We present the implementation of a solution scheme for fluid-structure interaction problems via the finite element software library deal.II. The solution scheme is an immersed finite element method in which two independent discretizations are used for the fluid and immersed deformable body. In this type of formulation the support of the equations of motion of the fluid is extended to cover the union of the solid and fluid domains. The equations of motion over the extended solution domain govern the flow of a fluid under the action of a body force field. This body force field informs the fluid of the presence of the immersed solid. The velocity field of the immersed solid is the restriction over the immersed domain of the velocity field in the extended equations of motion. The focus of this paper is to show how the determination of the motion of the immersed domain is carried out in practice. We show that our implementation is general, that is, it is not dependent on a specific choice of the finite element spaces over the immersed solid and the extended fluid domains. We present some preliminary results concerning the accuracy of the proposed method.
This work presents the efficient, matrix-free finite-element library hyper.deal for solving partial differential equations in two to six dimensions with high-order discontinuous Galerkin methods. It builds upon the low-dimensional finite-element library deal.II to create complex low-dimensional meshes and to operate on them individually. These meshes are combined via a tensor product on the fly and the library provides new special-purpose highly optimized matrix-free functions exploiting domain decomposition as well as shared memory via MPI-3.0 features. Both node-level performance analyses an…
We propose a finite element method for simulating one-dimensional solid models moving and experiencing large deformations while immersed in generalized Newtonian fluids. The method is oriented towards applications involving microscopic devices or organisms in the soft-bio-matter realm. By considering that the strain energy of the solid may explicitly depend on time, we incorporate a mechanism for active response. The solids are modeled as Cosserat rods, a detailed formulation being provided for the special case of a planar non-shearable rod. The discretization adopts one-dimensional Hermite el…

In this paper we employ two implementations of the fictitious domain (FD) method to simulate water-entry and water-exit problems and demonstrate their ability to simulate practical marine engineering problems. In FD methods, the fluid momentum equation is extended within the solid domain using an additional body force that constrains the structure velocity to be that of a rigid body. Using this formulation, a single set of equations is solved over the entire computational domain. The constraint force is calculated in two distinct ways: one using an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework of the immersed…

For the stationary advection-diffusion problem the standard continuous Galerkin method is unstable without some additional control on the mesh or method. The interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is stable but at the expense of an increased number of degrees of freedom. The hybrid method proposed in [5] combines the computational complexity of the continuous method with the stability of the discontinuous method without a significant increase in degrees of freedom. We discuss the implementation of this method using the finite element library deal.ii and present some numerical experimen…
We present a new finite element method, called $ϕ$-FEM, to solve numerically elliptic partial differential equations with natural (Neumann or Robin) boundary conditions using simple computational grids, not fitted to the boundary of the physical domain. The boundary data are taken into account using a level-set function, which is a popular tool to deal with complicated or evolving domains. Our approach belongs to the family of fictitious domain methods (or immersed boundary methods) and is close to recent methods of cutFEM/XFEM type. Contrary to the latter, $ϕ$-FEM does not need any non-standa…
