Deuterated molecules have been detected and studied toward Orion BN/KL in the past decades, mostly with single-dish telescopes. However, high angular resolution data are critical not only for interpreting the spatial distribution of the deuteration ratio but also for understanding this complex region in terms of cloud evolution involving star-forming activities and stellar feedbacks. We present here the first high angular resolution (1.8 arcsec \times 0.8 arcsec) images of deuterated methanol CH2DOH in Orion BN/KL observed with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer from 1999 to 2007 in the 1 to 3 mm range. Six CH2DOH lines were detected around 105.8, 223.5, and 225.9 GHz. In addition, three E-type methanol lines around 101-102 GHz were detected and were used to derive the corresponding CH3OH rotational temperatures and column densities toward different regions across Orion BN/KL. The strongest CH2DOH and CH3OH emissions come from the Hot Core southwest region with an LSR velocity of about 8 km/s. We derive [CH2DOH]/[CH3OH] abundance ratios of 0.8-1.3\times10^-3 toward three CH2DOH emission peaks. A new transition of CH3OD was detected at 226.2 GHz for the first time in the interstellar medium. Its distribution is similar to that of CH2DOH. Besides, we find that the [CH2DOH]/[CH3OD] abundance ratios are lower than unity in the central part of BN/KL. Furthermore, the HDO 3(1,2)-2(2,1) line at 225.9 GHz was detected and its emission distribution shows a shift of a few arcseconds with respect to the deuterated methanol emission that likely results from different excitation effects. The deuteration ratios derived along Orion BN/KL are not markedly different from one clump to another. However, various processes such as slow heating due to ongoing star formation, heating by luminous infrared sources, or heating by shocks could be competing to explain some local differences observed for these ratios.
We report the first high angular resolution imaging (3.4\arcsec $\times$ 3.0\arcsec) of deuterated formaldehyde (HDCO) toward Orion--KL, carried out with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). We find that the spatial distribution of the formaldehyde emission systematically differs from that of methanol: while methanol is found towards the inner part of the region, HDCO is found in colder gas that wraps around the methanol emission on four sides. The HDCO/H$_2$CO ratios are determined to be 0.003--0.009 within the region, up to an order of magnitude higher than the D/H measured for methanol. These fin…
We present the fourth portion of a Galactic Plane survey of methanol masers at 6668 MHz, spanning the longitude range 186 degrees to 330 degrees. We report 207 maser detections, 89 new to the survey. This completes the southern sky part of the Methanol Multibeam survey and includes a large proportion of new sources, 43%. We also include results from blind observations of the Orion-Monoceros star forming region, formally outside the latitude range of the Methanol Multibeam survey; only the four previously known methanol emitting sites were detected, of which we present new positions and spectra…
We present a comprehensive study of the deuterated molecules detected in the fullband HIFI survey of the Orion KL region. Ammonia, formaldehyde, and methanol and their singly deuterated isotopologues are each detected through numerous transitions in this survey with a wide range in optical depths and excitation conditions. In conjunction with a recent study of the abundance of HDO and H$_2$O in Orion KL, this study yields the best constraints on deuterium fractionation in an interstellar molecular cloud to date. As previous studies have found, both the Hot Core and Compact Ridge regions within…
We investigate the deuteration of methanol towards the high-mass star forming region NGC 7538-IRS1. We have carried out a multi-transition study of CH$_3$OH, $^{13}$CH$_3$OH and of the deuterated fllavors, CH$_2$DOH and CH$_3$OD, between 1.0--1.4 mm with the IRAM-30~m antenna. In total, 34 $^{13}$CH$_3$OH, 13 CH$_2$DOH lines and 20 CH$_3$OD lines spanning a wide range of upper-state energies (E$_{up}$) were detected. From the detected transitions, we estimate that the measured D/H does not exceed 1$\%$, with a measured CH$_2$DOH/CH$_3$OH and CH$_3$OD/CH$_3$OH of about (32$\pm$8)$\times$10$^{-4…

Deuterated methanol is one of the most robust windows astrochemists have on the individual chemical reactions forming deuterium-bearing molecules and the physicochemical history of the regions where they reside. The first-time detection of mono- and di-deuterated methanol in a cometary coma is presented for comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko using Rosetta-ROSINA data. D-methanol (CH3OD and CH2DOH combined) and D2-methanol (CH2DOD and CHD2OH combined) have an abundance of 5.5+/-0.46 and 0.00069+/-0.00014 per cent relative to normal methanol. The data span a methanol deuteration fraction (D/H ratio…
Mono-deuterated methanol is thought to form during the prestellar core stage of star formation. Observed variations in the CH2DOH/CH3OD ratio suggest that its formation is strongly dependent on the surrounding cloud conditions. Thus, it is a potential tracer of the physical conditions before the onset of star formation. A single-point physical model representative of a typical prestellar core is coupled to chemical models to investigate potential formation pathways towards deuterated methanol at the prestellar stage. Simple addition reactions of H and D are not able to reproduce observed abund…
The study of deuteration in pre-stellar cores is important to understand the physical and chemical initial conditions in the process of star formation. In particular, observations toward pre-stellar cores of methanol and deuterated methanol, solely formed on the surface of dust grains, may provide useful insights on surface processes at low temperatures. Here we analyze maps of CO, methanol, formaldehyde and their deuterated isotopologues toward a well-known pre-stellar core. This study allows us to test current gas-dust chemical models. Single-dish observations of CH$_3$OH, CH$_2$DOH, H$_2$CO…
Using the IRAM 30m telescope, we mapped the methanol emission in the pre-stellar core L1544 and observed singly deuterated methanol (CH$_2$DOH and CH$_3$OD) towards the dust peak of L1544. Non-LTE radiative transfer modelling was performed on three CH$_3$OH emissions lines at 96.7 GHz, using a Bonnor-Ebert sphere as a model for the source. We have also assumed a centrally decreasing abundance profile to take the molecule freeze-out in the inner core into account. The column density of CH$_2$DOH was derived assuming LTE excitation and optically thin emission. The CH$_3$OH emission has a highly …
The results of a maser survey toward ninety-nine protostars in the Orion molecular cloud complex are presented. The target sources are low-mass protostars identified from infrared observations. Single-dish observations were carried out in the water maser line at 22 GHz and the methanol class I maser lines at 44, 95, and 133 GHz. Most of the detected sources were mapped to determine the source positions. Five water maser sources were detected, and they are excited by HH 1-2 VLA 3, HH 1-2 VLA 1, L1641N MM1/3, NGC 2071 IRS 1/3, and an object in the OMC 3 region. The water masers showed significan…
Methanol is a key species in astrochemistry since it is the most abundant organic molecule in the ISM and is thought to be the mother molecule of many complex organic species. Estimating the deuteration of methanol around young protostars is of crucial importance because it highly depends on its formation mechanisms and the physical conditions during its moment of formation. We analyse dozens of transitions from deuterated methanol isotopologues coming from various existing observational datasets from the IRAM-PdBI and ALMA sub-mm interferometers to estimate the methanol deuteration surroundin…

The relative abundances of singly-deuterated methanol isotopologues, [CH$_{2}$DOH]/[CH$_{3}$OD], in star-forming regions deviate from the statistically expected ratio of 3. In Orion KL, the nearest high-mass star-forming region to Earth, the singly-deuterated methanol ratio is about 1, and the cause for this observation has been explored through theory for nearly three decades. We present high-angular resolution observations of Orion KL using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to map small-scale changes in CH$_{3}$OD column density across the nebula, which provide a new avenue to…
Context: Methanol is thought to be mainly formed during the prestellar phase and its deuterated form keeps memory of the conditions at that epoch. Thanks to the unique combination of high angular resolution and sensitivity provided by ALMA, we wish to measure methanol deuteration in the planet formation region around a Class 0 protostar and to understand its origin. Aims: We mapped both the $^{13}$CH$_3$OH and CH$_2$DOH distribution in the inner regions ($\sim$100 au) of the HH212 system in Orion B. To this end, we used ALMA Cycle 1 and Cycle 4 observations in Band 7 with angular resolution do…
We mapped two molecular cloud cores in the Orion A cloud with the ALMA ACA 7-m Array and with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope. These cores have bright N$_2$D$^+$ emission in single-pointing observations with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope, have relatively high deuterium fraction, and are thought to be close to the onset of star formation. One is a star-forming core, and the other is starless. These cores are located along filaments observed in N$_2$H$^+$, and show narrow linewidths of 0.41 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.45 km s$^{-1}$ in N$_2$D$^+$, respectively, with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. Both…
A previous analysis of methanol and formaldehyde towards the Orion Bar concluded that the two molecular species may trace different physical components, methanol the clumpy material, and formaldehyde the interclump medium. To verify this hypothesis, we performed multi-line mapping observations of the two molecules to study their spatial distributions. The observations were performed with the IRAM-30m telescope at 218 and 241 GHz, with an angular resolution of ~11''. Additional data for H2CO from the Plateau de Bure array are also discussed. The data were analysed using an LVG approach. Both mo…
The deuteration of molecules forming in the ices such as methanol (CH$_3$OH) is sensitive to the physical conditions during their formation in dense cold clouds and can be probed through observations of deuterated methanol in hot cores. Observations with ALMA containing transitions of CH$_3$OH, CH$_2$DOH, CHD$_2$OH, $^{13}$CH$_3$OH, and CH$_3^{18}$OH are investigated. The column densities of CH$_2$DOH, CHD$_2$OH, and CH$_3$OH are determined for all sources, where the column density of CH$_3$OH is derived from optically thin $^{13}$C and $^{18}$O isotopologues. Consequently, the D/H ratio of me…
We present ALMA maps of the starless molecular cloud core Ophiuchus/H-MM1 in the lines of deuterated ammonia (ortho-NH2D), methanol (CH3OH), and sulphur monoxide (SO). The dense core is seen in NH2D emission, whereas the CH3OH and SO distributions form a halo surrounding the core. Because methanol is formed on grain surfaces, its emission highlights regions where desorption from grains is particularly efficient. Methanol and sulphur monoxide are most abundant in a narrow zone that follows the eastern side of the core. This side is sheltered from the stronger external radiation field coming fro…
We report the results of a search for emission features from interstellar deuterated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the 4um region with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. No significant excess emission is seen in 4.3-4.7um in the spectra toward the Orion Bar and M17 after the subtraction of line emission from the ionized gas. A small excess of emission remains at around 4.4 and 4.65um, but the ratio of their intensity to that of the band emission from PAHs at 3.3-3.5um is estimated as 2-3%. This is an order of magnitude smaller than the values previously reported and also tho…
We used several data sets from the Plateau de Bure Interferometer to map the dimethyl ether emission in Orion-KL with different arcsec spatial resolutions and different energy levels to compare with our previous methyl formate maps. Our data show remarkable similarity between the dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) and the methyl formate (HCOOCH3) distributions even on a small scale (1.8"x0.8" or about 500 AU). This long suspected similarity, seen from both observational and theoretical arguments, is demonstrated with unprecedented confidence, with a correlation coefficient of maps of 0.8. A common precu…
The abundance of deuterated molecules in a star-forming region is sensitive to the environment in which they are formed. Deuteration fractions therefore provide a powerful tool for studying the physical and chemical evolution of a star-forming system. While local low-mass star-forming regions show very high deuteration ratios, much lower fractions are observed towards Orion and the Galactic Centre. We derive methanol deuteration fractions at a number of locations towards the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I, located at a mean distance of 1.3 kpc, and discuss how these can shed light on …
Recent observations indicate that organic molecules are prevalent towards starless and prestellar cores. Deuteration of these molecules has not been well-studied during the starless phase. Published observations of singly-deuterated methanol, CH$_2$DOH, have only been observed in a couple of well-studied, dense and evolved prestellar cores (e.g. L1544, L183). Since the formation of gas-phase methanol during this cold phase is believed to occur via desorption from the icy grain surfaces, observations of CH$_2$DOH may be useful as a probe of the deuterium fraction in the ice mantles of dust grai…
We present ALMA (0.87~mm) and VLA (9~mm) observations toward OMC2-FIR4 and OMC2-FIR3 within the Orion integral-shaped filament that are thought to be the nearest regions of intermediate mass star formation. We characterize the continuum sources within these regions on $\sim$40~AU (0\farcs1) scales and associated molecular line emission at a factor of $\sim$30 better resolution than previous observations at similar wavelengths. We identify six compact continuum sources within OMC2-FIR4, four in OMC2-FIR3, and one additional source just outside OMC2-FIR4. This continuum emission is tracing the i…
The presence of complex organic molecules (COMs) in the interstellar medium (ISM) is of great interest since it may link to the origin and prevalence of life in the universe. Aiming to investigate the occurrence of COMs and their possible origins, we conducted a chemical census toward a sample of protostellar cores as part of the ALMA Survey of Orion Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (ALMASOP) project. We report the detection of 11 hot corino sources, which exhibit compact emissions from warm and abundant COMs, among 56 Class 0/I protostellar cores. All the hot corino sources discovered are likely C…
High spatial resolution low-J 12CO observations have shown that the wide-angle outflow seen in the Orion BN/KL region correlates with the famous H2 fingers. Recently, high-resolution large-scale mappings of mid- and higher-J CO emissions have been reported toward the Orion molecular cloud 1 core region using the APEX telescope. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate this outflow in the higher-J 12CO emission, which is likely excited by shocks. The observations were carried out using the dual-color heterodyne array CHAMP+ on the APEX telescope. The images of the Orion BN/KL region were obt…
Here we present high spatial resolution (<1 arcsecond) observations of molecular emission in Orion-KL conducted using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-Wave Astronomy (CARMA). This work was motivated by recent millimeter continuum imaging studies of this region conducted at a similarly high spatial resolution, which revealed that the bulk of the emission arises from numerous compact sources, rather than the larger-scale extended structures typically associated with the Orion Hot Core and Compact Ridge. Given that the spatial extent of molecular emission greatly affects the determin…
Studies of deuterated isotopologues of complex organic molecules can provide important constraints on their origin in regions of star formation. In particular, the abundances of deuterated species are very sensitive to the physical conditions in the environment where they form. Due to the low temperatures in regions of star formation, these isotopologues are enhanced to significant levels, making detections of multiply-deuterated species possible. However, for complex organic species, only the multiply-deuterated variants of methanol and methyl cyanide have been reported so far. The aim of thi…
The HDO/H2O ratio is a powerful diagnostic to understand the evolution of water from the first stages of star formation to the formation of planets and comets. Our aim is to determine precisely the abundance distribution of HDO towards the low-mass protostar IRAS16293-2422 and learn more about the water formation mechanisms by determining the HDO/H2O abundance ratio. A spectral survey of the source IRAS16293-2422 was carried out in the framework of the CHESS Herschel Key program with the HIFI instrument, allowing the detection of numerous HDO lines. Other transitions have been observed previou…
It has recently been suggested that chemical processing can shape the spatial distributions of complex molecules in the Orion-KL region and lead to the nitrogen-oxygen "chemical differentiation" seen in previous observations of this source. Orion-KL is a very dynamic region, and it is therefore also possible that physical conditions can shape the molecular distributions in this source. Only high spatial resolution observations can provide the information needed to disentangle these effects. Here we present millimeter imaging studies of Orion-KL at various beam sizes using the Combined Array fo…
We present combined VLA and Green Bank Telescope images of \ammonia\ inversion transitions (1,1) and (2,2) toward OMC2 and OMC3. We focus on the relatively quiescent Orion cores, which are away from the Trapezium cluster and have no sign of massive protostars nor evolved star formation, such as IRAS source, water maser, and methanol maser. The 5\arcsec\ angular resolution and $0.6 \rm{}km\,s^{-1}$ velocity resolution of these data enable us to study the thermal and dynamic state of these cores at $\sim{}0.02 \rm{}pc$ scales, comparable to or smaller than those of the current dust continuum sur…
We attempt to achieve a better understanding of the gas distribution and velocity field around the deeply embedded Class 0 protostar SMM 3 in the Orion B9 star-forming region. Using the APEX 12-m telescope, we mapped the line emission from the J=2-1 rotational transition of two CO isotopologues, 13CO and C18O, over a 4' x 4' region around Orion B9/SMM 3. Both the 13CO and C18O lines exhibit two well separated velocity components at about 1.3 and 8.7 km/s. The emission of both CO isotopologues is more widely distributed than the submillimetre dust continuum emission as probed by LABOCA. The LAB…
The H3+ ion plays a key role in the chemistry of dense interstellar gas clouds where stars and planets are forming. The low temperatures and high extinctions of such clouds make direct observations of H3+ impossible, but lead to large abundances of H2D+ and D2H+ which are very useful probes of the early stages of star and planet formation. Maps of H2D+ and D2H+ pure rotational line emission toward star-forming regions show that the strong deuteration of H3+ is the result of near-complete molecular depletion of CNO-bearing molecules onto grain surfaces, which quickly disappears as cores warm up…

We study the spatial distribution and chemistry of small hydrocarbons in the Orion Bar PDR. We used the IRAM-30m telescope to carry out a millimetre line survey towards the Orion Bar edge, complemented with ~2'x2' maps of the C2H and c-C3H2 emission. We analyse the excitation of the detected hydrocarbons and constrain the physical conditions of the emitting regions with non-LTE radiative transfer models. We compare the inferred column densities with updated gas-phase photochemical models including 13CCH and C13CH isotopomer fractionation. ~40% of the lines in the survey arise from hydrocarbons…
The inheritance of material across the star and planet formation process is traced by deuterium fractionation. We report here the first detection of doubly deuterated methanol towards pre-stellar cores. We study the deuterium fractionation of methanol, CH$_{3}$OH, towards two starless and two pre-stellar cores. We derive a D/H ratio of 0.8-1.9$\%$ with CH$_{2}$DOH in pre-stellar cores H-MM1 and L694-2, consistent with measurements in more evolved Class 0/I objects and comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, suggesting a direct chemical link arising in the pre-stellar stage. Furthermore, the column de…

This work proposes deuteronated PAH (DPAH+ ) molecules as a potential carrier of the 4.4 and 4.65 μm mid infrared emission bands that have been observationally detected towards the Orion and M17 regions. Density Functional Theory calculations have been carried out on DPAH+ molecules to see the variations in the spectral behaviour from that of a pure PAH. DPAH+ molecules show features that arise due to the stretching of the aliphatic C-D bond. Deuterated PAHs have been previously reported as carriers for such features. However, preferred conditions of ionization of PAHs in the interstellar medi…
The present study aims to characterise the physical and chemical properties of the protostellar core Orion B9-SMM3. The APEX telescope was used to perform a follow-up molecular line survey of SMM3. The following species were identified from the frequency range 218.2-222.2 GHz: $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, SO, para-H$_2$CO, and E$_1$-type CH$_3$OH. The on-the-fly mapping observations at 215.1-219.1 GHz revealed that SMM3 is associated with a dense gas core as traced by DCO$^+$ and p-H$_2$CO. Altogether three different p-H$_2$CO transitions were detected with clearly broadened linewidths (8.2-11 km s$^…
Spectral line survey observations are conducted toward the high-mass protostar candidate NGC 2264 CMM3 in the 4 mm, 3 mm, and 0.8 mm bands with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10 m telescope. In total, 265 emission lines are detected in the 4 mm and 3 mm bands, and 74 emission lines in the 0.8 mm band. As a result, 36 molecular species and 30 isotopologues are identified. In addition to the fundamental molecular species, many emission lines of carbon-chain molecules such as HC5N, C4H, CCS, and C3S are detected in the 4 mm and 3 mm bands. De…

In the context of the IRAM 30m Large Program GEMS, we present a study of thioformaldehyde in several starless cores located in star-forming filaments of Taurus, Perseus, and Orion. We investigate the influence of the environmental conditions on the abundances of these molecules in the cores, and the effect of time evolution. We have modelled the observed lines of H2CS, HDCS, and D2CS using the radiative transfer code RADEX. We have also used the chemical code Nautilus to model the evolution of these species depending on the characteristics of the starless cores. We derive column densities and …
