We investigate all standard triple composite M-brane intersections defined on products of Ricci-flat manifolds for preserving supersymmetries in eleven-dimensional N =1 supergravity. The explicit formulae for computing the numbers of preserved supersymmetries are obtained, which generalize the relations for topologically trivial flat factor spaces presented in the classification by Bergshoeff et al. We obtain certain examples of configurations preserving some fractions of supersymmetries, e.g. containing such factor spaces as K3, C^2_{*}/Z_2, a four-dimensional pp-wave manifold and the two-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean manifold R^{1,1}_{*}/Z_2.
We investigate various aspects of the plane wave geometries obtained from D1/D5-brane system. We study the effect of Hopf-duality on the supersymmetries preserved by the Penrose limit of $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ geometry. In type-IIB case, we first show that the Penrose limit makes the size of the `would-be' internal torus comparable to that of the other directions. Based on this observation, we consider, in taking the Penrose limit, the generalization of the null geodesic to incorporate the tilted direction between the equator of $S^3$ and one of the torus directions. For generic values of…
We study the effect of the Born-Infeld electric field on the supersymmetric configuration of various composite D-branes. We show that the generic values of the electric field do not affect the supersymmetry but, as it approaches $1/2πα'$ keeping the magnetic field finite, various combinations of the magnetic fields allow up to 8 supersymmetries. We also explore the unbroken supersymmetries for two intersecting D-strings which are in uniform or relative motion. For a finite uniform Lorentz boost, 16 supersymmetries are guaranteed only when they are parallel. For an infinite one, 8 supersymmetri…
Three-dimensional conformal theories with six supersymmetries and SU(4) R-symmetry describing stacks of M2-branes are here proposed to be related to generalized Jordan triple systems. Writing the four-index structure constants in an appropriate form, the Chern-Simons part of the action immediately suggests a connection to such triple systems. In contrast to the previously considered three-algebras, the additional structure of a generalized Jordan triple system is associated to a graded Lie algebra, which corresponds to an extension of the gauge group. In this note we show that the whole theory…
In extended supergravity theories there are $p$-brane solutions preserving different numbers of supersymmetries, depending on the charges, the spacetime dimension and the number of original supersymmetries (8, 16 or 32). We find U-duality invariant conditions on the quantized charges which specify the number of supersymmetries preserved with a particular charge configuration. These conditions relate U-duality invariants to the picture of intersecting branes. The analysis is carried out for all extended supergravities with 16 or 32 supersymmetries in various dimensions.
We revisit the 1/2-BPS D-branes on the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background. Based only on the classification of 1/2-BPS D-branes obtained by the covariant open string description, we consider various purely static configurations of D-branes without any worldvolume flux on the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background. Under the covariant $κ$ symmetry fixing condition, we investigate which part the spacetime supersymmetries is preserved on the D-brane worldvolume and obtain the associated worldvolume supersymmetry transformation rules to leading order in the worldvolume fluctuating fields. It is shown that, for …
We systematically analyze supersymmetric D-branes in the type IIB plane wave background using Green-Schwarz superstring theory. We find several new supersymmetric oblique and curved D-branes. The supersymmetries preserved by various configurations of these D-branes including their intersections are also identified. In particular, we show that $D_+$-branes of type (+,-,n,n) for n=1,2,3,4 preserve 4 dynamical supersymmetries by introducing gauge field excitations and newly discovered oblique D5- and D7-branes also preserve four or two dynamical supersymmetries with gauge field condensates. Furth…
We identify the fractions of supersymmetry preserved by the most general warped flux AdS and flat backgrounds in both massive and standard IIA supergravities. We find that $AdS_n\times_w M^{10-n}$ preserve $2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $n\leq 4$ and $2^{[{n\over2}]+1} k$ for $4<n\leq 7$ supersymmetries, $k\in \bN_{>0}$. In addition we show that, for suitably restricted fields and $M^{10-n}$, the killing spinors of AdS backgrounds are given in terms of the zero modes of Dirac like operators on $M^{10-n}$. This generalizes the Lichnerowicz theorem for connections whose holonomy is included in a genera…
We present new M2 and M5-brane solutions in M-theory based on transverse Gibbons-Hawking spaces. These solutions provide realizations of fully localized type IIA D2/D6 and NS5/D6 brane intersections. One novel feature of these solutions is that the metric functions depend on more than two transverse coordinates (unlike all the other previous known solutions). All the solutions have eight preserved supersymmetries and the world-volume theories of the NS5-branes are new non-local, non-gravitational, six dimensional, T-dual little string theories with eight supersymmetries. We discuss the limits …
It is of interest to study supergravity solutions preserving a non-minimal fraction of supersymmetries. A necessary condition for supersymmetry to be preserved is that the spacetime admits a Killing spinor and hence a null or timelike Killing vector field. Any spacetime admitting a covariantly constant null vector field ($CCNV$) belongs to the Kundt class of metrics, and more importantly admits a null Killing vector field. We investigate the existence of additional non-spacelike isometries in the class of higher-dimensional $CCNV$ Kundt metrics in order to produce potential solutions that pres…
We present a (unique?) possibility of de Sitter solution in the framework of N=2 supersymmetry (hypersymmetry). We show that a model with a vector and a charged hypermultiplet has a hybrid inflation type potential. It leads to a slow-roll regime in de Sitter type background with all supersymmetries broken spontaneously. Beyond the bifurcation point the waterfall stage abruptly brings the system into a ground state with 2 unbroken supersymmetries. De Sitter stage exists under condition that the superconformal SU(2,2|2) symmetry of the model is softly broken down to N=2 supersymmetry by the vev …
We obtain new examples of partially supersymmetric M-brane solutions defined on products of Ricci-flat manifolds, which contain two-dimensional Lorentzian submanifold R^{1,1}_{*}/Z_2 with one parallel spinor. The examples belong to the following configurations: M2, M5, M2-M5 and M5-M5. Among them a M2 solution with N =1/32 fractional number of preserved supersymmetries is presented. The examples with three M-branes were considered earlier in our paper with A.A. Golubtsova.
In previous work we proposed a field theory model for multiple M2-branes based on an algebra with a totally antisymmetric triple product. In this paper we gauge a symmetry that arises from the algebra's triple product. We then construct a supersymmetric theory that is consistent with all the symmetries expected of a multiple M2-brane theory: 16 supersymmetries, conformal invariance, and an SO(8) R-symmetry that acts on the eight transverse scalars. The gauge field is not dynamical. The result is a new type of maximally supersymmetric gauge theory in three dimensions.
We review the construction of actions with supersymmetry on spaces with a domain wall. The latter objects act as sources inducing a jump in the gauge coupling constant. Despite these singularities, supersymmetry can be formulated, maintaining its role as a square root of translations in this singular space. The setup is designed for the application in five dimensions related to the Randall-Sundrum (RS) scenario. The space has two domain walls. We discuss the solutions of the theory with fixed scalars and full preserved supersymmetry, in which case one of the branes can be pushed to infinity, a…
We show that the supertube configurations exist in all supersymmetric type IIA backgrounds which are purely geometrical and which have, at least, one flat direction. In other words, they exist in any spacetime of the form R^{1,1} x M_8, with M_8 any of the usual reduced holonomy manifolds. These generalised supertubes preserve 1/4 of the supersymmetries preserved by the choice of the manifold M_8. We also support this picture with the construction of their corresponding family of IIA supergravity backgrounds preserving from 1/4 to 1/32 of the total supercharges.
We introduce some (anti)M/D-branes through turning on the corresponding field strengths of the eleven- and ten-dimensional supergravity theories over AdS_4 x M^(7/6) spaces, where we use S^7/Z_k and CP^3 for the internal spaces. Indeed, when we add M2/D2-branes on the same directions with the near horizon branes of Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena model, all symmetries and supersymmetries are preserved trivially. In the case, we gain a localized object just in the horizon. This normalizable bulk massless scalar mode is a singlet of SO(8) and SU(4)x U(1), and agrees with a marginal boundary o…
A supersymmetric string model in the D=11 superspace maximally extended by antisymmetric tensor bosonic coordinates, $Σ^{(528|32)}$, is proposed. It possesses 30 $κ$-symmetries and 32 target space supersymmetries. The usual preserved supersymmetry-$κ$-symmetry correspondence suggests that it describes the excitations of a BPS state preserving all but two supersymmetries. The model can also be formulated in any $Σ^{({n(n+1)\over 2}|n)}$ superspace, n=32 corresponding to D=11. It may also be treated as a `higher--spin generalization' of the usual Green--Schwarz superstring. Although the global s…
We study one dimensional intersections of M5 branes with M5 and M2 branes. On the worldvolume of the M5-brane, such an intersection appears as a string soliton. We study this worldvolume theory in two different regimes: 1) Where the worldvolume theory is formulated in flat space and 2) where the worldvolume theory is studied in the supergravity background produced by a stack of M5 (or M2) branes. In both cases, we study the corresponding string solitons, and find the most general BPS configuration consistent with the fraction of supersymmetries preserved. We argue that M5 and M2 brane intersec…
We study string compactifications with sixteen supersymmetries. The moduli space for these compactifications becomes quite intricate in lower dimensions, partly because there are many different irreducible components. We focus primarily, but not exclusively, on compactifications to seven or more dimensions. These vacua can be realized in a number ways: the perturbative constructions we study include toroidal compactifications of the heterotic/type I strings, asymmetric orbifolds, and orientifolds. In addition, we describe less conventional M and F theory compactifications on smooth spaces. The…
We investigate BPS conditions preserving n/12 (n = 1,...,6) supersymmetries in the Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) model. The BPS equations are classified in terms of the number of preserved supercharges and remaining subgroups of the SU(4)_R symmetry. We study structures of a map between projection conditions for the supercharges in eleven dimensions and those in the ABJM model. The BPS configurations in the ABJM model can be interpreted as known BPS objects in eleven-dimensional Mtheory, such as intersecting M2, M5-branes, M-waves, KK-monopoles and M9-branes. We also show that these…
