We have examined the cyclotron resonance instability developing in the relativistic out-flowing plasma in the pulsar magnetosphere. The instability condition leads to radio emission in the sub-GHz frequency regime which is likely to be seen as off-pulse emission. Recent studies have shown the presence of off-pulse emission in long period pulsars, and we demonstrate this plasma process to be an energetically viable mechanism.
We investigate the conditions for radio emission in rotating and oscillating magnetars, by focusing on the main physical processes determining the position of their death-lines in the P-\dot{P} diagram, i.e. of those lines that separate the regions where the neutron star may be radio-loud or radio-quiet. After using the general relativistic expression for the electromagnetic scalar potential in the magnetar magnetosphere, we find that larger compactness parameters of the star as well as larger inclination angles between the rotation axis and the magnetic moment produce death-lines well above t…
Globular clusters are source of gamma-ray radiation. At GeV energies, their emission is attributed to magnetospheric activity of millisecond pulsars residing in the clusters. Inverse Compton scattering of ambient photon fields on relativistic particles diffusing through cluster environment is thought to be the source of GeV-TeV emission of globular clusters. Using pair starved polar cap model gamma-ray emission from synthetic millisecond pulsar was modelled. In addition to pulsar emission characteristics, the synthetic pulsar model yielded spectra of electrons escaping pulsar magnetosphere. To…
We try to explain the subpulse drift phenomena adopting the space-charge limited flow (SCLF) model and comparing the plasma drift velocity in the inner region of pulsar magnetospheres with the observed velocity of drifting subpulses. We apply the approach described in a recent paper of van Leeuwen & Timokhin (2012), where it was shown that the standard estimation of the subpulse drift velocity through the total value of the scalar potential drop in the inner gap gives inaccurate results, while the exact expression relating the drift velocity to the gradient of the scalar potential should be us…
The dipolar magnetic field structure of the neutron star is modified by the plasma originating in the pulsar magnetopshere. In the simplest case of a stationary axisymmetric force-free magnetosphere, a self-consistent description of the fields and currents is given by the well-known pulsar equation. Here we revise the commonly used boundary conditions of the problem in order to incorporate the plasma-producing gaps and to provide a framework for a truly self-consistent treatment of the pulsar magnetosphere. The generalized multipolar solution of the pulsar equation is found, which, as compared…
It is proposed that there exists a class of pulsars, called weak pulsars, for which the large-scale magnetosphere, and hence the gamma-ray emission, are independent of the detailed pattern of plasma production. The weak pulsar magnetosphere and its gamma-ray emission are uniquely determined by just three parameters: spin, dipole, and the spin-dipole angle. We calculate this supposedly unique pulsar magnetosphere in the axisymmetric case. The magnetosphere is found to be very close to (although interestingly not fully identical with) the magnetosphere we have previously calculated, explaining t…
Rich observational phenomenology associated with Pulsar B in PSR J0737$-$3039A/B system resembles in many respects phenomena observed in the Earth and Jupiter magnetospheres, originating due to the wind-magnetosphere interaction. We consider particle dynamics in the fast corotating magnetosphere of Pulsar B, when the spin period is shorter than the third adiabatic period. We demonstrate that trapped particles occasionally experience large radial variations of the L-parameter (effective radial distance) due to the parametric interaction of the gyration motion with the large scale electric field…
We perform global particle-in-cell simulations of pulsar magnetospheres including pair production, ion extraction from the surface, frame dragging corrections, and high energy photon emission and propagation. In the case of oblique rotators, effects of general relativity increase the fraction of open field lines which support active pair discharge. We find that the plasma density and particle energy flux in the pulsar wind are highly non-uniform with latitude. Significant fraction of the outgoing particle energy flux is carried by energetic ions, which are extracted from the stellar surface. T…

Plasma-filled pulsar magnetospheres contain thin current sheets wherein the charged particles are accelerated by magnetic reconnections to travel at ultra-relativistic speeds. On the other hand, the plasma frequency of the more regular force-free regions of the magnetosphere rests almost precisely on the upper limit of radio frequencies, with the cyclotron frequency being far higher due to the strong magnetic field. This combination produces a peculiar situation, whereby radio-frequency waves can travel at subluminal speeds without becoming evanescent. The conditions are thus conducive to Cere…
Magnetic B-stars often exhibit circularly polarized radio emission thought to arise from gyrosynchrotron emission by energetic electrons trapped in the circumstellar magnetosphere. Recent empirical analyses show that the onset and strength of the observed radio emission scale with both the magnetic field strength and the stellar rotation rate. This challenges the existing paradigm that the energetic electrons are accelerated in the current sheet between opposite-polarity field lines in the outer regions of magnetised stellar winds, which includes no role for stellar rotation. Building on recen…
Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations at 86 GHz reveal an almost hollow jet in M87 with a forked morphology. The detailed analysis presented here indicates that the spectral luminosity of the central spine of the jet in M87 is a few percent of that of the surrounding hollow jet $200 -400 μ\rm{as}$ from the central black hole. Furthermore, recent jet models in indicate that a hollow "tubular" jet can explain a wide range of plausible broadband spectra originating from jetted plasma located within $\sim 30μ\rm{as}$ of the central black hole, including the 230 GHz correlated flux detecte…
Fluctuations during a prolonged maximum have been observed in several nova eruptions, although it is not clear, and can not be deduced directly from observations, if the phenomenon is an actual physical reaction to some mechanism originating in the erupting white dwarf, if it is occurring in the expanding ejected shell or if it is a form of interaction with the red dwarf companion. A handful of erupting nova models are investigated in this work, in order to assess the possibility of this sort of feature being an actual part of the eruption itself. The results explain that the mechanism that ma…
In the present work we consider energy accumulation mechanism in relativistic electron-positron plasma in the magnetosphere of pulsars. Waves propagating almost across the magnetic field lines are generated that accumulate the energy of plasma particles, as the waves stay significantly long in the resonance region. The accumulated energy is transmitted in the parallel direction of the magnetic field lines as soon as the non-linear plasma processes start to operate. It is suggested that exit of the accumulated energy via waves propagating along the magnetic field lines matching the viewing angl…
The gamma-ray population of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has been steadily increasing. A number of the more recent detections, including PSR J0034-0534, PSR J1939+2134 (B1937+21; the first MSP ever discovered), PSR J1959+2048 (B1957+20; the first black widow system), and PSR J2214+3000 exhibit an unusual phenomenon: nearly phase-aligned radio and gamma-ray light curves (LCs). To account for the phase alignment, we explore geometric models where both the radio and gamma-ray emission originate either in the outer magnetosphere near the light cylinde…
1FGL J1018.6-5856 is a high mass gamma-ray binary containing a compact object orbiting around a massive star with a period of 16.544 d. If the compact object is a pulsar, non-thermal emissions are likely produced by electrons accelerated at the termination shock, and may also originate from the magnetosphere and the un-shocked wind of the pulsar. In this paper, we investigate the non-thermal emissions from the wind and the shock with different viewing geometries and study the multi-wavelength emissions from 1FGL J1018.6-5856. We present the analysis results of the \textit{Fermi}/LAT using near…
Sub-pulse drifting has been regarded as one of the most insightful aspects of the pulsar radio emission. The phenomenon is generally explained with a system of emission sub-beams rotating around the magnetic axis, originating from a carousel of sparks near the pulsar surface (the carousel model). Since the observed radio emission at different frequencies is generated at different altitudes in the pulsar magnetosphere, corresponding sampling of the carousel on the polar cap differs slightly in magnetic latitude. When this aspect is considered, it is shown here that the carousel model predicts i…
Millisecond spinning, low magnetic field neutron stars are believed to attain their fast rotation in a 0.1-1 Gyr-long phase during which they accrete matter endowed with angular momentum from a low-mass companion star. Despite extensive searches, coherent periodicities originating from accreting neutron star magnetospheres have been detected only at X-ray energies and in ~10% of the presently known systems. Here we report the detection of optical and ultraviolet coherent pulsations at the X-ray period of the transient low mass X-ray binary system SAX J1808.4-3658, during an accretion outburst …

Within the magnetar scenario, the "twisted magnetosphere" model appears very promising in explaining the persistent X-ray emission from the Soft Gamma Repeaters and the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (SGRs and AXPs). In the first two papers of the series, we have presented a 3D Monte Carlo code for solving radiation transport as soft, thermal photons emitted by the star surface are resonantly upscattered by the magnetospheric particles. A spectral model archive has been generated and implemented in XSPEC. Here we report on the systematic application of our spectral model to different XMM-Newton and I…
Most current pulsar emission models assume photon production and emission within the magnetosphere. Low frequency radiation is preferentially produced in the vicinity of the polar caps whereas the high-energy tail is shifted to regions closer but still inside the light-cylinder. We conducted a systematic study of the merit of several popular radiation sites like the polar cap, the outer gap and the slot gap. We computed sky maps emanating from each emission site according to a prescribed distribution function for the emitting particles made of an electron/positron mixture. Calculations are per…
We report on Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) hard X-ray observations of the young rotation-powered radio pulsar PSR B1509$-$58 in the supernova remnant MSH 15$-$52. We confirm the previously reported curvature in the hard X-ray spectrum, showing that a log parabolic model provides a statistically superior fit to the spectrum compared with the standard power law. The log parabolic model describes the NuSTAR data, as well as previously published gamma-ray data obtained with COMPTEL and AGILE, all together spanning 3 keV through 500 MeV. Our spectral modelling allows us to constrai…
Pulsars are neutron stars, stellar corpses left over after supernova explosions of stars about ten times as massive as our Sun, with densities comparable to the atomic nucleus', spinning with periods from few milliseconds up to few seconds, and endowed with magnetic fields thousands billion times stronger than the Earth's, where particles are accelerated to the relativistic regime producing electromagnetic radiation across the entire spectrum. Although there is a general consensus on the fact that pulsars' radio emission is coherent in nature, whereas the emission from the optical to high-ener…
Magnetic pair creation $γ\to e^+e^-$ has been at the core of radio pulsar paradigms and central to polar cap models of gamma-ray pulsars for over three decades. The Fermi gamma-ray pulsar population now exceeds 140 sources and has defined an important part of Fermi's science legacy. Among the population characteristics well established is the common occurrence of exponential turnovers in their spectra in the 1--10 GeV range. These turnovers are too gradual to arise from magnetic pair creation in the strong magnetic fields of pulsar inner magnetospheres. By demanding insignificant photon attenu…
In more than four years of observation the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi satellite has identified pulsed $γ$-ray emission from more than 80 young pulsars, providing light curves with high statistics. Fitting the observations with geometrical models can provide estimates of the magnetic obliquity $α$ and aspect angle $ζ$, yielding estimates of the radiation beaming factor and luminosity. Using $γ$-ray emission geometries (Polar Cap, Slot Gap, Outer Gap, One Pole Caustic) and radio emission geometry, we fit $γ$-ray light curves for 76 young pulsars and we jointly fit their $γ$-ray plus…
