This paper proposes a semantic segmentation method for outdoor scenes captured by a surveillance camera. Our algorithm classifies each perceptually homogenous region as one of the predefined classes learned from a collection of manually labelled images. The proposed approach combines two different types of information. First, color segmentation is performed to divide the scene into perceptually similar regions. Then, the second step is based on SIFT keypoints and uses the bag of words representation of the regions for the classification. The prediction is done using a Naïve Bayesian Network as a generative classifier. Compared to existing techniques, our method provides more compact representations of scene contents and the segmentation result is more consistent with human perception due to the combination of the color information with the image keypoints. The experiments conducted on a publicly available data set demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.
This paper addresses the problem of change detection from a novel perspective of long-term map learning. We are particularly interested in designing an approach that can scale to large maps and that can function under global uncertainty in the viewpoint (i.e., GPS-denied situations). Our approach, which utilizes a compact bag-of-words (BoW) scene model, makes several contributions to the problem: 1) Two kinds of prior information are extracted from the view sequence map and used for change detection. Further, we propose a novel type of prior, called motion prior, to predict the relative motion…

Pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs) learn to align vision and language representations on large-scale datasets, where each image-text pair usually contains a bag of semantic concepts. However, existing open-vocabulary object detectors only align region embeddings individually with the corresponding features extracted from the VLMs. Such a design leaves the compositional structure of semantic concepts in a scene under-exploited, although the structure may be implicitly learned by the VLMs. In this work, we propose to align the embedding of bag of regions beyond individual regions. The pro…

This paper addresses the problem of semantic-based image retrieval of natural scenes. A typical content-based image retrieval system deals with the query image and images in the dataset as a collection of low-level features and retrieves a ranked list of images based on the similarities between features of the query image and features of images in the image dataset. However, top ranked images in the retrieved list, which have high similarities to the query image, may be different from the query image in terms of the semantic interpretation of the user which is known as the semantic gap. In ord…

To identify and fit geometric primitives (e.g., planes, spheres, cylinders, cones) in a noisy point cloud is a challenging yet beneficial task for fields such as robotics and reverse engineering. As a multi-model multi-instance fitting problem, it has been tackled with different approaches including RANSAC, which however often fit inferior models in practice with noisy inputs of cluttered scenes. Inspired by the corresponding human recognition process, and benefiting from the recent advancements in image semantic segmentation using deep neural networks, we propose BAGSFit as a new framework ad…
The use of bag of visual words (BOW) model for modelling images based on local invariant features computed at interest point locations has become a standard choice for many computer vision tasks. Visual vocabularies generated from image feature vectors are expected to produce visual words that are discriminative to improve the performance of image annotation systems. Most techniques that adopt the BOW model in annotating images declined favorable information that can be mined from image categories to build discriminative visual vocabularies. To this end, this paper introduces a detailed framew…

The recognition of texts existing in camera-captured images has become an important issue for a great deal of research during the past few decades. This give birth to Scene Character Recognition (SCR) which is an important step in scene text recognition pipeline. In this paper, we extended the Bag of Features (BoF)-based model using deep learning for representing features for accurate SCR of different languages. In the features coding step, a deep Sparse Auto-encoder (SAE)-based strategy was applied to enhance the representative and discriminative abilities of image features. This deep learnin…
Scene text recognition (STR) on Latin datasets has been extensively studied in recent years, and state-of-the-art (SOTA) models often reach high accuracy. However, the performance on non-Latin transcripts, such as Chinese, is not satisfactory. In this paper, we collect six open-source Chinese STR datasets and evaluate a series of classic methods performing well on Latin datasets, finding a significant performance drop. To improve the performance on Chinese datasets, we propose a novel radical-embedding (RE) representation to utilize the ideographic descriptions of Chinese characters. The ideog…
Arbitrary-oriented object detection is a fundamental task in visual scenes involving aerial images and scene text. In this report, we present PP-YOLOE-R, an efficient anchor-free rotated object detector based on PP-YOLOE. We introduce a bag of useful tricks in PP-YOLOE-R to improve detection precision with marginal extra parameters and computational cost. As a result, PP-YOLOE-R-l and PP-YOLOE-R-x achieve 78.14 and 78.28 mAP respectively on DOTA 1.0 dataset with single-scale training and testing, which outperform almost all other rotated object detectors. With multi-scale training and testing,…

The transfer of a neural network (CNN) trained to recognize objects to the task of scene classification is considered. A Bag-of-Semantics (BoS) representation is first induced, by feeding scene image patches to the object CNN, and representing the scene image by the ensuing bag of posterior class probability vectors (semantic posteriors). The encoding of the BoS with a Fisher vector(FV) is then studied. A link is established between the FV of any probabilistic model and the Q-function of the expectation-maximization(EM) algorithm used to estimate its parameters by maximum likelihood. A network…

The field of Numismatics provides the names and descriptions of the symbols minted on the ancient coins. Classification of the ancient coins aims at assigning a given coin to its issuer. Various issuers used various symbols for their coins. We propose to use these symbols for a framework that will coarsely classify the ancient coins. Bag of visual words (BoVWs) is a well established visual recognition technique applied to various problems in computer vision like object and scene recognition. Improvements have been made by incorporating the spatial information to this technique. We apply the Bo…
Current top-performing blind perceptual image quality prediction models are generally trained on legacy databases of human quality opinion scores on synthetically distorted images. Therefore they learn image features that effectively predict human visual quality judgments of inauthentic, and usually isolated (single) distortions. However, real-world images usually contain complex, composite mixtures of multiple distortions. We study the perceptually relevant natural scene statistics of such authentically distorted images, in different color spaces and transform domains. We propose a bag of fea…
In recent scene recognition research images or large image regions are often represented as disorganized "bags" of features which can then be analyzed using models originally developed to capture co-variation of word counts in text. However, image feature counts are likely to be constrained in different ways than word counts in text. For example, as a camera pans upwards from a building entrance over its first few floors and then further up into the sky Fig. 1, some feature counts in the image drop while others rise -- only to drop again giving way to features found more often at higher elevat…
Scene classification is a fundamental task in interpretation of remote sensing images, and has become an active research topic in remote sensing community due to its important role in a wide range of applications. Over the past years, tremendous efforts have been made for developing powerful approaches for scene classification of remote sensing images, evolving from the traditional bag-of-visual-words model to the new generation deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The deep CNN based methods have exhibited remarkable breakthrough on performance, dramatically outperforming previous method…
In this work we present a framework for the recognition of natural scene text. Our framework does not require any human-labelled data, and performs word recognition on the whole image holistically, departing from the character based recognition systems of the past. The deep neural network models at the centre of this framework are trained solely on data produced by a synthetic text generation engine -- synthetic data that is highly realistic and sufficient to replace real data, giving us infinite amounts of training data. This excess of data exposes new possibilities for word recognition model…
In this study, we propose a novel scene descriptor for visual place recognition. Unlike popular bag-of-words scene descriptors which rely on a library of vector quantized visual features, our proposed descriptor is based on a library of raw image data, such as publicly available photo collections from Google StreetView and Flickr. The library images need not to be associated with spatial information regarding the viewpoint and orientation of the scene. As a result, these images are cheaper than the database images; in addition, they are readily available. Our proposed descriptor directly mines…

With the development of deep learning, many state-of-the-art natural image scene classification methods have demonstrated impressive performance. While the current convolution neural network tends to extract global features and global semantic information in a scene, the geo-spatial objects can be located at anywhere in an aerial image scene and their spatial arrangement tends to be more complicated. One possible solution is to preserve more local semantic information and enhance feature propagation. In this paper, an end to end multiple instance dense connected convolution neural network (MID…
We propose a method to infer a dense depth map from a single image, its calibration, and the associated sparse point cloud. In order to leverage existing models (teachers) that produce putative depth maps, we propose an adaptive knowledge distillation approach that yields a positive congruent training process, wherein a student model avoids learning the error modes of the teachers. In the absence of ground truth for model selection and training, our method, termed Monitored Distillation, allows a student to exploit a blind ensemble of teachers by selectively learning from predictions that best…
Extracting texts of various size and shape from images containing multiple objects is an important problem in many contexts, especially, in connection to e-commerce, augmented reality assistance system in natural scene, etc. The existing works (based on only CNN) often perform sub-optimally when the image contains regions of high entropy having multiple objects. This paper presents an end-to-end text detection strategy combining a segmentation algorithm and an ensemble of multiple text detectors of different types to detect text in every individual image segments independently. The proposed st…
Object recognition is an important problem in computer vision, having diverse applications. In this work, we construct an end-to-end scene recognition pipeline consisting of feature extraction, encoding, pooling and classification. Our approach simultaneously utilize global feature descriptors as well as local feature descriptors from images, to form a hybrid feature descriptor corresponding to each image. We utilize DAISY features associated with key points within images as our local feature descriptor and histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) corresponding to an entire image as a global desc…

We apply deep belief networks of restricted Boltzmann machines to bags of words of sift features obtained from databases of 13 Scenes, 15 Scenes and Caltech 256 and study experimentally their behavior and performance. We find that the final performance in the supervised phase is reached much faster if the system is pre-trained. Pre-training the system on a larger dataset keeping the supervised dataset fixed improves the performance (for the 13 Scenes case). After the unsupervised pre-training, neurons arise that form approximate explicit representations for several categories (meaning they are…

In Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), Loop Closure Detection (LCD) is essential to minimize drift when recognizing previously visited places. Visual Bag-of-Words (vBoW) has been an LCD algorithm of choice for many state-of-the-art SLAM systems. It uses a set of visual features to provide robust place recognition but fails to perceive the semantics or spatial relationship between feature points. Previous work has mainly focused on addressing these issues by combining vBoW with semantic and spatial information from objects in the scene. However, they are unable to exploit spatial info…

Sharing multimodal information (typically images, videos or text) in Social Network Sites (SNS) occupies a relevant part of our time. The particular way how users expose themselves in SNS can provide useful information to infer human behaviors. This paper proposes to use multimodal data gathered from Instagram accounts to predict the perceived prototypical needs described in Glasser's choice theory. The contribution is two-fold: (i) we provide a large multimodal database from Instagram public profiles (more than 30,000 images and text captions) annotated by expert Psychologists on each perceiv…
Current research on visual place recognition mostly focuses on aggregating local visual features of an image into a single vector representation. Therefore, high-level information such as the geometric arrangement of the features is typically lost. In this paper, we introduce a novel learning-based approach to place recognition, using RGB-D cameras and line clusters as visual and geometric features. We state the place recognition problem as a problem of recognizing clusters of lines instead of individual patches, thus maintaining structural information. In our work, line clusters are defined a…
