We demonstrate excitation-manifold resolved polarisation characterisation of continuous-variable (CV) quantum states. In contrast to traditional characterisation of polarisation that is based on the Stokes parameters, we experimentally determine the Stokes vector of each excitation manifold separately. Only for states with a given photon number does the methods coincide. For states with an indeterminate photon number, for example Gaussian states, the employed method gives a richer and more accurate description. We apply the method both in theory and in experiment to some common states to demonstrate its advantages.
This paper discusses methods for the optical teleportation of continuous variable polarisation states. We show that using two pairs of entangled beams, generated using four squeezed beams, perfect teleportation of optical polarisation states can be performed. Restricting ourselves to 3 squeezed beams, we demonstrate that polarisation state teleportation can still exceed the classical limit. The 3-squeezer schemes involve either the use of quantum non-demolition measurement or biased entanglement generated from a single squeezed beam. We analyse the efficacies of these schemes in terms of fidel…
We have experimentally demonstrated the efficient creation of highly entangled bipartite continuous variable polarisation states. Exploiting an optimised scheme for the production of squeezing using the Kerr non-linearity of a glass fibre we generated polarisation squeezed pulses with a mean classical excitation in S3. Polarisation entanglement was generated by interfering two independent polarisation squeezed fields on a symmetric beam splitter. The resultant beams exhibit strong quantum noise correlations in the dark S1 - S2 polarisation plane. To verify entanglement generation, we character…
We demonstrate an implementation of quantum key distribution with continuous variables based on a go-&-return configuration over distances up to 14km. This configuration leads to self-compensation of polarisation and phase fluctuations. We observe a high degree of stability of our set-up over many hours.
We demonstrate a quantum key distribution implementation over deployed dark telecom fibers with polarisation-entangled photons generated at the O-band. One of the photons in the pairs are propagated through 10km of deployed fiber while the others are detected locally. Polarisation drifts experienced by the photons propagating through the fibers are compensated with liquid crystal variable retarders. This ensures continuous and stable QKD operation with an average QBER of 6.4% and a final key rate of 109 bits/s.
The possibility of determining the state of a quantum system after a continuous measurement of position is discussed in the framework of quantum trajectory theory. Initial lack of knowledge of the system and external noises are accounted for by considering the evolution of conditioned density matrices under a stochastic master equation. It is shown that after a finite time the state of the system is a pure state and can be inferred from the measurement record alone. The relation to emerging possibilities for the continuous experimental observation of single quanta, as for example in cavity qua…
The dielectric properties of strontium titanate (SrTiO$_3$) have previously been reported from room temperature to low temperatures with conflicting results. In this work, precision measurement of the permittivity is undertaken by simultaneously measuring transverse electric and transverse magnetic resonant modes within a single crystal. It is unequivocally shown that the permittivity is isotropic at room temperature with a permittivity of order $316.3\pm2.2$ by measuring multiple modes of different electric field polarisations. As the crystal is cooled to 5 K and undergoes well known phase tr…
We present a pilot-assisted coherent intradyne reception methodology for CV-QKD with true local oscillator. An optically phase-locked reference tone, prepared using carrier-suppressed optical single-sideband modulation, is multiplexed in polarisation and frequency to the 250 Mbaud quantum signal in order to provide optical frequency- and phase matching between quantum signal and local oscillator. Our concept allows for high symbol rates and can be operated at an extremely low excess-noise level, as validated by experimental measurements.
We propose that weak continuous probing may be exploited to determine and define quantum phases of complex many-body systems based on the measurement record alone. We test the resulting phase criterion in numerical simulations of measurements on the Bose-Hubbard model and the quantum Ising chain. This yields a phase transition point in reasonable agreement with the quantum phase transition in the ground state of the closed system in the thermodynamic limit, despite the system being highly excited through the measurement dynamics. At high measurement strengths, the system's response enters a Ze…
We classify the entanglement of two--mode Gaussian states according to their degree of total and partial mixedness. We derive exact bounds that determine maximally and minimally entangled states for fixed global and marginal purities. This characterization allows for an experimentally reliable estimate of continuous variable entanglement based on measurements of purity.
Optimized, necessary and sufficient conditions for the identification of the Schmidt number will be derived in terms of general Hermitian operators. These conditions apply to arbitrary mixed quantum states. The optimization procedure delivers equations similar to the eigenvalue problem of an operator. The properties of the solution of these equations will be studied. We solve these equations for classes of operators. The solutions will be applied to phase randomized two-mode squeezed-vacuum states in continuous variable systems.
We derive necessary conditions in terms of the variances of position and momentum linear combinations for all kinds of separability of a multi-party multi-mode continuous-variable state. Their violations can be sufficient for genuine multipartite entanglement, provided the combinations contain both conjugate variables of all modes. Hence a complete state determination, for example by detecting the entire correlation matrix of a Gaussian state, is not needed.
We experimentally demonstrate the concept of continuous variable quantum erasing. The amplitude quadrature of the signal state is labelled to another state via a quantum nondemolition interaction, leading to a large uncertainty in the determination of the phase quadrature due to the inextricable complementarity of the two observables. We show that by erasing the amplitude quadrature information we are able to recover the phase quadrature information of the signal state.
Gaussian states are the backbone of quantum information protocols with continuous variable systems, whose power relies fundamentally on the entanglement between the different modes. In the case of global pure states, knowledge of the reduced states in a given bipartition of a multipartite quantum system bears information on the entanglement in such bipartition. For Gaussian states, the reduced states are also Gaussian, so there determination requires essentially the experimental determination of their covariance matrix. Here, we develop strategies to determine the covariance matrix of an arbit…
By using the algebraic separability criterion of R. Simon, we present an explicit determination of squeezing parameters for which the P-representation condition saturates the $Sp(2,R)\otimes Sp(2,R)$ invariant separability condition for continuous variable two-party Gaussian systems. We thus give for the first time the explicit analytic formulas of squeezing parameters which establish the equivalence of the separability condition with the P-representation condition. The implications of our algebraic analysis on some of the past related works are discussed.
For a thought experiment concerning the mixing of two classical gases, Gibbs concluded that the work that can be extracted from mixing is determined by whether or not the gases can be distinguished by a semi-permeable membrane; that is, the mixing work is a discontinuous function of how similar the gases are. Here we describe an optomechanical setup that generalises Gibbs' thought experiment to partially distinguishable quantum gases. Specifically, we model the interaction between a polarising beamsplitter, that plays the role of a semi-permeable membrane, and two photon gases of non-orthogona…
We present a formally deterministic representation for quantum history theories where we obtain the probabilistic structure via a discrete contextual variable: no continuous probabilities are as such involved at the primal level -- we conceive as a history theory any theory that deals with sequential quantum measurements but remains essentially a dichotomic propositional theory. A major part of the paper consists of a concise survey of arXiv: quant-ph/0008061 and quant-ph/0008062.

We initiate the study of neural-network quantum state algorithms for analyzing continuous-variable lattice quantum systems in first quantization. A simple family of continuous-variable trial wavefunctons is introduced which naturally generalizes the restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) wavefunction introduced for analyzing quantum spin systems. By virtue of its simplicity, the same variational Monte Carlo training algorithms that have been developed for ground state determination and time evolution of spin systems have natural analogues in the continuum. We offer a proof of principle demonstrati…
We propose a measurement scheme that allows determination of even-moments of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) atom number, in a ring cavity, by continuous photodetection of an off-resonant quantized optical field. A fast cavity photocounting process limits the heating of atomic samples with a relatively small number of atoms, being convenient for BECs on a microchip scale applications. The measurement back-action introduces a counting-conditioned phase damping, suppressing the condensate typical collapse and revival dynamics.
