Air cooling for Vertex Detectors

The vertex detectors are crucial detectors for future linear e+e- colliders since they must give the most accurate location of any outgoing charged particles originating from the interaction point. The DEPFET collaboration is developing a new type of pixel sensors which provide very low noise and high spatial resolution. In order to precisely determine the track and vertex positions, multiple scattering in the detector has to be reduced by minimizing the material in the sensors, cooling, and support structures. A new method of cooling by blowing air over the sensors has been developed and tested. It is applied in the design and construction of the Belle-II detector and may be used in the new generation of vertex detectors for linear colliders.

Evaporative CO2 cooling using microchannels etched in silicon for the future LHCb vertex detector

The extreme radiation dose received by vertex detectors at the Large Hadron Collider dictates stringent requirements on their cooling systems. R&D status of a gas-compressor based two-phase CO2 cooling system for FPCCD Vertex Detector

Fine pixel CCD (FPCCD) is one of the candidate sensor technologies for the vertex detector used for experiments at the International Linear Collider (ILC). FPCCD vertex detector is supposed to be cooled down to -40 degree for improvement of radiation immunity. For this purpose, a two-phase CO2 cooling system using a gas compressor for CO2 circulation is being developed at KEK. The status of this R&D is presented in this article.

Vertex Detector Cable Considerations

Vertex detector cable requirements are considered within the context of the SiD concept. Cable material should be limited so that the number of radiation lengths represented is consistent with the material budget. In order to take advantage of the proposed accelerator beam structure and allow cooling by flow of dry gas, pulsed power is assumed. Potential approaches to power distribution, cable paths, and cable design for operation in a 5 T magnetic field are described.

The Mu3e experiment: Toward the construction of an HV-MAPS vertex detector

The Mu3e experiment searches for the lepton flavor violating decay $μ^+~\rightarrow~e^+~e^+~e^-$ with an ultimate aimed sensitivity of 1 event in $10^{16}$ decays. Recent status of FPCCD vertex detector R&D

The Fine Pixel CCD (FPCCD) is one of the candidate sensor technologies for the ILC vertex detector. It will be located near interaction point and require high radiation tolerance. It will thus be operated at -40 degree C to improve radiation tolerance. The upgrade of the LHCb Vertex Locator

The LHCb experiment is set for a significant upgrade, which will be ready for Run 3 of the LHC in 2020. Mechanics, readout and cooling systems of the Mu3e experiment

Mu3e is an upcoming experiment at Paul Scherrer Institut in the search for the strongly suppressed decay of $μ\rightarrow eee$. It will use an ultra-lightweight silicon pixel detector using thinned HV-CMOS MAPS chips. Vertex-Detector R&D for CLIC

A detector concept based on hybrid planar pixel-detector technology is under development for the CLIC vertex detector. It comprises fast, low-power and small-pitch readout ASICs implemented in 65 nm CMOS technology (CLICpix) coupled to ultra-thin sensors via low-mass interconnects. The power dissipation of the readout chips is reduced by means of power pulsing, allowing for a cooling system based on forced gas flow. In this paper the CLIC vertex-detector requirements are reviewed and the current status of R&D on sensors, readout and detector integration is presented.

Performance of the LHCb Vertex Detector Alignment Algorithm determined with Beam Test Data

LHCb is the dedicated heavy flavour experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The partially assembled silicon vertex locator (VELO) of the LHCb experiment has been tested in a beam test. The data from this beam test have been used to determine the performance of the VELO alignment algorithm. The relative alignment of the two silicon sensors in a module and the relative alignment of the modules has been extracted.
