In plasma physics, a hybrid fluid-kinetic model is composed of a magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) part that describes a bulk fluid component and a Vlasov kinetic theory part that describes an energetic plasma component. While most hybrid models in the plasma literature are non-Hamiltonian, this paper investigates a recent Hamiltonian variant in its two-dimensional configuration. The corresponding Hamiltonian structure is described along with its Casimir invariants. Then, the energy-Casimir method is used to derive explicit sufficient stability conditions, which imply a stable spectrum and suggest nonlinear stability.
Hamiltonian models for the first three moments of the drift-kinetic distribution function, namely the density, the fluid velocity and the parallel pressure, are derived from the Hamiltonian structure of the drift-kinetic equations. The link with the water-bag closure is established, showing that, unlike the one-dimensional Vlasov equations, these solutions are the only Hamiltonian fluid reductions for the drift-kinetic equation. These models are discussed through their equations of motion and their Casimir invariants.
The confined, quasi-two-dimensional guiding center plasma and a system of interacting line vortices in an ideal fluid are examples of Hamiltonian systems with infinite interaction distances. The existence of metastable states with negative specific is investigated by standard entropy maximization of the thermodynamic limit of vortices as they become infinitesimal and form a continuous field. We find metastable states and suggest that these imply a runaway reaction leading to a rapid expansion of a confined plasma or fluid similar to the rapid collapse of globular clusters in astrophysics.
These notes summarize a series of works related to the numerical approximation of plasma fluid problems. We construct so-called 'Asymptotic-Preserving' schemes which are valid for a large range of values (from very small to order unity) of the dimensionless parameters that appear in plasma fluid models. Specifically, we are interested in two parameters, the scaled Debye length which quantifies how close to quasi-neutrality the plasma is, and the scaled cyclotron period, which is inversely proportional to the magnetic field strength. We will largely focus on the ideas, in order to enable the re…
We describe gas dynamic and plasma effects for transient plasma jets under different conditions. Our Unified Flow Solver (UFS) is evaluated for simulations of mixed continuum-rarefied flows, transient gas expansion dynamics and collisionless plasma expansion. We identify further advances that are required for hybrid fluid-kinetic simulations of laser-ablation and EEE-induced plasma jets.
Kinetic model of three component, weakly ionized, collisional plasma with a beam of neutral particles is developed. New dispersion relations for linear perturbations are derived and analyzed in various limiting cases.
We study the effects of plasma \b{eta} (ratio of plasma pressure to magnetic pressure) on the evolution of kinetic plasma turbulence using fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of decaying turbulence. We find that the plasma \b{eta} systematically affects spectra, measures of intermittency, decay rates of turbulence fluctuations, and partitioning over different channels of energy exchange More specifically, an increase in plasma \b{eta} leads to greater total heating, with proton heating preferentially more than electrons. Implications for achieving magnetosheath like temperature ratios a…
Plasmas with anisotropic electron velocity distribution functions are needed for the controlled study of kinetic plasma instabilities in the laboratory. We demonstrate that such plasma can be produced using ultrashort laser pulses via optical-field ionization (OFI). We experimentally show this control by using Thomson scattering as a diagnostic to probe the characteristic electron velocity distributions using linearly and circularly polarized laser pulses to ionize helium. Furthermore the He plasma produced by a circularly polarized light pulse exhibits the onset of the electron streaming inst…
The dielectric permeability tensor for spin polarized plasmas is derived in terms of the spin-1/2 quantum kinetic model in six-dimensional phase space. Expressions for the distribution function and spin distribution function are derived in linear approximations on the path of dielectric permeability tensor derivation. The dielectric permeability tensor is derived the spin-polarized degenerate electron gas. It is also discussed at the finite temperature regime, where the equilibrium distribution function is presented by the spin-polarized Fermi-Dirac distribution. Consideration of the spin-pola…
The nonlinear frequency shift is derived in a transparent asymptotic form for intense Langmuir waves in general collisionless plasma. The formula describes both fluid and kinetic effects simultaneously. The fluid nonlinearity is expressed, for the first time, through the plasma dielectric function, and the kinetic nonlinearity accounts for both smooth distributions and trapped-particle beams. Various known limiting scalings are reproduced as special cases. The calculation avoids differential equations and can be extended straightforwardly to other nonlinear plasma waves.
In plasmas with electron drift (current) relative to static ions, the ion acoustic wave is subject to the kinetic instability which takes place if the directed electron speed exceeds the ion acoustic speed. The instability threshold becomes different in the case of one quasi-neutral electron-ion plasma propagating through another static quasi-neutral (target) plasma. The threshold velocity of the propagating plasma may be well below the ion acoustic speed of the static plasma. Such a current-less instability may frequently be expected in space and astrophysical plasmas.
The formation and evolution of nonlinear and turbulent dynamical structures in two-dimensional complex plasmas and fluids is explored by means of generalised (drift) fluid simulations. Recent numerical results on turbulence in dusty magnetised plasmas, strongly coupled fluids, semi-classical ("quantum") plasmas and in rotating quantum fluids are reviewed and discussed.
A method, called beatification, is presented for rapidly extracting weakly nonlinear Hamiltonian systems that describe the dynamics near equilibria for systems possessing Hamiltonian form in terms of noncanonical Poisson brackets. The procedure applies to systems like fluids and plasmas in terms of Eulerian variables that have such noncanonical Poisson brackets, i.e., brackets with nonstandard and possibly degenerate form. A collection of examples of both finite and infinite dimensions is presented.
The non-modal kinetic theory of the kinetic drift instability of plasma shear flows [Phys.Plasmas, 18, 062103 (2011)] is extended to the investigation of the long-time evolution of the hydrodynamic ion temperature gradient and resistive drift instabilities in plasma shear flow. We find, that these hydrodynamic instabilities passed in their temporal evolution in shear flow through the kinetic stage of the evolution. In linear theory, this evolution involves the time dependent, due to flow shear, effects of the finite Larmor radius, which resulted in the non-modal effect of the decrease with tim…
The low-frequency limit of Maxwell equations is considered in the Maxwell-Vlasov system. This limit produces a neutral Vlasov system that captures essential features of plasma dynamics, while neglecting radiation effects. Euler-Poincaré reduction theory is used to show that the neutral Vlasov kinetic theory possesses a variational formulation in both Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinates. By construction, the model recovers all collisionless neutral models employed in plasma simulations. Then, comparisons between the neutral Vlasov system and hybrid kinetic-fluid models are presented in the line…
The 3-D exact analytical solutions of ideal two fluid plasma, single fluid plasma (MHD) and neutral fluid equations have been found using physically justifiable assumptions. Surprisingly these solutions satisfy all non-linearities in the systems. It is pointed out that these solutions explain the fundamental mechanism behind the creation of vast variety of ordered structures in plasmas and fluids. In the limiting case of two dimensional (2-D) dependence of fields, the theoretical model for plasma is applied to explain the formation of spicules in solar chromosphere. It is pointed out that the …
Large amplitude kinetic Alfvénon (exact Alfvén soliton) matching condition is investigated in quasineutral electron-ion and electron-positron-ion plasmas immersed in a uniform magnetic field. Using the standard pseudopotential method, the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are exactly solved and a global allowed matching condition for propagation of kinetic solitary waves is derived. It is remarked that, depending on the plasma parameters, the kinetic solitons can be sub- or super-Alfvénic, in general. It is further revealed that, either upper or lower soliton speed-limit is independent of f…
A kinetic theory for electromagnetic ion waves in a cold relativistic plasma is derived. The kinetic equation for the broadband electromagnetic ion waves is coupled to the slow density response via an acoustic equation driven by ponderomotive force like term linear in the electromagnetic field amplitude. The modulational instability growth rate is derived for an arbitrary spectrum of waves. The monochromatic and random phase cases are studied.
In a recent paper (Krishan 2021), a two-fluid description of a partially ionized plasma was presented in which electron fluid and the neutral fluid were combined appropriately into one fluid, christened as ENe fluid, and treat the ions as the second fluid. Some of the electrostatic modes of this two-fluid system were studied. Here, I discuss another possibility in which the ion fluid and the neutral fluid are combined into one fluid, christened as INe fluid, and treat the electrons as the second fluid. There can be a huge variation between the relative masses of the neutrals and the ions. Thus…
Transfer of free energy from large to small velocity-space scales by phase mixing leads to Landau damping in a linear plasma. In a turbulent drift-kinetic plasma, this transfer is statistically nearly canceled by an inverse transfer from small to large velocity-space scales due to "anti-phase-mixing" modes excited by a stochastic form of plasma echo. Fluid moments (density, velocity, temperature) are thus approximately energetically isolated from the higher moments of the distribution function, so phase mixing is ineffective as a dissipation mechanism when the plasma collisionality is small.
We describe the implementation of 1d1v and 1d2v Vlasov and Fokker-Planck kinetic solvers with adaptive mesh refinement in phase space (AMPS) and coupling these kinetic solvers to Poisson equation solver for electric field. We demonstrate that coupling AMPS kinetic and electrostatic solvers can be done efficiently without splitting phase-space transport. We show that Eulerian fluid and kinetic solvers with dynamically adaptive Cartesian mesh can be used for simulations of collisionless plasma expansion into vacuum. The Vlasov-Fokker-Planck solver is demonstrated for the analysis of electron acc…
A large number of model particles is shown necessary for quantitatively correct simulations of the kinetic beam-plasma instability with the clouds-in-cells method. The required number of particles scales inversely with the expected growth rate, as in the kinetic regime only a narrow interval of beam velocities is resonant with the wave.
New unstable temperature gradient driven modes in an inhomogeneous plasma are identified. These modes represent transient $ω\simeq k_{\Vert }v_{th}^{(e,i)}$ sound oscillations in magnetized plasma that are kinetically destabilized via Landau interactions. Electron and ion sound branches are unstable for large values of the Larmor radius parameter $% k_{\bot}ρ_{e,i}\gg 1,$ respectively. The instability occurs due to a specific plasma response that significantly deviates from Boltzmann distribution in the region $k_{\bot}ρ_{i,e}\gg 1$ . Pacs: 52.35 Kt, 52.35 Qz
It is shown that absorption of ions by the dust grain may reduce the effective translational temperature of the dust component below the ambient gas temperature.
By taking into account the radiation reaction force, we derive a set of one-fluid relativistic magnetohydrody-namics (RMHD) equations with the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction force based on a relativistic two-fluid plasma. These equations could be used to situations where spatiotemporal scales of plasma's motion are suffi-ciently large.
Under certain conditions an intense kinetic plasma jet is observed to emerge from the apex of laboratory simulations of coronal plasma loops. Analytic and numerical models show that these jets result from a particle orbit instability in a helical magnetic field whereby magnetic forces radially eject rather than confine ions with sufficiently large counter-current axial velocity.
New type of quantum kinetic equations of the Fermi particles are derived. The Bogolyubov's type of dispersion relation, which is valid for the Bose fluid, is disclosed. Model of neutral Bose atoms in dense strongly coupled plasmas with attractive interaction is discussed. A set of fluid equations describing the quantum plasmas is obtained. Furthermore, the equation of state of a degenerate Fermi plasma is derived.
Incorporating the radiation reaction force into two-fluid plasma in curved space, we get a set of one-fluid general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) equations with the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction force. We analyze the importance of the radiation reaction acting on plasma around an astrophysical compact object.
Very simple explicit analytical expressions are discussed, which are able to describe the dispersion relations of longitudinal waves in strongly coupled plasma systems such as one-component plasma and weakly screened Yukawa fluids with a very good accuracy. Applications to other systems with soft pairwise interactions are briefly discussed.
The linear non-modal kinetic theory of the kinetic drift-Alfven instability of plasma shear flows reveals the temporal non-modal growth with growing with time growth rate. The turbulent scattering of the sheared modes on ions accelerates this growth. The instability ceases its growth when the coupling of the drift and Alfven waves violates due to the changing with time frequencies of the drift and Alfven waves in shear flow.
The asymmetrically mounted flat plasma actuator is studied using a self-consistent 2-DIM fluid model at atmospheric pressure. The computational model use the drift-diffusion approximation and a simple plasma phenomenological kinetic model. It is investigated its electrical and kinetic properties, and calculated the charged species concentrations, surface charge density, electrohydrodynamic forces and gas speed. The present computational model contributes to understand the main physical mechanisms and methods to improve its performance.
A kinetic model of gravimagnetic shock waves (GMSW) in a locally anisotropic plasma is investigated. The equations of a drift approximation are written, and the moments of the distribution function are calculated. Solutions of the drift equations for a highly anisotropic ultrarelativistic plasma are found. It is shown that in this case the GMSW essentially affect the angular characteristics and the intensity of the magneto - bremsstrahlung of the magnetoactive plasma.
In the present paper we introduce a full and closed system of atomic kinetic equations on fractions of atomic energy levels taking into account the effect of the plasma ions electric microfield mixing dynamics. The system of equations that we present is deduced from a full quantum multi-atomic states density matrix master equation. The analytical derivation of this atomic kinetic system of equations is based on the introduction of a new hierarchy chain of equations involving a new set of statistical atomic variables. The final system of atomic kinetic equations is obtained by introducing relat…
A connection between kinetic processes and intermittent turbulence is observed in the solar wind plasma using measurements from the Wind spacecraft at 1 AU. In particular, kinetic effects such as temperature anisotropy and plasma heating are concentrated near coherent structures, such as current sheets, which are non-uniformly distributed in space. Furthermore, these coherent structures are preferentially found in plasma unstable to the mirror and firehose instabilities. The inhomogeneous heating in these regions, which is present in both the magnetic field parallel and perpendicular temperatu…
We create streaming ultracold neutral plasmas by tailoring the photoionizing laser beam that creates the plasma. By varying the electron temperature, we control the relative velocity of the streaming populations, and, in conjunction with variation of the plasma density, this controls the ion collisionality of the colliding streams. Laser-induced fluorescence is used to map the spatially resolved density and velocity distribution function for the ions. We identify the lack of local thermal equilibrium and distinct populations of interpenetrating, counter-streaming ions as signatures of kinetic …
Particle-in-Cell (PIC) methods are widely used computational tools for fluid and kinetic plasma modeling. While both the fluid and kinetic PIC approaches have been successfully used to target either kinetic or fluid simulations, little was done to combine fluid and kinetic particles under the same PIC framework. This work addresses this issue by proposing a new PIC method, PolyPIC, that uses polymorphic computational particles. In this numerical scheme, particles can be either kinetic or fluid, and fluid particles can become kinetic when necessary, e.g. particles undergoing a strong accelerati…
Starting from first principles quantum kinetic theory for ideal plasmas with exchange effects, the quantum hydrodynamic equations are derived taking moments of the corresponding exchange-Vlasov equation. The case of an electron-ion plasma where ions are entirely classical is considered. The linear dispersion relation for ion-acoustic waves is found from the macroscopic equations and compared with exchange quantum kinetic theory, yielding a qualitative agreement apart from a numerical factor of order one in the exchange contribution, assuming a Maxwellian background as a first step, for analyti…
A kinetic approach for the evolution of ultracold neutral plasmas including interionic correlations and the treatment of ionization/excitation and recombination/deexcitation by rate equations is described in detail. To assess the reliability of the approximations inherent in the kinetic model, we have developed a hybrid molecular dynamics method. Comparison of the results reveals that the kinetic model describes the atomic and ionic observables of the ultracold plasma surprisingly well, confirming our earlier findings concerning the role of ion-ion correlations [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 010703].…
A nonlinear kinetic equation for nonrelativistic quantum plasma with electromagnetic interaction of particles is obtained in the Hartree's mean-field approximation. It is cast in a convenient form of Vlasov-Boltzmann-type equation with "quantum interference integral", that allows for relatively straightforward modification of existing classical Vlasov codes to incorporate quantum effects (quantum statistics and quantum interference of overlapping particles wave functions), without changing the bulk of the codes. Such modification (upgrade) of existing Vlasov codes may provide a direct and effe…
A non-relativistic multi-fluid plasma axisymmetric equilibrium model was developed recently to account for the presence of an energetic electron fluid in addition to thermal electron and ion fluids. The equilibrium formulation of a multi-fluid plasma with relativistic energetic electrons is developed and reported in this paper. Relativistic effects in a fluid model approximation can appear in two ways: due to a large macroscopic fluid velocity comparable to the speed of light and large particle's microscopic random motion which becomes significant if the temperature becomes comparable to or la…
Validation and verification of plasma kinetics codes requires the development of quantitative methods and techniques for code comparisons. We describe two parameters that can be used for characterization of differences between such codes. It is shown that these parameters, which are determined from the most general results of kinetic codes, can provide important information on the differences between the basic rate coefficients employed. Application of this method is illustrated by comparisons of some results from the 3rd NLTE Code Comparison Workshop for carbon, germanium, and gold plasmas.
A new closure of the BBGKY hierarchy is developed, which results in a convergent kinetic equation that provides a rigorous extension of plasma kinetic theory into the regime of strong Coulomb coupling. The approach is based on a single expansion parameter which enforces that the exact equilibrium limit is maintained at all orders. Because the expansion parameter does not explicitly depend on the range or the strength of the interaction potential, the resulting kinetic theory does not suffer from the typical divergences at short and long length scales encountered when applying the standard kine…
We investigate the formation of collisionless magnetized shocks triggered by the interaction between magnetized plasma flows and miniature-sized (order of plasma kinetic-scales) magnetic obstacles resorting to massively parallel, full particle-in-cell simulations, including the electron kinetics. The critical obstacle size to generate a compressed plasma region ahead of these objects is determined by independently varying the magnitude of the dipolar magnetic moment and the plasma magnetization. We find that the effective size of the obstacle depends on the relative orientation between the dip…
A rigorous and most general covariant kinetic formalism is developed to study the nonlinear waves interaction in relativistic Vlasov plasmas. The typical nonlinear plasma reaction is a nonlinear current measured by the nonlinear plasma conductivity, and these quantities are derived here on the basis of relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell equations. Knowing the nonlinear plasma conductivity allows us to determine all plasma modes nonlinearly excited in plasma. The general covariant form of nonlinear conductivity is provided first for any value of plasma temperature and for the whole complex frequency p…
Plasmas in which there is a threshold for a dominant reaction to take place (such as recombination or attachment) will have particle distributions that evolve as the reaction progresses. The form of the Boltzmann collision term in such a context will cause the distribution to drift from its initial form, and so cause for example temperature fluctuations in the plasma if the distribution is originally Maxwellian. This behaviour will impact on the relevant reaction rates in a feedback loop that is missing from simple chemical kinetic descriptions since the plasma cannot be considered to be isoth…
Efficiency of collective beam-plasma interaction strongly depends on the growth rates of dominant instabilities excited in the system. Nevertheless, exact calculations of the full unstable spectrum in the framework of relativistic kinetic theory for arbitrary magnetic fields and particle distributions were unknown until now. In this paper we give an example of such a calculation answering the question whether the finite thermal spreads of plasma electrons are able to suppress the fastest growing modes in the beam-plasma system. It is shown that nonrelativistic temperatures of Maxwellian plasma…
It is economical to devise ways and means to simplify a multi-species particle system. The single fluid MHD description of a plasma is sufficiently adequate to study plasma phenomena . A plasma containing multi-species of particles can also be described by representing each particle species by the corresponding fluid. A partially ionized plasma consisting of electrons, ions and the neutral particles can be described as a single fluid by appropriately combining the dynamics of each of the species. The three component plasma can also be reduced to a two-fluid system. The most obvious way is to c…
The states of asymptotic relaxation of 2-dimensional fluids and plasma present a high degree of regularity and obey to the sinh-Poisson equation. We find that embedding the classical fluid description into a field-theoretical framework, the same equation appears as a manifestation of the self-duality.
A brief review of the existing kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) hybrid models for the alpha particle physics in burning plasma demonstrates that the pressure-coupling scheme is equivalent to the current-coupling scheme only in a specific dynamic regime where the alpha particle density is much lower than the background ion and electron. A more comprehensive kinetic-multifluid model is proposed for a proper account of the dynamical regime of the burning plasma where both the energetic alpha and the helium ash particles are present. The Kinetic-multifluid model is further simplified into an exten…
This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental study of plasma-assisted reforming of ethanol into molecular hydrogen in a new modification of the "tornado" type electrical discharge. Numerical modeling clarifies the nature of the non-thermal conversion and explains the kinetic mechanism of nonequilibrium plasma-chemical transformations in the gas-liquid system and the evolution of hydrogen during the reforming as a function of discharge parameters and ethanol-to-water ratio in the mixture. We also propose a scheme of chemical reactions for plasma kinetics description. It is …
Active Plasma Resonance Spectroscopy (APRS) is a well-established plasma diagnostic method: a radio frequency signal is coupled into the plasma via a probe or antenna, excites it to oscillate, and the response is evaluated through a mathematical model. The majority of APRS probes are invasive and perturb the plasma by their physical presence. The planar Multipole Resonance Probe (pMRP) solves this problem: it can be integrated into the chamber wall and minimizes the perturbation. Previous work has studied the pMRP in the frame of the Drude model, but it misses important effects like collision-…
For a magnetised plasma in a straight magnetic guide field, we derive a set of four-dimensional kinetic equations, which can capture electromagnetic turbulence in the drift kinetic limit. To do so, we start from the gyrokinetic equations, employ a Laguerre decomposition in the perpendicular velocity direction, retain only the dominant gyroaverage contributions and only the first two Laguerre moments that source the electromagnetic fluctuations. The model conserves free energy, and can describe electromagnetic turbulence for a plasma at the transition between fluid and gyrokinetic regimes ($k_\…
