Graphene is only one atom thick and becomes the ultimate thin film to explore membrane physics and mechanics. Here we study hierarchy of graphene wrinkles induced by thermal strain engineering and demonstrate that the wrinkling hierarchy can be accounted for by the wrinklon theory. We derive an equation λ = (ky)0.5 explaining evolution of wrinkling wavelength λ with the distance to the edge y observed in our experiment by considering both bending energy and stretching energy of the graphene flakes. The prefactor k in the equation is determined to be about 55 nm, which is independent of the size of the graphene flakes. Our experimental result indicates that the classical membrane behavior of graphene persists down to about 100 nm of the wrinkling wavelength.
Graphene, dubbed as a two-dimensional material represents the topological concept of "surface" embedded in a three-dimensional space. This regard enables to employ existing theories/tools in topology to understand different properties/observations in graphene. Under the light of the long-established "Gauss's Theorema Egregium" we study wrinkled graphene, observing a peculiar correlation between morphology and strain distribution. Compressing graphene on water serves as an effectual platform to realize wrinkles; we explain the evolution of the wrinkles and the global distribution of the strain …
The electronic and optical properties of graphene can be precisely tuned by generating deterministic arrangements of strain features. In this paper, we report the formation of widespread and controlled buckling delamination of monolayer graphene deposited on hexagonal boron-nitride promoted by a significant squeezing of the graphene flake and induced by polymeric micro-actuators. The flexibility of this method offers a promising technique to create arbitrary buckling geometries and arrays of wrinkles which could also be subjected to iterative folding-unfolding cycles. Further development of th…
The deformation of monolayer graphene, produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), on a polyester film substrate has been investigated through the use of Raman spectroscopy. It has been found that the microstructure of the CVD graphene consists of a hexagonal array of islands of flat monolayer graphene separated by wrinkled material. During deformation, it was found that the rate of shift of the Raman 2D band wavenumber per unit strain was less than 25% of that of flat flakes of mechanically-exfoliated graphene, whereas the rate of band broadening per unit strain was about 75% of that of the …
Gallium nitride nanowire and nanorod substrates with different morphology are prospective platforms allowing to control the local strain distribution in graphene films top of them, resulting in an induction of pseudomagnetic fields. Atomic force microscopy measurements performed in a HybriD mode complemented by scanning electron microscopy allow for a detailed visualization of the strain distribution on graphene surface. Graphene in direct contact with supporting regions is tensile strained, while graphene located in-between is characterized by lower strain. Characteristic tensile strained wri…
We consider the role of deformations in graphene heterostructures with hexagonal crystals (including strain, wrinkles and dislocations) on the geometrical properties of moire patterns characteristic for a pair of two incommensurate misaligned isostructural crystals. By, employing a phenomenological theory to describe generic moire perturbation in van der Waals heterostructures of graphene and hexagonal crystals we investigate the electronic properties of such heterostructure.
We investigate the relaxation of rectangular wrinkled thin films intrinsically containing an initial strain gradient. A preferential rolling direction, depending on wrinkle geometry and strain gradient, is theoretically predicted and experimentally verified. In contrast to typical rolled-up nanomembranes, which bend perpendicular to the longer edge of rectangular patterns, we find a regime where rolling parallel to the long edge of the wrinkled film is favorable. A non-uniform radius of the rolled-up film is well reproduced by elasticity theory and simulations of the film relaxation using a fi…
We demonstrate that circular graphene ring under a shear stress displays strong pseudo-magnetic fields. We calculate the pseudo-magnetic field both from continuum elasticity theory as well as molecular dynamics simulations. Stable wrinkles are induced by shear deformations and lead to enhancement of the pseudo-magnetic field. The strong pseudo-magnetic field found here can be observed by imaging graphene flake at the atomic level e.g. through scanning tunneling microscope.
Here we study the evolution of local electronic properties of a twisted graphene bilayer induced by a strain and a high curvature. The strain and curvature strongly affect the local band structures of the twisted graphene bilayer; the energy difference of the two low-energy van Hove singularities decreases with increasing the lattice deformations and the states condensed into well-defined pseudo-Landau levels, which mimic the quantization of massive Dirac fermions in a magnetic field of about 100 T, along a graphene wrinkle. The joint effect of strain and out-of-plane distortion in the graphen…
Spatially nonuniform strain is important for engineering the pseudomagnetic field and band structure of graphene. Despite the wide interest in strain engineering, there is still a lack of control on device-compatible strain patterns due to the limited understanding of the structure-strain relationship. Here, we study the effect of substrate corrugation and curvature on the strain profiles of graphene via combined experimental and theoretical studies of a model system: graphene on closely packed SiO2 nanospheres with different diameters (20-200 nm). Experimentally, via quantitative Raman analys…
The appearance of single photon sources in atomically thin semiconductors holds great promises for the development of a flexible and ultra-compact quantum technology, in which elastic strain engineering can be used to tailor their emission properties. Here, we show a compact and hybrid 2D-semiconductor-piezoelectric device that allows for controlling the energy of single photons emitted by quantum emitters localized in wrinkled WSe2 monolayers. We demonstrate that strain fields exerted by the piezoelectric device can be used to tune the energy of localized excitons in WSe2 up to 18 meV in a re…
An equilibrium phase diagram for the shape of compressively strained free-hanging films is developed by total strain energy minimization. For small strain gradients Δε, the film wrinkles, while for sufficiently large Δε, a phase transition from wrinkling to bending occurs. We consider competing relaxation mechanisms for free-hanging films, which have rolled up into tube structures, and we provide an upper limit for the maximum achievable number of tube rotations.
The availability of accessible fabrication methods based on deterministic transfer of atomically thin crystals has been essential for the rapid expansion of research into van der Waals heterostructures. An inherent issue of these techniques is the deformation of the polymer carrier film during the transfer, which can lead to highly non-uniform strain induced in the transferred two-dimensional material. Here, using a combination of optical spectroscopy, atomic force and Kelvin probe force microscopy, we show that the presence of nanometer scale wrinkles formed due to transfer-induced stress rel…
Graphene is a mechanically robust 2D material promising for flexible optoelectronic applications. However, its electromagnetic properties under strain are experimentally poorly understood. Here we present the far-infrared transmission spectra of large-area chemical-vapor deposited monolayer graphene on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate subjected to uniaxial strain. The effective strain value is calibrated using the Raman spectroscopy and corrected for a relaxation of wrinkles and folds seen directly by atomic-force microscopy. We find that while the Drude weight and the Fermi level remain…
We show that when the pseudomagnetic fields created by long wavelength deformations are appropriately coupled with a scalar electric potential, a significant energy gap can emerge due to the formation of a Haldane state. Ramifications of this physical effect are examined through the study of various strain geometries commonly seen in experiments, such as strain superlattices and wrinkled suspended graphene. Of particular technological importance, we consider setup where this gap can be tunable through electrostatic gates, allowing for the design of electronic devices not realizable with other …
Delamination of coatings and thin films from substrates generates a fascinating variety of patterns, from circular blisters to wrinkles and labyrinth domains, in a way that is not completely understood. We report on large-scale numerical simulations of the universal problem of avoidance and coalescence of delamination wrinkles, focusing on a case study of graphene sheets on patterned substrates. By nucleating and growing wrinkles in a controlled way, we are able to characterize how their interactions, mediated by long-range stress fields, determine their formation and morphology. We also study…
Thin membranes exhibit complex responses to external forces or geometrical constraints. A familiar example is the wrinkling, exhibited by human skin, plant leaves, and fabrics, resulting from the relative ease of bending versus stretching. Here, we study the wrinkling of graphene, the thinnest and stiffest known membrane, deposited on a silica substrate decorated with silica nanoparticles. At small nanoparticle density monolayer graphene adheres to the substrate, detached only in small regions around the nanoparticles. With increasing nanoparticle density, we observe the formation of wrinkles …

Upon cooling, branched line defects develop in epitaxial graphene grown at high temperature on Pt(111) and Ir(111). Using atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy we demonstrate that these defects are wrinkles in the graphene layer, i.e. stripes of partially delaminated graphene. With low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) we investigate the wrinkling phenomenon in situ. Upon temperature cycling we observe hysteresis in the appearance and disappearance of the wrinkles. Simultaneously with wrinkle formation a change in bright field imaging intensity of adjacent areas and a shift in the …
Realizing flexible strain sensor with high sensitivity and tunable gauge factor is a challenge. To meet this challenge, we report an ionic liquid gated three-dimensional graphene field effect strain sensor. The charge carrier concentration in this 3D graphene is modulated by applied electric field through an all-around self-assembled electrical double layer capacitance formed at the interface of graphene with ionic liquid. Strain causes folding and unfolding of microscopic wrinkles and formation of cracks in the graphene network altering transistor behavior. Mechanical deformation of graphene …
The control of strain in two-dimensional materials opens exciting perspectives for the engineering of their electronic properties. While this expectation has been validated by artificial-lattice studies, it remains elusive in the case of atomic lattices. Remarkable results were obtained on nanobubbles and nano-wrinkles, or using scanning probes; microscale strain devices were implemented exploiting deformable substrates or external loads. These devices lack, however, the flexibility required to fully control and investigate arbitrary strain profiles. Here, we demonstrate a novel approach makin…
Controlled wrinkling of single-layer graphene (1-LG) at nanometer scale was achieved by introducing monodisperse nanoparticles (NPs), with size comparable to the strain coherence length, underneath the 1-LG. Typical fingerprint of the delaminated fraction of 1-LG is identified as substantial contribution to the principal Raman modes of the 1-LG. Correlation analysis of the Raman shift of the modes clearly resolved the 1-LG in contact and delaminated from the substrate, respectively. Intensity of Raman features of the delaminated 1-LG increases linearly with the amount of the wrinkles, determin…
The configuration of graphene (GE) sheet conforming to the spherical surface substrate is studied through theoretical model and molecular simulations. Two basic configurations are observed: fully conformation and wrinkling. The final configuration of the adsorbed GE results from the competition between two energy terms: the adhesion energy between GE and substrate, the strain energy stored in the GE due to the deformations. Here, we derive theoretical solutions by accounting for two energy terms, and predict the final morphology of GE on the spherical surface (a special kind of nano-developabl…
Charge density waves are ubiquitous phenomena in metallic transition metal dichalcogenides. In NbSe$_2$, a triangular $3\times3$ structural modulation is coupled to a charge modulation. Recent experiments reported evidence for a triangular-stripe transition at the surface, due to strain or accidental doping and associated to a $4\times4$ modulation. We employ \textit{ab-initio} calculations to investigate the strain-induced structural instabilities in a pristine single layer and analyse the energy hierarchy of the structural and charge modulations. Our results support the observation of phase …
The recent progress in the growth of large-area boron nitride epilayers opens up new possibilities for future applications. However, it remains largely unclear how weakly attached two-dimensional BN layers interact with their substrate and how their properties are influenced by defects. In this work, we investigate hBN layers grown by Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) using Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in the temperature range of 160-540 K. Our measurements reveal strong differences in the character of layer-substrate interaction for as-grown and delaminated epitaxial…
