A generalization of the Hopf-Cole transformation and its relation to the Burgers equation of integer order and the diffusion equation with quadratic nonlinearity are discussed. The explicit form of a particular analytical solution is presented. The existence of the travelling wave solution and the interaction of nonlocal perturbation are considered. The nonlocal generalizations of the one-dimensional diffusion equation with quadratic nonlinearity and of the Burgers equation are analyzed.
In this paper we focus on a spatially extended FitzHugh-Nagumo model with interactions. In the regime where strong and local interactions dominate, we quantify how the probability density of neurons concentrates into a Dirac distribution. Previous work investigating this question have provided relative bounds in integrability spaces. Using a Hopf-Cole framework, we derive precise $L^\infty$ estimates using subtle explicit sub- and super- solutions which prove, with rates of convergence, that the blow up profile is Gaussian.
In this note we propose a transformation which decouples stationary Mean Field Games systems with superlinear Hamiltonians of the form |p|^r, and turns the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation into a quasi-linear equation involving the r-Laplace operator. Such a transformation requires an assumption on solutions of the system, which is satisfied for example in space dimension one or if solutions are radial.
We study generalized Hopf-Cole transformations motivated by the Schrödinger bridge problem, which can be seen as a boundary value Hamiltonian system on the Wasserstein space. We prove that generalized Hopf-Cole transformations are symplectic submersions in the Wasserstein symplectic geometry. Many examples, including a Hopf-Cole transformation for the shallow water equations, are given. Based on this transformation, energy splitting inequalities are provided.
A rigorous equation is stated and it is shown that the spatial derivative of the Cole-Hopf solution of the KPZ equation is a solution of this equation. The method of proof used to show that a process solves this equation is based on rather weak estimates so that this method has the advantage that it could be used to verify solutions of other highly singular SPDEs, too.
Operator representation of Cole-Hopf transform is obtained based on the logarithmic representation of infinitesimal generators. For this purpose the relativistic formulation of abstract evolution equation is introduced. Even independent of the spatial dimension, the Cole-Hopf transform is generalized to a transform between linear and nonlinear equations defined in Banach spaces. In conclusion a role of transform between the evolution operator and its infinitesimal generator is understood in the context of generating nonlinear semigroup.
This paper is concerned with the diffusion limit (as $\va\rightarrow 0$) of radial solutions to a chemotaxis system with logarithmic singular sensitivity in a bounded interval with mixed Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. We use a Cole-Hopf type transformation to resolve the logarithmic singularity and prove that the solution of the transformed system has a boundary-layer profile as $\va \to 0$, where the boundary layer thickness is of $\mathcal{O}(\va^α)$ with $0<α<\frac{1}{2}$. By transferring the results back to the original chemotaxis model via Cole-Hopf transformation, we find that …
This paper is concerned with the well-posedness and large-time behavior of a two dimensional PDE-ODE hybrid chemotaxis system describing the initiation of tumor angiogenesis. We first transform the system via a Cole-Hopf type transformation into a parabolic-hyperbolic system and show that the solution of the transformed system converges to a constant equilibrium state as time tends to infinity. Finally we reverse the Cole-Hopf transformation and obtain the relevant results for the pre-transformed PDE-ODE hybrid system. In contrast to the existing related results, where continuous initial datum…
We show that the 1d viscous Burgers equation considered for complex valued functions develops finite-time singularities from compactly supported smooth data. By means of the Cole-Hopf transformation, the singularities of the solutions are related to zeros of complex-valued solutions of the heat equation. We prove that such zeros are isolated if they are not present in the initial data.
Miura transform is known as the transformation between Korteweg de-Vries equation and modified Korteweg de-Vries equation. Its formal similarity to the Cole-Hopf transform has been noticed. This fact sheds light on the logarithmic type transformations as an origin of certain kind of nonlinearity in the soliton equations. In this article, based on the logarithmic representation of operators in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, a structure common to both Miura and Cole-Hopf transforms is discussed. In conclusion, the Miura transform is generalized as the transform in abstract Banach spaces, an…
We introduce a new concept of solution to the KPZ equation which is shown to extend the classical Cole-Hopf solution. This notion provides a factorisation of the Cole-Hopf solution map into a "universal" measurable map from the probability space into an explicitly described auxiliary metric space, composed with a new solution map that has very good continuity properties. The advantage of such a formulation is that it essentially provides a pathwise notion of a solution, together with a very detailed approximation theory. In particular, our construction completely bypasses the Cole-Hopf transfo…
We give examples of small data blow-up for a three-component system of quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger equations in one space dimension. Our construction of the blowing-up solution is based on the Hopf-Cole transformation, which allows us to reduce the problem to getting suitable growth estimates for a solution to the transformed system. Amplification in the reduced system is shown to have a close connection with the mass resonance.
We use the Cole--Hopf transformation and the Laplace method for the heat equation to justify the numerical results on enstrophy growth in the viscous Burgers equation on the unit circle. We show that the maximum enstrophy achieved in the time evolution is scaled as $\mathcal{E}^{3/2}$, where $\mathcal{E}$ is the large initial enstrophy, whereas the time needed for reaching the maximal enstrophy is scaled as $\mathcal{E}^{-1/2}$. These bounds are sharp for sufficiently smooth initial conditions.
We study existence and regularity properties of stable positive solutions to the nonvariational problem - Delta u - b(x)|nabla u|^2 = lambda g(u) in a bounded smooth domain. In the case where b is constant, by means of a Hopf-Cole transformation, the problem can be taken to a variational form, for which there are classical results of Crandall-Rabinowitz, Mignot-Puel and Brezis-Vazquez. In this paper we obtain results for a general bounded function b=b(x) which coincide with the classical ones in the constant b case.
This work introduces a pathwise notion of solution for the stochastic Burgers equation, in particular, our approach encompasses the Cole-Hopf solution. The developments are based on regularization arguments from the theory of distributions.
We study radial solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation $Δu+f(u)=0$ under rather general growth conditions on $f$. We construct a radial singular solution and study the intersection number between the singular solution and a regular solution. An application to bifurcation problems of elliptic Dirichlet problems is given. To this end, we derive a certain limit equation from the original equation at infinity, using a generalized similarity transformation. Through a generalized Cole-Hopf transformation, all the limit equations can be reduced into two typical cases, i.e., $Δu+u^p=0$ and $Δu+…
We study in the present article the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation $$ \partial_t h(t,x)=νΔh(t,x)+λ|\nabla h(t,x)|^2 +\sqrt{D}\, η(t,x), \qquad (t,x)\in\mathbb{R}_+\times\mathbb{R}^d $$ in $d\ge 3$ dimensions in the perturbative regime, i.e. for $λ>0$ small enough and a smooth, bounded, integrable initial condition $h_0=h(t=0,\cdot)$. The forcing term $η$ in the right-hand side is a regularized space-time white noise. The exponential of $h$ -- its so-called Cole-Hopf transform -- is known to satisfy a linear PDE with multiplicative noise. We prove a large-scale diffusive limit for the solut…
This paper is devoted to studying the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations with distribution-valued coefficients, which is not well-defined in the classical sense and shall be understood by using paracontrolled distribution method introduced in \cite{GIP15}. By a new characterization of weighted Hölder space and Zvonkin's transformation we prove some new a priori estimates, and therefore, establish the global well-posedness for singular HJB equations. As an application, the global well-posedness for KPZ equations on the real line in polynomial weighted Hölder spaces is obtained without using Cole…
The solution of the problem on reduction operators and nonclassical reductions of the Burgers equation is systematically treated and completed. A new proof of the theorem on the special "no-go" case of regular reduction operators is presented, and the representation of the coefficients of operators in terms of solutions of the initial equation is constructed for this case. All possible nonclassical reductions of the Burgers equation to single ordinary differential equations are exhaustively described. Any Lie reduction of the Burgers equation proves to be equivalent via the Hopf-Cole transform…
