Kaon decays have played a key role in the construction of the Standard Model and continue to be an important testing ground of the electroweak flavour theory. They can provide new signals of CP-violation phenomena and, perhaps, a window into physics beyond the Standard Model. The interplay of long-distance QCD effects in strangeness-changing transitions can be analyzed, combining the short-distance Operator Product Expansion with Chiral Perturbation Theory techniques. A brief overview is presented, focusing on a few selected decay modes. A more detailed and comprehensive review can be found in arXiv:1107.6001.

The present status of Kaon physics is summarized from a theory point of view. Focus is laid on $ΔS=2$, $ΔS=1$ as well as on rare Kaon decays, where progress has been made for instance in the case of $\varepsilon_K$ and $K_S\to μ^+μ^-$. Furthermore, several New Physics scenarios are discussed in the context of rare Kaon decays and other Kaon observables.
The theory of rare $K$ decays is reviewed, emphasizing short-distance processes and the prospects to probe the physics of flavour. A brief overview of the subject is presented, along with a more detailed discussion of the theory of $K\toπν\barν$ decays.
In this overview, I discuss some of the open issues in Kaon physics. After briefly touching on lattice calculations of Kaon dynamics and tests of CPT, my main focus of attention is on epsilon prime over epsilon and on constraints on the CKM model. The impact of rare K- decays and of experiments with B-mesons for addressing the issue of CP-violation is also discussed. The importance of looking for signals of flavor-conserving CP violating phases is emphasized.
After a brief history of the insights gained from Kaon physics, the potential of Kaon decays for probing lepton number violation is discussed. Present tests of CTP and of Quantum Mechanics in the neutral Kaon sector are then reviewed and the potential of the Frascati $Φ$ factory for doing incisive tests in this area is emphasized. The rest of this overview focuses on CP violating effects in the Kaon system. Although present observations of CP violation are perfectly consistent with the CKM model, we emphasize the theoretical and experimental difficulties which must be faced to establish this c…

We present a brief overview of rare K decays, emphasizing the different role of Standard Model and possible New Physics contributions in various channels.
Most of the analytic approaches which are used at present to understand Kaon decays, get their inspiration from QCD in the limit of a large number of colours $N_c$. After a general overview, we illustrate this with a recent application to the evaluation of the process $K_L\raμ^+ μ^-$ in the Standard Model.
An overview of KAON 99 with commentary is presented. Emphasis is placed on the state of CKM mixing and CP violation. The Jarlskog invariant, J_{CP}, is shown to provide a useful quantitative comparison of K and B phenomenology. The potential of future rare and ``forbidden'' decay experiments to probe O(3000 TeV) ``New Physics'' is also described.
Despite not being designed for it, the LHCb experiment has given world-leading contributions in kaon and hyperon physics. In this contribution I review the prospects for kaon physics at LHCb exploiting the already acquired data and the current and future Upgrade scenarios.
A comprehensive overview of kaon decays is presented. The Standard Model predictions are discussed in detail, covering both the underlying short-distance electroweak dynamics and the important interplay of QCD at long distances. Chiral perturbation theory provides a universal framework for treating leptonic, semileptonic and nonleptonic decays including rare and radiative modes. All allowed decay modes with branching ratios of at least 10^(-11) are analyzed. Some decays with even smaller rates are also included. Decays that are strictly forbidden in the Standard Model are not considered in thi…
A short overview of theoretical predictions for various kaon decays is presented. Particular attention is devoted to pure and radiative nonleptonic decays in the framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory. The relevance of KLOE's future results to improve our knowledge of kaon physics and more generally of the Standard Model at low energy is also emphasized.
A short review of recent results and future prospects in kaon physics is presented. Recent measurements performed at the NA48, NA62, KLOE and KTeV experiments on CP and Lepton Flavour violation and rare decays will be summarised, together with measurements of CKM elements and Chiral Perturbation Theory tests.
During the recent years experiments with neutral kaons have yielded remarkably sensitive results which are pertinent to such fundamental phenomena as CPT invariance (protecting causality), time-reversal invariance violation, coherence of wave functions, and entanglement of kaons in pair states. We describe the phenomenological developments and the theoretical conclusions drawn from the experimental material. An outlook to future experimentation is indicated. An overview of formal similarities in fields outside neutral kaons is included.
These lectures are an introduction to the subject of chiral effective Lagrangians of the Standard Model and their applications, mostly in the sector of non--leptonic kaon decays, with special emphasis on CP--violation. The first lecture gives an introduction to the phenomenological description of the $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ system and $K\ra ππ$ decays. In the second lecture I give an overview of the basic ideas behind the chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) --approach to hadron dynamics at low energies. The study of the weak interactions of $K$--particles within the framework of $χ$PT is the subject of…
Owing to the strong suppression of flavour-changing neutral-current transitions in the Standard Model, rare kaon decays constitute a superb tool to constrain hypothetical new-physics interactions. At the same time, they provide many interesting tests of the Standard Model itself, being sensitive both to short-distance electroweak scales and to the long-distance QCD dynamics. A brief overview of the current status is presented. The Standard Model prediction for the direct CP-violating ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ is also discussed.
We present a comprehensive analysis of low-energy signals of hypothetical scalar leptoquark interactions in lepton and kaon transitions. We derive the most general effective four-fermion Lagrangian induced by tree-level scalar leptoquark exchange and identify the Wilson coefficients predicted by the five possible types of scalar leptoquarks. The current constraints on the leptoquark Yukawa couplings arising from lepton and kaon processes are worked out, including also loop-induced transitions with only leptons (or quarks) as external states. In the presence of scalar leptoquark interactions, w…
We review the current status of the field of rare kaon decays. The study of rare kaon decays has played a key role in the development of the standard model, and the field continues to have significant impact. The two areas of greatest import are the search for physics beyond the standard model and the determination of fundamental standard-model parameters. Due to the exquisite sensitivity of rare kaon decay experiments, searches for new physics can probe very high mass scales. Studies of the k->pnn modes in particular, where the first event has recently been seen, will permit tests of the stan…
CP violation is an important tool to test the Standard Model and his extensions. We describe kaon physics observables testing CP violation and more in general short distance physics. Standard lattice calculations in kaon physics are based on the evaluation of matrix elements of local operators between two single-hadron states or a single-hadron state and the vacuum. Recent progress in lattice QCD has gone beyond these standard observables. I will review the status and prospects of lattice kaon physics with an emphasis on non-leptonic $K\toππ$ decay and long-distance processes including $K^0$-$\overline{K^0}$ mixing and rare kaon decays.
Recent results from the LHC's first run have revealed intriguing departures from lepton flavour universality in the semi-leptonic decays of $B$-mesons. We discuss the complementary role that rare kaon decays can provide in testing new physics explanations of these flavour anomalies. In the framework of minimal flavour violation, we relate the chiral low-energy constants involved in $K\toπ\ell\ell'$ and $K\to\ell\ell'$ ($\ell = μ\mbox{ or } e$) with the new physics Wilson coefficients of the $b\to s$ effective Hamiltonian. We comment on the determination of these low-energy constants at NA62 an…
We study opportunities for future high-precision experiments in kaon physics using a high-intensity proton driver, which could be part of the front-end of a muon storage ring complex. We discuss in particular the rare decays $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0e^+e^-$, and lepton-flavour violating modes such as $K_L\toμe$ and $K\toπμe$. The outstanding physics potential and long-term interest of these modes is emphasized. We review status and prospects of current and planned experiments for the processes under consideration, and indicate possible improvements and strategies towards…
The latest lattice results on kaon decays and mixing are reviewed. The discussion is focused on recent theoretical progress and new numerical calculations which appeared after Kaon 1999.
I review lattice quantum chromodynamics as relevant to the kaon system. Topics covered include the pseudoscalar masses and decay constants, the chiral effective lagrangian, $f_K/f_π$, semi-leptonic kaon decay form factors, and the neutral kaon oscillation parameter $B_K$.
In this talk I review some topics related to flavor physics in kaon decays with emphasis on the roles which kaon decays can play in the determinations of hadronic matrix elements, the CKM parameters and new physics beyond the Standard Model.
We review a novel model-independent approach to the analysis of new-physics effects in the $s\to u\ell^-\barν$ transitions. We apply it to (semi)leptonic kaon decays and study their complementarity with pion and hyperon $β$ decays or with collider searches of new physics.
New physics contributions to the $Z$ penguin are revisited in the light of the recently-reported discrepancy of the direct CP violation in $K\toππ$. Interference effects between the standard model and new physics contributions to $ΔS = 2$ observables are taken into account. Although the effects are overlooked in the literature, they make experimental bounds significantly severer. It is shown that the new physics contributions must be tuned to enhance $\mathcal{B}(K_L \to π^{0} ν\barν)$, if the discrepancy of the direct CP violation is explained with satisfying the experimental constraints. The…
We investigate the potential of rare hyperon decays to probe the short distance structure in the $s\to dν\barν$ and $s\to d\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions. Hyperon decays into neutrinos ($B_1\to B_2ν\barν$) can be reliably predicted by using form factors determined in baryon chiral perturbation theory. Their decay rates are sensitive to different short-distance operators, as compared to their kaon counterparts, and the corresponding branching fractions are in the range of $10^{-14}\sim10^{-13}$ in the standard model. In the context of the low-energy effective theory, we find that the anticipated BES…
This talk is an overview of Chiral Perturbation Theory for Kaon physics as far as not covered by other speakers. It includes a short introduction to the strengths and weaknesses of Chiral Perturbation Theory and its applications to semileptonic Kaon decays and $K\toππ(π)$.
If dark photons are massless, they couple to standard-model particles only via higher dimensional operators, while the kinetic mixing with photons, which motivates most of the current experimental searches, is absent. We consider the effect of possible flavor-changing magnetic-dipole couplings of massless dark photons in kaon physics. In particular, we study the branching ratio for the process $K^+\rightarrow π^+π^0 \bar γ$ with a simplified-model approach, assuming the chiral quark model to evaluate the hadronic matrix element. Possible effects in the $K^0$-$\bar K^0$ mixing are taken into ac…
After a brief look at CP violation in kaon decays, a short overview of CP violation in the $B$-meson system and of strategies to determine the angles of the unitarity triangles of the CKM matrix is given. Both general aspects and some recent developments are discussed, including $B_c^\pm\to D^\pm_s D$ and $B\toπK$ decays, as well as the $B_d\toπ^+π^-$, $B_s\to K^+K^-$ system.
The latest search for the rare kaon decay $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ by the NA62 experiment has produced evidence for it with a branching fraction consistent with the prediction of the standard model. The new result implies that in this decay, with the $ν\barν$ pair appearing as missing energy ($\not\!\!E$), the room for possible new physics is no longer sizable and that therefore its contributions to underlying four-particle $s\to d\!\not\!\!E$ operators with parity-even $ds$ quark bilinears have become significantly constrained. Nevertheless, we point out that appreciable manifestations from beyond t…
We introduce and discuss basic topics in the theory of kaons and charmed particles. In the first part, theoretical methods in weak decays such as operator product expansion, renormalization group and the construction of effective Hamiltonians are presented, along with an elementary account of chiral perturbation theory. The second part describes the phenomenology of the neutral kaon system, CP violation, $\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, rare kaon decays ($K\toπν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0 e^+e^-$, $K_L\toμ^+μ^-$), and some examples of flavour physics in the charm sector.
We present an overview of searches fo violation of lepton flavor universality with focus on low energy precision probes using pions, kaons, tau leptons, and nuclear beta decays. The current experimental results are reviewed, the theoretical status within the context of the Standard Model is summarized, and future prospects (both experimental and theoretical) are discussed. We review the implications of these measurements for physics beyond the Standard Model by performing a global model-independent fit to modified $W$ couplings to leptons and four-fermion operators. We also discuss new physics…
A brief survey of applications of chiral perturbation theory to both semileptonic and nonleptonic kaon decays is presented. Special emphasis is given to recent theoretical advances related to semileptonic decays, in particular pion pion scattering and Ke4 decays. The systematic approach for including isospin violation and electromagnetic corrections in semileptonic decays is discussed for Kl3 decays.
New physics can possibly emerge in the B decays into wrong-sign kaons for which the standard model contributions are extremely suppressed. We analyze two-body decays of $\bar{B}^0$ and $B^-$ mesons involving the $b\to dd\bar{s}$ ($ΔS=-1$) and $b\to ss\bar{d}$ ($ΔS=+2$) transitions in a model independent way, and examine various wrong-sign kaon signals which are expected to be observed in the future $B$ experiments. Our analysis shows that it would be possible to identify the origin of new physics through the combined analysis of several B decay modes involving one or two wrong-sign $K^*$'s.
I discuss the progress in the use of analytic techniques for low energy QCD, in particular as applied to kaon physics. These methods are becoming increasingly powerful and we have gained a good deal of control over the difficult hadronic interactions. There are continuing developments, and I speculate on the ways that these techniques may become yet more sophisticated in the future.
We review recent progress in calculating kaon spectrum, pseudoscalar meson decay constants, $B_K$, $ε'/ε$, $K\to ππ$ matrix elements, kaon semileptonic form factors, and moments of kaon distribution amplitudes on the lattice. We also address the issue of how best to improve the staggered fermion formulation for the action and operators.
An overview is presented of the talks in the working group on Goldstone Bosons. Topics touched on are CP-violation in the Kaon system, rare Kaon decays, $ππ$-scattering, $ϕ$-meson decays, scalar mesons, form-factors and polarizabilities, $η$-decays, chiral symmetry breaking, connections with QCD at short-distances and effective theories for electroweak physics.
New precise data in B physics and theoretical developments in K physics lead us to reconsider the weak K^0-\bar{K}^0 transition from a large-N_c viewpoint, N_c being the number of colors. In this framework, we infer an upper limit on \hat{B}_K and the Kaon indirect CP violation.
It is possible that the low-energy effects of physics beyond the standard model can be parametrized mainly by anomalous couplings of quarks to the W boson. Such couplings can generate potentially significant contributions to various transitions that can be probed by current and future experiments. This work explores constraints on anomalous charm-W couplings from a number of CP-conserving and -violating processes involving the kaon and other flavored hadrons.
Recent results and future prospects of the particle physics experiments with neutral and charged K-meson (kaon) decays are reviewed. Topics include CP violation, rare decays, leptons in kaon decays, tests of CPT and quantum mechanics, radiative decays, hadrons in kaon decays, basic observables, Vus and CKM unitarity, and exotic searches. Experimental techniques developed for the kaon decay experiments are discussed.
Rare Kaon decays and CP violation are important tools to test the Standard Model and its extensions. We describe kaon physics observables testing CP violation and more generally short distance physics. The rare kaon decay $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ is an ideal process in which to search for signs of new physics and is the primary goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN. In this paper we report on a lattice QCD calculation of the long-distance contribution to the $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ decay amplitude at the near-physical pion mass $m_π=170$ MeV. The calculations are however, performed on a coarse lattice and hence with a lighter charm quark mass ($m_c^{\bar{\mathrm{MS}}}(\mbox{3 GeV})=750$ MeV) than the physical one. The main aims of this study are two-fold. Firstly we study the momentum dependence of the amp…
In this short presentation I emphasize the increased importance of kaon flavour physics in the search for new physics (NP) that we should witness in the rest of this decade and in the next decade. The main actors will be the branching ratios for the rare decays $K^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_{L}\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν$, to be measured by NA62 and KOTO, and their correlations with the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ on which recently progress by lattice QCD and large $N$ dual QCD approach has been made implying a new flavour anomaly. Further correlations of $K^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν$, $K_{L}\rig…
Recent anomalies in the decays of $B$ mesons and the Higgs boson provide hints towards lepton flavor (universality) violating physics beyond the Standard Model. We observe that four-fermion operators which can explain the $B$-physics anomalies have corresponding analogs in the kaon sector, and we analyze their impact on $K\toπ\ell \ell'$ and $K\to\ell \ell'$ decays $(\ell=μ,e)$. For these processes, we note the corresponding physics opportunities at the NA62 experiment. In particular, assuming minimal flavor violation, we comment on the required improvements in sensitivity necessary to test th…
We discuss weak kaon decays in a scenario in which the Standard Model is extended by massive sterile fermions. After revisiting the analytical expressions for leptonic and semileptonic decays we derive the expressions for decay rates with two neutrinos in the final state. By using a simple effective model with only one sterile neutrino, compatible with all current experimental bounds and general theoretical constraints, we conduct a thorough numerical analysis which reveals that the impact of the presence of massive sterile neutrinos on kaon weak decays is very small, less than $1\%$ on decay …
Kaon physics provides a unique opportunity to identify new flavour and CP violating interactions beyond the Standard Model (SM). In the SM, implied by the hierarchical structure of the CKM matrix and the GIM mechanism, flavour changing neutral current processes are most strongly suppressed in the kaon sector while the suppression is much less effective in the B meson systems. Thus their theoretical cleanness makes rare K decays, in particular the K -> pi nu anti-nu system, extremely well suited to look for deviations from their tiny SM values. Despite the increasingly stringent constraints on …
I review lattice calculations and results for hadronic parameters relevant for kaon physics, in particular the vector form factor f+(0) of semileptonic kaon decays, the ratio fK/fpi of leptonic decay constants and the kaon bag parameter BK. For each lattice calculation a colour code rating is assigned, by following a procedure which is being proposed by the Flavianet Lattice Averaging Group (FLAG), and the following final averages are obtained: f+(0)=0.962(3)(4), fK/fpi = 1.196(1)(10) and \hat BK = 0.731(7)(35). In the last part of the talk, the present status of lattice studies of non-leptoni…
This review contains an overview of strong interaction effects in weak decays starting with a historical introduction. It contains a short overview of semileptonic decays and their relevance for measuring CKM matrix elements. The main part is devoted to the theoretical calculation on nonleptonic matrix elements relevant for $K^0$-$\bar{K^0}$ mixing and $K\toππ$ decays. It concludes with a short summary of rare kaon decays.
We analyze the decays $K\toπ\ellν$ and $P\to\ellν$ ($P=K,π$, $\ell=e,\,μ$) using a low-energy Effective-Field-Theory approach to parametrize New Physics and study the complementarity with baryon $β$ decays. We then provide a road map for a global analysis of the experimental data, with all the Wilson coefficients simultaneously, and perform a fit leading to numerical bounds for them and for $V_{us}$. A prominent result of our analysis is a reinterpretation of the well-known $V_{ud}-V_{us}$ diagram as a strong constraint on new physics. Finally, we reinterpret our bounds in terms of the $SU(2)_…
Rare Kaon decays provide sensitive probes of short distance physics. Among the most promising modes are the K+ --> pi+ nu anti-nu and K(L) --> pi0 nu anti-nu modes due to their theoretical cleanness and the dedicated experiments, NA62 and KOTO. The key to the success of New Physics searches in these modes is the precision in the standard model prediction. We review the status and the recent progress of their standard model prediction, and also discuss the predictions and New Physics sensitivities of the K(L) --> pi0 l+ l- and K(L) --> mu+ mu- decays.
