Image denoising is one of the fundamental problems in image processing. In this paper, a novel approach to suppress noise from the image is conducted by applying the interquartile range (IQR) which is one of the statistical methods used to detect outlier effect from a dataset. A window of size kXk was implemented to support IQR filter. Each pixel outside the IQR range of the kXk window is treated as noisy pixel. The estimation of the noisy pixels was obtained by local averaging. The essential advantage of applying IQR filter is to preserve edge sharpness better of the original image. A variety of test images have been used to support the proposed filter and PSNR was calculated and compared with median filter. The experimental results on standard test images demonstrate this filter is simpler and better performing than median filter.
Most of the classical denoising methods restore clear results by selecting and averaging pixels in the noisy input. Instead of relying on hand-crafted selecting and averaging strategies, we propose to explicitly learn this process with deep neural networks. Specifically, we propose deformable 2D kernels for image denoising where the sampling locations and kernel weights are both learned. The proposed kernel naturally adapts to image structures and could effectively reduce the oversmoothing artifacts. Furthermore, we develop 3D deformable kernels for video denoising to more efficiently sample p…
The bilateral filter is a useful nonlinear filter which without smoothing edges, it does spatial averaging. In the literature, the effectiveness of this method for image denoising is shown. In this paper, an extension of this method is proposed which is based on complex wavelet transform. In fact, the bilateral filtering is applied to the low-frequency (approximation) subbands of the decomposed image using complex wavelet transform, while the thresholding approach is applied to the high frequency subbands. Using the bilateral filter in the complex wavelet domain forms a new image denoising fra…

In this paper, we propose a method for denoising diffusion-weighted images (DWI) of the brain using a convolutional neural network trained on realistic, synthetic MR data. We compare our results to averaging of repeated scans, a widespread method used in clinics to improve signal-to-noise ratio of MR images. To obtain training data for transfer learning, we model, in a data-driven fashion, the effects of echo-planar imaging (EPI): Nyquist ghosting and ramp sampling. We introduce these effects to the digital phantom of brain anatomy (BrainWeb). Instead of simulating pseudo-random noise with a d…
Background and Objective: The contrast of cryo-EM images varies from one to another, primarily due to the uneven thickness of the ice layer. This contrast variation can affect the quality of 2-D class averaging, 3-D ab-initio modeling, and 3-D heterogeneity analysis. Contrast estimation is currently performed during 3-D iterative refinement. As a result, the estimates are not available at the earlier computational stages of class averaging and ab-initio modeling. This paper aims to solve the contrast estimation problem directly from the picked particle images in the ab-initio stage, without es…

Existing denoising methods typically restore clear results by aggregating pixels from the noisy input. Instead of relying on hand-crafted aggregation schemes, we propose to explicitly learn this process with deep neural networks. We present a spatial pixel aggregation network and learn the pixel sampling and averaging strategies for image denoising. The proposed model naturally adapts to image structures and can effectively improve the denoised results. Furthermore, we develop a spatio-temporal pixel aggregation network for video denoising to efficiently sample pixels across the spatio-tempora…

The problem of image restoration in cryo-EM entails correcting for the effects of the Contrast Transfer Function (CTF) and noise. Popular methods for image restoration include `phase flipping', which corrects only for the Fourier phases but not amplitudes, and Wiener filtering, which requires the spectral signal to noise ratio. We propose a new image restoration method which we call `Covariance Wiener Filtering' (CWF). In CWF, the covariance matrix of the projection images is used within the classical Wiener filtering framework for solving the image restoration deconvolution problem. Our estim…
In recent years, the supervised learning strategy for real noisy image denoising has been emerging and has achieved promising results. In contrast, realistic noise removal for raw noisy videos is rarely studied due to the lack of noisy-clean pairs for dynamic scenes. Clean video frames for dynamic scenes cannot be captured with a long-exposure shutter or averaging multi-shots as was done for static images. In this paper, we solve this problem by creating motions for controllable objects, such as toys, and capturing each static moment for multiple times to generate clean video frames. In this w…

In video denoising, the adjacent frames often provide very useful information, but accurate alignment is needed before such information can be harnassed. In this work, we present a multi-alignment network, which generates multiple flow proposals followed by attention-based averaging. It serves to mimic the non-local mechanism, suppressing noise by averaging multiple observations. Our approach can be applied to various state-of-the-art models that are based on flow estimation. Experiments on a large-scale video dataset demonstrate that our method improves the denoising baseline model by 0.2dB, …
There have been many discriminative learning methods using convolutional neural networks (CNN) for several image restoration problems, which learn the mapping function from a degraded input to the clean output. In this letter, we propose a self-committee method that can find enhanced restoration results from the multiple trial of a trained CNN with different but related inputs. Specifically, it is noted that the CNN sometimes finds different mapping functions when the input is transformed by a reversible transform and thus produces different but related outputs with the original. Hence averagi…
In Non-Local Means (NLM), each pixel is denoised by performing a weighted averaging of its neighboring pixels, where the weights are computed using image patches. We demonstrate that the denoising performance of NLM can be improved by pruning the neighboring pixels, namely, by rejecting neighboring pixels whose weights are below a certain threshold $λ$. While pruning can potentially reduce pixel averaging in uniform-intensity regions, we demonstrate that there is generally an overall improvement in the denoising performance. In particular, the improvement comes from pixels situated close to ed…

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-resolution and non-invasive 3D imaging of the human retina but is inherently impaired by speckle noise. This paper introduces a spatio-temporal denoising algorithm for OCT data on a B-scan level using a novel quantile sparse image (QuaSI) prior. To remove speckle noise while preserving image structures of diagnostic relevance, we implement our QuaSI prior via median filter regularization coupled with a Huber data fidelity model in a variational approach. For efficient energy minimization, we develop an alternating direction method of multipliers …

This technical report briefly introduces to the D$^{3}$Net proposed by our team "TUK-IKLAB" for Atmospheric Turbulence Mitigation in $UG2^{+}$ Challenge at CVPR 2022. In the light of test and validation results on textual images to improve text recognition performance and hot-air balloon images for image enhancement, we can say that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, we also provide a visual comparison with publicly available denoising, deblurring, and frame averaging methods with respect to the proposed work. The proposed method ranked 2nd on the final lea…
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is pervasive in both the research and clinical practice of Ophthalmology. However, OCT images are strongly corrupted by noise, limiting their interpretation. Current OCT denoisers leverage assumptions on noise distributions or generate targets for training deep supervised denoisers via averaging of repeat acquisitions. However, recent self-supervised advances allow the training of deep denoising networks using only repeat acquisitions without clean targets as ground truth, reducing the burden of supervised learning. Despite the clear advantages of self-superv…
Fluorescence microscopy has enabled a dramatic development in modern biology. Due to its inherently weak signal, fluorescence microscopy is not only much noisier than photography, but also presented with Poisson-Gaussian noise where Poisson noise, or shot noise, is the dominating noise source. To get clean fluorescence microscopy images, it is highly desirable to have effective denoising algorithms and datasets that are specifically designed to denoise fluorescence microscopy images. While such algorithms exist, no such datasets are available. In this paper, we fill this gap by constructing a …
