We discuss the production of ultracold molecules in their electronic ground state by photoassociation employing electronically excited states with ion-pair character and strong spin-orbit interaction. A short photoassociation laser pulse drives a non-resonant three-photon transition for alkali atoms colliding in their lowest triplet state. The excited state wave packet is transferred to the ground electronic state by a second laser pulse, driving a resonant two-photon transition. After analyzing the transition matrix elements governing the stabilization step, we discuss the efficiency of population transfer using transform-limited and linearly chirped laser pulses. Finally, we employ optimal control theory to find the most efficient stabilization pathways. We find that the stabilization efficiency can be increased by one and two orders of magnitude for linearly chirped and optimally shaped laser pulses, respectively.
The transfer of weakly bound KRb molecules from levels just below the dissociation threshold into the vibrational ground state with shaped laser pulses is studied. Optimal control theory is employed to calculate the pulses. The complexity of modelling the molecular structure is successively increased in order to study the effects of the long-range behavior of the excited state potential, resonant spin-orbit coupling and singlet-triplet mixing.
A systematic study of the leading isotropic van der Waals coefficients for the alkali-metal atom + molecule and molecule + molecule systems is presented. Dipole moments and static and dynamic dipole polarizabilities are calculated employing high-level quantum chemistry calculations. The dispersion, induction, and rotational parts of the isotropic van der Waals coefficient are evaluated. The known van der Waals coefficients are then used to derive characteristics essential for simple models of the collisions involving the corresponding ultracold polar molecules.
An experimental pump-probe study of the photoassociative creation of translationally ultracold rubidium molecules is presented together with numerical simulations of the process. The formation of loosely bound excited-state dimers is observed as a first step towards a fully coherent pump-dump approach to the stabilization of Rb$_2$ into its lowest ground vibrational states. The population that contributes to the pump-probe process is characterized and found to be distinct from a background population of pre-associated molecules.
We explore bright soliton solutions of ultracold Bose-Fermi gases, showing that the presence of p-wave interactions can remove the usual collapse instability and support stable soliton solutions that are global energy minima. A variational model that incorporates the relevant s- and p-wave interactions in the system is established analytically and solved numerically to probe the dependencies of the solitons on key experimental parameters. Under attractive s-wave interactions, bright solitons exist only as meta-stable states susceptible to collapse. Remarkably, the presence of repulsive p-wave …
Ultracold metastable RbCs molecules are observed in a double species MOT through photoassociation near the Rb(5S$_{1/2}$)+Cs(6P$_{3/2}$) dissociation limit followed by radiative stabilization. The molecules are formed in their lowest triplet electronic state and are detected by resonant enhanced two-photon ionization through the previously unobserved $(3)^{3}Π\leftarrow a^{3}Σ^{+}$ band. The large rotational structure of the observed photoassociation lines is assigned to the lowest vibrational levels of the $0^+,0^-$ excited states correlated to the Rb(5P$_{1/2}$)+Cs(6S$_{1/2}$) dissociation l…
The resonance states of one- and two-particle Hamiltonians are studied using variational expansions with real basis-set functions. The resonance energies, $E_r$, and widths, $Γ$, are calculated using the density of states and an ${\mathcal L}^2$ golden rule-like formula. We present a recipe to select adequately some solutions of the variational problem. The set of approximate energies obtained shows a very regular behaviour with the basis-set size, $N$. Indeed, these particular variational eigenvalues show a quite simple scaling behaviour and convergence when $N\rightarrow \infty$. Following t…
State-of-the-art {\em ab initio} techniques have been applied to compute the potential energy curves for the SrYb molecule in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the ground state and first fifteen excited singlet and triplet states within the coupled-cluster framework. The leading long-range coefficients describing the dispersion interactions at large interatomic distances are also reported. The electric transition dipole moments have been obtained as the first residue of the polarization propagator computed with the linear response coupled-cluster method restricted to single and double exc…
We demonstrate phase and frequency stabilization of a diode laser at the thermal noise limit of a passive optical cavity. The system is compact and exploits a cavity design that reduces vibration sensitivity. The sub-Hz laser is characterized by comparison to a second independent system with similar fractional frequency stability (1 x 10-15 at 1 s). The laser is further characterized by resolving a 2 Hz wide, ultranarrow optical clock transition in ultracold strontium.
We describe the design, construction, and characterization of a medium-finesse Fabry-Pérot cavity for simultaneous frequency stabilization of two lasers operating at 960 and 780 nm wavelengths, respectively. The lasers are applied in experiments with ultracold rubidium Rydberg atoms, for which a combined laser linewidth similar to the natural Rydberg linewidth (approximately 10 kHz) is desired. The cavity, with a finesse of approximately 1500, is used to reduce the linewidth of the lasers to below this level. By using a spacer made of ultra low expansion (ULE) glass with active temperature sta…
This theoretical paper investigates the formation of ground state molecules from ultracold cesium atoms in a two-color scheme. Following previous work on photoassociation with chirped picosecond pulses [Luc-Koenig et al., Phys. Rev. A {\bf 70}, 033414 (2004)], we investigate stabilization by a second (dump) pulse. By appropriately choosing the dump pulse parameters and time delay with respect to the photoassociation pulse, we show that a large number of deeply bound molecules are created in the ground triplet state. We discuss (i) broad-bandwidth dump pulses which maximize the probability to f…
The lifetime of nonreactive ultracold bialkali gases was conjectured to be limited by sticky collisions amplifying three-body loss. We show that the sticking times were previously overestimated and do not support this hypothesis. We find that electronic excitation of NaK+NaK collision complexes by the trapping laser leads to the experimentally observed two-body loss. We calculate the excitation rate with a quasiclassical, statistical model employing ab initio potentials and transition dipole moments. Using longer laser wavelengths or repulsive box potentials may suppress the losses.
Ultracold assembly of diatomic molecules has enabled great advances in controlled chemistry, ultracold chemical physics, and quantum simulation with molecules. Extending the ultracold association to triatomic molecules will offer many new research opportunities and challenges in these fields. A possible approach is to form triatomic molecules in the ultracold atom and diatomic molecule mixture by employing the Feshbach resonance between them. Although the ultracold atom-diatomic-molecule Feshbach resonances have been observed recently, utilizing these resonances to form triatomic molecules rem…
We report on the creation of bosonic NaCs molecules in their absolute rovibrational ground state via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. We create ultracold gases with up to 22,000 dipolar NaCs molecules at a temperature of 300(50) nK and a peak density of $1.0(4) \times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$. We demonstrate comprehensive quantum state control by preparing the molecules in a specific electronic, vibrational, rotational, and hyperfine state. Employing the tunability and strength of the permanent electric dipole moment of NaCs, we induce dipole moments of up to 2.6 D. Dipolar systems of NaCs molecu…
We demonstrate the direct formation of vibronic ground state RbCs molecules by photoassociation of ultracold atoms followed by radiative stabilization. The photoassociation proceeds through deeply-bound levels of the (2)^{3}Π_{0^{+}} state. From analysis of the relevant free-to-bound and bound-to-bound Franck-Condon factors, we have predicted and experimentally verified a set of photoassociation resonances that lead to efficient creation of molecules in the v=0 vibrational level of the X^{1}Σ^{+} electronic ground state. We also compare the observed and calculated laser intensity required to s…
Ultracold molecules trapped in optical tweezers show great promise for the implementation of quantum technologies and precision measurements. We study a prototypical scenario where two interacting polar molecules placed in separate traps are controlled using an external electric field. This, for instance, enables a quantum computing scheme in which the rotational structure is used to encode the qubit states. We estimate the typical operation timescales needed for state engineering to be in the range of few microseconds. We further underline the important role of the spatial structure of the tw…
Coherence, the stability of the relative phase between quantum states, lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. Applications such as precision measurement, interferometry, and quantum computation are enabled by physical systems that have quantum states with robust coherence. With the creation of molecular ensembles at sub-$μ$K temperatures, diatomic molecules have become a novel system under full quantum control. Here, we report on the observation of stable coherence between a pair of nuclear spin states of ultracold fermionic NaK molecules in the singlet rovibrational ground state. Employing m…
We present our experimental setup to produce ultracold strongly correlated fermionic superfluids made of a two-component spin-mixture of $^6$Li atoms. Employing standard cooling techniques, we achieve quantum degeneracy in a single-beam optical dipole trap. Our setup is capable of generating spin-balanced samples at temperatures as low as $T/T_F = 0.1$ containing up to $5 \times 10^4$ atomic pairs. We can access different superfluid regimes by tuning the interparticle interactions close to a broad magnetic Feshbach resonance. In particular, we are able to explore the crossover from the molecul…

We report on measurements of the binding energies of several weakly bound vibrational states of the paramagnetic $^{174}$Yb$^{6}$Li molecule in the electronic ground state using two-photon spectroscopy in an ultracold atomic mixture confined in an optical dipole trap. We theoretically analyze the experimental spectrum to obtain an accurate description of the long-range potential of the ground state molecule. Based on the measured binding energies, we arrive at an improved value of the interspecies $s$-wave scattering length $a_{s0}=30$ $a_0$. Employing coherent two-photon spectroscopy we also …
We present measurements of the pulse length of ultracold electron bunches generated by near-threshold two-photon photoionization of a laser-cooled gas. The pulse length has been measured using a resonant $3$ GHz deflecting cavity in TM$_{110}$ mode. We have measured the pulse length in three ionization regimes. The first is direct two-photon photoionization using only a $480$ nm femtosecond laser pulse, which results in short ($\sim 15$ ps) but hot ($\sim 10^{4}$ K) electron bunches. The second regime is just-above-threshold femtosecond photoionization employing the combination of a continuous…
Photoassociation of two ultracold rubidium atoms and the subsequent formation of stable molecules in the singlet ground and lowest triplet states is investigated theoretically. The method employs laser pulses inducing transitions via excited states correlated to the $5S+5P_{1/2}$ asymptote. Weakly bound molecules in the singlet ground or lowest triplet state can be created by a single pulse while the formation of more deeply bound molecules requires a two-color pump-dump scenario. More deeply bound molecules in the singlet ground or lowest triplet state can be produced only if efficient mechan…
We study the non-linear interaction of a cold sample of strontium-88 atoms coupled to a single mode of a low finesse optical cavity in the so-called bad cavity limit and investigate the implications for applications to laser stabilization. The atoms are probed on the weak inter-combination line $\lvert 5s^{2} \, ^1 \textrm{S}_0 \rangle \,-\, \lvert 5s5p \, ^3 \textrm{P}_1 \rangle$ at 689 nm in a strongly saturated regime. Our measured observables include the atomic induced phase shift and absorption of the light field transmitted through the cavity represented by the complex cavity transmissio…
We study Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of a cascade three-level atom involving 80$D_{5/2}$ state in a strong interaction regime employing a cesium ultracold cloud. In our experiment, a strong coupling laser couples 6$P_{3/2}$ to 80$D_{5/2}$ transition, while a weak probe, driving 6$S_{1/2}$ to 6$P_{3/2}$ transition, probes the coupling induced EIT signal. At the two-photon resonance, we observe that the EIT transmission decreases slowly with time, which is a signature of interaction induced metastability. The dephasing rate $γ_{\rm OD}$ is extracted with optical depth …
We study the long-range interaction of a single ion with a highly excited ultracold Rydberg atom and report on the direct observation of ion-induced Rydberg excitation blockade mediated over tens of micrometer distances. Our hybrid ion-atom system is directly produced from an ultracold atomic ensemble via near-threshold photo-ionization of a single Rydberg excitation, employing a two-photon scheme which is specifically suited for generating a very low-energy ion. The ion's motion is precisely controlled by small electric fields, which allows us to analyze the blockade mechanism for a range of …
Ionic clocks exhibit as the most promising candidates for the frequency standards. Recent investigations show the profound advantages of interrogating two laser beams with different frequencies in developing the frequency standards. Here we present a scheme of a two-photon mechanism to calculate the dynamic polarizabilities for the clock states, 6$^2$S$_{\frac{1}{2}}$ and 5$^2$D$_{\frac{3}{2}, \frac{5}{2}}$, of Ba$^+$ by employing relativistic coupled-cluster method. We illustrate the Stark-shift cancellation between these clock states at the two-photon magic wavelengths. These magic wavelengt…
