A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) is one of the four large experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and it is dedicated to the study of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, with the goal of investigating the properties of the high-density state of QCD matter produced in these collisions.
The study of D meson production azimuthal anisotropy and the measurement of their elliptic flow (v2) can provide insight on the degree of thermalisation of charm quarks in the medium and on the charm hadronization mechanism.
We present the measurement of the D+ and D0 meson v2 in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(sNN)=2.76 TeV at the LHC with ALICE. We discuss the details of the analysis and we show the results obtained from data samples collected in 2011.
Measurement of the nuclear modification factor of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in Pb-Pb collisions at {\surd}sNN = 2.76 TeV with ALICE at the LHC
We report on forward-rapidity charmonium production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, as measured by ALICE at the LHC. Differential cross sections for both J/ψ and ψ(2S) are presented as a function of the charmonium transverse momentum and rapidity. Results are compared to similar measurements performed by LHCb, to lower energy measurements and to state of the art model calculations.
In this contribution, the nuclear modification factor and azimuthal anisotropy of prompt charm mesons and baryons in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV by the ALICE Collaboration are presented. Heavy quarks are a very suitable probe to investigate the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions, since they are mainly produced in hard-scattering processes and hence in shorter timescales compared to the QGP. Measurements of charm-hadron production in nucleus-nucleus collisions are therefore useful to study the properties of the in-medium charm-quark energy loss via…
We present recent result on strange and non-strange D-meson production measured with ALICE in Pb--Pb collisions at the LHC. In addition, the measurements of the $Λ_{\rm c}^+$-baryon production and of the $Λ_{\rm c}^+/{\rm D^0}$ ratio in pp, p--Pb, and, for the first time ever, Pb--Pb collisions are reported.
The ALICE experiment is dedicated to the study of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), a state of matter where, due to high temperature and density, quarks and gluons are deconfined. One of the probes studied to investigate this state of matter is the production of charmonium states, such as the J/$ψ$ and the $ψ$(2S). Indeed, the presence of the QGP is expected to modify the charmonium production yields, due to a balance between the color screening of the charm quark potential and a recombination mechanism. A suppression of the production yields in heavy ion collisions with respect to pp collisions s…
Studies on the production of open charm hadrons are of paramount importance to investigate the charm-quark hadronisation mechanisms at the LHC, particularly through the evolution of the production ratio between different charm-hadron species. Measurements performed in pp and p--Pb collisions at the LHC have revealed unexpected features, qualitatively similar to what observed in larger systems and, in the charm sector, not in line with the expectations based on previous measurements from $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ colliders and in ep collisions. These results suggest that charm fragmentation fractions mi…
Recent measurements of charm-baryon production at midrapidity by the ALICE collaboration show baryon-to-meson yield ratios significantly higher than those measured in $\rm e^+e^-$ collisions, suggesting that the charm fragmentations are not universal across different collisions systems. Thus, measurements of charm-baryon production are crucial to study the charm quark hadronisation in proton--proton (pp) collisions. In proton--lead (p--Pb) collisions, the measurements of charm baryons provide important information about cold nuclear matter effects and help to understand how the possible presen…
The production of charmonium states, J/$ψ$ and $ψ$(2S), in heavy-ion collisions, is an important probe to investigate the formation of a plasma of quarks and gluons (QGP). In a hot and deconfined medium, quarkonium production is, indeed, expected to be significantly modified, with respect to the pp yields, due to a balance of color screening and charm-quark recombination mechanisms. The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC has measured charmonium production in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{\rm NN} =$ 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. The nuclear modification factor of inclusive J/$ψ$, evaluated at forward ($-4<η<…
Measurements of heavy (charm and beauty) quarks provide useful insights into the properties of the quark--gluon plasma. The good particle identification capabilities of ALICE make a measurement based on the electrons from semi-leptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons feasible. This approach makes use of the large branching ratios ($\approx 10-20\%$) of heavy--flavour hadrons into electrons. Separation of the contribution from beauty-hadron decay electrons was achieved by utilizing the large decay length of the associated hadrons, making the investigation of beauty quarks in the medium possible…
We report on published charmonium measurements performed by ALICE, at the LHC, in Pb-Pb collisions at a center of mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$ TeV, at both mid ($|y|<0.8$) and forward ($2.5<y<4$) rapidities. The nuclear modification factor of inclusive ${\rm J}/ψ$ is presented as a function of the collision centrality and the ${\rm J}/ψ$ transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$. The variation of the ${\rm J}/ψ$ mean transverse momentum square as a function of the collision centrality is also discussed. These measurements are compared to state of the art models t…
The production of charm-hadrons at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV was recently measured by the ALICE Collaboration. The results show that the baryon-to-meson yield ratios differ from predictions where the hadronisation has been tuned to measurements obtained in $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ and ep collisions for different charm-baryon species. These observations suggest that the charm fragmentation fractions are not universal and that the baryon-to-meson ratio depends on the collision systems. The results are compared to the predictions from Monte Carlo event generators and th…
We present here recent open heavy-flavour results from the ALICE experiment, including measurements of D-meson, $\mathrm{Λ_{c}^{+}}$ baryon and $\mathrm{Ξ_c^0}$ baryon production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7~\mathrm{TeV}$ and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02~\mathrm{TeV}$.
Charmonia, bound states of charm and anti-charm quarks, represent an interesting probe for the study of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) since their production involves both hard and soft energy scales. Several effective models are available to describe the production of charmonia, but so far none have been able to describe all experimental observables simultaneously. ALICE has studied the production of charmonia in different collision systems at all available LHC energies at both mid- and forward-rapidity down to zero transverse momentum. In this contribution, different measurements performed in …
This contribution summarizes a selection of recent results from the ALICE experiment. We show the cross-section of beauty jets in pp collisions, as well as the charmed baryon-to-meson production ratios, down to unprecedentedly low momenta, at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ and 13 TeV collision energies. We present the nuclear modification of ${\rm D}^0$-jets and the $v_2$ of non-prompt ${\rm D}^0$ in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. We also discuss the implications and constraints from comparing these data to some of the most recent theoretical models.
Recent measurements of prompt charm-baryon production at midrapidity in pp and p--Pb collisions show baryon-to-meson yield ratios significantly higher than those in $\rm e^+e^-$ collisions, suggesting that the charm fragmentation is not universal across different collision systems. Thus, more precise and broader measurements of prompt charm-baryon production are crucial to study the charm quark hadronization in a partonic-rich environment like the one produced in pp collisions at the LHC energies. Prompt charm baryon-to-meson yield ratios in proton--nucleus collisions provide important informa…
In this contribution, the latest ALICE results on charmed baryon production are presented. In particular the measurements of $Λ_{\rm c}^{+}$-baryon production in pp collisions at ${\sqrt{\rm s}}$ = 5.02 TeV and in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{\rm s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV are shown and compared with previous measurements performed using pp and p-Pb data samples collected during LHC Run 1. At mid-rapidity charmed baryons are reconstructed via their hadronic decay and semileptonic decay channels, exploiting the high precision tracking, excellent vertexing and particle identification capabilities offered …
An overview of recent ${\rm D^+}$, ${\rm D^0}$, ${\rm D^{*+}}$ and ${\rm D_s^+}$ measurements performed by ALICE at central rapidity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV, as well as lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.76$ TeV, is presented. An emphasis is put on the discussion of theoretical predictions with respect to the LHC Run I data.
We present a new method for detection of multiply charmed baryons via their decays into strange baryons, using `strangeness tracking'. This method makes use of the state-of-the-art upgraded silicon detectors in ALICE during Runs 3, 4 and beyond will enable the novel possibility of tracking strange hadrons directly before they decay, leading to a very significant improvement in impact-parameter resolution. In this work, we will discuss how this new technique will be crucial to distinguish secondary strange baryons originating from charm decays from primary strange baryons. This is a particularl…
The study of heavy-flavour (charm and beauty) production is important to understand the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, since heavy quarks are produced in the initial stages of the collisions and subsequently interact with the medium throughout its evolution. In the QGP, strange quarks are expected to be abundantly produced and may recombine with charm quarks leading to an enhancement of the nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) of ${\rm D}_{\rm s}^{+}$ mesons compared to that of other charmed meson states at low and intermedia…
The large statistics accumulated during the LHC Run-1 and Run-2 have provided the unique opportunity to study the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma using rare hard probes. The ALICE Collaboration has presented new results on the jet shape observables in p--Pb and Pb--Pb collision. Using data from Run-2, the elliptic flow of open and hidden charm mesons have been measured with much better precision, confirming that charm quarks participate in the collective dynamic expansion with the medium. In p--Pb collisions the absence of jet quenching correlated with high event activity has been confirm…
The suppression of quarkonium production with respect to pp collisions is one of the most distinctive signatures of the formation of quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a hot nuclear medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. However, the suppression of heavy quarkonium production with respect to pp collisions can also take place in p-A collisions, where QGP is not expected to be created and only cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects, such as nuclear absorption, parton shadowing and parton energy loss in initial and final states occur. The study of p-A collisions is therefore important to dis…
The ALICE Collaboration measured dielectron production as a function of the invariant mass ($m_{\rm ee}$), the pair transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T,ee}$) and the pair distance of closest approach ($\rm DCA_{ee}$) in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. Prompt and non-prompt dielectron sources can be separated with the $\rm DCA_{ee}$, which will give the opportunity in heavy-ion collisions to identify thermal radiation from the medium in the intermediate-mass range dominated by contributions from open-charm and beauty hadron decays. The charm and beauty total cross sections are extracted from th…
Heavy quarks, produced in hard parton scatterings in the early stage of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, are ideal probes to investigate the properties of the Quark--Gluon Plasma (QGP) produced in such collisions. Measurements of heavy-flavour jets can provide constraints on energy-loss models. In particular, they add information on how the radiated energy is dissipated in the medium. Studies of angular correlations between heavy-flavour and charged particles allow us to characterize the heavy-quark fragmentation process and its possible modification in a hot nuclear matter environment…
Studies of open-charm hadron production in pp and \pPb collisions are performed by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC to investigate charm-quark hadronization mechanisms. Recent measurements of charm meson (${\rm D^0}$, ${\rm D^+}$, ${\rm D^+_{\rm s}}$, and ${\rm D^{*+}}$) and baryon ($Λ^+_{\rm c}$, $Ξ^{0,+}_{\rm c}$, $Σ^{0,++}_{\rm c}$, and $Ω^0_{\rm c}$) production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV and $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV allow the determination of the charm cross section and the fragmentation fractions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV with unprecedented precision. The measurements show that…
Heavy quarks, like charm and beauty, are sensitive probes to investigate the colour-deconfined medium created in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). The ALICE Collaboration measured the production of D$^{0}$, D$^{+}$, D$^{*+}$ and D$_{\mathrm{s}}^{+}$ in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm {NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The measurement of the nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm {AA}}$) provides informations on the in-medium parton energy loss. In addition, the comparison between D$_{\mathrm{s}}^{+}$ and the non-strange D-meson $R_{\rm {AA}}$ allows to investigate possible modif…
