Image inpainting is the art of predicting damaged regions of an image. The manual way of image inpainting is a time consuming. Therefore, there must be an automatic digital method for image inpainting that recovers the image from the damaged regions. In this paper, a novel statistical image inpainting algorithm based on Kriging interpolation technique was proposed. Kriging technique automatically fills the damaged region in an image using the information available from its surrounding regions in such away that it uses the spatial correlation structure of points inside the k-by-k block. Kriging has the ability to face the challenge of keeping the structure and texture information as the size of damaged region heighten. Experimental results showed that, Kriging has a high PSNR value when recovering a variety of test images from scratches and text as damaged regions.
We propose the first deep learning solution to video frame inpainting, a challenging instance of the general video inpainting problem with applications in video editing, manipulation, and forensics. Our task is less ambiguous than frame interpolation and video prediction because we have access to both the temporal context and a partial glimpse of the future, allowing us to better evaluate the quality of a model's predictions objectively. We devise a pipeline composed of two modules: a bidirectional video prediction module, and a temporally-aware frame interpolation module. The prediction modul…
Recovering the missing regions of an image is a task that is called image inpainting. Depending on the shape of missing areas, different methods are presented in the literature. One of the challenges of this problem is extracting features that lead to better results. Experimental results show that both global and local features are useful for this purpose. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale image inpainting method that utilizes both local and global features. The first step of this method is to determine how many scales we need to use, which depends on the width of the lines in the map of…
There are many methods for image enhancement. Image inpainting is one of them which could be used in reconstruction and restoration of scratch images or editing images by adding or removing objects. According to its application, different algorithmic and learning methods are proposed. In this paper, the focus is on applications, which enhance the old and historical scratched images. For this purpose, we proposed an adaptive spline interpolation. In this method, a different number of neighbors in four directions are considered for each pixel in the lost block. In the previous methods, predictin…
Image interpolation has been used spaciously by customary interpolation techniques. Recently, Kriging technique has been widely implemented in simulation area and geostatistics for prediction. In this article, Kriging technique was used instead of the classical interpolation methods to predict the unknown points in the digital image array. The efficiency of the proposed technique was proven using the PSNR and compared with the traditional interpolation techniques. The results showed that Kriging technique is almost accurate as cubic interpolation and in some images Kriging has higher accuracy.…
Inpainting is the technique of reconstructing unknown or damaged portions of an image in a visually plausible way. Inpainting algorithm automatically fills the damaged region in an image using the information available in undamaged region. Propagation of structure and texture information becomes a challenge as the size of damaged area increases. In this paper, a hierarchical inpainting algorithm using wavelets is proposed. The hierarchical method tries to keep the mask size smaller while wavelets help in handling the high pass structure information and low pass texture information separately. …
The art of recovering an image from damage in an undetectable form is known as inpainting. The manual work of inpainting is most often a very time consuming process. Due to digitalization of this technique, it is automatic and faster. In this paper, after the user selects the regions to be reconstructed, the algorithm automatically reconstruct the lost regions with the help of the information surrounding them. The existing methods perform very well when the region to be reconstructed is very small, but fails in proper reconstruction as the area increases. This paper describes a Hierarchical me…
Image denoising is a critical issue in the field of digital image processing. This paper proposes a novel Salt & Pepper noise suppression by developing a Kriging Interpolation Filter (KIF) for image denoising. Gray-level images degraded with Salt & Pepper noise have been considered. A sequential search for noise detection was made using kXk window size to determine non-noisy pixels only. The non-noisy pixels are passed into Kriging interpolation method to predict their absent neighbor pixels that were noisy pixels at the first phase. The utilization of Kriging interpolation filter proves that …

Nowadays, the need for user editing in a 3D scene has rapidly increased due to the development of AR and VR technology. However, the existing 3D scene completion task (and datasets) cannot suit the need because the missing regions in scenes are generated by the sensor limitation or object occlusion. Thus, we present a novel task named free-form 3D scene inpainting. Unlike scenes in previous 3D completion datasets preserving most of the main structures and hints of detailed shapes around missing regions, the proposed inpainting dataset, FF-Matterport, contains large and diverse missing regions …

Digital image inpainting is an interpolation problem, inferring the content in the missing (unknown) region to agree with the known region data such that the interpolated result fulfills some prior knowledge. Low-rank and nonlocal self-similarity are two important priors for image inpainting. Based on the nonlocal self-similarity assumption, an image is divided into overlapped square target patches (submatrices) and the similar patches of any target patch are reshaped as vectors and stacked into a patch matrix. Such a patch matrix usually enjoys a property of low rank or approximately low rank…
The widespread availability of satellite images has allowed researchers to model complex systems such as disease dynamics. However, many satellite images have missing values due to measurement defects, which render them unusable without data imputation. For example, the scanline corrector for the LANDSAT 7 satellite broke down in 2003, resulting in a loss of around 20\% of its data. Inpainting involves predicting what is missing based on the known pixels and is an old problem in image processing, classically based on PDEs or interpolation methods, but recent deep learning approaches have shown…

We propose a novel single-image super-resolution approach based on the geostatistical method of kriging. Kriging is a zero-bias minimum-variance estimator that performs spatial interpolation based on a weighted average of known observations. Rather than solving for the kriging weights via the traditional method of inverting covariance matrices, we propose a supervised form in which we learn a deep network to generate said weights. We combine the kriging weight generation and kriging process into a joint network that can be learned end-to-end. Our network achieves competitive super-resolution r…
Inpainting based image compression approaches, especially linear and non-linear diffusion models, are an active research topic for lossy image compression. The major challenge in these compression models is to find a small set of descriptive supporting points, which allow for an accurate reconstruction of the original image. It turns out in practice that this is a challenging problem even for the simplest Laplacian interpolation model. In this paper, we revisit the Laplacian interpolation compression model and introduce two fast algorithms, namely successive preconditioning primal dual algorit…

We propose to learn a generative model via entropy interpolation with a Schrödinger Bridge. The generative learning task can be formulated as interpolating between a reference distribution and a target distribution based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence. At the population level, this entropy interpolation is characterized via an SDE on $[0,1]$ with a time-varying drift term. At the sample level, we derive our Schrödinger Bridge algorithm by plugging the drift term estimated by a deep score estimator and a deep density ratio estimator into the Euler-Maruyama method. Under some mild smoothness…
Interpolation and internal painting are one of the basic approaches in image internal painting, which is used to eliminate undesirable parts that occur in digital images or to enhance faulty parts. This study was designed to compare the interpolation algorithms used in image in-painting in the literature. Errors and noise generated on the colour and grayscale formats of some of the commonly used standard images in the literature were corrected by using Cubic, Kriging, Radial based function and High dimensional model representation approaches and the results were compared using standard image c…

Prediction beyond partial observations is crucial for robots to navigate in unknown environments because it can provide extra information regarding the surroundings beyond the current sensing range or resolution. In this work, we consider the inpainting of semantic Bird's-Eye-View maps. We propose SePaint, an inpainting model for semantic data based on generative multinomial diffusion. To maintain semantic consistency, we need to condition the prediction for the missing regions on the known regions. We propose a novel and efficient condition strategy, Look-Back Condition (LB-Con), which perfor…

We consider the problem of filling in missing spatio-temporal regions of a video. We provide a novel flow-based solution by introducing a generative model of images in relation to the scene (without missing regions) and mappings from the scene to images. We use the model to jointly infer the scene template, a 2D representation of the scene, and the mappings. This ensures consistency of the frame-to-frame flows generated to the underlying scene, reducing geometric distortions in flow based inpainting. The template is mapped to the missing regions in the video by a new L2-L1 interpolation scheme…

Generation of photo-realistic images, semantic editing and representation learning are a few of many potential applications of high resolution generative models. Recent progress in GANs have established them as an excellent choice for such tasks. However, since they do not provide an inference model, image editing or downstream tasks such as classification can not be done on real images using the GAN latent space. Despite numerous efforts to train an inference model or design an iterative method to invert a pre-trained generator, previous methods are dataset (e.g. human face images) and archit…
During orthopaedic surgery, the inserting of metallic implants or screws are often performed under mobile C-arm systems. Due to the high attenuation of metals, severe metal artifacts occur in 3D reconstructions, which degrade the image quality greatly. To reduce the artifacts, many metal artifact reduction algorithms have been developed and metal inpainting in projection domain is an essential step. In this work, a score-based generative model is trained on simulated knee projections and the inpainted image is obtained by removing the noise in conditional resampling process. The result implies…

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a technology for non-invasive imaging of anatomical features in detail. It can help in functional analysis of organs of a specimen but it is very costly. In this work, methods for (i) virtual three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction from a single sequence of two-dimensional (2D) slices of MR images of a human spine and brain along a single axis, and (ii) generation of missing inter-slice data are proposed. Our approach helps in preserving the edges, shape, size, as well as the internal tissue structures of the object being captured. The sequence of original 2D …

Inpainting is a learned interpolation technique that is based on generative modeling and used to populate masked or missing pieces in an image; it has wide applications in picture editing and retouching. Recently, inpainting started being used for watermark removal, raising concerns. In this paper we study how to manipulate it using our markpainting technique. First, we show how an image owner with access to an inpainting model can augment their image in such a way that any attempt to edit it using that model will add arbitrary visible information. We find that we can target multiple different…
Many images nowadays are captured from behind the glasses and may have certain stains discrepancy because of glass and must be processed to make differentiation between the glass and objects behind it. This research paper proposes an algorithm to remove the damaged or corrupted part of the image and make it consistent with other part of the image and to segment objects behind the glass. The damaged part is removed using total variation inpainting method and segmentation is done using kmeans clustering, anisotropic diffusion and watershed transformation. The final output is obtained by interpol…

The recent increase in the extensive use of digital imaging technologies has brought with it a simultaneous demand for higher-resolution images. We develop a novel edge-informed approach to single image super-resolution (SISR). The SISR problem is reformulated as an image inpainting task. We use a two-stage inpainting model as a baseline for super-resolution and show its effectiveness for different scale factors (x2, x4, x8) compared to basic interpolation schemes. This model is trained using a joint optimization of image contents (texture and color) and structures (edges). Quantitative and qu…

Recently, impressive denoising results have been achieved by Bayesian approaches which assume Gaussian models for the image patches. This improvement in performance can be attributed to the use of per-patch models. Unfortunately such an approach is particularly unstable for most inverse problems beyond denoising. In this work, we propose the use of a hyperprior to model image patches, in order to stabilize the estimation procedure. There are two main advantages to the proposed restoration scheme: Firstly it is adapted to diagonal degradation matrices, and in particular to missing data problems…
