Approximate dynamic programming has been investigated and used as a method to approximately solve optimal regulation problems. However, the extension of this technique to optimal tracking problems for continuous time nonlinear systems has remained a non-trivial open problem. The control development in this paper guarantees ultimately bounded tracking of a desired trajectory, while also ensuring that the controller converges to an approximate optimal policy.
In Model Predictive Control (MPC) formulations of trajectory tracking problems, infeasible reference trajectories and a-priori unknown constraints can lead to cumbersome designs, aggressive tracking, and loss of recursive feasibility. This is the case, for example, in trajectory tracking applications for mobile systems in the presence of constraints which are not fully known a-priori. In this paper, we propose a new framework called Model Predictive Flexible trajectory Tracking Control (MPFTC), which relaxes the trajectory tracking requirement. Additionally, we accommodate recursive feasibilit…
Most passivity based trajectory tracking algorithms for mechanical systems can only stabilise reference trajectories that have constant energy. This paper overcomes this limitation by deriving a single variable Hamiltonian model for the reference trajectory and solving along the constrained trajectory to obtain a reference potential. This potential is then used as the model to shape the energy of the true system such that its free solutions include the desired reference trajectory. The proposed trajectory tracking algorithm interconnects the reference and true systems through a virtual spring …
In this paper, we present a systematic approach for high-performance and efficient trajectory tracking control of autonomous wheel loaders. With the nonlinear dynamic model of a wheel loader, nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) is used in offline trajectory planning to obtain a high-performance state-control trajectory while satisfying the state and control constraints. In tracking control, the nonlinear model is embedded into a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) model and the LPV-MPC strategy is used to achieve fast online computation and good tracking performance. To demonstrate the effecti…

This paper proposes a new robust trajectory tracking error-based control approach for unmanned ground vehicles. A trajectory tracking error-based model is used to design a linear model predictive controller and its control action is combined with feedforward and robust control actions. The experimental results show that the proposed control structure is capable to let a tractor-trailer system track both linear and curvilinear target trajectories with low tracking error.
This paper presents a control method and trajectory planner for vehicles with first-order nonholonomic constraints that guarantee asymptotic convergence to a time-indexed trajectory. To overcome the nonholonomic constraint, a fixed point in front of the vehicle can be controlled to track a desired trajectory, albeit with a steady-state error. To eliminate steady state error, a sufficiently smooth trajectory is reformulated for the new reference point such that, when tracking the new trajectory, the vehicle asymptotically converges to the original trajectory. The resulting zero-error tracking l…
This paper studies the fish growth trajectory tracking via reinforcement learning under a representative bioenergetic growth model. Due to the complex aquaculture condition and uncertain environmental factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, un-ionized ammonia, and strong nonlinear couplings, including multi-inputs of the fish growth model, the growth trajectory tracking problem can not be efficiently solved by the model-based control approaches in precision aquaculture. To this purpose, we formulate the growth trajectory tracking problem as sampled-data optimal control using discrete st…
This paper studies the tracking control problem for nonholonomic mobile robots based on second order dynamics, with application to consensus tracking and formation tracking. The greatest novelty in this paper is that the reference trajectory can be arbitrarily chosen, in the sense that the condition of persistency excitation and any other requirements are not imposed on the leader. In this paper, at first, the tracking control of one leader with single follower is taken into consideration, which is converted to the stabilization of two relative subsystems by the design of an adjoint system. Th…
We study a trajectory tracking problem for a multi-rotor in the presence of modeling error and external disturbances. The desired trajectory is unknown and generated from a reference system with unknown or partially known dynamics. We assume that only position and orientation measurements for the multi-rotor and position measurements for the reference system can be accessed. We adopt an extended high-gain observer (EHGO) estimation framework to estimate the feed-forward term required for trajectory tracking, the multi-rotor states, as well as modeling error and external disturbances. We design…
This paper studies the performance of a model-free LQR based PID (i-LQR-PID) controller designed for tracking control problem of a 2-DoF laboratory helicopter. The control problem addressed in 2-DoF helicopter system aims to track the desired pitch and yaw axes trajectories despite disturbed operating conditions. In addition to the unpredictable variations, the 2-DoF helicopter dynamic is highly nonlinear with having strong cross-couplings in their models as well as being open loop unstable system. Thus, we propose a model-free LQR based PID control strategy in order to achieve better trajecto…
Continuous trajectory tracking control of quadrotors is complicated when considering noise from the environment. Due to the difficulty in modeling the environmental dynamics, tracking methodologies based on conventional control theory, such as model predictive control, have limitations on tracking accuracy and response time. We propose a Time-attenuating Twin Delayed DDPG, a model-free algorithm that is robust to noise, to better handle the trajectory tracking task. A deep reinforcement learning framework is constructed, where a time decay strategy is designed to avoid trapping into local opti…

While many theoretical works concerning Adaptive Dynamic Programming (ADP) have been proposed, application results are scarce. Therefore, we design an ADP-based optimal trajectory tracking controller and apply it to a large-scale ball-on-plate system. Our proposed method incorporates an approximated reference trajectory instead of using setpoint tracking and allows to automatically compensate for constant offset terms. Due to the off-policy characteristics of the algorithm, the method requires only a small amount of measured data to train the controller. Our experimental results show that this…
Accuracy and stability are common requirements for Quadrotor trajectory tracking systems. Designing an accurate and stable tracking controller remains challenging, particularly in unknown and dynamic environments with complex aerodynamic disturbances. We propose a Quantile-approximation-based Distributional-reinforced Uncertainty Estimator (QuaDUE) to accurately identify the effects of aerodynamic disturbances, i.e., the uncertainties between the true and estimated Control Contraction Metrics (CCMs). Taking inspiration from contraction theory and integrating the QuaDUE for uncertainties, our n…
In this paper, we develop safe reinforcement-learning-based controllers for systems tasked with accomplishing complex missions that can be expressed as linear temporal logic specifications, similar to those required by search-and-rescue missions. We decompose the original mission into a sequence of tracking sub-problems under safety constraints. We impose the safety conditions by utilizing barrier functions to map the constrained optimal tracking problem in the physical space to an unconstrained one in the transformed space. Furthermore, we develop policies that intermittently update the contr…
In this paper, we design a hybrid controller that globally exponentially stabilizes a system evolving on the n-dimensional sphere, denoted by Sn. This hybrid controller is induced by a synergistic collection of potential functions on Sn. We propose a particular construction of this class of functions that generates flows along geodesics of the sphere, providing convergence to the desired reference with minimal path length. We show that the proposed strategy is suitable to the exponential stabilization of a quadrotor vehicle.
We consider a quadcopter operating in a turbulent windy environment. The turbulent environment may be imposed on a quadcopter by structures, landscapes, terrains and most importantly by the unique physical phenomena in the lower atmosphere. Turbulence can negatively impact quadcopter's performance and operations. Modeling turbulence as a stochastic random input, we investigate control designs that can reduce the turbulence effects on the quadcopter's motion. In particular, we design a minimum cost variance (MCV) controller aiming to minimize the cost in terms of its weighted sum of mean and va…
Proper operation of the Active Disturbance Rejection (ADR) controller requires a precise determination of the so-called total disturbance affecting the considered dynamical system, usually estimated by the Extended State Observer (ESO). The observation quality of total disturbance has a significant impact on the control error values, making room for a potential improvement of control system performance using different structures of ESO. In this article, we provide a quantitative comparison between the Luenberger and Astolfi/Marconi (AM) observers designed for three different extended state rep…

We propose a control protocol based on the prescribed performance control (PPC) methodology for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Quadrotor systems belong to the class of underactuated systems for which the original PPC methodology cannot be directly applied. We introduce the necessary design modifications to stabilize the considered system with prescribed performance. The proposed control protocol does not use any information of dynamic model parameters or exogenous disturbances. Furthermore, the stability analysis guarantees that the tracking errors remain inside of designer-specifi…
