We have investigated the coherent phase control on the (3p^{2}) autoionizing state (AIS) resonantly coupled with the ground state for Mg through a two- and a four-photon transition simultaneously, using a bichromatic linearly polarized laser field. The frequency is chosen such that the lasers are tunable around resonance with the transition
(3s^{2}(^{1}S^e)\rightarrow 3p^{2}(^{1}S^e)), which implies (ω_{f}=2.11) eV and (ω_{h}=4.22) eV. We are interested in the modification of autoionizing (AI) line shape through the relative phase and laser intensities. A strong phase dependence on the total ionization yield and ionization rate is found. We also performed a time-dependent calculation which takes into consideration all the resonant states of the process.

We investigate the coherent control of the photo\-electron angular distribution in bichromatic atomic ionization. Neon is selected as target since it is one of the most popular systems in current gas-phase experiments with free-electron lasers (FELSs). In particular, we tackle practical questions, such as the role of the fine-structure splitting, the pulse length, and the intensity. Time-dependent and stationary perturbation theory are employed, and we also solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in a single-active electron model. We consider neon ionized by a FEL pulse whose fundamental…
We study double ionization of Mg by electron impact through the vantage point of classical mechanics. We consider all electron-electron correlations in a Coulomb four-body problem, where three electrons belong to the atom and the fourth electron causes the impact ionization. From our model we compute the double-ionization probability of Mg for impact energies from 15, to 125 eV. Double ionization occurs through eight double-ionization mechanisms, which we classify into four categories: inner shell capture, direct, delay and ionized inner shell mechanisms. We show that delay and ionized inner s…
Calculations for electron-impact ionization of magnesium and calcium atoms in the method of interacting configurations in the complex number representation
Angular distribution of photoelectrons released by the ionization of randomly-oriented molecules with two laser fields of carrier frequencies $ω$ and $2ω$, which are linearly polarized in two mutually-orthogonal directions, is analyzed in the perturbation limit for the case of one- vs two-photon ionization process. In particular, we focus on the recently predicted [Ph.V. Demekhin {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{121}, 253201 (2018)] forward-backward asymmetry in the photoelectron emission, which is induced by the interference of two fields and depends on the external relative phase betwe…
Absolute rate coefficients for photorecombination and electron-impact ionization of magnesium-like iron ions from measurements at a heavy-ion storage ring
The coherent control of electron beams and ultrafast electron wave packets dynamics have attracted significant attention in electron microscopy as well as in atomic physics. In order to unify the conceptual pictures developed in both fields, we demonstrate the generation and manipulation of tailored electron orbital angular momentum (OAM) superposition states either by employing customized holographic diffraction masks in a transmission electron microscope or by atomic multiphoton ionization utilizing pulse-shaper generated carrier-envelope phase stable bichromatic ultrashort laser pulses. Bot…
Atoms exposed to high-frequency strong laser fields experience the ionization suppression due to the deformation of Kramers-Henneberger (KH) wave functions, which has not been confirmed yet in experiment. We propose a bichromatic pump-probe strategy to affirm the existence of KH states, which is formed by the pump pulse and ionized by the probe pulse. In the case of the single-photon ionization triggered by a vacuum ultra-violet probe pulse, the double-slit structure of KH atom is mapped to the photoelectron momentum distribution. In the case of the tunneling ionization induced by an infrared …
Photoelectron angular distributions of the two-photon ionization of neutral atoms are theoretically investigated. Numerical calculations of two-photon ionization cross sections and asymmetry parameters are carried out within the independent-particle approximation and relativistic second-order perturbation theory. The dependence of the asymmetry parameters on the polarization and energy of the incident light as well as on the angular momentum properties of the ionized electron are investigated. While dynamic variations of the angular distributions at photon energies near intermediate level reso…
Bichromatic extreme-ultraviolet pulses from a seeded free-electron laser enable us to measure photoelectron angular distribution (PAD) as a function of the relative phase between the different wavelength components. The time-dependent multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (TD-MCSCF) methods are powerful multielectron computation methods to accurately simulate such photoionization dynamics from the first principles. Here we propose a method to evaluate the amplitude and phase of each ionization path, which completely determines the photoionization processes, using TD-MCSCF simulation results…
Photoionization of an atom $A$ by a strong laser field in the presence of a spatially well-separated neighboring atom $B$ is considered. The laser field frequency is assumed to lie below the ionization potential of atom $A$ and be resonant with a dipole-allowed transition in atom $B$. In this situation, the ionization may occur either directly by multiphoton absorption from the laser field at the first atomic center. Or via an indirect pathway involving two-center electron-electron correlations, where the neighbor atom $B$ is first photoexcited and, afterwards, transfers its energy upon deexci…
We investigate photoelectron holography in bichromatic linearly polarized fields of commensurate frequencies $rω$ and $sω$, with emphasis on the existing symmetries and for which values of the relative phase between the two driving waves they are kept or broken. Using group-theoretical methods, we show that, additionally to the well-known half-cycle symmetry, which is broken for $r+s$ odd, there are reflection symmetries around the field zero crossings and maxima, which may or may not be kept, depending on how both waves are dephased. The three symmetries are always present for monochromatic f…

Measuring and controlling the ionization dynamics by intense laser fields has recently led to important breakthroughs, from the investigation of tunneling time delays to attosecond molecular imaging by electron holography. In these experiments, extracting the subtle influence of the ionic potential on the departing electrons is of capital importance, and often challenging. Here we show that molecular chirality naturally provides a solution to this issue by breaking the symmetry of the photoionization process along the laser propagation direction. Using counter-rotating bicircular bichromatic l…
We investigate the process of phase-controlled high-order above-threshold photoemission from sharp metallic nanotips under bichromatic laser fields. Experimental photoelectron spectra resulting from two-color excitation with a moderately intense near-infrared fundamental field (1560 nm) and its weak second harmonic show a strong sensitivity on the relative phase and clear indications for a plateau-like structure that is attributed to elastic backscattering. To explore the relevant control mechanisms, characteristic features, and particular signatures from near-field inhomogeneity, we performed…
We demonstrate coherent control over the photoelectron circular dichroism in randomly oriented chiral molecules, based on quantum interference between multiple photoionization pathways. To significantly enhance the chiral signature, we use a finite manifold of indistinguishable $(1+1^\prime)$ REMPI pathways interfering at a common photoelectron energy but probing different intermediate states. We show that this coherent control mechanism maximizes the number of molecular states that constructively contribute to the dichroism at an optimal photoelectron energy and thus outperforms other schemes…
We present numerical simulations of ultrafast multiphoton ionization dynamics in a two-dimensional atomic model driven by co- and counterrotating circularly polarized single-color and bichromatic carrier envelope phase (CEP) stable ultrashort laser pulse sequences. Taking into account phase variations due to CEP fluctuations and the Gouy phase, our results accurately reproduce recently measured photoelectron momentum distributions [Pengel et al., Phys. Rev.
