We investigate fast frictionless expansion of an optical lattice with dynamically variable spacing (accordion lattice). We design an expansion trajectory that yields a final state identical to the initial state up to an irrelevant phase factor. We discuss the effect of additional force and nonlinear interaction on the fast frictionless expansion.

Frictionless dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates under fast trap variations

A method is proposed to design the time dependence of the trap frequency and achieve in a short time an adiabatic-like (frictionless) evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Different cases depending on the effective dimension of the trap and the interaction regimes are considered. 2D traps are particularly suitable as the method can be applied without the need to impose any additional time-dependent change in the strength of the interatomic interaction or a Thomas-Fermi regime as it occurs for 1D and 3D traps.

Fast frictionless dynamics as a toolbox for low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

A method is proposed to implement a fast frictionless dynamics in a low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate by engineering the time-dependence of the transverse confining potential in a highly anisotropic trap. The method exploits the inversion of the dynamical self-similar scaling law in the radial degrees of freedom. We discuss the application of the method to preserve short-range correlations in time of flight experiments, the implementation of nearly-sudden quenches of non-linear interactions, and its power to assist self-similar dynamics in quasi-one dimensional condensates.

Optimized sympathetic cooling of atomic mixtures via fast adiabatic strategies

We discuss fast frictionless cooling techniques in the framework of sympathetic cooling of cold atomic mixtures. It is argued that optimal cooling of an atomic species - in which the deepest quantum degeneracy regime is achieved - may be obtained by means of sympathetic cooling with another species whose trapping frequency is dynamically changed to maintain constancy of the Lewis-Riesenfeld adiabatic invariant. Advantages and limitations of this cooling strategy are discussed, with particular regard to the possibility of cooling Fermi gases to a deeper degenerate regime.

Heating Rates under Fast Periodic Driving beyond Linear Response

Heating under periodic driving is a generic nonequilibrium phenomenon, and it is a challenging problem in nonequilibrium statistical physics to derive a quantitatively accurate heating rate. In this work, we provide a simple formula on the heating rate under fast and strong periodic driving in classical and quantum many-body systems. Fast Converging Path Integrals for Time-Dependent Potentials I: Recursive Calculation of Short-Time Expansion of the Propagator

Fast trimers in one-dimensional extended Fermi-Hubbard model

We consider a one-dimensional two component extended Fermi-Hubbard model with nearest neighbor interactions and mass imbalance between the two species. We study the stability of trimers, various observables for detecting them, and expansion dynamics. We generalize the definition of the trimer gap to include the formation of different types of clusters originating from nearest neighbor interactions.
