The rotating radio transients are sporadic pulsars which are difficult to detect through periodicity searches. By using a single-pulse search method, we can discover these sources, measure their periods, and determine timing solutions. Here we introduce our results on six RRATs based on Parkes and Green Bank Telescope(GBT) observations, along with a comparison of the spin-down properties of RRATs and normal pulsars.
Pulsars show two classes of rotational irregularities that can be used to understand neutron-star interiors and magnetospheres: glitches and timing noise. Here we present an analysis of the Vela pulsar spanning nearly 21 yr of observation and including 8 glitches. We identify the relative pulse number of all of the observations between glitches, with the only pulse-number ambiguities existing over glitch events. We use the phase coherence of the timing solution to simultaneously model the timing noise and glitches in a Bayesian framework, allowing us to select preferred models for both. We fin…
We present the results obtained from timing and spectral studies of the newly discovered accreting X-ray binary pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 using a NuSTAR observation in 2017 October at a flux level of ~280 mCrab. Pulsations at 9.85423(5) s were detected in the X-ray light curves of the pulsar. Pulse profiles of the pulsar were found to be strongly energy dependent. A broad profile at lower energies was found to evolve into a double peaked profile in $\ge$30keV. The 3-79 keV continuum spectrum of the pulsar was well described with a negative and positive exponential cutoff or high energy cutoff …
We have been conducting the GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey for the last four years and have discovered 18 pulsars to date. The GHRSS survey is an off-Galactic-plane survey at 322 MHz in a region of the sky (declination range -40 degrees to -54 degrees) complementary to other ongoing low-frequency surveys. In this paper we report the discovery of three pulsars, PSRs J1239-48, J1516-43 and J1726-52. We also present timing solutions for three pulsars previously discovered with the GHRSS survey: PSR J2144-5237, a millisecond pulsar with a period P=5 ms in a 10 day orbit around a …
We show that for supergiants, net angular momentum is not a necessary condition for forming accretion discs during core-collapse. Even absent net rotation, convective motions in the outer parts of supergiants generate mean horizontal flows at a given radius with velocities of order 1 km/s; the direction of the mean flow will vary as a function of height through the convection zone. We confirm these analytic estimates using Cartesian Boussinesq convection simulations. These mean horizontal flows lead to a random angular momentum in supergiant convection zones that exceeds that of the last stabl…
We present the longest-term timing study so far of three Rotating Radio Transients (RRATs) - J1819-1458, J1840-1419 and J1913+1330 - performed using the Lovell, Parkes and Green Bank telescopes over the past decade. We study long-term and short- term variations of the pulse emission rate from these RRATs and report a marginal indication of a long-term increase in pulse detection rate over time for PSR J1819-1458 and J1913+1330. For PSR J1913+1330, we also observe a two orders of magnitude variation in the observed pulse detection rates across individual epochs, which may constrain the models e…
PSR B0826-34: Sometimes a rotating radio transient
We investigate timing and spectral characteristics of the transient X-ray pulsar 2S 1417$-$624 during its 2018 outburst with \emph{NICER} follow up observations. We describe the spectra with high-energy cut-off and partial covering fraction absorption (PCFA) model and present flux-dependent spectral changes of the source during the 2018 outburst. Utilizing the correlation-mode switching of the spectral model parameters, we confirm the previously reported sub-critical to critical regime transitions and we argue that secondary transition from the gas-dominated to the radiation pressure-dominated…
The Green Bank North Celestial Cap (GBNCC) survey is a 350-MHz all-sky survey for pulsars and fast radio transients using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. To date, the survey has discovered over 190 pulsars, including 33 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and 24 rotating radio transients(RRATs). Several exotic pulsars have been discovered in the survey, including PSR J1759+5036, a binary pulsar with a 176-ms spin period in an orbit with a period of 2.04 days, an eccentricity of 0.3,and a projected semi-major axis of 6.8 light seconds. Using seven years of timing data, we are able to measure on…
During their most recent observing run, LIGO/Virgo reported the gravitational wave (GW) transient S191110af, a burst signal at a frequency of 1.78 kHz that lasted for 0.104 s. While this signal was later deemed non-astrophysical, genuine detections of uncertain origin will occur in the future. Here we study the potential for detecting GWs from neutron star fluid oscillations, which have mode frequency and duration matching those of S191110af and which can be used to constrain the equation of state of nuclear matter. Assuming that such transient oscillations can be excited to energies typical o…
