We observed an extended X-ray source designated as Suzaku J1759-3450 with the Suzaku and Chandra observations towards 1RXS J175911.0-344921, which is an unidentified X-ray source listed in the ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue. A conspicuous emission line at 6 keV was also found in the Suzaku J1759-3450 spectrum. Assuming the emission line to be K emission from He-like Fe ions, we inferred Suzaku J1759-3450 to be an extragalactic object located at z = 0.13. The radial profile of the surface brightness in the 0.5-10 keV band was explained well with an isothermal beta-model of r_c = 1.61' and beta = 0.78. The X-ray spectrum was well reproduced by an optically-thin thermal plasma with the electron temperature of kT_e = 5.3 keV attenuated by the photoelectric absorption of N_H = 2.3 x 10^21 cm^-2. The bolometric X-ray luminosity of L_X (r < r_500) = 4.3 x 10^44 erg s^-1 is consistent with that expected from the L_X-T relation of clusters of galaxies. In terms of the spatial extent, the X-ray spectrum, and the bolometric luminosity of the X-ray emitting gas, we concluded that Suzaku J1759-3450 is a new cluster of galaxies.
With the XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations, for the first time, we acquired broad-band spectra of two unidentified X-ray sources towards the Galactic bulge: 1RXS J180556.1$-$343818 and 1RXS J173905.2$-$392615. The 1RXS J180556.1$-$343818 spectrum in the $0.3$-$7$ keV band was explained by X-ray emission originated from an optically-thin thermal plasma with temperatures of $0.5$ and $1.7$ keV. The estimated absorption column density of $N_{\rm H} \sim 4 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ was significantly smaller than the Galactic HI column density towards the source. A candidate of its optical counter…
X-Ray Observation of the Galactic Supernova Remnant G355.6-0.0 with Suzaku
G1.9+0.3 is the youngest known Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) and dominated by X-ray synchrotron emission. Synchrotron X-rays can be a useful tool to study the electron acceleration in young SNRs. The X-ray spectra of young SNRs give us information about the particle acceleration at the early stages of evolution of SNRs. In this work, we investigate the time evolution of roll-off frequency of the synchrotron spectrum from SNR G1.9+0.3 using Suzaku. For this analysis, we use ~101 ks (2011) and ~92 ks (2015) observations with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer. We find that there are no significan…
We present a uniform broadband X-ray (0.5-100.0 keV) spectral analysis of 12 Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) selected Compton-thick ($\log N_{\mathrm{H}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2} \geq 24$) Active Galactic Nuclei (CTAGNs) observed with Suzaku. The Suzaku data of 3 objects are published here for the first time. We fit the Suzaku and Swift spectra with models utilizing an analytic reflection code and those utilizing the Monte Carlo based model from an AGN torus by Ikeda et al. 2009. The main results are as follows. (1) The estimated intrinsic luminosity of a CTAGN strongly depends on the model; applyin…
Global Distribution of Fe K alpha Lines in the Galactic Center Region Observed with the Suzaku Satellite
The origin of Galactic cosmic rays remains unconfirmed, but promising candidates for their sources are found in star-forming regions. We report a series of X-ray observations, with Suzaku, toward the nearby star-forming region of Cygnus X. They aim at comparing diffuse X-ray emissions on and off the $γ$-ray cocoon of hard cosmic rays revealed by Fermi LAT. After excluding point sources and small-scale structures and subtracting the non-X-ray and cosmic X-ray backgrounds, the 2--10~keV X-ray intensity distribution is found to monotonically decrease with increasing Galactic latitude. This indica…
We systematically analyze the broadband (0.5--200 keV) X-ray spectra of hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) selected local low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) observed with {\it Suzaku} and {\it Swift}/BAT. The sample consists of ten LLAGNs detected with {\it Swift}/BAT with intrinsic 14--195 keV luminosities smaller than $10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ available in the {\it Suzaku} archive, covering a wide range of the Eddington ratio from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-2}$. The overall spectra can be reproduced with an absorbed cut-off power law, often accompanied by reflection components from distant cold matter,…
WR~102-1 was detected by Suzaku as a conspicuous point source in the 6.7 keV intensity map of the central region of the Milky Way. The source was suggested as a possible Wolf-Rayet binary based on its X-ray and infrared spectral characteristics. The iron line emission is expected to originate in the Wolf-Rayet star's dynamic stellar-wind when colliding the companion's mild stellar wind. Here, we report the result of a long-term X-ray monitoring of WR~102-1 since 1998 using archival data of ASCA, XMM-Newton, Chandra, Suzaku, and Swift to reveal variations of the iron K-emission line and the cir…
Revisiting the Suzaku spectrum of the Galactic SNR W 49 B: non-detection of iron K-shell charge exchange emission and refined ejecta mass ratios of iron-group elements
The unidentified VHE (E>100 GeV) gamma-ray source HESS J1507-622 seems to not fit into standard models for sources related to young supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, or young stellar populations in general. This is due to its intrinsically extended, but yet compact morphology, coupled with a relative large offset (~3.5 deg) from the Galactic plane. Therefore, it has been suggested that this object may be the first representative of a new distinct class of extended off-plane gamma-ray sources. The distance to HESS J1507-622 is the key parameter to constrain the source's most important pr…
We report the results obtained by a systematic, broadband (0.5--150 keV) X-ray spectral analysis of moderately obscured (Compton-thin; $22 \leq \log N_{\rm H} < 24$) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with Suzaku and Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). Our sample consists of 45 local AGNs at $z<0.1$ with $\log L_{\rm 14-195\1mmkeV} > 42$ detected in the Swift/BAT 70-month survey, whose Suzaku archival data are available as of 2015 December. All spectra are uniformly fit with a baseline model composed of an absorbed cutoff power-law component, reflected emission accompanied by a narrow fluor…
We present the first dedicated X-ray study of the supernova remnant (SNR) G32.8-0.1 (Kes 78) with Suzaku. X-ray emission from the whole SNR shell has been detected for the first time. The X-ray morphology is well correlated with the emission from the radio shell, while anti-correlated with the molecular cloud found in the SNR field. The X-ray spectrum shows not only conventional low-temperature (kT ~ 0.6 keV) thermal emission in a non-equilibrium ionization state, but also a very high temperature (kT ~ 3.4 keV) component with a very low ionization timescale (~ 2.7e9 cm^{-3}s), or a hard non-th…
The discovery of a type I X-ray burst from the faint unidentified transient source IGR J17445-2747 in the Galactic bulge by the JEM-X telescope onboard the INTEGRAL observatory is reported. Type I bursts are believed to be associated with thermonuclear explosions of accreted matter on the surface of a neutron star with a weak magnetic field in a low-mass X-ray binary. Thus, this observation allows the nature of this source to be established.
We apply XCLUMPY, an X-ray spectral model from a clumpy torus in an active galactic nucleus (AGN), to the broadband X-ray spectra of 10 obscured AGNs observed with both Suzaku and NuSTAR. The infrared spectra of these AGNs were analyzed with the CLUMPY code. Since XCLUMPY adopts the same clump distribution as that in the CLUMPY, we can directly compare the torus parameters obtained from the X-ray spectra and those from the infrared ones. The torus angular widths determined from the infrared spectra ($σ_{\mathrm{IR}}$) are systematically larger than those from the X-ray data ($σ_{\mathrm{X}}$);…
Suzaku View of the Swift/BAT Active Galactic Nuclei. V. Torus Structure of Two Luminous Radio-loud AGNs (3C 206 and PKS 0707-35)
We present the results from broad-band X-ray spectral analysis of 3C 206 and PKS 0707-35 with Suzaku and Swift/BAT, two of the most luminous unobscured and obscured radio-loud active galactic nuclei with hard X-ray luminosities of 10^{45.5} erg s^{-1} and 10^{44.9} erg s^{-1} (14--195 keV), respectively. Based on the radio core luminosity, we estimate that the X-ray spectrum of 3C 206 contains a significant (~ 60% in the 14--195 keV band) contribution from the jet, while it is negligible in PKS 0707-35. We can successfully model the spectra with the jet component (for 3C 206), the transmitted …
We present the broadband (0.5-100 keV) spectra of three heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), NGC 1106, UGC 03752, and NGC 2788A, observed with Suzaku and Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). The targets are selected from the Swift/BAT 70-month catalog on the basis of high hardness ratio between above and below 10 keV, and their X-ray spectra are reported here for the first time. We apply three models, a conventional model utilizing an analytic reflection code and two Monte-Carlo based torus models with a doughnut-like geometry (MYTorus) and with a nearly spherical geometry (Ikeda toru…
The mean white dwarf (WD) mass in the Galactic bulge cataclysmic variables (CVs) was measured by applying the the shock temperature-WD mass correlation of magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) to the Galactic Bulge X-ray Emission (GBXE) spectra. However, the resulting mean WD mass is lower than that of the local CVs. This discrepancy could be explained by the dominating sources in the GBXE are non-mCVs instead of mCVs. In this work, we conduct an thorough investigation on the X-ray spectra of local DNe from \suzaku\ archives, and derive semi-empirical correlations between the shock temperature…
We consider the angular distribution of the photon signal which could arise from velocity-dependent dark matter annihilation within the Galactic bulge. We find that, for the case of Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation, dark matter annihilation within the bulge is dominated by slow speed particles which never leave the bulge, allowing one to find a simple analytic relationship between the dark matter profile within the Galactic bulge and the angular distribution. On the other hand, for the case $p$- or $d$-wave annihilation, we find that the small fraction of high-speed particles which can leave t…
We present results from a sample of XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of interstellar clouds that cast shadows in the soft X-ray background (SXRB) - the first uniform analysis of such a sample from these missions. By fitting to the on- and off-shadow spectra, we separated the foreground and Galactic halo components of the SXRB. We tested different foreground models - two solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) models and a Local Bubble (LB) model. We also examined different abundance tables. We found that Anders & Grevesse (1989) abundances, commonly used in previous SXRB studies, may result in ove…
Energy Spectra of the Soft X-ray Diffuse Emission in Fourteen Fields Observed with Suzaku
If the mysterious Fermi-LAT GeV gamma-ray excess is due to an unresolved population of millisecond pulsars (MSP) in the Galactic bulge, one expects this very same population to shine in X rays. For the first time, we address the question of what is the sensitivity of current X-ray telescopes to an MSP population in the Galactic bulge. To this end, we create a synthetic population of Galactic MSPs, building on an empirical connection between gamma- and X-ray MSP emission based on observed source properties. We compare our model with compact sources in the latest Chandra source catalog, applying…
The Galactic Center Excess (GCE) is an extended gamma-ray source in the central region of the Galaxy found in Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) data. One of the leading explanations for the GCE is an unresolved population of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the Galactic bulge. Due to differing star formation histories it is expected that the MSPs in the Galactic bulge are older and therefore dimmer than those in the Galactic disk. Additionally, correlations between the spectral parameters of the MSPs and the spin-down rate of the corresponding neutron stars have been observed. This implies t…
By revisiting the Suzaku and XMM-Newton data of the North Polar Spur, we discovered that the spectra are inconsistent with the traditional model consisting of pure thermal emission and neutral absorption. The most prominent discrepancies are the enhanced O VII and Ne IX forbidden-to-resonance ratios, and a high O VIII Ly$β$ line relative to other Lyman series. A collisionally ionized absorption model can naturally explain both features, while a charge exchange component can only account for the former. By including the additional ionized absorption, the plasma in the North Polar Spur can be de…
