We study the prospects for constraining the nuclear parton distribution functions by small-x deep inelastic scattering. Performing a global fit of nuclear parton distribution functions including a sample of pseudodata representing expected measurements at the planned LHeC collider, we demonstrate that the accuracy of the present nuclear parton distributions could be be improved substantially. We also discuss the impact of flavour-tagged data.
The prospects for a measurement of nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) at the Large Hadron--Electron Collider are discussed in the light of recent progress made in the front of global analysis of nuclear PDFs.
Deep Inelastic Scattering would be brought into the unexplored TeV regime by the the proposed Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN. Its rich physics program, includes both precision Standard Model measurements to complement LHC physics as well as studies of QCD in the high energy limit. The present proceeding reports on studies included in the updated LHeC Conceptual Design Report. We study the impact of LHeC simulated data on Parton Distribution Functions uncertainties. We also assess the LHeC potential to allow the determination of the strong coupling constant $α_{S}$, at per-mille level a…
The potential of the LHeC, a future electron-proton collider, for precision Deep Inelastic Scattering measurements is reviewed with particular emphasis on the reduction of uncertainties on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and on the measurement of $α_s(M_Z)$. The interpretation of possible Beyond Standard Model (BSM) signals at the LHC is crucially dependent on precise knowledge of the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) and the uncertainties on PDFs and $α_s(M_Z) $are a limiting factor. The LHeC project, running in parallel with later stages of LHC running, would prov…

We calculate cross sections for inclusive dijet photoproduction in electron-nucleus scattering in the kinematics of the future EIC and the possible LHeC, HE-LHeC, and the FCC using next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD and nCTEQ15 and EPPS16 nuclear parton density functions (nPDFs). We make predictions for distributions in the dijet average transverse momentum ${\bar p}_T$, the average rapidity $\barη$, the observed nuclear momentum fraction $x_A^{\rm obs}$, and the observed photon momentum fraction $x_γ^{\rm obs}$. Comparing the kinematic reaches of the four colliders, we find that an …
The LHeC and the FCC-he will open a new realm in our understanding of nuclear structure and the dynamics in processes involving nuclei, in an unexplored kinematic domain. We review some of the recent studies as shown in the update of the 2012 LHeC CDR, including the determination of nuclear parton densities in the framework of global fits and for a single nucleus, inclusive and exclusive diffraction and the unique capabilies of these high-energy colliders for probing QCD in the non-linear regime of phase space.
The nucleon and nuclear longitudinal structure functions are determined by the Kharzeev-Levin-Nardin (KLN) model of the low $x$ gluon distribution. The behavior of the gluon distribution ratio $R_{g}={G^{A}}/{AG^{p}}$ and the ratio $R_{L}^{total}={F_{L}^{A-total}}/{AF_{L}^{p-total}}$ in this processes are found. The heavy longitudinal structure function ratios in eA processes at the LHeC region are discussed. Heavy contributions to the ratio of the total longitudinal structure function are considerable and should not be neglected especially at smaller $x$ of the LHeC project. In the KLN model …
The status of the global fits of nuclear parton distributions (nPDFs) is reviewed. In addition to comparing the contemporary analyses of nPDFs, difficulties and controversies posed by the neutrino-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering data is overviewed. At the end, the first dijet data from the LHC proton+lead collisions is briefly discussed.
We present the reweighting of two sets of nuclear PDFs, nCTEQ15 and EPPS16, using a selection of experimental data on heavy-flavor meson [D0, J/psi, J/psi from B and Upsilon(1S)] production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC which were not used in the original determination of these nuclear PDFs. The reweighted PDFs exhibit significantly smaller uncertainties thanks to these new heavy-flavor constraints. We present a comparison with another selection of data from the LHC and RHIC which were not included in our reweighting procedure. The comparison is overall very good and serves as a validat…
In this talk, I overview the recent progress on the global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nuclear PDFs). After first introducing the contemporary fits, the analysis procedures are quickly recalled and the ambiguities in the use of experimental data outlined. Various nuclear-PDF parametrizations are compared and the main differences explained. The effects of nuclear PDFs in the LHC p-Pb hard-process observables are discussed and some future prospects sketched.
New hard-scattering measurements from the LHC proton-lead run have the potential to provide important constraints on the nuclear parton distributions and thus contributing to a better understanding of the initial state in heavy ion collisions. In order to quantify these constraints, as well as to assess the compatibility with available nuclear data from fixed target experiments and from RHIC, the traditional strategy is to perform a global fit of nuclear PDFs. This procedure is however time consuming and technically challenging, and moreover can only be performed by the PDF fitters themselves.…
We discuss consistency of the nuclear effects between the electromagnetic and weak interactions. In order to study a possibility of different nuclear effects in the neutrino DIS process, double differential cross section data are compared with these values obtained by the HKN07 nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). Discrepancies are found in the small and large-$x$ regions, and difference of kinematical value $y$ dependence exists between the $ν$ and $\barν$ data around $x=0.35$. Moreover, we study statistical significance of the neutrino DIS data in each $x$ bin and discuss about the…
We present a perturbative QCD analysis concerning the production of high-pT dijets in p+Pb collisions at the LHC. The next-to-leading order corrections, scale variations and free-proton PDF uncertainties are found to have only a relatively small influence on the normalized dijet rapidity distributions. Interestingly, however, these novel observables prove to retain substantial sensitivity to the nuclear effects in the PDFs. Especially, they serve as a more robust probe of the nuclear gluon densities at $x>0.01$, than e.g. the inclusive hadron production. We confront our calculations with the r…
In this paper we present a study of in-medium jet modifications performed with JEWEL and PYTHIA 6.4, focusing on the uncertainties related to variations of the perturbative scales and nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) and on the impact of the initial and crossover temperature variations of the medium. The simulations are compared to LHC data for the jet spectrum and the nuclear modification factor. We assess the interplay between the choice of nuclear PDFs and different medium parameters and study the impact of nuclear PDFs and the medium on the jet structure via the Lund plane.
Predictions of the top-pair production cross section in electron-proton (ep) collisions at the future circular collider hadron-electron (FCC-he) and the large hadron electron collider (LHeC) in the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) approximations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) are presented. Numerical results for the top structure functions and the ratio of structure functions are computed at the renormalization scale $μ^{2}=Q^{2}+4m^{2}_{t}$ in the collinear generalized double asymptotic scaling (DAS) approach. These results are presented in terms of the eff…
In this talk, we discuss the compatibility of different deeply inelastic neutrino-nucleus data sets and the universal nuclear PDFs. This is an issue that has lately been investigated by different groups but the conclusions have been surprisingly contradictory. While some studies have found a good overall agreement between the nuclear PDFs and the neutrino data, others have claimed for an incompatibility. Here, we demonstrate that the independent neutrino data sets from NuTeV, CHORUS and CDHSW collaborations differ in the absolute overall normalization and that it is not possible to accurately …
We present a new global QCD analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions. In addition to the most commonly analyzed data sets for deep inelastic scattering of charged leptons off nuclei and Drell Yan di-lepton production, we include also measurements for neutrino-nuclei scattering as well as inclusive pion production in deuteron-gold collisions. The emerging picture is one of consistency, where universal nuclear modification factors for each parton flavor reproduce the main features of all data without any significant tension among the different sets.
We evaluate the uncertainties due to nuclear effects in global fits of proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) that utilise deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan data on deuterium targets. To do this we use an iterative procedure to determine proton and deuteron PDFs simultaneously, each including the uncertainties in the other. We apply this procedure to determine the nuclear uncertainties in the SLAC, BCDMS, NMC and DYE866/NuSea fixed target deuteron data included in the NNPDF3.1 global fit. We show that the effect of the nuclear uncertainty on the proton PDFs is small, and that the in…
The recent global analyses of the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) lend support to the validity of the factorization theorem of QCD in high-energy processes involving bound nucleons. With a special attention on our latest global analysis EPS09, we review the recent developements in the domain of nuclear PDFs.
In this article we obtain a new set of nuclear parton distribution functions (nuclear PDFs) at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD. The common nuclear deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) data analyzed in our study are complemented by the available charged-current neutrino DIS data with nuclear targets and data from Drell-Yan cross-section measurements for several nuclear targets. In addition, the most recent DIS data from the Jefferson Lab CLAS and Hall C experiments are also added to our data sample. For these specific datasets, we consider the imp…
Studying the structure of nucleons is not only important to understanding the strong interactions of quarks and gluons, but also to improving the precision of new-physics searches. Since a broad class of experiments, including the LHC and dark-matter detection, require Standard-Model backgrounds with parton distribution functions (PDFs) as inputs for disentangling SM contributions from potential new physics. For a long time, lattice calculations of the PDFs (as well as many hadron structures) has been limited to the first few moments. In this talk, we present a first direct calculation of the …
We discuss the two most recent global analyses of nuclear parton distribution functions within the nCTEQ approach. LHC data on $W/Z$-boson, single-inclusive hadron and heavy quark/quarkonium production are shown to not only significantly reduce the gluon uncertainty down to $x\geq10^{-5}$, but to also influence the strange quark density. The latter is further constrained by neutrino deep-inelastic scattering and charm dimuon production data, whose consistency with neutral-current experiments is also re-evaluated.
As data become more precise, estimating theoretical uncertainties in global PDF determinations is likely to become increasingly necessary to obtain correspondingly precise PDFs. Here we present a next generation of global proton PDFs (NNPDF4.0) that include theoretical uncertainties due to the use of heavy nuclear and deuteron data in the fit. We estimate these uncertainties by comparing the values of the nuclear observables computed with the nuclear PDFs against those computed with proton PDFs. For heavy nuclear PDFs we use the nuclear nNNPDF2.0 set, while for deuteron PDFs we develop an iter…
We analyze experimental data of nuclear structure-function ratios F_2^A/F_2^{A'} and Drell-Yan cross section ratios for obtaining optimum parton distribution functions (PDFs) in nuclei. Then, uncertainties of the nuclear PDFs are estimated by the Hessian method. Valence-quark distributions are determined by the F_2 data at large x; however, the small-x part is not obvious from the data. On the other hand, the antiquark distributions are determined well at x~0.01 from the F_2 data and at x~0.1 by the Drell-Yan data; however, the large-x behavior is not clear. Gluon distributions cannot be fixed…
I review the current status of global analysis of nuclear parton distributions and discuss some near-future prospects. I also advocate proton-nucleus (p-$A$) measurements at the LHC with $A\ll 208$ from the viewpoint of nuclear parton distributions.
We investigate the potential of inclusive-jet production in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to improve our current knowledge of nuclear parton density functions (PDFs). We demonstrate that the kinematic reach is extended similarly to inclusive DIS, but that the uncertainty of the nuclear PDFs, in particular of the gluon density at low Bjorken-x, is considerably reduced, by up to an order of magnitude compared to the present situation. Using an approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (aNNLO) calculation implemented in the program JetViP, we also make pr…
Nuclear parton distribution functions (nuclear PDFs) are non-perturbative objects that encode the partonic behaviour of bound nucleons. To avoid potential higher-twist contributions, the data probing the high-$x$ end of nuclear PDFs are sometimes left out from the global extractions despite their potential to constrain the fit parameters. In the present work we focus on the kinematic corner covered by the new high-$x$ data measured by the CLAS/JLab collaboration. By using the Hessian re-weighting technique, we are able to quantitatively test the compatibility of these data with globally analyz…
We compare predictions of nCTEQ15 nuclear parton distribution functions with proton-lead vector boson production data from the LHC. We select data sets that are most sensitive to nuclear PDFs and have potential to constrain them. We identify the kinematic regions and flavours where these data can bring new information and will have largest impact on the nuclear PDFs. Finally, we estimate the effect of including these data in a global analysis using a reweighting method.
We report on EPPS16 - the first analysis of NLO nuclear PDFs where LHC p-Pb data (Z, W, dijets) have been directly used as a constraint. In comparison to our previous fit EPS09, also data from neutrino-nucleus deeply-inelastic scattering and pion-nucleus Drell-Yan process are now included. Much of the theory framework has also been updated from EPS09, including a consistent treatment of heavy quarks in deeply-inelastic scattering. However, the most notable change is that we no longer assume flavour-blind nuclear modifications for valence and sea quarks. This significantly reduces the theoretic…
We have presented the results of our next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nuclear PDFs) [Phys. Rev. D 93 (2016) 014026, arXiv:1601.00939 [hep-ph]] using all available neutral current charged-lepton ($\ell ^\pm$ + nucleus) deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) data as well as Drell-Yan (DY) cross-section ratios $σ_{\rm DY}^{A}/σ_{\rm DY}^{A^\prime}$ for a variety of nuclear targets. We have studied in detail the parametrizations and the atomic mass (A) dependence of the nuclear PDFs at NNLO at the input scale, $Q_0^2 = 2 \, {\rm GeV^2}$. Our {\…
We present an updated global analysis of collinearly factorized nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. In comparison to our previous fit, EPPS16, the present analysis includes more data from proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider: 5TeV double-differential CMS dijet and LHCb D-meson data, as well as 8TeV CMS W$^\pm$ data. These new data lead to significantly better-constrained gluon distributions at small and intermediate values of the momentum fraction $x$, confirming the presence of shadowing and antishadowing for gluons in larg…
In this review talk I discuss the latest developments in the DGLAP-based global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs), focusing on the recent EPS09, nCTEQ and DSSZ global fits. I also briefly review the recent analysis for assigning a spatial dependence to the globally analysed nPDFs, resulting in the new sets EPS09s and EKS98s ("s" for spatial). With these, one can now compute nuclear hard-process cross sections and estimate their nPDF-originating uncertainties in different centrality classes for the first time consistently with the global nPDF fits.
Nuclear parton distribution functions (nuclear PDFs), collinearly factorizable in perturbative QCD (pQCD), are currently extracted most reliably from global analyses of experimental data. Recently, the progress in this field has been driven mainly by the new data from LHC proton-lead collisions. I will review the progress in using data from LHC Run 1 and 2 and also hint at some opportunities and challenges that we face during LHC Run 3.
We report on the progress in updating our global analysis of nuclear PDFs. In particular, we will discuss the inclusion of double differential 5.02 TeV dijet and D-meson measurements, as well as 8.16 TeV W-production data from p-Pb collisions at the LHC. The new EPPS21 analysis will also involve recent JLab data for deep-inelastic scattering. As a novel aspect within our approach, we now also quantify the impact of free-proton PDF uncertainties on our extraction of nuclear PDFs.
I review recent progress in the extraction of unpolarized parton distributions in the proton and in nuclei from a unified point of view that highlights how the interplay between high energy particle physics and lower energy nuclear physics can be of mutual benefit to either field. Areas of overlap range from the search for physics beyond the standard model at the LHC, to the study of the non perturbative structure of nucleons and the emergence of nuclei from quark and gluon degrees of freedom, to the interaction of colored probes in a cold nuclear medium.
We quantify the impact of unpolarized lepton-proton and lepton-nucleus inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) cross section measurements from the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) on the proton and nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs). To this purpose we include neutral- and charged-current DIS pseudodata in a self-consistent set of proton and nuclear global PDF determinations based on the NNPDF methodology. We demonstrate that the EIC measurements will reduce the uncertainty of the light quark PDFs of the proton at large values of the momentum fraction $x$, and, more significantly…
We critically examine uncertainties in parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large x arising from nuclear effects in deuterium F2 structure function data. Within a global PDF analysis, we assess the impact on the PDFs from uncertainties in the deuteron wave function at short distances and nucleon off-shell effects, the use of relativistic kinematics, as well as the use of less a restrictive parametrization of the d/u ratio. We find that in particular the d-quark and gluon PDFs vary significantly with the choice of nuclear model. We highlight the impact of these uncertainties on the determina…
We show how theoretical uncertainties due to nuclear effects may be incorporated into global fits of proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) that include deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan data on nuclear targets. We specifically consider the CHORUS, NuTeV and E605 data included in the NNPDF3.1 fit, which used Pb, Fe and Cu targets, respectively. We show that the additional uncertainty in the proton PDFs due to nuclear effects is small, as expected, and in particular that the effect on the $\bar{d}/\bar{u}$ ratio, the total strangeness $s+\bar{s}$, and the strange valence distribution…
We present updated nCTEQ nuclear parton distribution functions with errors including pion production data from RHIC. We compare them with the results of other groups and present selected LHC applications.
We discuss the prospects of diffractive dijet photoproduction at the EIC to distinguish different fits of diffractive proton PDFs, different schemes of factorization breaking, to determine diffractive nuclear PDFs and pion PDFs from leading neutron production.
A brief overview of the global DGLAP analyses of the nuclear parton distribution functions is given. Although all the current global nPDF sets describe $R_{F_2}^A(x,Q^2)$ well in the large-$x$ region where the data exist, variations between their parton distributions can be substantial.
We discuss the implications of the preliminary CMS dijet data from 5.02 TeV pp and pPb collisions for gluon PDFs of the proton and nuclei. The preliminary pp data show a discrepancy with NLO predictions using for example the CT14 PDFs. We find that this difference cannot be accommodated within the associated scale uncertainties and debate the possible changes needed in the gluon PDF. A similar discrepancy is found between the CMS pPb data and NLO predictions e.g. with the EPPS16 nuclear modifications imposed on the CT14 proton PDFs. When a nuclear modification ratio of the pp and pPb data is c…
We study nuclear effects in charged current deep inelastic neutrino-iron scattering in the frame-work of a chi^2 analysis of parton distribution functions. We extract a set of iron PDFs and show that under reasonable assumptions it is possible to constrain the valence, light sea and strange quark distributions. Our iron PDFs are used to compute x_{Bj}-dependent and Q^2-dependent nuclear correction factors for iron structure functions which are required in global analyses of free nucleon PDFs. We compare our results with nuclear correction factors from neutrino-nucleus scattering models and cor…
We review the current status of the global DGLAP analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions, nPDFs, focusing on the recent EPS09 analysis, whose output, EPS09NLO, is the best-constrained NLO nPDF set on the market. Collinear factorization is found to work very well in the kinematical region studied. With the error sets released in the EPS09 package one can compute how the nPDF-related uncertainties propagate into factorizable nuclear hard-process cross sections. A comparison with the other existing NLO nPDF sets is shown, and the BRAHMS forward-$η$ hadron data from d+Au collisions are d…
We present results of our recent EPPS16 global analysis of NLO nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). For the first time, dijet and heavy gauge boson production data from LHC proton-lead collisions have been included in a global fit. Especially, the CMS dijets play an important role in constraining the nuclear effects in gluon distributions. With the inclusion of also neutrino-nucleus deeply-inelastic scattering and pion-nucleus Drell-Yan data and a proper treatment of isospin-corrected data, we were able to free the flavor dependence of the valence and sea quark nuclear modifications …
The p+Pb and Pb+Pb runs at the LHC have opened a possibility to investigate the validity of collinear factorization in a clearly higher center-of-mass energy scale than earlier in nuclear collisions. Indeed, some processes that have been measured routinely in p+p($\overline {\rm p}$) collisions and utilized for years in free proton PDF fits, can now finally be reached also in the nuclear case. Such new data are expected to provide conclusive answers concerning the universality of the nuclear PDFs. In this talk, I will contrast some of the first p+Pb and Pb+Pb measurements to the predictions ba…
We have studied the prospects of using the Drell-Yan dilepton process in pion-nucleus collisions as a novel input in the global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). In a NLO QCD framework, we find the measured nuclear cross-section ratios from the NA3, NA10 and E615 experiments to be largely insensitive to the pion parton distributions and also compatible with the EPS09 and nCTEQ15 nPDFs. These data sets can thus be, and in EPPS16 have been, included in global nPDF analyses without introducing significant new theoretical uncertainties or tension with the other data. In pa…
We report global analysis results of experimental data for nuclear structure-function ratios F_2^A/F_2^{A'} and proton-nucleus Drell-Yan cross-section ratios sigma_{DY}^{pA}/sigma_{DY}^{pA'} in order to determine optimum parton distribution functions (PDFs) in nuclei. An important point of this analysis is to show uncertainties of the distributions by the Hessian method. The results indicate that the uncertainties are large for gluon distributions in the whole x region and for antiquark distributions at x>0.2. We provide a code for calculating any nuclear PDFs at given x and Q^2 for general us…
In this talk, we shortly report results from our recent global DGLAP analysis of nuclear parton distributions. This is an extension of our former EKS98-analysis improved with an automated $χ^2$ minimization procedure and uncertainty estimates. Although our new analysis show no significant deviation from EKS98, a sign of a significantly stronger gluon shadowing could be seen in the RHIC BRAHMS data.
We report the results of a Monte Carlo global QCD analysis of unpolarized parton distribution functions (PDFs), including for the first time constraints from ratios of $^3$He to $^3$H structure functions recently obtained by the MARATHON experiment at Jefferson Lab. Our simultaneous analysis of nucleon PDFs and nuclear effects in $A=2$ and $A=3$ nuclei reveals the first indication for an isovector nuclear EMC effect in light nuclei. We find that while the MARATHON data yield relatively weak constraints on the $F_2^n/F_2^p$ neutron to proton structure function ratio and on the $d/u$ PDF ratio, …
A new QCD analysis for nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) is presented. The framework of the analysis, including the form of the parameterization as well as the included DIS data sets, are discussed. The results of this QCD analysis are compared to the existing nPDF sets and to the fitted data. The presented framework is based on an open-source tool, xFitter, which has been modified to be applicable also for a nuclear PDF analysis. The required modifications are covered as well. Finally, an outlook for the next …
