Effects of strong longitudinal colour electric fields (SCF), shadowing, and quenching on the open prompt charm mesons (D$^0$, D$^+$, D$^{*+}$, D${_s}{^+}$) production in central Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV are investigated within the framework of the {\small HIJING/BB v2.0} model. We compute the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm PbPb}^{\rm D}$, and show that the above nuclear effects constitute important dynamical mechanisms in the description of experimental data. The strength of colour fields (as characterized by the string tension $κ$), partonic energy loss and jet quenching process lead to a suppression factor consistent with recent published data. Predictions for future beauty mesons measurements have been included. Ratios of strange to non-strange prompt charm mesons in central Pb + Pb and minimum bias (MB) $ p + p$ collisions at 2.76 TeV are also discussed. Minimum bias $p + p$ collisions which constitute theoretical baseline in our calculations are studied at the centre of mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV.
Charm particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS energies is considered within a statistical approach. Namely, the Statistical Model of the Early Stage is used to calculate mean multiplicity of charm particles in central Pb+Pb collisions. A small number of produced charm particles necessitates the use of the exact charm conservation law. The model predicts a rapid increase of mean charm multiplicity as a function of collision energy. The mean multiplicity calculated for central Pb+Pb collisions at the center of mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$ GeV exceed…
Models and experimental effort concerning open and hidden charm production in nuclear collisions discussed at Cern Workshop in December 99 are reviewed. The most recent development is also mentioned.
We investigate with a transport approach the cold and hot nuclear matter effects on the charmonium transverse momentum distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The newly defined nuclear modification factor $r_{AA}=\langle p_{T}^2\rangle_{AA}/\langle p_{T}^2\rangle_{pp}$ and elliptic flow $v_2$ for $J/ψ$ are sensitive to the nature of the hot medium and the thermalization of heavy quarks. From SPS through RHIC to LHC colliding energies, we observe dramatic changes in the centrality dependence of $r_{AA}$. We find that at LHC energy, the finally observed charmonia are dominated by the…
The meson production cross sections are estimated considering photon-photon interactions in hadron - hadron collisions at CERN LHC energies. We consider a large number of mesons with photon-photon partial decay width well constrained by the experiment and some mesons which are currently considered as hadronic molecule and glueball candidates. Our results demonstrate that the experimental analysis of these states is feasible at CERN - LHC.
We present predictions for the inclusive production of charmed hadrons at the CERN LHC in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme at next-to-leading order. Detailed numerical results are compared to data where available, or presented in a way to ease future comparisons with experimental results. We also point out that measurements at large rapidity have the potential to pin down models of intrinsic charm.
The complete understanding of the basic constituents of hadrons and the hadronic dynamics at high energies are two of the main challenges for the theory of strong interactions. In particular, the existence of intrinsic heavy quark components in the hadron wave function must be confirmed (or disproved). In this paper we propose a new mechanism for the production of $D$-mesons at forward rapidities based on the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) formalism and demonstrate that the resulting transverse momentum spectra are strongly dependent on the behavior of the charm distribution at large Bjorken $x$…
We study the momentum dependence of the production of light nuclei in high energy collisions in the nucleon coalescence/recombination mechanism. We derive formulas of the momentum distributions of deuterons ($d$) and helions ($^3$He). We obtain the analytic expressions of the coalescence factor $B_A$'s ($B_2$ for $d$ and $B_3$ for $^3$He) as functions of the collision system size and the momentum. We apply the deduced results to p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions to naturally explain the interesting behaviors of $B_A$ observed in experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
Production of open and hidden charm hadrons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model. Charmed quarks and antiquarks are assumed to be created at the initial stage of the reaction and their number is conserved during the evolution of the system. They are distributed among open and hidden charm hadrons at the hadronization stage in accordance with laws of statistical mechanics. The model is in excellent agreement with the experimental data on J/psi production in lead-lead collisions at CERN SPS and predicts strong enhancement of the open charm multiplicity o…
In these proceedings, we apply the recently developed S-ACOT-MPS factorization scheme at the next-to-leading order to prompt charm production at hadron colliders. It provides a good agreement with experimental data on charm meson production measured by LHCb at 7 and 13 TeV. The low-$p_T$ data are on the margins of the theoretical error bands, emphasizing the importance of including contributions beyond the next-to-leading order.
The next-generation high-energy facilities, the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the prospective $e^+e^-$ International Linear Collider (ILC), are expected to unravel new structures of matter and forces from the electroweak scale to the TeV scale. In this report we review the complementary role of LHC and ILC in drawing a comprehensive and high-precision picture of the mechanism breaking the electroweak symmetries and generating mass, and the unification of forces in the frame of supersymmetry.
Widths of the rapidity distributions of various identified hadrons generated with the UrQMD-3.4 event generator at all the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) energies have been presented and compared with the existing experimental results. An increase in the width of the rapidity distribution of $Λ$ could be seen with both Monte Carlo (MC) and experimental data for the studied energies. Using MC data, the study has been extended to Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. A similar jump, as observed in the plot of rapidity width versus rest mass at Alternati…
Both D0 and CDF at Tevatron reported the measurements of forward-backward asymmetry in top pair production, which showed possible deviation from the standard model QCD prediction. In this paper, we explore how to examine the {\em same} higher-order QCD effects at the more powerful Large Hadron Collider.
We study the hadroproduction of a CP-even or CP-odd neutral Higgs boson in association with a Z boson in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) We include the contributions from quark-antiquark annihilation at the tree level and those from gluon-gluon fusion, which proceeds via quark and squark loops, and list compact analytic results. We quantitatively analyze the hadronic cross sections at the CERN Large Hadron Collider assuming a favorable supergravity-inspired MSSM scenario.
We discuss the new data for the production of the $ψ'$ meson in pA collisions at 450 GeV at CERN-SPS (of the NA50-collaboration) [1]. We extract from the CERN data $σ(ψ' N)\approx 8$ mb under the assumption that the $ψ'$ is produced as a result of the space-time evolution of a point-like $c\bar c$ pair which expands with time to the full size of the charmonium state. In the analysis we assume the existence of a relationship between the distribution of color in a hadron and the cross section of its interaction with a nucleon. However, our result is rather sensitive to the pattern of the expansi…
This paper presents the latest development at CERN, concentrating on the status of the LHC and the strategy for future linear colliders. The immediate plans include the exploitation of the LHC at its design luminosity and energy as well as upgrades to the LHC (luminosity and energy) and to its injectors. This may be complemented by a linear electron-positron collider, based on the technology being developed by the Compact Linear Collider and by the International Linear Collider and/or by a high-energy electron-proton collider. This contribution describes the various future directions, all of w…
In Phys. Rev. D 58, 014014 (1998) and 71, 094013 (2005), we determined non-perturbative D^0, D^+, D^{*+}, D_s^+, and Lambda_c^+ fragmentation functions, both at leading and next-to-leading order in the MS-bar factorization scheme, by fitting e^+e^- data taken by the OPAL Collaboration at CERN LEP1. The starting points for the evolution in the factorization scale mu were taken to be mu_0 = 2m_Q, where Q = c,b. For the reader's convenience, in this Addendum, we repeat this analysis for mu_0 = m_Q, where the flavor thresholds of modern sets of parton density functions are located.
We use an event-by-event hydrodynamical description of the heavy-ion collision process with Glauber initial conditions to calculate the thermal emission of photons. The photon rates in the hadronic phase follow from a spectral function approach and a density expansion, while in the partonic phase they follow from the AMY perturbative rates. The calculated photon elliptic flows are lower than those reported recently by both the ALICE and PHENIX collaborations.
Cross sections are calculated for single and double photon exchange in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. The particle production is simulated with the DPMJET event generator. Large cross sections are found for particle production around mid-rapidity making these processes an important background to hadronic nuclear interactions at both the trigger and analysis levels.
By solving the rate equation in an expanding quark-gluon plasma, we study thermal production of charm quarks in central Pb+Pb collisions at the Future Circular Collider. With the charm quark production cross section taken from the perturbative QCD at the next-to-leading order, we find that charm quark production from the quark-gluon plasma can be appreciable compared to that due to initial hard scattering between colliding nucleons.
We study the prospects for constraining the Higgs boson's couplings to up and down quarks using kinematic distributions in Higgs production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We find that the Higgs $p_T$ distribution can be used to constrain these couplings with precision competitive to other proposed techniques. With 3000 fb$^{-1}$ of data at 13 TeV in the four-lepton decay channel, we find $-0.73 \lesssim \barκ_u \lesssim 0.33$ and $-0.88 \lesssim \barκ_d \lesssim 0.32$, where $\barκ_q = (m_q/m_b) κ_q$ is a scaling factor that modifies the $q$ quark Yukawa coupling relative to the Standard M…
We study in details the space-time dependence of the production of muonic, pionic, and other exotic atoms by the coherent photon exchange between nuclei at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. We show that a multipole expansion of the electromagnetic interaction yields an useful insight of the bound-free production mechanism which has not been explored in the literature. Predictions for the spatial, temporal, and angular distribution, as well as the total cross sections, for the production of exotic atoms are also included.
Three tightly inter-related topics have been discussed: the $pp(p\bar p)$ total cross section; the single diffraction dissociation cross section; the $p(\bar p)d$ total cross section and the defect of the total cross section in scattering from deuteron.
Identification of charmonium states at hadron colliders has mostly been limited to leptonic decays of the J/ψ. In this paper we present and algorithm to identify hadronic decays of charmonium states (J/ψ, ψ(2S), χ_{c0,1,2}) which make up the large majority of all decays. The algorithm is able to identify hadronic $J/ψ$ decays with an efficiency of 36\% while suppressing a background of quark and gluon jets by a factor 100.
It was proposed that the electric fields may lead to chiral separation in QGP, which is called the chiral electric separation effect. The strong electromagnetic field and the QCD vacuum can both completely be produced in the off-central nuclear-nuclear collision. We used the Wood-Saxon nucleon distribution to calculate the electric field distributions of the off-central collisions. The chiral electro field spatial distribution at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energy regions are systematically studied in this paper. Compared with magnetic field spatial d…
Vector meson production in ultra-peripheral pA and AA collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are very sensitive to Parton Distribution Functions (PDF) as well as to their leading-order, next-to-leading-order, and medium corrections. This process is a complimentary tool to explore the effects of different PDFs in particle production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus central collisions. Existing and forthcoming data available, e.g., from ALICE and CMS, may be used in conjunction with our theoretical predictions to constrain the PDFs. We make predictions for rapidity distributions…
Proton-proton (pp) collisions have been traditionally used as a baseline measurement in the search for a deconfined state of matter in heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. The unprecedented collision energies that are available at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Laboratory for Nuclear Research (CERN) have illuminated new challenges in understanding the possible formation of droplets of this deconfined matter of partonic degrees of freedom in hadronic collisions, especially in high-multiplicity events. Enhancement of multi-strange particles compared to pions, degr…
In this paper we investigate the Exotic Charmonium (EC) production in $γγ$ interactions present in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies as well as for the proposed energies of the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Our results demonstrate that the experimental study of these processes is feasible and can be used to constrain the theoretical decay widths and shed some light on the configuration of the considered multiquark states.
We investigate the significance of thermal dilepton radiation in the intermediate-mass region in heavy-ion reactions at CERN-SpS energies. Within a thermal fireball model for the space-time evolution, the radiation from hot matter is found to dominate over hard 'background' processes (Drell-Yan and open charm) up to invariant masses of about 2 GeV, with a rather moderate fraction emerging from early stages with temperatures $T\simeq 175-200$ MeV associated with deconfined matter. Further including a schematic acceptance for the NA50 experiment we find good agreement with the observed enhanceme…
We present calculations for the incoherent photoproduction of J/$ψ$ vector mesons in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions (UPC) in terms of hadronic interactions. This study was carried out using the recently developed Monte Carlo model CRISP extended to include UPCs at LHC energies. A careful study of re-scattering and destruction of the J/$ψ$ particles is presented for PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV. We have also compared our method to AuAu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV measured at RHIC.
We analyze the prospects for discovering supersymmetry at the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LEP colliders in the scenario that the lightest supersymmetric particle is a gravitino of mass < 1 keV. We consider in particular the case that the lightest neutralino has a nearly 100% branching fraction into gravitino + photon within the detector. This implies that supersymmetric events should contain both missing (transverse) energy and two energetic photons. Therefore one can search for supersymmetry simply through inclusive production of superpartners. We consider the exclusion and reach capabilities …
We study flavor changing effects on the \ppbchT process at the Large Hadron Collider(LHC), which are inspired by the left-handed up-type squark mixings in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model(MSSM). We find that the SUSY QCD radiative corrections to $bcH^\pm$ coupling can significantly enhance the cross sections at the tree-level by a factor about $1.5 \sim 5$ with our choice of parameters. We conclude that the squark mixing mechanism in the MSSM makes the \ppbchT process a new channel for discovering a charged Higgs boson and investigating flavor changing effects.
We consider a general class of models with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking in which the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. Several qualitatively different scenarios arise for the phenomenology of such models, depending on which superpartner(s) decay dominantly to the gravitino. At LEP2, neutralino pair production and slepton pair production can lead to a variety of promising discovery signals, which we systematically study. We investigate the impact of backgrounds for these signals and show how they can be reduced, and outline the effects of model parameter variations on …
At Large Hadron Collider energy, the expected large multiplicities suggests the presence of collective behavior even in pp collisions. A hydrodynamical approach has been applied to estimate the expected elliptic flow measured by the azimuthal asymmetry parameter $v_2$, in pp collisions at $\surd$s = 14 TeV. $v_2$ of $π^-$ is found to be strongly dependent on the parton density profile inside a proton [e.g., surface diffuseness parameter ($ξ$)]. For $ξ$ = 0.105, $v_2$ is found to be positive while at $ξ$ = 0.25, $v_2$ is close to zero and approaches negative values at large $p_t$. The impact pa…
In this paper we conduct a phenomenological study for the search of evidence for the intrinsic charm mechanism in double $J/ψ$ production at the COMPASS experiment using the CERN $π^-$ beam at 190 GeV/c. We also re-review the double $J/ψ$ production data provided by the NA3 experiment using the CERN $π^-$ beam at 150 and 280 GeV/c with incident on a platinum target.
We explore the feasibility of the measurement of charm-jet cross sections in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering at the future Electron-Ion Collider. This channel provides clean sensitivity to the strangeness content of the nucleon in the high-$x$ region. We estimate charm-jet tagging performance with parametrized detector simulations. We show the expected sensitivity to various scenarios for strange parton distribution functions. We argue that this measurement will be key to future QCD global analyses, so it should inform EIC detector designs and luminosity requirements.
Triple gauge boson production at the LHC can be used to test the robustness of the Standard Model and provide useful information for VBF di-boson scattering measurement. Especially, any derivations from SM prediction will indicate possible new physics. In this paper we present a detailed Monte Carlo study on measuring WWW production in pure leptonic and semileptonic decays, and probing anomalous quartic gauge WWWW couplings at the CERN LHC and future hadron collider, with parton shower and detector simulation effects taken into account. Apart from cut-based method, multivariate boosted decisio…
We compute cross sections for incoherent and coherent diffractive J/Psi production in ultraperipheral nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions using two different dipole models fitted to HERA data. We obtain a reasonably good description of the available ALICE data for coherent J/Ψproduction and present our prediction for the incoherent cross section. We also find that while the normalization of the cross section depends quite strongly on the dipole model and vector meson wave function used, the rapidity dependence is very well constrained.
We have performed a systematic study of J/$ψ$ and $ψ$(2S) production in p--p collisions at different Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies and at different rapidities using the leading order non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics model of heavy quarkonium production. We have included the contributions from hiher excited states decaying to J$ψ$ . The calculated values have been compared with the available data from the four experiments at LHC, namely ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb. In the case of ALICE, inclusive J/$ψ$ and $ψ$(2S) cross-sections have been calculated by including the feed-down from …
The next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the Standard Model process of single top production, $bg \to t W^-$, for the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV have been calculated. For renormalization and factorization scales $μ=μ_0$ ($μ_0=m_t+m_W$), the NLO hadronic cross section is $\sim 37 $ pb, while $\sim 25 $ pb for tree level. The NLO QCD corrections can enhance the cross section by a factor from 1.33 to 1.66 for $\frac{μ_0}{2} < μ< 2 μ_0$.
We compute v4/(v2)^2 in ideal and viscous hydrodynamics. We investigate its sensitivity to details of the hydrodynamic model and compare the results to experimental data from RHIC. Whereas v2 has a significant sensitivity only to initial eccentricity and viscosity while being insensitive to freeze out temperature, we find that v4/(v2)^2 is quite insensitive to initial eccentricity. On the other hand, it can still be sensitive to shear viscosity in addition to freeze out temperature, although viscous effects do not universally increase v4/(v2)^2 as originally predicted. Consistent with data, we…
Hadronic resonances, having very short lifetime, like $\rm{K}^{*0}$, can act as useful probes to understand and estimate lifetime of hadronic phase in ultra-relativistic proton-proton, p--Pb and heavy-ion collisions. Resonances with relatively longer lifetime, like $ϕ$ meson, can serve as a tool to locate the QGP phase boundary. We estimate a lower limit of hadronic phase lifetime in Cu--Cu and Au--Au collisions at RHIC, and in pp, p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions at different LHC collision energies. Also, we obtain the effective temperature of $ϕ$ meson using Boltzmann-Gibbs Blast-Wave function, w…
We show that the accumulated LEP-II data taken at $\sqrt{s} =$ 130 to 206 GeV can establish more restrictive bounds on doubly charged bileptons couplings and masses than any other experiment so far. We also analyze the discovery potential of a prospective linear collider operating in both $e^+ e^-$ and $e γ$ modes.
Lepton-hadron colliders that use a proton or nucleus beam of current and future hadron colliders and let it collide with an electron beam from a newly built electron accelerator bring attractive physics programs which are strong and complementary to the hadron collider physics. Machine development for Energy Recovery LINAC and physics performance studies of such electron-hadron colliders, specifically the LHeC that uses the existing LHC beam and FCC-eh that is an option of Future Circular Collider program, are ongoing and reviewed in this article.
We analyze the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to search for excited spin-1/2 electrons and neutrinos. Assuming a SU(2)_L X U(1)_Y invariant model, we study in detail the single production of excited electrons and neutrinos and respective backgrounds through the reactions p p -> e+ e- V and e+- νV with V=photon, W, or Z. We show that the LHC will be able to tighten considerably the direct constraints on these possible new states, probing excited lepton masses up to 1-2 TeV depending on their couplings to fermions and gauge bosons.
We analyse in detail the possibility of Bose-Einstein condensation of pions produced in heavy-ion collisions at the beam energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. Our approach is based on the chemical non-equilibrium thermal model of hadron production which has been generalised to include separately the contribution from the local zero-momentum state. In order to study both the hadronic multiplicities and the transverse-momentum spectra, we use the Cracow freeze-out model which parameterises the flow and space-time geometry of the system at freeze-out in a very economic way. Our analysis indicate…
We argue that the measurement of open charm gives a unique opportunity to test the validity of pQCD-based and statistical models of nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies. We show that various approaches used to estimate D-meson multiplicity in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV give predictions which differ by more than a factor of 100. Finally we demonstrate that decisive experimental results concerning the open charm yield in A+A collisions can be obtained using data of the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS.
Photoproduction of heavy quarks in ultraperipheral collisions can help elucidate important features of the physics of heavy quarks in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Due to the dependence on parton distributions it can also potentially offer some constraining ability in the determination of nuclear parton distributions. In the present study we consider next-to-leading order (NLO) photoproduction of heavy quarks in ultraperipheral proton-proton (pp), proton-nucleus (pA), and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Total cross sections and rapidity distributions ar…
We study the production of the charged Higgs boson at the LHC in the left-right symmetric model. It is shown that there exists a lower bound of the cross section. We investigate that predicted cross sections of this model are generally larger than those of the two Higgs doublet model or the minimal supersymmetric model.
We investigate the QCD effects in the production of neutral Higgs bosons via bottom quark fusion in both the standard model and the minimal supersymmetric standard model at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We include the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections (including supersymmetric QCD) and the threshold resummation effects. We use the soft-collinear effective theory to resum the large logarithms near threshold from soft gluon emission. Our results show that the resummation effects can enhance the total cross sections by about 5% compared with the NLO results.
The production of the \mssm\ Higgs bosons $H^0,h^0,A^0$ and $H^\pm$, in the intermediate mass range of the $A^0$, at two different values of $\tanβ$, is studied at the possible CERN LEP$\otimes$LHC $ep$ collider, through $γp$ interactions, by photons generated via Compton back--scattering of laser light. Signatures in which $H^0,h^0,A^0\ar b\bar b$ and $H^\pm\ar τν_τ$ are considered. Flavour identification on $b$--jets is assumed. Backgrounds to Higgs signals are computed. Explicit formulae for the helicity amplitudes of the Higgs processes are given.
The HIJING (Heavy-ion Jet Interaction Generator) Monte Carlo model is updated with the latest parton distributions functions (PDF) and new set of the parameters in the two-component mini-jet model that controls total $p+p$ cross section and the central pseudorapity density. We study hadron spectra and multiplicity distributions using the HIJING 2.0 model and compare to recent experimental data from $p+p$ collisions at the LHC energies. We also give predictions of hadron production in $p+p$, $p+Pb$ and $Pb+Pb$ collisions at the full LHC energy.
The multiplicity percentile dependence of cumulants, of net-proton number distributions in Au$-$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 200 GeV and Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 2.76 TeV has been investigated using the Angantyr model (the heavy-ion extension of the \textsc{Pythia 8} model). The effects of finite transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm T}$) and pseudorapidity ($η$) acceptance on the net-proton cumulants have also been studied. Furthermore, the effects of the hydrodynamic expansion and feed down from weak decays were explored. It was found that radial flow has substantial impact…
The first reports of $ψ$ and $ψ'$ production from experiment NA50 at the CERN SPS are compared to predictions based on a hadronic model of charmonium suppression. Data on centrality dependence and total cross sections are in good accord with these predictions.
We study the hadroproduction of two neutral Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, which provides a handle on the trilinear Higgs couplings. We include the contributions from quark-antiquark annihilation at the tree level and those from gluon-gluon fusion, which proceeds via quark and squark loops. We list compact results for the tree-level partonic cross sections and the squark loop amplitudes, and we confirm previous results for the quark loop amplitudes. We quantitatively analyze the hadronic cross sections at the CERN Large Hadron Collider assuming a fa…
Triggered by ongoing experimental analyses, we report on a study of the cross section ratio sigma(pp -> ttbb)/sigma(pp -> ttjj) at the next-to-leading order in QCD, focusing on both present and future collider energies: sqrt{s}= 7, 8, 13 TeV. In particular, we provide a comparison between our predictions and the currently available CMS data for the 8 TeV run. We further analyse the kinematics and scale uncertainties of the two processes for a single set of parton distribution functions, with the goal of assessing possible correlations that might help to reduce the theoretical error of the rati…
In supersymmetric theory, the sfermion-fermion-gaugino interactions conserve the chirality of (s)fermions. The effect appears as the charge asymmetry in $m(jl)$ distributions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider where jets and leptons arise from the cascade decay $\tilde{q} \to q \tildeχ^0_2 \to ql\tilde{l}$. Furthermore, the decay branching ratios and the charge asymmetries in $m(jl)$ distributions are flavor non-universal due to the $\tilde{l}_L$ and $\tilde{l}_R$ mixing. When $\tanβ$ is large, the non-universality between $e$ and $μ$ becomes $O(10)%$ level. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation …
After a few microseconds of the creation of our Universe through the Big Bang, the primordial matter was believed to be a soup of the fundamental constituents of matter -- quarks and gluons. This is expected to be created in the laboratory by colliding heavy nuclei at ultra-relativistic speeds. A plasma of quarks and gluons, called Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) can be created at the energy and luminosity frontiers in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA, and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. Heavy quarks, namely the…
The Physics Beyond Colliders initiative is an exploratory study aimed at exploiting the full scientific potential of the CERN's accelerator complex and scientific infrastructures through projects complementary to the LHC and other possible future colliders. These projects will target fundamental physics questions in modern particle physics. This document presents the status of the proposals presented in the framework of the Beyond the Standard Model physics working group, and explore their physics reach and the impact that CERN could have in the next 10-20 years on the international landscape.
