We revisit the relativistic restricted two-body problem with spin employing a perturbation scheme based on Lie series. Starting from a post-Newtonian expansion of the field equations, we develop a first-order secular theory that reproduces well-known relativistic effects such as the precession of the pericentre and the Lense-Thirring and geodetic effects. Additionally, our theory takes into full account the complex interplay between the various relativistic effects, and provides a new explicit solution of the averaged equations of motion in terms of elliptic functions. Our analysis reveals the presence of particular configurations for which non-periodical behaviour can arise. The application of our results to real astrodynamical systems (such as Mercury-like and pulsar planets) highlights the contribution of relativistic effects to the long-term evolution of the spin and orbit of the secondary body.
In the last decade a major debate has emerged on the astrophysics community concerning the anomalous behaviour of the astronomical unit, the fundamental scale of distances in the Solar system. Several independent studies have combined radar ranging and optical data from the last four decades to come to the conclusion that the astronomical unit is increasing by several meters per century. It is abundantly clear that General Relativity cannot account for this new effect, although an still undefined angular momentum transfer mechanism could provide the simpler and more conventional explanation. H…
We study the secular, hierarchical three-body problem to first-order in a post-Newtonian expansion of General Relativity. We expand the first-order post-Newtonian Hamiltonian to leading-order in the ratio of the semi-major axis of the two orbits. In addition to the well-known terms that correspond to the GR precession of the inner and outer orbits, we find a new secular post-Newtonian interaction term that can affect the long-term evolution of the triple. We explore the parameter space for highly inclined and eccentric systems, where the Kozai-Lidov mechanism can produce large-amplitude oscill…
The angular momentum flux from an inspiralling binary system of compact objects moving in quasi-elliptical orbits is computed at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order using the multipolar post-Minkowskian wave generation formalism. The 3PN angular momentum flux involves the instantaneous, tail, and tail-of-tails contributions as for the 3PN energy flux, and in addition a contribution due to non-linear memory. We average the angular momentum flux over the binary's orbit using the 3PN quasi-Keplerian representation of elliptical orbits. The averaged angular momentum flux provides the final input …
The binary black holes (BBHs) formed near the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the galactic nuclei would undergo eccentricity excitation due to the gravitational perturbations from the SMBH and therefore merger more efficiently. In this paper, we study the coupling of the three body 1st post-Newtonian (PN) effects with the spin effects from the SMBH in the hierarchical triple system. We extend previous work by including the coupling between the de Sitter precession and the Lense-Thirring precession from the SMBH spin. This coupling includes both the precessions of the inner orbit angular mo…
With continuous advances in technology, future satellite gradiometry missions will be capable of performing precision relativistic experiments and imposing constraints on modern gravity theories. To this end, the full first-order post-Newtonian tidal tensor under inertially guided and Earth-pointing local frames along post-Newtonian orbits is worked out. The physical picture behind the "Mashhoon-Theiss anomaly" is explained at the post-Newtonian level. The relativistic precession of the local frame with respect to the sidereal frame will produce modulations of Newtonian tidal forces along cert…
We derive the secular evolution of the orbital elements of a stellar-mass object orbiting a spinning massive black hole. We use the post-Newtonian approximation in harmonic coordinates, with test-body equations of motion for the conservative dynamics that are valid through 3PN order, including spin-orbit, quadrupole and (spin)$^2$ effects, and with radiation-reaction contributions linear in the mass of the body that are valid through 4.5PN order, including the 4PN damping effects of spin-orbit coupling. The evolution equations for the osculating orbit elements are iterated to high PN orders us…
Post-Newtonian secular dynamics of hierarchical triples II. Canonical derivation of the 1PN $\times$ quadrupole cross terms and of the quadrupole-squared term
HERO (Highly Eccentric Relativity Orbiter) is a space-based mission concept aimed to perform several tests of post-Newtonian gravity around the Earth with a preferably drag-free spacecraft moving along a highly elliptical path fixed in its plane undergoing a relatively fast secular precession. We considered two possible scenarios: a fast, 4-hr orbit with high perigee height of $1,047\,\mathrm{km}$, and a slow, 21-hr path with a low perigee height of $642\,\mathrm{km}$. HERO may detect, for the first time, the post-Newtonian orbital effects induced by the mass quadrupole moment $J_2$ of the Ear…
The set up of matched filters for the detection of gravitational waves from in-spiraling compact binaries is usually carried out using the restricted post-Newtonian approximation: the filter phase is modelled including post-Newtonian corrections, whereas the amplitude is retained at the Newtonian order. Here we investigate the effects of the introduction of post-Newtonian corrections also to the amplitude and we discuss some of the implications for signal detection and parameter estimation.
Continuing work initiated in earlier publications [Ichita, Yamada and Asada, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 83}, 084026 (2011); Yamada and Asada, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 86}, 124029 (2012)], we examine the post-Newtonian (PN) effects on the stability of the triangular solution in the relativistic three-body problem for general masses. For three finite masses, a condition for stability of the triangular solution is obtained at the first post-Newtonian (1PN) order, and it recovers previous results for the PN restricted three-body problem when one mass goes to zero. The stability regions still exist even at the 1PN…
Post-Newtonian secular dynamics of hierarchical triples. I. Eccentricity-, inclination- and node-dependence of the multiple-scale formulation, and its canonical consistency
In the present paper, using the first-order approximation of the $n$-body Lagrangian (derived on the basis of the post-Newtonian gravitational theory of Einstein, Infeld, and Hoffman), we explicitly write down the equations of motion for the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Additionally, with some simplified assumptions, we obtain two formulas for estimating the values of the mass/distance and velocity/speed of light ratios appropriate for a given post-Newtonian approximation. We show that the formulas derived in the present study, lead to a good numerical conservation of the Jac…
The leading order effect of the spin of a distant supermassive black hole (SMBH) on the orbit of compact binary revolving around it appears at the 1.5 post Newtonian (PN) expansion through coupling with the inner and outer orbital angular momenta, and makes an oscillating characteristic contribution to the secular evolution of the compact binary eccentricity over a long time scale compared to the Kozai-Lidov dynamics caused by a non-spinning SMBH.
The dynamics of a binary system with two spinning components on an eccentric orbit is studied, with the inclusion of the spin-spin interaction terms appearing at the second post-Newtonian order. A generalized true anomaly parametrization properly describes the radial component of the motion. The average over one radial period of the magnitude of the orbital angular momentum $\bar{L}$ is found to have no nonradiative secular change. All spin-spin terms in the secular radiative loss of the energy and magnitude of orbital angular momentum are given in terms of $\bar{L}$ and other constants of the…
We study the dynamics of the planar circular restricted three-body problem in the context of a pseudo-Newtonian approximation. By using the Fodor-Hoenselaers-Perjés procedure, we perform an expansion in the mass potential of a static massive spherical source up to the first non-Newtonian term, giving place to a gravitational potential that includes first-order general relativistic effects. With this result, we model a system composed by two pseudo-Newtonian primaries describing circular orbits around their common center of mass, and a test particle orbiting the system in the equatorial plane. …
The advance of the pericenter of the orbit of a test body around a massive body in general relativity can be calculated in a number of ways. In one method, one studies the geodesic equation in the exact Schwarzschild geometry and finds the angle between pericenters as an integral of a certain radial function between turning points of the orbit. In another method, one describes the orbit using osculating orbit elements, and analyzes the "Lagrange planetary equations" that give the evolution of the elements under the perturbing effects of post-Newtonian (PN) corrections to the motion. After sepa…
In this paper we try to suggest a possible novel method to determine some selected even zonal harmonics J_l of the Earth's geopotential. Time series many years long of suitably linearly combined residuals of some Keplerian orbital elements of certain existing geodetic SLR satellites would be examined. A CHAMP/GRACE-only background reference model should be used for the part of the geopotential which we are not interested in. The retrieved values for the even zonal harmonics of interest would be, by construction, independent of each other and of any post-Newtonian features. The so obtained mini…
The dynamics of the planar circular restricted three-body problem with Kerr-like primaries in the context of a beyond-Newtonian approximation is studied. The beyond-Newtonian potential is developed by using the Fodor-Hoenselaers-Perjés procedure. An expansion in the Kerr potential is performed and terms up-to the first non-Newtonian contribution of both the mass and spin effects are included. With this potential, a model for a test particle of infinitesimal mass orbiting in the equatorial plane of the two primaries is examined. The introduction of a parameter, $ε$, allows examination of the sy…
In this paper we use the latest corrections to the Newton-Einstein secular perihelion rates of some planets of the Solar System, phenomenologically estimated with the EPM2004 ephemerides by the Russian astronomer E.V. Pitjeva, to put severe constraints on the range parameter lambda characterizing the Yukawa-like modifications of the Newtonian inverse-square law of gravitation. It turns out that the range cannot exceed about one tenth of an Astronomical Unit. We assumed neither equivalence principle violating effects nor spatial variations of $α$ and $λ$. This finding may have important consequ…
The proximity of the MOND acceleration constant with cosmological accelerations -- for example, a0 cH0/2pi -- points to its possibly decreasing with cosmic time. I begin to consider the secular changes induced in galactic systems by such presumed variations, assumed adiabatic. It is important to understand these effects, in isolation from other evolutionary influences, in order to identify or constrain a0 variations by detection of induced effects, or lack thereof. I find that as long as the system is fully in the deep-MOND regime -- as applies to many galactic systems -- the adiabatic respons…
We derive all second post-Newtonian (2PN), non-precessional effects of spin- orbit coupling on the gravitational wave forms emitted by an inspiraling binary composed of spinning, compact bodies in a quasicircular orbit. Previous post- Newtonian calculations of spin-orbit effects (at 1.5PN order) relied on a fluid description of the spinning bodies. We simplify the calculations by introducing into post-Newtonian theory a delta-function description of the influence of the spins on the bodies' energy-momentum tensor. This description was recently used by Mino, Shibata, and Tanaka (MST) in Teukols…
We report the existence of a gravitational-wave-driven secular instability in neutron star binaries, acting on the equilibrium tide. The instability is similar to the classic Chandrasekhar-Friedman-Schutz (CFS) instability of normal modes and is active when the spin of the primary star exceeds the orbital frequency of the companion. Modeling the neutron star as a Newtonian n=1 polytrope, we calculate the instability time scale, which can be as low as a few seconds at small orbital separations but still larger than the inspiral time scale. The implications for orbital and spin evolution are als…
We perform some numerical study of the secular triaxial instability of rigidly rotating homogeneous fluid bodies in general relativity. In the Newtonian limit, this instability arises at the bifurcation point between the Maclaurin and Jacobi sequences. It can be driven in astrophysical systems by viscous dissipation. We locate the onset of instability along several constant baryon mass sequences of uniformly rotating axisymmetric bodies for compaction parameter $M/R = 0-0.275$. We find that general relativity weakens the Jacobi like bar mode instability, but the stabilizing effect is not very …
Coalescing binary systems are one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves. The technique of matched filtering used in the detection of gravitational waves from coalescing binaries relies on the construction of accurate templates. Until recently filters modelled on the quadrupole or the Newtonian approximation were deemed sufficient. Recently it was shown that post-Newtonian effects contribute to a secular growth in the phase difference between the actual signal and its corresponding Newtonian template. In this paper we investigate the possibility of compensating for the phase diff…
The inspiral and merger of supermassive black hole binary systems with high orbital eccentricity are among the promising sources of the advanced gravitational wave observatories. In this paper we derive analytic ready-to-use first post-Newtonian eccentric waveform in Fourier domain with the use of Hansen coefficients. Introducing generic perturbations of celestial mechanics we have generalized the Hansen expansion to the first post-Newtonian order which are then used to express the waveforms. Taking into account the high eccentricity of the orbit leads to the appearance of secular terms in the…
Binary systems subject to generic perturbations evolve on quasiperiodic orbits. We derive the most generic class of perturbations, which allow to evaluate secular effects via generalized complex true and eccentric anomaly parameters, by use of the residue theorem. Such perturbations include both the generic Brumberg force and various linear contributions to the conservative dynamics of compact binaries, up to the second post-Newtonian order. As an example, we compute the self-spin contribution to the luminosity due to gravitational radiation of a compact binary consisting of galactic black hol…
Continuing work initiated in an earlier publication [Ichita, Yamada and Asada, Phys. Rev. D 83, 084026 (2011)], we reexamine the post-Newtonian effects on Lagrange's equilateral triangular solution for the three-body problem. For three finite masses, it is found that a triangular configuration satisfies the post-Newtonian equation of motion in general relativity, if and only if it has the relativistic corrections to each side length. This post-Newtonian configuration for three finite masses is not always equilateral and it recovers previous results for the restricted three-body problem when on…
Applying the recently developed dynamical perturbation formalism on cosmological background to scalar-tensor theory, we provide a solid theoretical basis and a rigorous justification for phenomenological models of orbital dynamics that are currently used to interpret experimental measurements of the time-dependent gravitational constant. We derive the field equations for the scalar-tensor perturbations and study their gauge freedom associated with the cosmological expansion. We find a new gauge eliminating a prohibitive number of gauge modes in the field equations and significantly simplifying…
A recent analysis of a Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) data record spanning 38.7 yr revealed an anomalous increase of the eccentricity of the lunar orbit amounting to de/dt_meas = (9 +/- 3) 10^-12 yr^-1. The present-day models of the dissipative phenomena occurring in the interiors of both the Earth and the Moon are not able to explain it. We examine several dynamical effects, not modeled in the data analysis, in the framework of long-range modified models of gravity and of the standard Newtonian/Einsteinian paradigm. It turns out that none of them can accommodate de/dt_meas. Many of them do not eve…
One of the outstanding problems of classical celestial mechanics was the restricted 3-body prob- lem, in which a planetoid of small mass is subject to the Newtonian attraction of two celestial bodies of large mass, as it occurs, for example, in the sun-earth-moon system. On the other hand, over the last decades, a systematic investigation of quantum corrections to the Newtonian potential has been carried out in the literature on quantum gravity. The present paper studies the effect of these tiny quantum corrections on the evaluation of equilibrium points. It is shown that, despite the extreme …
We derive the conservative secular evolution of precessing compact binaries to second post-Newtonian order accuracy, with leading-order spin-orbit, spin-spin and mass quadrupole-monopole contributions included. The emerging closed system of first-order differential equations evolves the pairs of polar and azimuthal angles of the spin and orbital angular momentum vectors together with the periastron angle. In contrast with the instantaneous dynamics, the secular dynamics is autonomous. This secular dynamics reliably characterizes the system over timescales starting from a few times the radial p…
In this article we investigate mathematically the variant of post-Newtonian mechanics using generalized fractional derivatives. The relativistic-covariant generalization of the classical equations for gravitational field is studied. The equations match to (i) the weak Newtonian limit on the moderate scales, (ii) deliver a potential higher, that Newtonian, on certain, large-distance characteristic scales. The perturbation of the gravitational field results in the tiny secular perihelion shift and exhibits some unusual effects on large scales. The general representation of the solution for fract…
We consider the recently estimated corrections Δ\dot\varpi to the Newtonian/Einsteinian secular precessions of the longitudes of perihelia \varpi of several planets of the Solar System in order to evaluate whether they are compatible with the predicted precessions due to models of long-range modified gravity put forth to account for certain features of the rotation curves of galaxies without resorting to dark matter. In particular, we consider a logarithmic-type correction and a f(R) inspired power-law modification of the Newtonian gravitational potential. The results obtained by taking the ra…
In this paper we revisit and extend a previous analysis where the possible relevance of quantum gravity effects in a cosmological setup was studied. The object of interest are non-local (logarithmic) terms generated in the effective action of gravity due to the exchange in loops of massless modes (such as photons or the gravitons themselves). We correct one mistake existing in the previous work and discuss the issue in a more general setting in different cosmological scenarios. We obtain the one-loop quantum-corrected evolution equations for the cosmological scale factor up to a given order in…
Conventional approaches to incorporating general relativistic effects into the dynamics of N-body systems containing central black holes, or of hierarchical triple systems with a relativistic inner binary, may not be adequate when the goal is to study the evolution of the system over a timescale related to relativistic secular effects, such as the precession of the pericenter. For such problems, it may necessary to include post-Newtonian "cross terms" in the equations of motion in order to capture relativistic effects consistently over the long timescales. Cross terms are post-Newtonian (PN) t…
We study the phenomenological consequences of amplitude-corrected post-Newtonian (PN) gravitational waveforms, as opposed to the more commonly used restricted PN waveforms, for the quasi-circular, adiabatic inspiral of compact binary objects. In the case of initial detectors it has been shown that the use of amplitude-corrected waveforms for detection templates would lead to significantly lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) than those suggested by simulations based exclusively on restricted waveforms. We further elucidate the origin of the effect by an in-depth analytic treatment. The discussi…
A Hamiltonian that approaches the study of the three-body problem in general relativity is obtained. We use it to study the relativistic version of the circular restricted three-body problem in which the first body is the heaviest and the third body is a test-particle. We focus on the orbits around the 3:2 resonance. We show that, in spite of the notable difference between the relativistic and Newtonian orbits, most of the resonant region is preserved. Nevertheless, differently from the Newtonian case, the frequencies between the second and the third body are no longer commensurable.
We analyze the secular evolution of hierarchical triple systems in the post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. We expand the Newtonian three-body equations of motion in powers of the ratio $a/A$, where $a$ and $A$ are the semimajor axis of the inner binary's orbit and of the orbit of the third body relative to the center of mass of the inner binary, respectively. The leading order "quadrupole" terms, of order $(a/A)^3$ relative to the $1/a^2$ acceleration within the inner binary, are responsible for the well-known Kozai-Lidov oscillations of orbital inclination and eccentricity. Th…
We revisit the problem of flux-balance equations for isolated post-Newtonian matter systems due to the emission of gravitational waves. In particular we show by a local derivation confined to the system, using the expression of radiation-reaction forces up to the 3.5PN order, that not only the energy, angular momentum and linear momentum of the system, but also the position of its center of mass, obey some (non-trivial) flux-balance equations. The balance equation for the center-of-mass position completes the description of the secular evolution by gravitational waves of relativistic post-Newt…
We discuss the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) limit of Horndeski's theory of gravity, also known under the name generalized G-inflation or $\text{G}^2$-inflation, which is the most general scalar-tensor theory of gravity with at most second order field equations in four dimensions. We derive conditions on the action for the validity of the post-Newtonian limit. For the most general class of theories consistent with these conditions we calculate the PPN parameters $γ(r)$ and $β(r)$, which in general depend on the interaction distance $r$ between the gravitating mass and the test mass. For a…
Continuing work initiated in an earlier publication [Yamada, Asada, Phys. Rev. D 82, 104019 (2010)], we investigate collinear solutions to the general relativistic three-body problem. We prove the uniqueness of the configuration for given system parameters (the masses and the end-to-end length). First, we show that the equation determining the distance ratio among the three masses, which has been obtained as a seventh-order polynomial in the previous paper, has at most three positive roots, which apparently provide three cases of the distance ratio. It is found, however, that, even for such ca…

In this paper we first calculate the post-Newtonian gravitoelectric secular rate of the mean anomaly of a test particle freely orbiting a spherically symmetric central mass. Then, we propose a novel approach to suitably combine the presently available planetary ranging data to Mercury, Venus and Mars in order to determine, simultaneously and independently of each other, the Sun's quadrupole mass moment J_2 and the secular advances of the perihelion and the mean anomaly. This would also allow to obtain the PPN parameters gamma and beta independently. We propose to analyze the time series of thr…
We discuss precessing compact binaries on eccentric orbit with gravastar, black hole, neutron star, or boson star components. We derive secular evolution equations to second post-Newtonian--order accuracy, with leading-order spin-orbit, spin-spin, and mass quadrupole-monopole contributions. The emerging closed system of first-order differential equations evolves the pairs of polar and azimuthal angles of the spin and orbital angular momentum vectors together with the periastron angle. The secular dynamics is autonomous. We confirm numerically, that secular evolutions look like smoothed-out ins…
We review and summarize our results concerning the influence of the spins of a compact binary system on the motion of the binary and on its gravitational reaction. We describe briefly our method which lead us to compute the secular changes in the post-Newtonian motion and the averaged radiative losses. Our description is valid to 1.5 post-Newtonian order. All spin-orbit and some spin-spin effects are considered which contribute at this accuracy. This approach enabled us to give both the evolutions of the constants of the nonradiative motion and of the relevant angular variables under radiation…
In this work the possibility of detecting the presence of a Yukawa term, as an additional contribution to the usual Newtonian gravitational potential, is introduced. The central idea is to analyze the effects at quantum level employing interference patterns (at this respect the present proposal resembles the Colella, Overhauser and Werner experiment), and deduce from it the possible effects that this Yukawa term could have. We will prove that the corresponding interference pattern depends on the phenomenological parameters that define this kind of terms. Afterwards, using the so called restric…
We construct analytic models of incompressible, rigidly rotating stars in PN gravity and study their stability against nonaxisymmetric Jacobi-like bar modes. PN configurations are modeled by homogeneous triaxial ellipsoids and the metric is obtained as a solution of Einstein's equations in 3+1 ADM form. We use an approximate subset of the equations well-suited to numerical integration for strong field, 3D configurations in quasi--equilibrium. These equations are exact at PN order, and admit an analytic solution for homogeneous ellipsoids. In this paper we present this solution, as well as anal…

The hierarchical three-body problem has many applications in relativistic astrophysics, and can play an important role in the formation of the binary black hole mergers detected by LIGO/Virgo. However, many studies have only included relativistic corrections responsible for the precession of pericenter of the inner and outer binaries, neglecting relativistic interactions between the three bodies. We revisit this problem and develop a fully consistent derivation of the secular three-body problem to first post-Newtonian order. We start with the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffman equations for a three-body …
We present numerical results on the hydrodynamic stability of coalescing binary stars in the first post Newtonian(1PN) approximation of general relativity. We pay particular attention to the hydrodynamical instability of corotating binary stars in equilibrium states assuming the stiff polytropic equation of state with the adiabatic constant $Γ=3$. In previous 1PN numerical studies on corotating binary stars in equilibrium states, it was found that along the sequence of binary stars as a function of the orbital separation, they have the energy and/or angular momentum minima where the secular in…
We preliminarily investigate the impact of the Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) and of the asteroid ring on some proposed high-precision tests of Newtonian and post-Newtonian gravity to be performed in the Solar System by means of spacecraft in heliocentric \approx 1 AU orbits and accurate orbit determination of some of the inner planets. It turns out that the Classical KBOSs (CKBOS), which amount to \approx 70% of the observed population of Trans-Neptunian bodies, induce a systematic secular error of about 1 m after one year in the transverse direction T of the orbit of a test particle orbiting at …

The orbital motion is derived for a non-spinning test-mass in the relativistic, gravitational field of a rotationally deformed body not restricted to the equatorial plane or spherical orbit. The gravitational field of the central body is represented by the Kerr metric, expanded to second post-Newtonian order including the linear and quadratic spin terms. The orbital period, the intrinsic periastron advance, and the precession of the orbital plane are derived with the aid of novel canonical variables and action-based methods.
The signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) for quasi-circular binary black hole inspirals computed from restricted post-Newtonian waveforms are compared with those attained by more complete post-Newtonian signals, which are superpositions of amplitude-corrected harmonics of the orbital phase. It is shown that if one were to use the best available amplitude-corrected waveforms for detection templates, one should expect SNRs in actual searches to be significantly lower than those suggested by simulations based purely on restricted waveforms.
