With the growing realization that current Internet protocols are reaching the limits of their senescence, a number of on-going research efforts aim to design potential next-generation Internet architectures. Although they vary in maturity and scope, in order to avoid past pitfalls, these efforts seek to treat security and privacy as fundamental requirements. Resilience to Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks that plague today's Internet is a major issue for any new architecture and deserves full attention.
In this paper, we focus on DoS in a specific candidate next-generation Internet architecture called Named-Data Networking (NDN) -- an instantiation of Information-Centric Networking approach. By stressing content dissemination, NDN appears to be attractive and viable approach to many types of current and emerging communication models. It also incorporates some basic security features that mitigate certain attacks. However, NDN's resilience to DoS attacks has not been analyzed to-date. This paper represents the first step towards assessment and possible mitigation of DoS in NDN. After identifying and analyzing several new types of attacks, it investigates their variations, effects and counter-measures. This paper also sheds some light on the long-standing debate about relative virtues of self-certifying, as opposed to human-readable, names.
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have plagued the Internet for decades, but the basic defense approaches have not fundamentally changed. Rather, the size and rate of growth in attacks have actually outpaced carriers' and DDoS mitigation services' growth, calling for new solutions that can be, partially or fully, deployed imminently and exhibit effectiveness. In this paper, we examine the basic functions in Named Data Networking (NDN), a newly proposed Internet architecture, that can address the principle weaknesses in today's IP networks. We demonstrate by a new DDoS mitigation sol…
Content-Centric Networking (CCN) is an emerging networking paradigm being considered as a possible replacement for the current IP-based host-centric Internet infrastructure. In CCN, named content becomes a first-class entity. CCN focuses on content distribution, which dominates current Internet traffic and is arguably not well served by IP. Named-Data Networking (NDN) is an example of CCN. NDN is also an active research project under the NSF Future Internet Architectures (FIA) program. FIA emphasizes security and privacy from the outset and by design. To be a viable Internet architecture, NDN …
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is one of the most prevalent attacks that an organizational network infrastructure comes across nowadays. We propose a deep learning based multi-vector DDoS detection system in a software-defined network (SDN) environment. SDN provides flexibility to program network devices for different objectives and eliminates the need for third-party vendor-specific hardware. We implement our system as a network application on top of an SDN controller. We use deep learning for feature reduction of a large set of features derived from network traffic headers. We evaluate…
Nowadays, denial of service (DoS) attacks represent a significant fraction of all attacks that take place in the Internet and their intensity is always growing. The main DoS attack methods consist of flooding their victims with bogus packets, queries or replies, so as to prevent them from fulfilling their roles. Preventing DoS attacks at network level would be simpler if end-to-end strong authentication in any packet exchange was mandatory. However, it is also likely that its mandatory adoption would introduce more harm than benefits. In this paper we present an end-point addressing scheme and…
Networks today rely on expensive and proprietary hard- ware appliances, which are deployed at fixed locations, for DDoS defense. This introduces key limitations with respect to flexibility (e.g., complex routing to get traffic to these "chokepoints") and elasticity in handling changing attack patterns. We observe an opportunity to ad- dress these limitations using new networking paradigms such as software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV). Based on this observation, we design and implement of Bohatei, an elastic and flexible DDoS defense system. In designing B…

DoS and DDoS attacks have been growing in size and number over the last decade and existing solutions to mitigate these attacks are in general inefficient. Compared to other types of malicious cyber attacks, DoS and DDoS attacks are particularly more challenging to combat. With their ability to mask themselves as legitimate traffic, developing methods to detect these types of attacks on a packet or flow level, has proven to be a difficult task. In this paper, we explore the potential of Variational Autoencoders to serve as a component within an intelligent security solution that differentiates…
The current paper addresses relevant network security vulnerabilities introduced by network devices within the emerging paradigm of Internet of Things (IoT) as well as the urgent need to mitigate the negative effects of some types of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that try to explore those security weaknesses. We design and implement a Software-Defined Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that reactively impairs the attacks at its origin, ensuring the normal operation of the network infrastructure. Our proposal includes an IDS that automatically detects several DDoS attacks, and then…
Line Speed Publish/Subscribe Inter-networking (LIPSIN) is one of the proposed forwarding mechanisms in Information Centric Networking (ICN). It is a stateless source-routing approach based on Bloom filters. However, it has been shown that LIPSIN is vulnerable to brute-force attacks which may lead to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and unsolicited messages. In this work, we propose a new forwarding approach that maintains the advantages of Bloom filter based forwarding while allowing forwarding nodes to statelessly verify if packets have been previously authorized, thus preventing …
Slow-running attacks against network applications are often not easy to detect, as the attackers behave according to the specification. The servers of many network applications are not prepared for such attacks, either due to missing countermeasures or because their default configurations ignores such attacks. The pressure to secure network services against such attacks is shifting more and more from the service operators to the network operators of the servers under attack. Recent technologies such as software-defined networking offer the flexibility and extensibility to analyze and influence…
Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks exhaust resources, leaving a server unavailable to legitimate clients. The Domain Name System (DNS) is a frequent target of DDoS attacks. Since DNS is a critical infrastructure service, protecting it from DoS is imperative. Many prior approaches have focused on specific filters or anti-spoofing techniques to protect generic services. DNS root nameservers are more challenging to protect, since they use fixed IP addresses, serve very diverse clients and requests, receive predominantly UDP traffic that can be spoofed, and must guarantee high quality of…
To effectively tackle the security threats towards the Internet of things, we propose a SOM-based DDoS defense mechanism using software-defined networking (SDN) in this paper. The main idea of the mechanism is to deploy a SDN-based gateway to protect the device services in the Internet of things. The gateway provides DDoS defense mechanism based on SOM neural network. By means of SOM-based DDoS defense mechanism, the gateway can effectively identify the malicious sensing devices in the IoT, and automatically block those malicious devices after detecting them, so that it can effectively enforce…
Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks represent a persistent threat to modern telecommunications networks: detecting and counteracting them is still a crucial unresolved challenge for network operators. DDoS attack detection is usually carried out in one or more central nodes that collect significant amounts of monitoring data from networking devices, potentially creating issues related to network overload or delay in detection. The dawn of programmable data planes in Software-Defined Networks can help mitigate this issue, opening the door to the detection of DDoS attacks directly in th…
Ethernet is the most promising solution to reduce complexity and enhance the bandwidth in the next generation in-car networks. Dedicated Ethernet protocols enable the real-time aspects in such networks. One promising candidate is the IEEE 802.1Q Time-Sensitive Networking protocol suite. Common Ethernet technologies, however, increases the vulnerability of the car infrastructure as they widen the attack surface for many components. In this paper proposes an IEEE 802.1Qci based algorithm that on the one hand, protects against DoS attacks by metering incoming Ethernet frames. On the other hand, i…
Information Centric Networks (ICNs) have emerged in recent years as a new networking paradigm for the next-generation Internet. The primary goal of these networks is to provide effective mechanisms for content distribution and retrieval based on in-network content caching. The design of different ICN architectures addressed many of the security issues found in the traditional Internet. Therefore, allowing for a secure, reliable, and scalable communication over the Internet. However, recent research studies showed that these architectures are vulnerable to different types of DDoS attacks. In th…

The possibility of programming the control and data planes, enabled by the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm, represents a fertile ground on top of which novel operation and management mechanisms can be fully explored, being Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack detection based on machine learning techniques the focus of this work. To carry out the detection, this paper proposes ORACLE: cOllaboRation of dAta and Control pLanEs to detect DDoS attacks, an architecture that promotes the coordination of control and data planes to detect network attacks. As its first contribution, th…
Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new networking architecture which aims to provide better decoupling between network control (control plane) and data forwarding functionalities (data plane). This separation introduces several benefits, such as a directly programmable and (virtually) centralized network control. However, researchers showed that the required communication channel between the control and data plane of SDN creates a potential bottleneck in the system, introducing new vulnerabilities. Indeed, this behavior could be exploited to mount powerful attacks, such as the control plan…
Software-defined networking (SDN) is a promising technology to overcome many challenges in wireless sensor networks (WSN), particularly with respect to flexibility and reuse. Conversely, the centralization and the planes' separation turn SDNs vulnerable to new security threats in the general context of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. State-of-the-art approaches to identify DDoS do not always take into consideration restrictions in typical WSNs e.g., computational complexity and power constraints, while further performance improvement is always a target. The objective of this work…
In this paper, we propose a solution to proactively mitigate Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks in 5G core network slicing using slice isolation. Network slicing is one of the key technologies that allow 5G networks to offer dedicated resources to different industries (services). However, a Distributed Denial-of-Service attack could severely impact the performance and availability of the slices as they could share the same physical resources in a multi-tenant virtualized networking infrastructure. Slice isolation is an essential requirement for 5G network slicing. In this paper, we use netw…
The Internet Threat Monitoring (ITM) is an efficient monitoring system used globally to measure, detect, characterize and track threats such as denial of service (DoS) and distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and worms. . To block the monitoring system in the internet the attackers are targeted the ITM system. In this paper we address the flooding attack of DDoS against ITM monitors to exhaust the network resources, such as bandwidth, computing power, or operating system data structures by sending the malicious traffic. We propose an information-theoretic frame work that models the flo…
Denial of service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks continue to threaten the reliability of networking systems. Previous approaches for protecting networks from DoS attacks are reactive in that they wait for an attack to be launched before taking appropriate measures to protect the network. This leaves the door open for other attacks that use more sophisticated methods to mask their traffic. A secure overlay services (SOS) architecture has been proposed to provide reliable communication between clients and a target under DoS attacks. The SOS architecture employs a set of o…
Cooperative networking brings performance improvement to most of the issues in wireless networks, such as fading or delay due to slow stations. However, due to cooperation when data is relayed via other nodes, there network is more prone to attacks. Since, channel access is very important for cooperation, most of the attacks happens at MAC. One of the most critical attack is denial of service, which is reason of cooperation failure. Therefore, the cooperative network as well as simple wireless LAN must be defensive against DOS attacks. In this article we analyzed all possible of DoS attacks th…
The way in which addressing and forwarding are implemented in the Internet constitutes one of its biggest privacy and security challenges. The fact that source addresses in Internet datagrams cannot be trusted makes the IP Internet inherently vulnerable to DoS and DDoS attacks. The Internet forwarding plane is open to attacks to the privacy of datagram sources, because source addresses in Internet datagrams have global scope. The fact an Internet datagrams are forwarded based solely on the destination addresses stated in datagram headers and the next hops stored in the forwarding information b…

Software Defined Networking (SDN) enables flexible and scalable network control and management. However, it also introduces new vulnerabilities that can be exploited by attackers. In particular, low-rate and slow or stealthy Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks are recently attracting attention from researchers because of their detection challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel machine learning based defense framework named Q-MIND, to effectively detect and mitigate stealthy DoS attacks in SDN-based networks. We first analyze the adversary model of stealthy DoS attacks, the related vulnerabili…
Named Data Networking (NDN) is a prominent realization of the vision of Information-Centric Networking. The NDN architecture adopts name-based routing and location-independent data retrieval. Among other important features, NDN integrates security mechanisms and focuses on protecting the content rather than the communications channels. Along with a new architecture come new threats and NDN is no exception. NDN is a potential target for new network attacks such as Interest Flooding Attacks (IFAs). Attackers take advantage of IFA to launch (D)DoS attacks in NDN. Many IFA detection and mitigation…
As in-vehicle communication becomes more complex, the automotive community is exploring various architectural options such as centralized and zonal architectures for their numerous benefits. Zonal architecture reduces the wiring cost by physically locating related operations and ECUs near their intended functions and the number of physical ECUs through function consolidation. Centralized architectures consolidate the number of ECUs into few, powerful compute units. Common characteristics of these architectures include the need for high-bandwidth communication and security, which have been elus…
Destination IP prefix-based routing protocols are core to Internet routing today. Internet autonomous systems (AS) possess fixed IP prefixes, while packets carry the intended destination AS's prefix in their headers, in clear text. As a result, network communications can be easily identified using IP addresses and become targets of a wide variety of attacks, such as DNS/IP filtering, distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, etc. In this work, we explore an alternative network architecture that fundamentally removes such vulnerabilities by disassociating t…
