Recent progress in the Zimmer program

This paper can be viewed as a sequel to the author's long survey on the Zimmer program \cite{F11} published in 2011. The sequel focuses on recent rapid progress on certain aspects of the program particularly concerning rigidity of Anosov actions and Zimmer's conjecture that there are no actions in low dimensions. Some emphasis is put on the surprising connections between these two different sets of developments and also on the key connections and ideas for future research that arise from these works taken together.

Groups acting on manifolds: around the Zimmer program

This paper is a survey on the {\em Zimmer program}. In it's broadest form, this program seeks an understanding of actions of large groups on compact manifolds. The goals of this survey are $(1)$ to put in context the original questions and conjectures of Zimmer and Gromov that motivated the program, $(2)$ to indicate the current state of the art on as many of these conjectures and questions as possible and $(3)$ to indicate a wide variety of open problems and directions of research.

Holomorphic actions, Kummer examples, and Zimmer Program

We classify compact Kähler manifolds $M$ of dimension $n\geq 3$ on which acts a lattice of an almost simple real Lie group of rank $\geq n-1$. This provides a new line in the so-called Zimmer program, and characterizes certain type of complex tori by a property of their automorphisms groups.

Holomorphic actions of higher rank lattices in dimension three

We classify all holomorphic actions of higher rank lattices on compact Kaehler manifolds of dimension 3. This provides a complete answer to Zimmer's program for holomorphic actions on compact Kaehler manifolds of dimension at most 3.

Isometric actions of simple Lie groups on pseudoRiemannian manifolds

Let M be a connected compact pseudoRiemannian manifold acted upon topologically transitively and isometrically by a connected noncompact simple Lie group G. If m_0, n_0 are the dimensions of the maximal lightlike subspaces tangent to M and G, respectively, where G carries any bi-invariant metric, then we have n_0 \leq m_0. We study G-actions that satisfy the condition n_0 = m_0. With no rank restrictions on G, we prove that M has a finite covering \hat{M} to which the G-action lifts so that \hat{M} is G-equivariantly diffeomorphic to an action on a double coset K\backslash L/Γ, as considered i…
