We review fits to "light WIMPs" since the region was first mentioned relative to the DAMA collaboration data in 2003 to the present, analyzing the compatibility of potential signals and bounds in this region. We include dark halo independent data comparisons.
After a brief introduction to dark matter in general and to WIMPs as candidates, we review recent results of direct dark matter searches. We concentrate on older and more recent hints pointing to light WIMP's with mass below 10 GeV.
We assess the status of a wide class of WIMP dark matter (DM) models in light of the latest experimental results using the global fitting framework $\textsf{GAMBIT}$. We perform a global analysis of effective field theory (EFT) operators describing the interactions between a gauge-singlet Dirac fermion and the Standard Model quarks, the gluons and the photon. In this bottom-up approach, we simultaneously vary the coefficients of 14 such operators up to dimension 7, along with the DM mass, the scale of new physics and several nuisance parameters. Our likelihood functions include the latest data…
The CoGeNT and CRESST WIMP direct detection experiments have recently observed excesses of nuclear recoil events, while the DAMA/LIBRA experiment has a long standing annual modulation signal. It has been suggested that these excesses may be due to light mass, m_chi ~ 5-10 GeV, WIMPs. The Earth's motion with respect to the Galactic rest frame leads to a directional dependence in the WIMP scattering rate, providing a powerful signal of the Galactic origin of any recoil excess. We investigate whether direct detection experiments with directional sensitivity have the potential to observe this anis…
Over the past few decades, an anomalous 511 keV gamma-ray line has been observed from the centre of the Milky Way. Dark matter (DM) in the form of light weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) annihilating into electron-positron pairs has been one of the leading hypotheses of the observed emission. Given the small required cross section, a further coupling to lighter particles is required to produce the correct relic density. Here, we derive constraints from the Planck satellite on light WIMPs that were in equilibrium with either the neutrino or electron sector in the early universe. For …
Light WIMP dark matter and hidden sector dark matter have been proposed to explain the DAMA, CoGeNT and CRESST-II data. Both of these approaches feature spin independent elastic scattering of dark matter particles on nuclei. Light WIMP dark matter invokes a single particle species which interacts with ordinary matter via contact interactions. By contrast hidden sector dark matter is typically multi-component and is assumed to interact via the exchange of a massless mediator. Such hidden sector dark matter thereby predicts a sharply rising nuclear recoil spectrum, $dR/dE_R \sim 1/E_R^2$ due to …
The Planck and WMAP9 satellites, as well as the ATACAMA and South Pole telescopes, have recently presented results on the angular power spectrum of the comic microwave background. Data tentatively point to the existence of an extra radiation component in the early universe. Here, we show that this extra component can be mimicked by ordinary WIMP dark matter particles whose majority is cold, but with a small fraction being non-thermally produced in a relativistic state. We present a few example theories where this scenario is explicitly realized, and explore the relevant parameter space consist…
We present a halo-independent analysis of direct detection data on "light WIMPs," i.e. weakly interacting massive particles with mass close to or below 10 GeV/c^2. We include new results from silicon CDMS detectors (bounds and excess events), the latest CoGeNT acceptances, and recent measurements of low sodium quenching factors in NaI crystals. We focus on light WIMPs with spin-independent isospin-conserving and isospin-violating interactions with nucleons. For these dark matter candidates we find that a low quenching factor would make the DAMA modulation incompatible with a reasonable escape …
We consider quantum corrections to co-annihilation processes of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) due to the exchange of light bosons in the initial state ("Sommerfeld corrections"). We work at one-loop level, i.e. we assume that these corrections can be treated perturbatively. Co-annihilation is important if there is at least one additional new particle with mass close to the lightest WIMP, which is a Dark Matter candidate. In this case the exchange of a (relatively light) boson in the initial state can change the identity of the annihilating particles. The corrections we are inter…
According to conventional wisdom, in the standard model (SM) of particle physics and cosmology the effective number of neutrinos is Neff=3 (more precisely, 3.046). In extensions of the standard model allowing for the presence of DeltaNnu equivalent neutrinos (or dark radiation), Neff is generally >3. The canonical results are reconsidered here, revealing that a measurement of Neff>3 can be consistent with DeltaNnu=0 (dark radiation without dark radiation). Conversely, a measurement consistent with Neff=3 is not inconsistent with the presence of dark radiation (DeltaNnu>0). In particular, if th…
Taking liquid xenon detectors as a case study, the importance of a robust recoil energy calibration as a prerequisite to a search for light-mass Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) is emphasized. Important shortfalls in the analysis of existing measurements of the relative scintillation efficiency and ionization yield for nuclear recoils in liquid xenon are described, leading to the conclusion that recent attempts to extract light-WIMP sensitivity limits from the XENON10 and XENON100 detectors are premature and overly optimistic.
We argue that current neutron star observations exclude asymmetric bosonic non-interacting dark matter in the range from 2 keV to 16 GeV, including the 5-15 GeV range favored by DAMA and CoGeNT. If bosonic WIMPs are composite of fermions, the same limits apply provided the compositeness scale is higher than ~10^12 GeV (for WIMP mass ~1 GeV). In case of repulsive self-interactions, we exclude large range of WIMP masses and interaction cross sections which complements the constraints imposed by observations of the Bullet Cluster.
In the post-LHC8 era, it is perceived that what is left of SUSY model parameter space is highly finetuned in the EW sector (EWFT). We discuss how conventional measures overestimate EWFT in SUSY theory. Radiatively-driven natural SUSY (RNS) models maintain the SUSY GUT paradigm with low EWFT at 10% level, but are characterized by light higgsinos ~100-300 GeV and a thermal underabundance of WIMP dark matter. Implementing the SUSY DFSZ solution to the strong CP problem explains the small μparameter but indicates dark matter should be comprised mainly of axions with a small admixture of higgsino-l…
(Abridged) In the presence of a light WIMP (< 30 MeV), there are degeneracies among the nature of the WIMP, its couplings to standard model particles, its mass m_chi, and the number of equivalent neutrinos beyond the standard model, Delta N_nu. These degeneracies cannot be broken by the CMB constraint on the effective number of neutrinos, N_eff. However, big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is affected by a light WIMP and equivalent neutrinos, so the combination of BBN and CMB can break some of the degeneracies. Here, BBN predictions for abundances in the presence of a light WIMP and equivalent neut…
A light fermionic weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter is investigated by studying its minimal renormalizable model, where it requires a scalar mediator to have an interaction between the WIMP and standard model particles. We perform a comprehensive likelihood analysis of the model involving the latest but robust constraints and those will be obtained in the near future. In addition, we pay particular attention to properly take the kinematically equilibrium condition into account. It is shown that near-future experiments and observations such as low-mass direct dark matter de…
In these proceedings, we report on the possible signatures of a light scalar WIMP, a dark matter candidate with M_DM ~ few GeV, which is supposed to interact with the Standard Model particles through the Higgs, and which might be related to the annual modulation observed by DAMA.
Motivated by the measurements reported by direct detection experiments, most notably DAMA, CDMS-II, CoGeNT and Xenon10/100, we study further the constraints that might be set on some light dark matter candidates, M_DM ~ few GeV, using the Fermi-LAT data on the isotropic gamma-ray diffuse emission. In particular, we consider a Dirac fermion singlet interacting through a new Z' gauge boson, and a scalar singlet S interacting through the Higgs portal. Both candidates are WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles), i.e. they have an annihilation cross-section in the pbarn range. Also they may bot…
In these proceedings, I report on the status of a simple singlet scalar dark matter model in the light of recent results from both direct detection experiments, in particular DAMA, CoGeNT, CDMS-II and Xenon10/100, and indirect searches, in particular Fermi-LAT. Specifically, I confront the light scalar WIMP candidates, M_DM ~ few GeV, that are consistent with CoGeNT and/or DAMA, to constraints that may be set using the recent Fermi-LAT data on Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) and the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray emission. I show that the latter observations set relevant exclusion lim…
Once weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are unambiguously detected in direct-detection experiments, the challenge will be to determine what one may infer from the data. Here, I examine the prospects for reconstructing the local speed distribution of WIMPs in addition to WIMP particle-physics properties (mass, cross sections) from next-generation cryogenic and liquid-noble direct-detection experiments. I find that the common method of fixing the form of the velocity distribution when estimating constraints on WIMP mass and cross sections means losing out on the information on the spee…
In the present work we examine the possibility of detecting light dark matter particles (WIMP) utilizing their possible interactions with the electrons. Employing reasonable theoretical models we evaluate the expected event rates in the following cases: i) For WIMPs in the meV region treating electrons as free and utilizing calorimetric detectors at low temperatures. ii) Detecting recoiling electrons with energy in the eV region ejected out of an atom in the case of WIMPs with a mass more than an order of magnitude heavier than the electron. iii) By observing atomic excitations in the range of…
We reexamine the current direct dark matter data including the recent CDMSlite and LUX data, assuming that the dark matter consists of light WIMPs, with mass close to 10 GeV/$c^2$ with spin-independent and isospin-conserving or isospin-violating interactions. We compare the data with a standard model for the dark halo of our galaxy and also in a halo-independent manner. In our standard-halo analysis, we find that for isospin-conserving couplings, CDMSlite and LUX together exclude the DAMA, CoGeNT, CDMS-II-Si, and CRESST-II possible WIMP signal regions. For isospin-violating couplings instead, …
Dark Matter experiments searching for Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) primarily use nuclear recoils (NRs) in their attempt to detect WIMPs. Migdal-induced electronic recoils (ERs) provide additional sensitivity to light Dark Matter with $\mathcal{O}(\text{GeV}/c^2)$ masses. In this work, we use Bayesian inference to find the parameter space where future detectors like XENONnT and SuperCDMS SNOLAB will be able to detect WIMP Dark Matter through NRs, Migdal-induced ERs or a combination thereof. We identify regions where each detector is best at constraining the Dark Matter mass and …
In the present work we examine the possibility for detecting electrons in dark matter searches. These detectors are considered to be the most appropriate for detecting light dark matter particles in the MeV region. We analyze theoretically some key issues involved in such a detection and we perform calculations for the expected rates employing reasonable theoretical models.
Possible hints for WIMP dark matter with mass around 10 GeV coming from the DAMA, CoGeNT, and maybe also CRESST experiments are presented, and confronted with constraints from CDMS and XENON data. Focusing on spin-independent (SI) WIMP--nucleus interactions, I elaborate on the difficulties to make the hints consistent with each other and to evade the constraints, mentioning energy scale uncertainties, quenching and light-yield factors, as well as uncertainties on halo properties. In the present situation it seems hard to reconcile all data within the SI framework, which suggests that if the ex…
We examine whether the annual modulation found by the DAMA dark matter experiment can be explained by Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), in light of new null results from other experiments. CDMS II has already ruled out most WIMP-nucleus spin-independent couplings as an explanation for DAMA data. Hence we here focus on spin-dependent (axial vector; SD) couplings of WIMPs to nuclei. We expand upon previous work by (i) considering the general case of coupling to both protons and neutrons and (ii) incorporating bounds from all existing experiments. We note the surprising fact that CMDS…
We present extrapolations of the current mono-jet searches at the LHC to potential future hadron collider facilities: LHC14, as well as $pp$ colliders with $\sqrt{s}=33$ or 100 TeV. We consider both the effective operator approach as well as one example of a light mediating particle.
Very light WIMPs (chi), thermal relics that annihilate late in the early Universe, change the energy and entropy densities at BBN and at recombination. BBN, in combination with the CMB, can remove some of the degeneracies among light WIMPs and equivalent neutrinos, constraining the existence and properties of each. Depending on the nature of the light WIMP (Majorana or Dirac fermion, real or complex scalar) the joint BBN + CMB analyses set lower bounds to m_chi in the range 0.5 - 5 MeV (m_chi/m_e > 1 - 10), and they identify best fit values for m_chi in the range 5 - 10 MeV. The joint BBN + CM…
We present updated global fits of the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (cMSSM), including the most recent constraints from the ATLAS and CMS detectors at the LHC, as well as the most recent results of the XENON100 experiment. Our robust analysis takes into account both astrophysical and hadronic uncertainties that enter in the calculation of the rate of WIMP-induced recoils in direct detection experiment. We study the consequences for neutralino Dark Matter, and show that current direct detection data already allow to robustly rule out the so-called Focus Point region, therefo…
We demonstrate that the further indication of a possible annual modulation effect, singled out by the DAMA/NaI experiment for WIMP direct detection, is widely compatible with an interpretation in terms of a relic neutralino as the major component of dark matter in the Universe. We discuss the supersymmetric features of this neutralino in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) and their implications for searches at accelerators.
The differential event rate for direct detection of dark matter, both the time averaged and the modulated one due to the motion of the Earth, are discussed. The calculations focus on relatively light cold dark matter candidates (WIMP) and low energy transfers. It is shown that for sufficiently light WIMPs the extraction of relatively large nucleon cross sections is possible. Furthermore for some WIMP masses the modulation amplitude may change sign, meaning that, in such a case, the maximum rate may occur six months later than naively expected. This effect can be exploited to yield information …
In the present work we examine the implications on dark matter searches of the possibility of a partial decay of a neutron into a dark matter particle, slightly lighter than itself. Such a scenario recently proposed is required to bridge the discrepancy between the results of two different experiments measuring the life time of the neutron. It was subsequently suggested that this light dark matter candidate could make up the whole of dark matter in the universe. We thus first compute the nucleon cross section based on such models. Then we proceed explore the various signatures appearing in dar…
The predictions of our previous analyses about possible low-mass (lower than 50 GeV) relic neutralinos are discussed in the light of the most recent results from WIMP direct detection experiments. It is proved that these light neutralinos are quite compatible with the new annual-modulation data of the DAMA Collaboration; our theoretical predictions are also compared with the upper bounds of the CDMS and EDELWEISS Collaborations.
We calculate solar models including dark matter (DM) weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs) of mass 5-50 GeV and test these models against helioseismic constraints on sound speed, convection zone depth, convection zone helium abundance, and small separations of low-degree p-modes. Our main conclusion is that both direct detection experiments and particle accelerators may be complemented by using the Sun as a probe for WIMP DM particles in the 5-50 GeV mass range. The DM most sensitive to this probe has suppressed annihilations and a large spin-dependent elastic scattering cross section. …
We review several current aspects of dark matter theory and experiment. We overview the present experimental status, which includes current bounds and recent claims and hints of a possible signal in a wide range of experiments: direct detection in underground laboratories, gamma-ray, cosmic ray, X-ray, neutrino telescopes, and the LHC. We briefly review several possible particle candidates for a Weakly Interactive Massive Particle (WIMP) and dark matter that have recently been considered in the literature. We pay particular attention to the lightest neutralino of supersymmetry as it remains th…
Scenarios where left- and right-handed sneutrinos mix and the lightest mixed one act as a thermal dark matter candidate can solve the dark matter, neutrino mass, and hierarchy problems simultaneously. We focus on the dark matter mass region of the order of 1 GeV, where dark matter direct detections are insensitive. We calculate the decay rate of a false vacuum induced by a large sneutrino trilinear coupling as well as other observables constrained by experiments. As a result, we show that there is an allowed region where the mass of the lightest neutralino is around 1 GeV. The allowed region c…
A Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) provides an attractive dark matter candidate, and should be within reach of the next generation of high-energy colliders. We consider the process of direct WIMP pair-production, accompanied by an initial-state radiation photon, in electron-positron collisions at the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC). We present a parametrization of the differential cross section for this process which conveniently separates the model-independent information provided by cosmology from the model-dependent inputs from particle physics. As an application, we …
New upper bounds on direct detection rates have recently been presented by a number of experimental collaborations working on searches for WIMPs. In this paper we analyze how the constraints on relic neutralinos which can be derived from these results is affected by the uncertainties in the distribution function of WIMPs in the halo. Various different categories of velocity distribution functions are considered, and the ensuing implications for supersymmetric configurations derived. We conservatively conclude that current experimental data do not constrain neutralinos of small mass (below 50 G…
Recent updates to the observational determinations of the primordial abundances of helium and deuterium are compared to the predictions of BBN to infer the universal ratio of baryons to photons (or, the present Universe baryon mass density parameter Omega_B h^2), as well as to constrain the effective number of neutrinos (N_eff) and the number of equivalent neutrinos (Delta N_nu). These BBN results are compared to those derived independently from the Planck CMB data. In the absence of a light WIMP (chi), N_eff = 3.05(1 + Delta N_nu/3). In this case, there is excellent agreement between BBN and …
We study the accuracy with which the WIMP mass could be determined by a superCDMS-like direct detection experiment, given optimistic assumptions about the detector set-up and WIMP properties. We consider WIMPs with an interaction cross-section of σ_{\rm p} = 10^{-7} {\rm pb} (just below current exclusion limits) and assume, initially, that the local WIMP velocity distribution and density are known and that the experiment has negligible background. For light WIMPs (mass significantly less than that of the target nuclei) small variations in the WIMP mass lead to significant changes in the energy…
A proposal submitted to the FNAL PAC is described to search for light sub-GeV WIMP dark matter at MiniBooNE. The possibility to steer the beam past the target and into an absorber leads to a significant reduction in neutrino background, allowing for a sensitive search for elastic scattering of WIMPs off nucleons or electrons in the detector. Dark matter models involving a vector mediator can be probed in a parameter region consistent with the required thermal relic density, and which overlaps the region in which these models can resolve the muon g-2 discrepancy. Estimates of signal significanc…
The halo independent comparison of direct dark matter detection data eliminates the need to make any assumption on the uncertain local dark matter distribution and is complementary to the usual data comparison which required assuming a dark halo model for our galaxy. The method, initially proposed for WIMPs with spin-independent contact interactions, has been generalized to any other interaction and applied to recent data on "Light WIMPs".
Recently the DAMA/NaI Collaboration reported further indication of a possible modulation effect in WIMP direct detection. In this note we discuss the relevance of this result for supersymmetric theories where the neutralino is the dark matter candidate. We specifically consider the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) and Supergravity-inspired schemes, with possible deviations of the unification conditions at the GUT scale in the Higgs sector. The main results of our analysis show that the annual modulation data are widely compatible with an interpretation in terms of …
We study constraints on the models of bosonic super-weakly interacting particle (super-WIMP) dark matter (DM) with DM masses $m_X \sim \mathcal{O}(1 - 100)$ keV from leptonic decays $M\rightarrow \ell \barν_\ell + X$, where $M=B^\pm, D^\pm, D_s^\pm$ is a heavy meson state. We focus on two cases where $X$ denotes either a light pseudoscalar (axion-like), or a light vector state that couples to the standard model (SM) through kinetic mixing. We note that for a small DM mass these decays are separately sensitive to DM couplings to quarks, but not its mass.
There are several ways to explain the dark matter relic density other than by the ordinary freeze-out scenario. For example, the freeze-in mechanism may constitute an alternative for generating the correct relic density for dark matter candidates whose predicted freeze-out abundance is too low due to a large total annihilation cross section. Here we show that although such a mechanism could explain why a dark matter candidate has the correct relic density, some candidates may still be ruled out because they would lead to a large gamma ray flux in dwarf spheroidal galaxies or a large elastic sc…
Direct detection dark matter experiments looking for WIMP-nucleus elastic scattering will soon be sensitive to an irreducible background from neutrinos which will drastically affect their discovery potential. Here we explore how the neutrino background will affect future ton-scale experiments considering both spin-dependent and spin-independent interactions. We show that combining data from experiments using different targets can improve the dark matter discovery potential due to target complementarity. We find that in the context of spin-dependent interactions, combining results from several …
A light scalar WIMP is studied in view of the recent results of the DAMA collaboration. In a scenario where both the WIMP's annihilation and its elastic scattering on nuclei occur dominantly through Higgs exchange, a one-to-one relation between the WIMP's relic density and its spin-independent direct detection rate is established. The ratio of the relevant cross sections depends only on the dark matter mass if the range allowed by the DAMA results (m < 10 GeV) is considered. We show that if such a light scalar WIMP possesses a direct detection rate compatible with DAMA, it naturally obtains a …
In the last decade direct detection Dark Matter (DM) experiments have increased enormously their sensitivity and ton-scale setups have been proposed, especially using germanium and xenon targets with double readout and background discrimination capabilities. In light of this situation, we study the prospects for determining the parameters of Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) DM (mass, spin-dependent (SD) and spin-independent (SI) cross section off nucleons) by combining the results of such experiments in the case of a hypothetical detection. In general, the degeneracy between the SD a…
Light WIMPs are dark matter particle candidates with weak scale interaction with the known particles, and mass in the GeV to 10's of GeV range. Hints of light WIMPs have appeared in several dark matter searches in the last decade. The unprecedented possible coincidence into tantalizingly close regions of mass and cross section of four separate direct detection experimental hints and a potential indirect detection signal in gamma rays from the galactic center, aroused considerable interest in our field. Even if these hints did not so far result in a discovery, they have had a significant impact…
In this paper, we study the recent excess of low energy events observed by the CoGeNT collaboration, and discuss the possibility that these events originate from the elastic scattering of a light (m_DM ~ 5-10 GeV) dark matter particle. We find that such a dark matter candidate may also be capable of generating the annual modulation reported by DAMA, as well as the small excess recently reported by CDMS, without conflicting with the null results from other experiments, such as XENON10. A dark matter interpretation of the CoGeNT and DAMA observations favors a region of parameter space that is es…
Thermal freeze-out is a prominent example of dark matter (DM) production mechanism in the early Universe that can yield the correct relic density of stable weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). At the other end of the mass scale, many popular extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of ultra-light scalar fields. These can be coupled to matter, preferentially in a universal and shift-symmetry-preserving way. We study the impact of such conformal and disformal couplings on the relic density of WIMPs, without introducing modifications to the thermal history of the Universe. …
A weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) weighing only a few GeV has been invoked as an explanation for the signal from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. We show that the data from DAMA/LIBRA are now powerful enough to strongly constrain the properties of any putative WIMP. Accounting for the detailed recoil spectrum, a light WIMP with a Maxwellian velocity distribution and a spin-independent (SI) interaction cannot account for the data. Even neglecting the spectrum, much of the parameter space is excluded by limits from the DAMA unmodulated signal at low energies. Significant modifications to th…
Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) are among the best-motivated dark matter candidates. In light of no conclusive detection signal yet despite an extensive search program that combines, often in a complementary way, direct, indirect, and collider probes, we find it timely to give a broad overview of the WIMP paradigm. In particular, we review here the theoretical foundations of the WIMP paradigm, discuss status and prospects of various detection strategies, and explore future experimental challenges and opportunities.
We reconsider the discovery limit of multi-ton direct detection dark matter experiments in the light of recent measurements of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering process. Assuming the cross section to be a parameter entirely determined by data, rather than using its Standard Model prediction, we use the COHERENT CsI and LAr data sets to determine WIMP discovery limits. Being based on a data-driven approach, the results are thus free from theoretical assumptions and fall within the WIMP mass regions where XENONnT and DARWIN have best expected sensitivities. We further determine th…
Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are arguably the most natural DM candidates from a particle physics point of view. After their number density has frozen out in the early universe, determining their relic density today, WIMPs are still kept very close to thermal equilibrium by scattering events with standard model particles. The complete decoupling from the thermal bath happens as late as around 1-10 MeV, thereby setting an important cosmological scale that can directly be translated into a small-scale cutoff of the spectrum of matter density fluctuations. We present here a full an…
The DAMA Collaboration has recently analyzed its data of the extensive WIMP direct search (DAMA/NaI) which detected an annual modulation, by taking into account the channelling effect which occurs when an ion traverses a detector with a crystalline structure. Among possible implications, this Collaboration has considered the case of a coherent WIMP-nucleus interaction and then derived the form of the annual modulation region in the plane of the WIMP-nucleon cross section versus the WIMP mass, using a specific modelling for the channelling effect. In the present paper we first show that light n…
If dark matter (DM) simply consists in a scalar particle interacting dominantly with the Higgs boson, the ratio of its annihilation cross section ---which is relevant both for the relic abundance and indirect detection--- and its spin-independent scattering cross section on nuclei depends only on the DM mass. It is an intriguing result that, fixing the mass and direct detection rate to fit the annual modulation observed by the DAMA experiment, one obtains a relic density in perfect agreement with its observed value. In this short letter we update this result and confront the model to the recen…
Recently, the CoGeNT collaboration reported the WIMP candidate signal events exceeding the known backgrounds where the light WIMP with large cross section is supported. Motivated by this issue, we analyze a light neutralino dark matter scenario with a very light CP-even Higgs mediation in the elastic scattering process, which provides the mass and direct detection cross section to explain the CoGeNT result. To be compatible with the result of LEP experiments, the light CP-even Higgs is favored to be in 9 to 10 GeV. Such a scenario can be realized in the "Beyond the MSSM" context. The relic abu…
Over the last years, new physics in terms of a novel weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP) has come more and more under pressure from experimental null results. While the remaining WIMP parameter space will be probed by next generation dark matter experiments, models of light new physics have become increasingly popular over the last decade. In an effort to explore the parameter space of such light physics, a myriad of custom designed high-precision/low-energy experiments has been proposed. In this note, however, I argue that existing LHC multipurpose experiments like ATALS and CMS have a…
