Use of social network is the basic functionality of today's life. With the advent of more and more online social media, the information available and its utilization have come under the threat of several anomalies. Anomalies are the major cause of online frauds which allow information access by unauthorized users as well as information forging. One of the anomalies that act as a silent attacker is the horizontal anomaly. These are the anomalies caused by a user because of his/her variable behaviour towards different sources. Horizontal anomalies are difficult to detect and hazardous for any ne…
In this paper, we propose a novel approach, called SENATUS, for joint traffic anomaly detection and root-cause analysis. Inspired from the concept of a senate, the key idea of the proposed approach is divided into three stages: election, voting and decision. At the election stage, a small number of \nop{traffic flow sets (termed as senator flows)}senator flows are chosen\nop{, which are used} to represent approximately the total (usually huge) set of traffic flows. In the voting stage, anomaly detection is applied on the senator flows and the detected anomalies are correlated to identify the m…
We present a method to detect anomalies in a time series of flow interaction patterns. There are many existing methods for anomaly detection in network traffic, such as number of packets. However, there is non established method detecting anomalies in a time series of flow interaction patterns that can be represented as complex network. Firstly, based on proposed multivariate flow similarity method on temporal locality, a complex network model (MFS-TL) is constructed to describe the interactive behaviors of traffic flows. Having analyzed the relationships between MFS-TL characteristics, tempor…
It is difficult to implement an efficient detection approach for Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and many factors contribute to this challenge. One such challenge concerns establishing adequate boundaries and finding a proper data source. Typical IDS detection approaches deal with raw traffics. These traffics need to be studied in depth and thoroughly investigated in order to extract the required knowledge base. Another challenge involves implementing the binary decision. This is because there are no reasonable limits between normal and attack traffics patterns. In this paper, we introduce a…
Cloud computing is one of the highly flexible, confidential and easily accessible medium of platforms and provides powerful service for sharing information over the Internet. Cloud security has become an emerging issue as network manager eventually encounter its data protection, vulnerability during information exchange on the cloud system. We can protect our data from unwanted access on a hybrid cloud through controlling the respective firewall of the network. But, the firewall has already proved its weakness as it is unable to ensure multi-layered, secured accessibility of the cloud network.…
In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to detect anomaly in terms of Key Parameter Indicators (KPI)s over live cellular networks based on the combination of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), as Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks (R-CNN). CNN models the spatial correlations and information, whereas, RNN models the temporal correlations and information. In this paper, the studied cellular network consists of 2G, 3G, 4G, and 4.5G technologies, and the KPIs include Voice and data traffic of the cells. The data and voice traffic are extremely import…

Future Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV), and more generally ITS, will form a highly interconnected system. Such a paradigm is referred to as the Internet of Vehicles (herein Internet of CAVs) and is a prerequisite to orchestrate traffic flows in cities. For optimal decision making and supervision, traffic centres will have access to suitably anonymized CAV mobility information. Safe and secure operations will then be contingent on early detection of anomalies. In this paper, a novel unsupervised learning model based on deep autoencoder is proposed to detect the self-reported location ano…
Despite the robust structure of the Internet, it is still susceptible to disruptive routing updates that prevent network traffic from reaching its destination. Our research shows that BGP announcements that are associated with disruptive updates tend to occur in groups of relatively high frequency, followed by periods of infrequent activity. We hypothesize that we may use these bursty characteristics to detect anomalous routing incidents. In this work, we use manually verified ground truth metadata and volume of announcements as a baseline measure, and propose a burstiness measure that detects…

This paper aims at precisely detecting and identifying anomalous events in IP traffic. To this end, we adopt the link stream formalism which properly captures temporal and structural features of the data. Within this framework, we focus on finding anomalous behaviours with respect to the degree of IP addresses over time. Due to diversity in IP profiles, this feature is typically distributed heterogeneously, preventing us to directly find anomalies. To deal with this challenge, we design a method to detect outliers as well as precisely identify their cause in a sequence of similar heterogeneous…
Understanding network health is essential to improve Internet reliability. For instance, detecting disruptions in peer and provider networks facilitates the identification of connectivity problems. Currently this task is time consuming for network operators. It involves a fair amount of manual observation because operators have little visibility into other networks. In this paper we leverage the RIPE Atlas measurement platform to monitor and analyze network conditions. We propose a set of complementary methods to detect network disruptions from traceroute measurements. A novel method of detect…

DoS and DDoS attacks have been growing in size and number over the last decade and existing solutions to mitigate these attacks are in general inefficient. Compared to other types of malicious cyber attacks, DoS and DDoS attacks are particularly more challenging to combat. With their ability to mask themselves as legitimate traffic, developing methods to detect these types of attacks on a packet or flow level, has proven to be a difficult task. In this paper, we explore the potential of Variational Autoencoders to serve as a component within an intelligent security solution that differentiates…

This paper addresses network anomography, that is, the problem of inferring network-level anomalies from indirect link measurements. This problem is cast as a low-rank subspace tracking problem for normal flows under incomplete observations, and an outlier detection problem for abnormal flows. Since traffic data is large-scale time-structured data accompanied with noise and outliers under partial observations, an efficient modeling method is essential. To this end, this paper proposes an online subspace tracking of a Hankelized time-structured traffic tensor for normal flows based on the Cande…
In the authors' opinion, anomaly detection systems, or ADS, seem to be the most perspective direction in the subject of attack detection, because these systems can detect, among others, the unknown (zero-day) attacks. To detect anomalies, the authors propose to use machine synesthesia. In this case, machine synesthesia is understood as an interface that allows using image classification algorithms in the problem of detecting network anomalies, making it possible to use non-specialized image detection methods that have recently been widely and actively developed. The proposed approach is that t…
