based on fuzzy control and automation of generating the fuzzy rule base. Fuzzy rules by experts do not always provide a maximum power output of the wind plant and fuzzy rule bases require an adjustment in the case of changing the parameters of the wind power plant or the environment. This research proposes the method for optimizing the fuzzy rules base compiled by various experts. The method is based on balancing weights of fuzzy rules into the base by the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The experiment has sh…

In this paper, we combine two isolate populations of PSO to forge the Adaptive Intelligence Optimizer (AIO) which harnesses the advantages of a bi-population PSO to escape from the loca…
Taking inspiration from nature for meta-heuristics has proven popular and relatively successful. Many are inspired by the collective intelligence exhibited by insects, fish and birds. However, there is a question over their scalability to the types of complex problems experienced in the modern world. Natural systems evolved to solve simpler problems effectively, replicating these processes for complex problems may suffer from inefficiencies. Several causal factors can impact scalability; computational complexity, memory requirements or pure problem intractability. Supporting evidence is provid…

The process continues until a suitable solution is found. Since there are infinite solutions to the problem, it appears convenient to define some optimality criteria so as to measure the relative goodness of the different solutions. This paper intends to develop a preliminary least-cost section design model that follows the recommendations in the A…

Methods of general applicability are searched for in swarm intelligence with the aim of gaining new insights about natural swarms and to develop design methodologies for artificial swarms. An ideal solution could be a `swarm calculus' that allows to calculate key features of swarms such as expected swarm performance and robustness based on only a few parameters. To work towards this ideal, one needs to find methods and models with high degrees of generality. In this paper, we report two models that might be examples of exceptional generality. First, an abstract model is presented that describe…
