One of the classical results concerning quantum channels is the characterization of entanglement-breaking channels [M. Horodecki et al., Rev. Math. Phys 15, 629 (2003)]. We address the question whether there exists a similar characterization on the level of quantum correlations which may go beyond entanglement. The answer is fully affirmative in the case of breaking quantum correlations down to the, so called, CQ (Classical-Quantum) type, and the corresponding channels turn out to be measurement maps, while it is no longer true in the CC (Classical-Classical) case. The study of the latter reveals an unexpected link between quantum state and local correlation broadcasting and finite Markov chains. We present a possibility of broadcasting via non von Neumann measurements, which relies on the Perron-Frobenius Theorem. Surprisingly, this is not the typical generalized C-NOT gate scenario, appearing naturally in this context.
Symmetries of both closed and open-system dynamics imply many significant constraints. These generally have instantiations in both classical and quantum dynamics (Noether's theorem, for instance, applies to both sorts of dynamics). We here provide an example of such a constraint which has no counterpart for a classical system, that is, a uniquely quantum consequence of symmetric dynamics. Specifically, we demonstrate the impossibility of broadcasting asymmetry (symmetry-breaking) relative to a continuous symmetry group, for bounded-size quantum systems. The no-go theorem states that if two ini…
We investigate entanglement breaking times of Markovian evolutions in discrete and continuous time. In continuous time, we characterize which Markovian evolutions are eventually entanglement breaking, that is, evolutions for which there is a finite time after which any entanglement initially present has been destroyed by the noisy evolution. In the discrete time framework, we consider the entanglement breaking index, that is, the number of times a quantum channel has to be composed with itself before it becomes entanglement breaking. The PPT-square conjecture is that every PPT quantum channel …
We study the classical, classical-quantum, and quantum parts of conditional mutual information in the ``system-environment-ancilla'' setting of open quantum systems. We perform the separation of conditional mutual information by generalizing the classification of correlations of quantum states. The condition for identifying the classical part of conditional mutual information is given by adapting the no-local-broadcasting theorem to this setting, while the condition for classical-quantum part of conditional mutual information is obtained by considering the multipartite quantum discord and the …
We introduce quantum Markov categories as a structure that refines and extends a synthetic approach to probability theory and information theory so that it includes quantum probability and quantum information theory. In this broader context, we analyze three successively more general notions of reversibility and statistical inference: ordinary inverses, disintegrations, and Bayesian inverses. We prove that each one is a strictly special instance of the latter for certain subcategories, providing a categorical foundation for Bayesian inversion as a generalization of reversing a process. We unif…
The breaking of the continuous time-translation symmetry manifests, in Markovian open quantum systems, through the emergence of non-stationary dynamical phases. Systems that display nonequilibrium transitions into these phases are referred to as time-crystals, and they can be realized, for example, in many-body systems governed by collective dissipation and long-ranged interactions. Here, we provide a complete analytical characterization of a boundary time-crystal phase transition. This involves exact expressions for the order parameter and for the dynamics of quantum fluctuations, which, in t…
Capacities of quantum channels and decoherence times both quantify the extent to which quantum information can withstand degradation by interactions with its environment. However, calculating capacities directly is known to be intractable in general. Much recent work has focused on upper bounding certain capacities in terms of more tractable quantities such as specific norms from operator theory. In the meantime, there has also been substantial recent progress on estimating decoherence times with techniques from analysis and geometry, even though many hard questions remain open. In this articl…
Einstein-Smoluchowski diffusion, damped harmonic oscillations, and spatial decoherence are special cases of an elegant class of Markovian quantum Brownian motion models that is invariant under linear symplectic transformations. Here we prove that for each member of this class there is a preferred timescale such that the dynamics, considered stroboscopically, can be rewritten exactly as unitary evolution interrupted periodically by an entanglement-breaking measurement with respect to a fixed overcomplete set of pure Gaussian states. This is relevant to the continuing search for the best way to …
The temporal evolution of entanglement between a noisy system and an ancillary system is analyzed in the context of continuous time open quantum system dynamics. Focusing on a couple of analytically solvable models for qubit systems, we study how Markovian and non-Markovian characteristics influence the problem, discussing in particular their associated entanglement-breaking regimes. These performances are compared with those one could achieve when the environment of the system is forced to return to its input configuration via periodic instantaneous resetting procedures.
The effect of PT-symmetry breaking in coupled systems with balanced gain and loss has recently attracted considerable attention and has been demonstrated in various photonic, electrical and mechanical systems in the classical regime. Here we generalize the definition of PT symmetry to finite-dimensional open quantum systems, which are described by a Markovian master equation. Specifically, we show that the invariance of this master equation under a certain symmetry transformation implies the existence of stationary states with preserved and broken parity symmetry. As the dimension of the Hilbe…
We point out that the quantum dynamical map of an open quantum system can be generated by an effective Liouville operator. The effective Liouville shows the dynamical breaking of time reversibility. This breaking of reversibility is expressed by the effective Liouville's discrete spectrum having negative imaginary parts. This generated dynamics of open quantum systems is capable of memory effects described by a frequency dependence of the spectrum. When memory effects can be neglected or smoothed out, the effective Liouville generates the well known semi-group dynamics of open systems in the M…

The random magnetic field produced by nuclear spins has long been viewed as the dominating source of decoherence in the quantum-dot based spins. Here we obtain in both exact and analytical manner the dynamics of spin qubits coupled to nuclear spin environments via the hyperfine interaction, going beyond the weak system-bath interaction and Markovian approximation. We predict that the detailed-balance breaking produced by chemical potential gradient in nuclear baths leads to the rapid oscillations of populations, quantum coherence and entanglement, which are absent in the conventional case (i.e…
