We analyze the light scattered by a single InAs quantum dot interacting with a resonant continuous-wave laser. High resolution spectra reveal clear distinctions between coherent and incoherent scattering, with the laser intensity spanning over four orders of magnitude. We find that the fraction of coherently scattered photons can approach unity under sufficiently weak or detuned excitation, ruling out pure dephasing as a relevant decoherence mechanism. We show how spectral diffusion shapes spectra, correlation functions, and phase-coherence, concealing the ideal radiatively-broadened two-level system described by Mollow.
We present a detailed study of a phonon-assisted incoherent excitation mechanism of single quantum dots. A spectrally-detuned laser couples to a quantum dot transition by mediation of acoustic phonons, whereby excitation efficiencies up to 20 % with respect to strictly resonant excitation can be achieved at T = 9 K. Laser frequency-dependent analysis of the quantum dot intensity distinctly maps the underlying acoustic phonon bath and shows good agreement with our polaron master equation theory. An analytical solution for the photoluminescence is introduced which predicts a broadband incoherent…
We analyze the impact of both an incoherent and a coherent continuous excitation on our proposal to generate a two-photon state from a quantum dot in a microcavity [New J. Phys. 13, 113014 (2011)]. A comparison between exact numerical results and analytical formulas provides the conditions to efficiently generate indistinguishable and simultaneous pairs of photons under both types of excitation.
Left-handedness with three zero-absorption windows tuned by the incoherent pumping field and inter-dot tunnelings in a GaAs/AlGaAs triple quantum dots system
We consider the current fluctuations in a mesoscopic circuit consisting of nodes connected by arbitrary connectors, in a setup with multiple normal or superconducting terminals. In the limit of weak superconducting proximity effect, simplified equations for the second-order cross-correlators can be derived from the general counting field theory, and the result coincides with the semiclassical principle of minimal correlations. We discuss the derivation of this result in a multi-dot case.
Semiconductor quantum dots are converging towards the demanding requirements of photonic quantum technologies. Among different systems, quantum dots with dimensions exceeding the free-exciton Bohr radius are appealing because of their high oscillator strengths. While this property has received much attention in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics, little is known about the degree of indistinguishability of single photons consecutively emitted by such dots and on the proper excitation schemes to achieve high indistinguishability. A prominent example is represented by GaAs quantum dots…
A fundamental question in quantum transport is how quantum coherence influences charge transfer through nanostructures. We address this issue for linear triple quantum dots by comparison of a Lindblad density matrix description with a Pauli rate equation approach and analyze the corresponding zero-frequency counting statistics for coherent and sequential charge tunneling, respectively. The impact of decaying coherences of the density matrix due to dephasing is also studied. Our findings reveal that the sensitivity to coherence shown by shot noise and skewness, in particular in the limit of lar…
We propose methods for realization of continuous two photon source using coherently pumped quantum dot embedded inside a photonic crystal cavity. We analyze steady state population in quantum dot energy levels and field inside the cavity mode. We find conditions for population inversion in coherently pumped and incoherently pumped quantum dot. We show that squeezing in the output for two two photon laser is not visible using coherent as well as incoherent pump. We discuss effect of phonon coupling using recently developed polaron transformed master equation at low temperatures. We also propose…
The generation of photocurrents due to coupling of electrons to both classical and quantized electromagnetic fields in thin semiconductor films is described within the framework of the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. For the coherent coupling to classical fields corresponding to single field operator averages, an effective two-time intraband self-energy is derived from a band decoupling procedure. The evaluation of coherent photogeneration is performed self-consistently with the propagation of the fields by using for the latter a transfer matrix formalism with an extinction coeffici…
We discuss the spectral lineshapes of N quantum dots in strong coupling with the single mode of a microcavity. Nontrivial features are brought by detuning the emitters or probing the direct exciton emission spectrum. We describe dark states, quantum nonlinearities, emission dips and interferences and show how these various effects may coexist, giving rise to highly peculiar lineshapes.
We investigate the competition between pair entanglement of two spin qubits in double quantum dots attached to leads with various topologies and the separate entanglement of each spin with nearby electrodes. Universal behavior of entanglement is demonstrated in dependence on the mutual interactions between the spin qubits, the coupling to their environment, temperature and magnetic field. As a consequence of quantum phase transition an abrupt switch between fully entangled and unentangled states takes place when the dots are coupled in parallel.
The linear conductance of a carbon nanotube quantum dot in the Wigner molecule regime, coupled to two scanning tunnel microscope tips is inspected. Considering the high temperature regime, the nanotube quantum dot is described by means of the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid picture. The linear conductance exhibits spatial oscillations induced by the presence of the correlated, molecular electron state. A power-law scaling of the electron density and of the conductance as a function of the interaction parameter are found. They confirm local transport as a sensitive tool to investigate the Wign…
We demonstrate off-resonant coupling between a single quantum dot and a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot or the cavity. These results are consistent with previous descriptions of off-resonant coupling as an incoherent phonon-mediated process. The extension of this phenomenon to a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity presents interesting possibilities for coherent control of this interaction by tailoring the phonon density of states.
A two quantum-dot device is coupled in parallel for studying the competition between the pseudo-spin Kondo effect and strongly hybridized molecular states. Cryogenic measurements are performed in the regime of weak coupling of the two dots to lead states under linear transport conditions. Detailed simulations verify the finding of the transition between the two different regimes.
We propose a new mode of operation of an electron pump consisting of two weakly coupled quantum dots connected to reservoirs. An electron can be transferred within the device at zero bias voltage when it is subjected to electromagnetic radiation, thereby exciting the double dot. The excited state can decay by transferring charge from one lead and to the other lead in one direction. Depending on the energies of the intermediate states in the pumping cycle, which are controlled by the gate voltages, this transport is either incoherent via well-known sequential tunneling processes, or coherent vi…
The interplay between the Kondo effect and the inter-dot magnetic interaction in a coupled-dot system is studied. An exact result for the transport properties at zero temperature is obtained by diagonalizing a cluster, composed by the double-dot and its vicinity, which is connected to leads. It is shown that the system goes continuously from the Kondo regime to an anti-ferromagnetic state as the inter-dot interaction is increased. The conductance, the charge at the dots and the spin-spin correlation are obtained as a function of the gate potential.
Manifestations of quantum coherence in the electronic conductance through nearly closed quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime are addressed. We show that quantum coherent tunneling processes explain some puzzling statistical features of the conductance peak-heights observed in recent experiments at low temperatures. We employ the constant interaction model and the random matrix theory to model the quantum dot electronic interactions and its single-particle statistical fluctuations, taking full account of the finite decay width of the quantum dot levels.
We study the dynamics of quantum coherence and quantum correlations in two semiconductor double-dot molecules separated by a distance and indirectly coupled via a transmission line resonator. Dominant dissipation processes are considered. The numerical results show the sudden death of entanglement and the robustness of quantum discord to sudden death. Furthermore, the results indicate the dephasing processes in our model can lead in the revival and decay of coherence and discord with the absence of entanglement for certain initial states. By observing the dynamics of coherence versus discord f…
Indistinguishable single photons are necessary for quantum information processing applications. Resonant or quasiresonant excitation of single quantum dots provides greater single photon indistinguishability than incoherent pumping, but is also more challenging experimentally. Here, we demonstrate high signal to noise quasiresonant excitation of InP/InGaP quantum dots. The excitation is provided via second harmonic generated from a telecommunications wavelength laser resonant with the fundamental mode of a photonic crystal cavity, fabricated at twice the quantum dot transition wavelength. The …
The performance requirements for fault-tolerant quantum computing are very stringent. Qubits must be manipulated, coupled, and measured with error rates well below 1%. For semiconductor implementations, silicon quantum dot spin qubits have demonstrated average single-qubit Clifford gate error rates that approach this threshold, notably with error rates of 0.14% in isotopically enriched $^{28}$Si/SiGe devices. This gate performance, together with high-fidelity two-qubit gates and measurements, is only known to meet the threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computing in some architectures when as…
An electron confined in a quantum dot interacts with its local nuclear spin environment through the hyperfine contact interaction. This interaction combined with external control and relaxation or measurement of the electron spin allows for the generation of dynamic nuclear polarization. The quantum nature of the nuclear bath, along with the interplay of coherent external fields and incoherent dynamics in these systems renders a wealth of intriguing phenomena seen in recent experiments such as electron Zeeman frequency focusing, hysteresis, and line dragging. We develop in detail a fully quant…
Colloidal quantum dots have garnered active research interest as quantum emitters due to their robust synthesis process and straightforward integration with nanophotonic platforms. However, obtaining indistinguishable photons from the colloidal quantum dots at room temperature is fundamentally challenging because they suffer from an extremely large dephasing rate. Here we propose an experimentally feasible method of obtaining indistinguishable single photons from an incoherently pumped solution-processed colloidal quantum dot coupled to a system of nanocavities. We show that by coupling a coll…
We address the question of how to model electron transport through closed Aharonov-Bohm interferometers which contain quantum dots. By explicitly studying interferometers with one and two quantum dots, we establish the connection between a tunneling-Hamiltonian formulation on the one hand and a scattering-matrix approach on the other hand. We prove that, under certain circumstances, both approaches are equivalent, i.e., both types of models can describe the same experimental setups. Furthermore, we analyze how the interplay of the Aharonov-Bohm phase and the orbital phase associated with the l…
We consider how the nature of the dynamics affects ground state properties of ballistic quantum dots. We find that ``mesoscopic Stoner fluctuations'', that arise from the residual screened Coulomb interaction, are very sensitive to the degree of chaos. It leads to ground state energies and spin-polarizations whose fluctuations strongly increase as a system becomes less chaotic. The crucial features are illustrated with a model that depends on a parameter that tunes the dynamics from nearly integrable to mostly chaotic.
This paper reviews recent studies of mesoscopic fluctuations in transport through ballistic quantum dots, emphasizing differences between conduction through open dots and tunneling through nearly isolated dots. Both the open dots and the tunnel-contacted dots show random, repeatable conductance fluctuations with universal statistical proper-ties that are accurately characterized by a variety of theoretical models including random matrix theory, semiclassical methods and nonlinear sigma model calculations. We apply these results in open dots to extract the dephasing rate of electrons within the…
Linear conductance across a large quantum dot via a single level e_0 with large hybridization to the contacts is strongly sensitive to quasi-bound states localized in the dot and weakly coupled to e_0. It oscillates with the gate voltage due to interference of the Fano type. At low temperature and Coulomb blockade, Kondo correlations damp the oscillations on an extended range of gate voltage values, by freezing the occupancy of the e_0 level itself. As a consequence, antiresonances of Fano origin are washed out. The results are in good correspondence with experimental data for a large quantum …
We study avoided crossings opened by spin-orbit interaction in the energy spectra of one- and two-electron anisotropic quantum dots in perpendicular magnetic field. We find that for simultaneously present Rashba and Dresselhaus interactions the width of avoided crossings and the effective $g$ factor depend on the dot orientation within (001) crystal plane. The extreme values of these quantities are obtained for [110] and [1$\bar{1}$0] orientations of the dot. The width of singlet-triplet avoided crossing changes between these two orientations by as much as two orders of magnitude. The discusse…
We present here a theoretical method to determine the phononic contribution to the thermal conductance of nanoscale systems in the phase-coherent regime. Our approach makes use of classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to calculate the temperature-dependent dynamical matrix, and the phononic heat conductance is subsequently computed within the Landauer-Büttiker formalism with the help of nonequilibrium Green's function techniques. Tailored to nanostructures, crucial steps of force constant and heat transport calculations are performed directly in real space. As compared to conventional …
We investigate the power-dependent photoluminescence spectra from a strongly coupled quantum dot-cavity system using a quantum master equation technique that accounts for incoherent pumping, pure dephasing, and fermion or boson statistics. Analytical spectra at the one-photon correlation level and the numerically exact multi-photon spectra for fermions are presented. We compare to recent experiments on a quantum dot-micropiller cavity system and show that an excellent fit to the data can be obtained by varying only the incoherent pump rates in direct correspondence with the experiments. Our th…
We consider the spin and orbital Kondo effect in a parallel arrangement of two strongly electrostatically coupled quantum dots. Increasing the exchange of electrons between the dots through the attached leads induces the transition between the SU(4) spin- and orbital Kondo effect and SU(2) spin Kondo effect. Being the same for the SU(4) and SU(2) symmetry points, the Kondo temperature drops slightly in the intermediate regime. Experimentally, two kinds of Kondo effects can be discriminated by the sensitivity to the suppression of the spin Kondo effect by Zeeman field. The dependence of Kondo t…
The spin-orbit splitting of the electron levels in a two-dimensional quantum dot in a perpendicular magnetic field is studied. It is shown that at the point of an accidental degeneracy of the two lowest levels above the ground state the Rashba spin-orbit coupling leads to a level anticrossing and to mixing of spin-up and spin-down states, whereas there is no mixing of these levels due to the Dresselhaus term. We calculate the relaxation and decoherence times of the three lowest levels due to phonons. We find that the spin relaxation rate as a function of a magnetic field exhibits a cusp-like s…
Few-electron states in carbon-nanotube quantum dots are studied by means of the configuration-interaction method. The peculiar non-interacting feature of the tunneling spectrum for two electrons, recently measured by Kuemmeth et al. [Nature 452, 448 (2008)], is explained by the splitting of a low-lying isospin multiplet due to spin-orbit interaction. Nevertheless, the strongly-interacting ground state forms a `Wigner molecule' made of electrons localized in space. Signatures of the electron molecule may be seen in tunneling spectra by varying the tunable dot confinement potential.
A simple calculation method for photon statistics of frequency-filtered fields is proposed. This method, based on eigenvalue decompositions of superoperators, allows us to study effects on the photon statistics of spectral filtering by various types of filters, such as Gaussian and rectangular filters as well as Lorentzian filters, which is not possible by conventional approaches. As an example, this method is applied to a simulation of quantum dot single-photon emitters, where we found the efficient choice of the filter types to have pure single photons depends on the excitation conditions i.…
In this article we analyze spin dynamics for electrons confined to semiconductor quantum dots due to the contact hyperfine interaction. We compare mean-field (classical) evolution of an electron spin in the presence of a nuclear field with the exact quantum evolution for the special case of uniform hyperfine coupling constants. We find that (in this special case) the zero-magnetic-field dynamics due to the mean-field approximation and quantum evolution are similar. However, in a finite magnetic field, the quantum and classical solutions agree only up to a certain time scale t<τ_c, after which …
We report on the resonant emission in coherently-driven single semiconductor quantum dots. We demonstrate that an ultra-weak non-resonant laser acts as an optical gate for the quantum dot resonant response. We show that the gate laser suppresses Coulomb blockade at the origin of a resonant emission quenching, and that the optically-gated quantum dots systematically behave as ideal two-level systems in both regimes of coherent and incoherent resonant emission.
Motivated by an important recent experiment [Deng et al., Science 354, 1557 (2016)], we theoretically consider the interplay between Andreev bound states(ABSs) and Majorana bound states(MBSs) in quantum dot-nanowire semiconductor systems with proximity-induced superconductivity(SC), spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting. The dot induces ABSs in the SC nanowire which show complex behavior as a function of Zeeman splitting and chemical potential, and the specific question is whether two such ABSs can come together forming a topological MBS. We consider physical situations involving the dot be…
We provide a unified theory of luminescence spectra of coupled light-matter systems realized with semiconductor heterostructures in microcavities, encompassing: i) the spontaneous emission case, where the system decays from a prepared (typically pure) initial state, and ii) luminescence in the presence of a continuous, incoherent pump. While the former case has been amply discussed in the literature (albeit mainly for the case of resonance), no consideration has been given to the influence of the incoherent pump. We show how, by provoking a self-consistent quantum state, the pump considerably …
The coherent spin dynamics of resident carriers, electrons and holes, in semiconductor quantum structures is studied by periodical optical excitation using short laser pulses and in an external magnetic field. The generation and dephasing of spin polarization in an ensemble of carrier spins, for which the relaxation time of individual spins exceeds the repetition period of the laser pulses, are analyzed theoretically. Spin polarization accumulation is manifested either as resonant spin amplification or as mode-locking of carrier spin coherences. It is shown that both regimes have the same orig…
We employ two-dimensional (2D) coherent, nonlinear spectroscopy to investigate couplings within individual InAs quantum dots (QD) and QD molecules. Swapping pulse ordering in a two-beam sequence permits to distinguish between rephasing and non-rephasing four-wave mixing (FWM) configurations. We emphasize the non-rephasing case, allowing to monitor two-photon coherence dynamics. Respective Fourier transform yields a double quantum 2D FWM map, which is corroborated with its single quantum counterpart, originating from the rephasing sequence. We introduce referencing of the FWM phase with the one…
We investigate the electron states and optical absorption in square- and hexagonal-shaped two-dimensional (2D) HgTe quantum dots and quantum rings in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The electronic structure is modeled by means of the $sp^3d^5s^*$ tight-binding method within the nearest-neighbor approximation. Both bulklike and edge states appear in the energy spectrum. The bulklike states in quantum rings exhibit Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in magnetic field, whereas no such oscillations are found in quantum dots, which is ascribed to the different topology of the two systems. W…
Exact diagonalization results are reported for the lowest rotational band of N=6 electrons in strong magnetic fields in the range of high angular momenta 70 <= L <= 140 (covering the corresponding range of fractional filling factors 1/5 >= nu >= 1/9). A detailed comparison of energetic, spectral, and transport properties (specifically, magic angular momenta, radial electron densities, occupation number distributions, overlaps and total energies, and exponents of current-voltage power law) shows that the recently discovered rotating-electron-molecule wave functions [Phys. Rev. B 66, 115315 (200…
We study the photon emission from a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. Incoherent pumping of its excitons and biexciton provokes the emission of leaky and cavity modes. By solving a master equation we obtain the correlation functions required to compute the spectrum and the relative efficiency among the emission of pairs and single photons. A quantum regime appears for low pumping and large rate of emission. By means of a post-selection process, a two beams experiment with different linear polarizations could be performed producing a large polarization entanglement visibility precisely in …
The light emission rate of a single quantum dot can be drastically enhanced by embedding it in a resonant semiconductor microcavity. This phenomenon is known as the Purcell effect, and the coupling strength between emitter and cavity can be quantified by the Purcell factor. The most natural way for probing the Purcell effect is a time-resolved measurement. However, this approach is not always the most convenient one, and alternative approaches based on a continuous-wave measurement are often more appropriate. Various signatures of the Purcell effect can indeed be observed using continuous-wave…
We study spin correlation in a double quantum dot containing a few electrons in each dot (around 10). Clear current rectification with negative differential conductance is observed in the cotunneling regime, which is well explained by a Pauli spin blockade. The current feature is discussed in connection with exchange singlet-triplet splitting based on two simple models, one of which takes coherent interdot coupling and the other incoherent interdot coupling into account.
We investigate theoretically two-photon processes in a microcavity containing one quantum dot in the strong coupling regime. The cavity mode can be tuned to resonantly drive the two-photon transition between the ground and the biexciton states, while the exciton states are far-off resonance due to the biexciton binding energy. We study the steady state of the quantum dot and cavity field in presence of a continuous incoherent pumping. We identify the regime where the system acts as two-photon emitter and discuss the feasibility and performance of realistic single quantum dot devices for two-ph…
We have investigated the transport characteristics of an electron pump consisting of an asymmetric double quantum dot at zero bias voltage which is subject to electromagnetic radiation. Depending on the energies of the intermediate states in the pumping cycle, electrons can be transferred through the dots incoherently via sequential tunneling or coherently via co-tunneling. The dc transport through the system can be controlled by the frequency of the applied radiation. We concentrate on resonant tunneling peaks in the pumping current that are interesting to observe experimentally.
e study theoretically, the photoluminescence properties of a single quantum dot in a microcavity under incoherent excitation. We propose a microscopic quantum statistical approach providing a Lindblad (thus completely positive) description of pumping and decay mechanisms of the quantum dot and of the cavity mode. Our analytical results show that strong coupling (SC) and linewidths are largely independent on the pumping intensity (until saturation effects come into play), in contrast to previous theoretical findings. We shall show the reliable predicting character of our theoretical framework i…
We examine transport through a quantum dot coupled to three ferromagnetic leads in the regime of weak tunnel coupling. A finite source-drain voltage generates a nonequilibrium spin on the otherwise non-magnetic quantum dot. This spin accumulation leads to magnetoresistance. A ferromagnetic but current-free base electrode influences the quantum-dot spin via incoherent spin-flip processes and coherent spin precession. As the dot spin determines the conductance of the device, this allows for a purely magnetic transistor-like operation. We analyze the effect of both types of processes on the elect…
We report on the influence of hyperfine interaction on the optical orientation of singly charged excitons X+ and X- in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots. All measurements were carried out on individual quantum dots studied by micro-photoluminescence at low temperature. We show that the hyperfine interaction leads to an effective partial spin relaxation, under 50kHz modulated excitation polarization, which becomes however strongly inhibited under steady optical pumping conditions because of dynamical nuclear polarization. This optically created magnetic-like nuclear field can become very st…
We have investigated the response of the acoustoelectric current driven by a surface-acoustic wave through a quantum point contact in the closed-channel regime. Under proper conditions, the current develops plateaus at integer multiples of ef when the frequency f of the surface-acoustic wave or the gate voltage Vg of the point contact is varied. A pronounced 1.1 MHz beat period of the current indicates that the interference of the surface-acoustic wave with reflected waves matters. This is supported by the results obtained after a second independent beam of surface-acoustic wave was added, tra…
Optical spectroscopy and quantum control of semiconductor quantum dots has become a vivid field of research. The recent progress in both theory and experiment is reviewed, with emphasis on theoretical and computational concepts.
We introduce a rate formalism to treat classically forbidden electron transport through a quantum dot (cotunneling) in the presence of a coupled measurement device. We demonstrate this formalism for a toy model case of cotunneling through a single-level dot while being coupled to a strongly pinched-off quantum point contact (QPC). We find that the detector generates three types of back-action: the measurement collapses the coherent transport through the virtual state, but at the same time allows for QPC-assisted incoherent transport, and widens the dot level. Last, we obtain the measured cotun…
We theoretically investigate the optical response of a quantum dot, embedded in a microcavity and incoherently excited by pulsed pumping. The exciton and biexciton transition are off-resonantly coupled with the left- and right-polarized mode of the cavity, while the two-photon resonance condition is fulfilled. Rich behaviours are shown to occur in the time dependence of the second-order correlation functions which refer to counter-polarized photons. The corresponding time-averaged quantities, which are accessible to experiments, confirm that such a dot-cavity system behaves as a good emitter o…
Tunneling through two vertically coupled quantum dots is studied by means of a Pauli master equation model. The observation of double peaks in the current-voltage characteristic in a recent experiment is analyzed in terms of the tunnel coupling between the quantum dots and the coupling to the contacts. Different regimes for the emitter chemical potential indicating different peak scenarios in the tunneling current are discussed in detail. We show by comparison with a density matrix approach that the interplay of coherent and incoherent effects in the stationary current can be fully described b…
