The hedgehog ansatz for spherically symmetric spacetimes in self-gravitating nonlinear sigma models and Skyrme models is revisited and its generalization for non-spherically symmetric spacetimes is proposed. The key idea behind our construction is that, even if the matter fields depend on the Killing coordinates in a nontrivial way, the corresponding energy-momentum tensor can still be compatible with spacetime symmetries. Our generalized hedgehog ansatz reduces the Skyrme equations to coupled differential equations for two scalar fields together with several constraint equations between them. Some particular field configurations satisfying those constraints are presented in several physically important spacetimes, including stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes. Incidentally, several new exact solutions are obtained under the standard hedgehog ansatz, one of which represents a global monopole inside a black hole with the Skyrme effect.
Axially symmetric gravitating multi-skyrmion configurations are obtained using the harmonic map ansatz introduced in [1]. In particular, the effect of gravity on the energy and baryon densities of the SU(3) non-gravitating multi-skyrmion configurations is studied in detail.
We investigate self-gravitating rotating solutions in the Einstein-Skyrme theory. These solutions are globally regular and asymptotically flat. We present a new kind of solutions with zero baryon number, which possess neither a flat limit nor a static limit.
We investigate the existence of the skyrmion field in the background of an asymptotically flat stationary reflecting star. For this purpose, we consider the Einstein Skyrme system for which there is a skyrmion hair in the black hole case. We discuss spherically symmetric skyrmions and employ the hedgehog ansatz for the skyrmion field. We show that, in contrast to the black hole there is no skyrmion hair for a reflecting star.
A discussion of the stability of self gravitating Skyrmions, with a large winding number N, in a Schwarzschild type of metric, is presented for the case where an isospin chemical potential is introduced. It turns out that the chemical potential stabilizes the behavior of the Skyrmion discussed previously in the literature. This analysis is carried on in the framework of a variational approach using different ansaetze for the radial profile of the Skyrmion. We found a divergent behavior for the size of the Skyrmion, associated to a certain critical value $μ_c$ of the chemical potential. At this…
We construct globally regular gravitating Skyrmions, which possess only discrete symmetries. In particular, we present tetrahedral and cubic Skyrmions. The SU(2) Skyrme field is parametrized by an improved harmonic map ansatz. Consistency then requires also a restricted ansatz for the metric. The numerical solutions obtained within this approximation are compared to those obtained in dilaton gravity.
We show that the minimally gauged BPS baby Skyrme model remains a BPS theory after coupling with gravity that is the topologically nontrivial configurations called baby Skyrmions carrying magnetic flux are solutions to a zero pressure equation. Following that the proper mass, magnetic flux and the proper geometric volume are linear function of the topological charge, while the total ADM mass and geometric radius get a contribution due to the gravitational interaction which is quadratic in the topological charge. All these quantities are found exactly as target space integrals (averages) of the…
In this paper, we study the quantum corrected thermodynamics of a class of black holes generated by self-gravitating Skyrmion models. One such black hole solution is Einstein-Skrymion black hole. We first compute the ADM mass of Einstein-Skyrmion black hole using on-shell Hamiltonian formalism present already in the literature. We then consider non-extended phase space thermodynamics and derive expressions for various thermodynamic quantities like the Hawking temperature, entropy, pressure, Gibbs free energy, and heat capacity. Next, we study the effect of quantum corrections on the thermodyna…
We study the dynamics of spherically symmetric solutions in the Einstein Skyrme model. We focus our attention on generic long time evolution of initial data resulting in the formation of the B = 1 soliton, which plays the role of an attractor. We demonstrate that similarly to the case of flat space evolution, the relaxation to the regular soliton (which we will call Skyrmion) is universal and may be treated as a superposition of two effects quasinormal oscillations responsible for intermediate asymptotics and a power-law tail describing the behavior of the system at very long times. We determi…
We present a self-gravitating, analytic and globally regular Skyrmion solution of the Einstein-Skyrme system with winding number w = 1, in presence of a cosmological constant. The static spacetime metric is the direct product RxS3 and the Skyrmion is the self-gravitating generalization of the static hedgehog solution of Manton and Ruback with unit topological charge. This solution can be promoted to a dynamical one in which the spacetime is a cosmology of the Bianchi type-IX with time-dependent scale and squashing coefficients. Remarkably, the Skyrme equations are still identically satisfied f…
We consider the long-time behaviour of spherically symmetric solutions in the Einstein-Skyrme model. Using nonlinear perturbation analysis we obtain the leading order estimation of the tail in the topologically trivial sector (B = 0) of the model. We show that solutions starting from small compactly supported initial data decay as 1/t^4 at future timelike infinity and as 1/u^2 at future null infinity. We also verified that long-time behaviour for the tail in Einstein-Skyrme model is exactly the same as it was obtained for wave maps.
We construct the first analytic self-gravitating Skyrmions with higher Baryon charge in four dimensions for the $SU(3)$-Skyrme-Einstein-$Λ$ theory by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the approach developed by Balachandran et al. to describe the first (numerical) example of a non-embedded solution. These are genuine $SU(3)$ analytic solutions instead of trivial embeddings of $SU(2)$ into $SU(3)$ and its geometry is that of a Bianchi IX Universe. The Skyrme ansatz is chosen in such a way that the Skyrme field equations are identically satisfied in the sector with Baryon charge 4. T…
We derive the non-relativistic limit of a massive vector field. We show that the Cartesian spatial components of the vector behave as three identical, non-interacting scalar fields. We find classes of spherical, cylindrical, and planar self-gravitating vector solitons in the Newtonian limit. The gravitational properties of the lowest-energy vector solitons$\mathrm{-}$the gravitational potential and density field$\mathrm{-}$depend only on the net mass of the soliton and the vector particle mass. In particular, these self-gravitating, ground-state vector solitons are independent of the distribut…
A modification of the hedgehog ansatz has recently led to novel exact black hole solutions with selfgravitating SU(2) Skyrme fields. Considering a negative cosmological constant the black holes are not asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) but rather asymptote to an AdS version of Barriola--Vilenkin spacetime. We examine the thermodynamics of the system interpreting the cosmological constant as a bulk pressure. We use the standard counterterm method to obtain a finite Euclidean action. For a given coupling of the matter action, the system behaves as does a charged AdS black hole in the fixed cha…
We investigate the existence of non axisymmetric solutions in the 6-dimensional baby-Skyrme brane model. The brane is described by a localized solution to the baby-Skyrme model extending in the extra dimensions. Such non symmetric branes have already been constructed in the original 2+1-dimensional baby-Skyrme model in flat space. We generalize this result to the case of gravitating baby-Skyrme and in the context of extradimensions. These non-trivial deformation from the axisymmetric shape appear for higher values of the topological charge, so we consider the cases of $B=3,4$, where $B$ is the…
We construct meronic black holes and solitons in the Einstein $SU(N)$-Yang-Mills theory in $D=4$ and $D=5$ dimensions. These analytical solutions are found by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the Euler parameterization of the $SU(N)$ group from which the Yang-Mills equations are automatically satisfied for all values of $N$ while the Einstein equations can be solved analytically. We explicitly show the role that the color number $N$ plays in the black hole thermodynamics as well as in the gravitational spin from isospin effect. Two remarkable results of our analysis are that, fir…
Multidimensional configurations with Minkowski external space-time and a spherical global monopole in extra dimensions are discussed in the context of the brane world concept. The monopole is formed with a hedgehog-like set of scalar fields ϕ^i with a symmetry-breaking potential V depending on the magnitude ϕ^2 = ϕ^i ϕ^i. All possible kinds of globally regular configurations are singled out without specifying the shape of V(ϕ). These variants are governed by the maximum value ϕ_m of the scalar field, characterizing the energy scale of symmetry breaking. If ϕ_m < ϕ_cr (where ϕ_cr is a critical …
We present a review of gravitating particle-like and black hole solutions with non-Abelian gauge fields. The emphasis is given to the description of the structure of the solutions and to the connection with the results of flat space soliton physics. We describe the Bartnik-McKinnon solitons and the non-Abelian black holes arising in the Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, and their various generalizations. These include axially symmetric and slowly rotating configurations, solutions with higher gauge groups, $Λ$-term, dilaton, and higher curvature corrections. The stability issue is discussed as well.…
We consider a class of generalizations of the Skyrme model to five spacetime dimensions ($d=5$), which is defined in terms of an $O(5)$ sigma model. A special ansatz for the Skyrme field allows angular momentum to be present and equations of motion with a radial dependence only. Using it, we obtain: 1) everywhere regular solutions describing localised energy lumps (Skyrmions); 2) Self-gravitating, asymptotically flat, everywhere non-singular solitonic solutions (Skyrme stars), upon minimally coupling the model to Einstein's gravity; 3) both static and spinning black holes with Skyrme hair, the…
We study solutions of the Einstein-Skyrme model. Firstly we consider test field Skyrmions on the Kerr background. These configurations -- hereafter dubbed Skerrmions -- can be in equilibrium with a Kerr black hole (BH) by virtue of a synchronisation condition. We consider two sectors for Skerrmions. In the sector with non-zero baryon charge, Skerrmions are akin to the known Skyrme solutions on the Schwarzschild background. These `topological' configurations reduce to flat spacetime Skyrmions in a vanishing BH mass limit; moreoever, they never become "small" perturbations on the Kerr background…
The dynamics of the most general Bianchi IX cosmology with three time dependent scale factors for the Einstein-Skyrme system is analyzed. For the Skyrmion, a generalized hedgehog ansatz with unit baryon charge is introduced. The most remarkable feature of this ansatz is that, in the above topologically non-trivial sector with unit topological charge, the Skyrme field equations are identically satisfied on any Bianchi IX metric. We will show that due to this feature the complete set of coupled Einstein-Skyrme field equations can be deduced from a suitable minisuperspace Lagrangian. The latter a…
Time-dependent analytic solutions of the Einstein-Skyrme system --gravitating Skyrmions--, with topological charge one are analyzed in detail. In particular, the question of whether these Skyrmions reach a spherically symmetric configuration for $t\rightarrow+\infty$ is discussed. It is shown that there is a static, spherically symmetric solution described by the Ermakov-Pinney system, which is fully integrable by algebraic methods. For $Λ>0$ this spherically symmetric solution is found to be in a "neutral equilibrium" under small deformations, in the sense that under a small squashing it woul…
The BPS Skyrme model has been demonstrated already to provide a physically intriguing and quantitatively reliable description of nuclear matter. Indeed, the model has both the symmetries and the energy-momentum tensor of a perfect fluid, and thus represents a field theoretic realization of the "liquid droplet" model of nuclear matter. In addition, the classical soliton solutions together with some obvious corrections (spin-isospin quantization, Coulomb energy, proton-neutron mass difference) provide an accurate modeling of nuclear binding energies for heavier nuclei. These results lead to the …
In this work, taking advantage of the Generalized Hedgehog Ansatz, we construct new self-gravitating solitons in a cavity with mirror-like boundary conditions for the SU(2) Non-linear Sigma Model and Skyrme model. For spherically symmetric spacetimes, we are able to reduce the system to three independent equations that are numerically integrated. There are two branches of well-behaved solutions. The first branch is defined for arbitrary values of the Skyrme coupling and therefore also leads to a gravitating soliton in the Non-linear Sigma Model, while the second branch exists only for non-vani…
We study the effect of gravity on stability of an electron living on the 3-brane. Our recently proposed fermion self-energy model is augmented by the energy of self-gravitating electron. This energy is evaluated using the gravitational field of a spherical source on the 3-brane derived by Garriga and Tanaka. Owing to the smallness of the electron radius, the short-range correction to this field dominates the Newtonian gravitational field of the electron. The magnitude of the short-range correction is proportional to the square of the curvature radius, $ l $, of the anti-de Sitter space. On inc…
