The precise determination of the cross section for electron-positron annihilation into hadrons is one of the central tasks of ongoing experiments at low energy colliders. These measurements have to be complemented by Monte Carlo generators which simulate a large number of final states and include higher order radiative corrections. With this motivation in mind the generator PHOKHARA is extended to allow for the simulation of final states with zero, one or two real photons. At the same time corrections from the emission of one or two virtual photons are included, such that a full next-to-next-to leading order generator is available. The stability and consistency of the program is tested. The results (for muon-pair final states) are compared to the programs KKMC and MCGPJ and implications for the analysis of various hadronic final states are investigated.
A review of the status of the Monte Carlo event generator PHOKHARA, developed for experiments using the radiative return method. The four-pion production in electron-positron annihilation and in tau-lepton decays and the narrow resonances studies are described.
Electron--positron annihilation into hadrons plus an energetic photon from initial state radiation allows the hadronic cross-section to be measured over a wide range of energies at high luminosity meson factories. A Monte Carlo generator called PHOKHARA has been constructed, which simulates this process at the next-to-leading order accuracy.
Experiments at high luminosity electron-positron colliders allow to study the kaon and the pion form factors in the time-like region up to high energies. Also the kaon and the pion pair production at and around the narrow resonances J/psi and psi(2S) can be investigated, with the interference between electromagnetic and hadronic amplitudes as one of the most interesting phenomenas. Parameterisations of charged and neutral kaon as well as pion form factors, which lead to an improved description of the data in the region of large invariant masses of the meson pair, are presented. They are implem…
The Monte Carlo event generator PHOKHARA, which simulates hadron and muon production at electron-positron colliders through radiative return, has been extended to final states with three pions. A model for the form factor based on generalized vector dominance has been employed, which is consistent with presently available experimental observations.
Predictions for the radiative return with the muon pair and pion pair final state from KKMC and PHOKHARA Monte Carlo programs are compared and discussed. The case of muon pairs is well understood, especially of the initial state radiation (ISR), where three different second order calculations agree very well. The case of the final state radiation (FSR) requires more tests. Matrix element in KKMC of the EEX type with the incomplete second order NLL corrections is not good enough for the radiative return at $Q^2<1$GeV with the precision requirement better than 1%. A method of extending the super…
We study, at leading order in the large number of colours expansion and within the Resonance Chiral Theory framework, the odd-intrinsic-parity $e^+ e^- \rightarrow π^+ π^- (π^0, η)$ cross-sections in the energy regime populated by hadron resonances, namely $3 \, m_π \lsim E \lsim 2 \, \mbox{GeV}$. In addition we implement our results in the Monte Carlo generator PHOKHARA 7.0 and we simulate hadron production through the radiative return method.
In the current work, We investigated the production of neutral Higgs boson and two charged Charginos owing to electron-positron annihilation via different propagators
In this paper initial state radiation corrections to double production of charmonium mesons on one-photon electron-positron annihilation at center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=10.6\GeV$ are studied. It is shown, that these corrections have noticeable effect and must be taken into consideration.
This article gives the perturbative NNLO results for the moments of the most commonly used event shape variables associated to three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation: Thrust, heavy jet mass, wide jet broadening, total jet broadening, C parameter and the Durham three-to-two jet transition variable.
We report on a recent work proposing measurements of the deeply virtual Compton amplitude (DVCS) $γ^* \to h \bar h γ$ in the timelike kinematic domain which is accessible at electron-positron colliders via the radiative annihilation process $e^+ e^- \to h \bar h γ$.
The possibility is examined for the inclusive $Λ$ in unpolarized electron-positron annihilation to be transversely polarized. Due to final-state interactions, there exists a novel structure function $\hat F(z,Q^2)$ for the inclusive $Λ$ hyperon (or any other baryons) production from the unpolarized time-like photon fragmentation, which makes contribution to the transverse $Λ$ polarization in the unpolarized electron-positron annihilation.
We present the complete result for the ${\cal O}(α^7m_e)$ one-photon annihilation contribution to the hyperfine splitting of the ground state energy levels in positronium. Numerically it increases the prediction of quantum electrodynamics by $217\pm 1$ kHz.
The strong coupling constant is a fundamental parameter of nature. It can be extracted from experiments measuring three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation. For this extraction precise theoretical calculations for jet rates and event shapes are needed. In this talk I will discuss the NNLO calculation for these observables.
A detailed presentation is given of the analytic calculation of the single-photon annihilation contributions to the positronium ground state hyperfine splitting to order $m_eα^6$ in the framework of non-relativistic effective theories. The current status of the theoretical description of the positronium ground state hyperfine splitting is reviewed.
Expressions for Sudakov form factors for heavy quarks are presented. They are used to construct resummed jet rates in electron-positron annihilation. Predictions are given for production of bottom quarks at LEP and top quarks at the Linear Collider.
We have calculated all contributions to the energy levels of parapositronium at order $m α^7$ coming from vacuum polarization corrections to processes involving virtual annihilation to two photons. This work is motivated by ongoing efforts to improve the experimental determination of the positronium ground-state hyperfine splitting.
I report on a numerical program, which can be used to calculate any infrared safe three-jet observable in electron-positron annihilation to next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The results are compared to a recent calculation by another group. Numerical differences in three colour factors are discussed and explained.
I report on a numerical program, which can be used to calculate any infra-red safe two-jet observable in electron-positron annihilation to next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The calculation is based on the subtraction method. The result for the two-jet cross section is compared to the literature.
Radiative corrections due to pair production in process of electron-positron annihilation are considered. The main attention is paid to the corrections of the third order. Simultaneous emission of photons and pairs is taken into account. The leading log approximation and convolution procedure are used. Exponentiation is discussed. Theoretical uncertainty in description of higher order secondary pairs is estimated.
This article gives the perturbative NNLO results for the most commonly used event shape variables associated to three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation: Thrust, heavy jet mass, wide jet broadening, total jet broadening, C parameter and the Durham three-to-two jet transition variable. In addition the NNLO results for the jet rates corresponding to the Durham, Geneva, Jade-E0 and Cambridge jet algorithms are presented.
Process of muon (pion) pair production with small invariant mass in the electron-positron high-energy annihilation, accompanied by emission of hard photon at large angles, is considered. We find that the Dell-Yan picture for differential cross section is valid in the charge-even experimental set-up. Radiative corrections both for electron block and for final state block are taken into account.
Events with tagged photons in the process of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons are considered. The initial state radiation is suggested to scan the hadronic cross section with the energy. QED radiative corrections are taken into account. The results for the total and exclusive cross sections are given in an analytic form. Some numerical estimates are presented.
We present the contributions from all types of one-loop corrections to the scattering amplitude for the pair production of polarized charginos or neutralinos from polarized electron-positron annihilation. The contributions are classified in terms of ``prototypes'' distinguished by the number of particles inside the loops and their spins. The results are quoted in terms of the Veltman-Passarino functions in terms of general couplings and internal masses. The results can therefore be applied to any supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model or indeed to any polarized fermion pair production …
We study the decays into six quarks of off-shell pairs of W bosons produced in electron-positron annihilations, through the O(as^2) order in the strong coupling constant. We give explicit helicity amplitude formulae. We present numerical results in the context of phenomenological analyses of relevance at LEP2 and future Linear Colliders: such as MW determinations, New Physics and Higgs searches.
Positronium spectroscopy (n=1 hyperfine splitting, n=2 fine structure, and the 1S-2S interval) has reached a precision of order 1 MHz. Vigorous ongoing efforts to improve the experimental results motivate the calculation of the positronium energy levels at order $m α^7$. In this work we present the result for a complete class of such contributions--those involving virtual annihilation of positronium to three photons in an intermediate state. We find an energy shift of $2.6216(11) m α^7/(n π)^3$ for the spin-triplet S state with principal quantum number n.
We study the structures in cross sections and R ratios concerning electron-positron annihilation reactions, for open-strangeness, open-charm and open-beauty hadron-pair production, from the perspective of a recently developed production formalism. Special attention is paid to non-resonant contributions. Known, tentative, and yet unknown resonances are spotted, with estimates for their masses and widths.
The recent data from PAMELA and Fermi-LAT can be interpreted as evidence of new astrophysical sources of high energy positrons. In that case, such astrophysical positrons constitute an additional background against the positrons from dark matter annihilation. In this paper, we study the effect of that background on the prospects for the detection of a positron dark matter signal in future experiments. In particular, we determine the new regions in the (mass, $\sigmav$) plane that are detectable by the AMS-02 experiment for several dark matter scenarios and different propagation models. We find…
Processes of electron-positron annihilation into a pair of fermions were considered. Forward-backward and left-right asymmetries were studied, taking into account polarization of initial and final particles. Complete 1-loop electroweak radiative corrections were included. A wide energy range including the $Z$ boson peak and higher energies relevant for future $e^+e^-$ colliders was covered. Sensitivity of observable asymmetries to the electroweak mixing angle and fermion weak coupling was discussed.
The program EERAD3 computes the parton-level QCD contributions to event shapes and jet rates in electron-positron annihilation through to order $α_s^3$. For three-jet production and related observables, this corresponds to next-to-next-to-leading order corrections, and allows for precision QCD studies. We describe the program and its usage in detail.
We present next-to-leading order corrections in the leading colour approximation for jet rates in electron-positron annihilation up to seven jets. The results for the two-, three-, and four-jet rates agree with known results. The NLO jet rates have been known previously only up to five jets. The results for the six- and seven-jet rate are new. The results are obtained by a new and efficient method based on subtraction and numerical integration.
This article gives results on several jet algorithms in electron-positron annihilation: Considered are the exclusive sequential recombination algorithms Durham, Geneva, Jade-E0 and Cambridge, which are typically used in electron-positron annihilation. In addition also inclusive jet algorithms are studied. Results are provided for the inclusive sequential recombination algorithms Durham, Aachen and anti-kt, as well as the infrared-safe cone algorithm SISCone. The results are obtained in perturbative QCD and are NNNLO for the two-jet rates, NNLO for the three-jet rates, NLO for the four-jet rate…
The non-radiative scattering amplitudes for electron-positron annihilation into quark and lepton pairs in the TeV energy range are calculated in the double-logarithmic approximation. The expressions for the amplitudes are obtained using infrared evolution equations with different cut-offs for virtual photons and for W and Z bosons, and compared with previous results obtained with an universal cut-off.
Ongoing improvements in the measurement of positronium transition intervals motivate the calculation of the $O(m α^7)$ corrections to these intervals. In this work we focus on corrections to the spin-singlet parapositronium energies involving virtual annihilation to two photons in an intermediate state. We have evaluated all contributions to the positronium S-state energy levels that can be written as the product of a one-loop correction on one side of the annihilation event and another one-loop correction on the other side. These effects contribute $ΔE = -0.561971(25) m α^7/π^3$ to the parapo…
Theory results on precision measurements in electron-positron annihilation at low and high energies are collected. These cover pure QCD calculations as well as mixed electroweak and QCD results, involving light and heavy quarks. The impact of QCD corrections on the $W$-boson mass is discussed and, last not least, the status and the perspectives for the Higgs boson decay rate into $b\bar b$, $c\bar c$ and into two gluons.
We discuss techniques for obtaining a numerically-stable evaluation of the fully differential cross section for the virtual photon correction to single hard photon bremsstrahlung in two different computational schemes. We also compare the role of finite mass corrections in these schemes.
In a companion publication, we have explored how to examine the summation of large logarithms in a parton shower. Here, we apply this general program to the thrust distribution in electron-positron annihilation, using several shower algorithms. The method is to work with an appropriate integral transform of the distribution for the observable of interest. Then, we reformulate the parton shower calculation so as to obtain the transformed distribution as an exponential for which we can compute the terms in the perturbative expansion of the exponent.
The calculational precision of $\ee\to\tautau$ and $\ee\to\mumu$ production cross-sections in electron-positron annihilations at \roots = 10.58 \gev are studied for the \kk Monte Carlo simulation program. We determine $σ(\ee\to\tautau) = (0.919 \pm 0.003) \nb$ and $σ(\ee\to\mumu) = (1.147 \pm 0.005) \nb$, where the error represents the precision of the calculation.
The process of the muon (pion) pair production with small invariant mass in the electron--positron high--energy annihilation, accompanied by emission of hard photon at large angles, is considered. We find that the Drell--Yan picture for differential cross section is valid in the charge--even experimental set--up. Radiative corrections both for electron block and for final state block are taken into account.
We have compared the virtual corrections to electron-positron annihilation to fermion pairs with single hard bremsstrahlung as calculated by S. Jadach, M. Melles, B.F.L. Ward and S.A. Yost to several other expressions. The most recent of these comparisons is to the leptonic tensor calculated by J.H. Kuhn and G. Rodrigo for radiative return. Agreement is found to within $10^{-5}$ or better, as a fraction of the Born cross section.
Recent theory results on direct production of resonances with positive charge conjugation in electron-positron annihilation are reviewed. The strong model dependence is emphasized, with predictions varying between 0.03 eV and 0.43 eV for the charmonium state with $J^{PC} = 1^{++}$ and between 0.16 eV and 4.25 eV for the state with $J^{PC} = 2^{++}$. For the state with $J^{PC} = 0^{++}$ the cross section is of $\cal{O}$ $(m^2_e/M^2_χ)$ and thus negligeable for all practical purpose. The importance of the relative phase of the production amplitude is emphasized.
The final-state interaction effects on the inclusive two-particle production in electron-positron annihilation are investigated within the context of the one-photon annihilation approximation. Such effects are characterized by one structure function in the decomposition of the hadronic tensor. On the basis of the positivity, we derived an inequality to bound this structure function. The price to access it experimentally is to polarize longitudinally one of the initial-state beam, to say, the electron beam, and measure the corresponding single spin asymmetry. By combining the Callan-Gross relat…
The charged particles multiplicity distribution in the KNO form is discussed in processes of $e^+e^-$ annihilation at energies $\sqrt{s}$ 14 -- 206.2 GeV. The experimental data are compared to data, obtained with Monte Carlo simulation in PYTHIA in the Lund quark string model. It is shown, that both experimental and simulated data are described by the same distribution function in the KNO form. It is shown, that the KNO scaling is consequence of quark string hadronization dynamics in the Lund string model.
Recent and ongoing experimental work on the positronium spectrum motivates new efforts to calculate positronium energy levels at the level of three loop corrections. We have obtained results for one set of such corrections involving light-by-light scattering of the photons produced in a two-photon virtual annihilation process. Our result is an energy shift $1.58377(8) m α^7/π^3$ for the n=1 singlet state, correcting the ground state hyperfine splitting by -6.95 kHz. We also obtained a new and more precise result for the light-by-light scattering correction to the real decay of parapositronium …
We compute the electroweak ${\cal O}(α^3α_s)$ corrections to three-jet production and related event-shape observables at electron-positron colliders. We properly account for the experimental photon isolation criteria and for the corrections to the total hadronic cross section. Corrections to the three-jet rate and to normalised event-shape distributions turn out to be at the few-per-cent level.
The process of electron-positron annihilation into a pair of $π^0$ and $ω$ mesons is considered in the framework of the SU(2)$\times$SU(2) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Contributions of intermediate photons, $ρ(770)$ and $ρ'(1450)$ vector mesons are taken into account. It is shown that the bulk of the cross section at energies below 2 GeV is provided by the process with intermediate $ρ'(1450)$ state. The contribution due to single photon and $ρ(770)$ exchange is in agreement with the vector meson dominance model. Numerical results are compared with experimental data.
We compute production rates for two, three, four and five jets in electron-positron annihilation at the third order in the QCD coupling constant. At this order, three-jet production is described to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory while the two-jet rate is obtained at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO). Our results yield an improved perturbative description of the dependence of jet multiplicity on the jet resolution parameter, $\ycut$, particularly at small values of $\ycut$.
Electron-positron annihilation into a pair of top quarks is considered at the energy of the future collider CLIC. Polarization components of the top quark are calculated with the $γt \bar{t}$ and $Z t \bar{t}$ interactions which follow from the Lagrangian of the effective field theory of the Standard Model. The polarization vector as a function of the scattering angle is calculated and averaged components of polarization are analyzed as functions of anomalous coupling constants. Extrema of these observables (maxima, minima and saddle points) are studied as functions of the $e^+ e^-$ energy.
We calculate the rate for $e^+e^-$ annihilation into four jets at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD, but omitting terms that are suppressed by one or more powers of $1/\Nc^2$, where $\Nc$ is the number of colors. The $\cO(α_s^3)$ corrections depend strongly on the jet resolution parameter $\ycut$ and on the clustering and recombination schemes, and they substantially improve the agreement between theory and data.
The Collins fragmentation function is extracted from HERMES data on azimuthal single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, and BELLE data on azimuthal asymmetries in electron positron annihilations. A Gaussian model is assumed for the distribution of transverse parton momenta and predictions are used from the chiral quark-soliton model for the transversity distribution function. We find that the HERMES and BELLE data yield a consistent picture of the Collins fragmentation function which is compatible with COMPASS data and the information previously obtained from an an…
Annihilation of the electron-positron pairs in macroscopic polyelectrons is considered. It is shown that very fast collapse of the spatial area occupied by macroscopic polyelectron (or dense electron-positron plasma) produces an instant annihilation of a very large number of electron-positron pairs. This phenomenon corresponds to the so-called annihilation explosion. Annihilation of each electron-positron pair is a highly exothermic process. Therefore, in dense electron-positron plasma one can observe a very interesting phenomenon of photon detonation, i.e. a self-organized formation and propa…
The positron excess observed by the PAMELA experiment may come from dark matter annihilation, if the annihilation cross section is large enough. We show that the dark matter annihilation scenarios to explain the positron excess may also be compatible with the discrepancy of the cosmic lithium abundances between theory and observations. The wino-like neutralino in the supersymmetric standard model is a good example for it. This scenario may be confirmed by Fermi satellite experiment.
The explicit expression for the R-ratio of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons, which properly accounts for all the effects due to continuation of the spacelike perturbative results into the timelike domain, is obtained at an arbitrary loop level. Several equivalent ways to derive a commonly employed approximation of the R-ratio are recapped and the impact of discarded in the latter higher-order pi2-terms on the evaluation of the strong running coupling is elucidated. The obtained results substantially facilitate the theoretical study of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons and …
The AMS-02 collaboration has recently presented measurements of excellent quality of the cosmic electron and positron fluxes as well as the positron fraction. We use the measurements of the positron flux to derive, for the first time, limits on the dark matter annihilation cross section and lifetime for various final states. Working under the well-motivated assumption that a background positron flux exists from spallations of cosmic rays with the interstellar medium and from astrophysical sources, we find strong limits on the dark matter properties which are competitive, although slightly weak…
Indirect detection signals from dark matter annihilation are studied in the positron channel. We discuss in detail the positron propagation inside the galactic medium: we present novel solutions of the diffusion and propagation equations and we focus on the determination of the astrophysical uncertainties which affect the positron dark matter signal. We find dark matter scenarios and propagation models that nicely fit existing data on the positron fraction. Finally, we present predictions both on the positron fraction and on the flux for already running or planned space experiments, concluding…
Supersymmetric neutralinos are one of the most promising candidates for the dark matter in the Universe. If they exist, they should make up some fraction of the Milky Way halo. We investigate the fluxes of positrons expected at the Earth from neutralino annihilation in the halo. Positron propagation is treated in a diffusion model including energy loss. The positron source function includes contributions from both continuum and monochromatic positrons. We find that, for a "canonical" halo model and propagation parameters, the fluxes are generally too low to be visible. Given the large uncertai…
The single photon annihilation contributions for the positronium ground state hyperfine splitting are calculated analytically to order $m_eα^6$ using NRQED. Based on intuitive physical arguments the same result can also be determined by a trivial calculation using results from existing literature. Our result completes the hyperfine splitting calculation to order $m_eα^6$. We compare the theoretical prediction with the most recent experimental measurement.
High energy positron annihilation is a viable mechanism to produce dark photons ($A^\prime$). This reaction plays a significant role in beam-dump experiments using experiments using multi-GeV electron-beams on thick targets by enhancing the sensitivity to $A^\prime$ production. The positrons produced by the electromagnetic shower can produce an $A^\prime$ via non-resonant ($e^+ + e^- \to γ+ A^\prime$) and resonant ($e^+ + e^- \to A^\prime$) annihilation on atomic electrons. For visible decays, the contribution of resonant annihilation results in a larger sensitivity with respect to limits deri…
Electron-positron annihilation largely occurs in local thermal and chemical equilibrium after the neutrinos fall out of thermal equilibrium and during the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) epoch. The effects of this process are evident in BBN yields as well as the relativistic degrees of freedom. We self-consistently calculate the collision integral for electron-positron creation and annihilation using the Klein-Nishina amplitude and appropriate statistical factors for Fermi-blocking and Bose-enhancement. Our calculations suggest that this annihilation freezes out when the photon-electron-positro…
