Mrk938 is a luminous infrared galaxy in the local Universe believed to be the remnant of a galaxy merger. It shows a Seyfert 2 nucleus and intense star formation according to optical spectroscopic observations. We have studied this galaxy using new Herschel far-IR imaging data in addition to archival X-ray, UV, optical, near-IR and mid-IR data. Mid- and far-IR data are crucial to characterise the starburst contribution, allowing us to shed new light on its nature and to study the coexistence of AGN and starburst activity in the local Universe. The decomposition of the mid-IR Spitzer spectrum shows that the AGN bolometric contribution to the mid-IR and total infrared luminosity is small (Lbol(AGN)/LIR~0.02), which agrees with previous estimations. We have characterised the physical nature of its strong infrared emission and constrained it to a relatively compact emitting region of <2kpc. It is in this obscured region where most of the current star formation activity is taking place as expected for LIRGs. We have used Herschel imaging data for the first time to constrain the cold dust emission with unprecedented accuracy. We have fitted the integrated far-IR spectral energy distribution and derived the properties of the dust, obtaining a dust mass of 3x10^7Msun. The far-IR is dominated by emission at 35K, consistent with dust heated by the on-going star formation activity.
We are presenting new results on kinematics and structure of the Mrk 334 Seyfert galaxy. Panoramic (3D) spectroscopy is performed at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences using the MPFS integral-field spectrograph and scanning Fabry--Perot interferometer. The deep images have revealed that Mrk 334 is observed during the final stage of its merging with a massive companion. A possible mass ratio ranges from 1/5 to 1/3. The merger has triggered mass redistribution in the disk resulting in an intensification of nuclear activity and in a burst…
(Abridged) Aims: By means of optical Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) observations, we aim to disentangle and characterize the starburst component in the BCD Mrk 1418. In particular we propose to study the stellar and ionized gas morphology, to investigate the ionization mechanism(s) acting in the interstellar medium, to derive the physical parameters and abundances of the ionized gas. Methods: IFS observations of Mrk 1418 were carried out with PMAS at the 3.5 m telescope at CAHA. The central 16"x16" were mapped. From these data we built maps of the most prominent emission lines, namely [OII]…
We present an integral field spectroscopic study of the central 2x2 kpc^2 of the blue compact dwarf galaxy Mrk 409, observed with the Potsdam MultiAperture Spectrophotometer. This study focuses on the morphology, two-dimensional chemical abundance pattern, excitation properties and kinematics of the ionized interstellar medium in the starburst component. We also investigate the nature of the extended ring of ionized gas emission surrounding the bright nuclear starburst region of Mrk 409. PMAS spectra of selected regions along the ring, interpreted with evolutionary and population synthesis mod…
We present a HST multiband analysis of the large population of star clusters in the blue compact galaxy (BCG) Mrk 930. We have reconstructed the spectral energy distributions of the star clusters and estimated age, mass, and extinction for a representative sample. We observe a very young cluster population with 70% of the systems formed less than 10 Myr ago. The peak in the star cluster age distribution at 4 Myr is corroborated by the presence of Wolf-Rayet spectral features, and by the observed optical and IR lines ratios [OIII]/H_beta and [NeIII]/[NeII]. The recovered extinction in these ver…
Using the IRAM 30-m telescope, CN and CO isotopologues have been measured toward the central regions of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253 and the prototypical ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk231. In NGC253, the 12C/13C ratio is 40+-10. Assuming that the ratio also holds for the CO emitting gas, this yields 16O/18O = 145+-36 and 16O/17O = 1290+-365 and a 32S/34S ratio close to that measured for the local interstellar medium (20-25). No indication for vibrationally excited CN is found. Peak line intensity ratios between NGC253 and Mrk231 are ~100 for 12C16O and 12C18O J=1-0, while the ratio fo…
In this first paper on the results of our Herschel PACS survey of local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), as part of our SHINING survey of local galaxies, we present far-infrared spectroscopy of Mrk 231, the most luminous of the local ULIRGs, and a type 1 broad absorption line AGN. For the first time in a ULIRG, all observed far-infrared fine-structure lines in the PACS range were detected and all were found to be deficient relative to the far infrared luminosity by 1 - 2 orders of magnitude compared with lower luminosity galaxies. The deficits are similar to those for the mid-infrared…
There is X-ray, optical, and mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopic evidence that the late-stage ultraluminous infrared galaxy merger Mrk 273 hosts a powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN). However, the exact location of the AGN and the nature of the nuclei have been difficult to determine due to dust obscuration and the limited wavelength coverage of available high-resolution data. Here we present near-infrared integral-field spectra and images of the nuclear region of Mrk 273 taken with OSIRIS and NIRC2 on the Keck II Telescope with laser guide star adaptive optics. We observe three spatiall…
Previous ground based observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 78 revealed a double set of emission lines, similar to those seen in several AGN from recent surveys. Are the double lines due to two AGN with different radial velocities in the same galaxy, or are they due to mass outflows from a single AGN?We present a study of the outflowing ionized gas in the resolved narrow-line region (NLR) of Mrk 78 using observations from Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Faint Object Camera (FOC) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope(HST) as part of an ongoing project to determine the kinematics …
The possibility is explored that accretion on an intermediate mass black hole contributes to the ionisation of the interstellar medium of the Compact Blue Dwarf galaxy MRK996. Chandra observations set tight upper limits (99.7 per cent confidence level) in both the X-ray luminosity of the posited AGN, Lx(2-10keV)<3e40erg/s, and the black hole mass, <1e4/λMsolar, where λ, is the Eddington ratio. The X-ray luminosity upper limit is insufficient to explain the high ionisation line [OIV]25.89μm, which is observed in the mid-infrared spectrum of the MRK996 and is proposed as evidence for AGN activit…
We have mapped the gaseous kinematics and the emission-line flux distributions and ratios from the inner ~680pc radius of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk79, using two-dimensional (2D) near-IR J- and Kl-band spectra obtained with the Gemini instrument NIFS at a spatial resolution of ~100pc and velocity resolution of ~40km/s. The molecular hydrogen flux distribution presents two spiral arms extending by ~700pc, one to the north and another to the south of the nucleus, with an excitation indicating heating by X-rays from the central source. The low velocity dispersion (sigma~50km/s) and rotation pattern…
We investigate the fraction of starbursts, starburst-AGN composites, Seyferts, and LINERs as a function of infrared luminosity (L_IR) and merger progress for ~500 infrared-selected galaxies. Using the new optical classifications afforded by the extremely large data set of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we find that the fraction of LINERs in IR-selected samples is rare (< 5%) compared with other spectral types. The lack of strong infrared emission in LINERs is consistent with recent optical studies suggesting that LINERs contain AGN with lower accretion rates than in Seyfert galaxies. Most previ…
We present the results of infrared L-band (3-4 micron) slit spectroscopy of 30 PG QSOs at z < 0.17, the representative sample of local high-luminosity, optically selected AGNs. The 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature is used to probe nuclear (< a few kpc) starburst activity and to investigate the connections between AGNs and nuclear starbursts in PG QSOs. The 3.3 micron PAH emission is detected in the individual spectra of 5/30 of the observed PG QSOs. We construct a composite spectrum of PAH-undetected PG QSOs and discern the presence of the 3.3 micron PAH emissi…
We present multi-wavelength observations that trace more than 40 years in the life of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in Mrk 590, traditionally known as a classic Seyfert 1 galaxy. From spectra recently obtained from HST, Chandra, and the Large Binocular Telescope, we find that the activity in the nucleus of Mrk 590 has diminished so significantly that the continuum luminosity is a factor of 100 lower than the peak luminosity probed by our long baseline observations. Furthermore, the broad emission lines, once prominent in the UV/optical spectrum, have all but disappeared. Since AGN type is …
We present velocity-resolved reverberation results for five active galactic nuclei. We recovered velocity-delay maps using the maximum-entropy method for four objects: Mrk 335, Mrk 1501, 3C120, and PG2130+099. For the fifth, Mrk 6, we were only able to measure mean time delays in different velocity bins of the Hbeta emission line. The four velocity-delay maps show unique dynamical signatures for each object. For 3C120, the Balmer lines show kinematic signatures consistent with both an inclined disk and infalling gas, but the HeII 4686 emission line is suggestive only of inflow. The Balmer line…
We apply a simple model, tested on local ULIRGs, to disentangle the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst contributions in submillimiter and 24um-selected ULIRGs observed with the Spitzer-IRS spectrometer. We quantitatively estimate the average AGN contribution to the stacked 6-8um rest-frame spectra of these sources in different luminosity and redshift ranges, and, under the assumption of similar infrared-to-bolometric ratios as in local ULIRGs, the relative AGN/starburst contributions to the total infrared luminosity. Though the starburst component is always dominant in submillimeter-s…
We investigate radio-mode AGN activity among post-starburst galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to determine whether AGN feedback may be responsible for the cessation of star formation. Based on radio morphology and radio-loudness from the FIRST and NVSS data, we separate objects with radio activity due to an AGN from ongoing residual star formation. Of 513 SDSS galaxies with strong A-star spectra, 12 objects have 21-cm flux density above 1 mJy. These galaxies do not show optical AGN emission lines. Considering that the lifetime of radio emission is much shorter than the typical time-sc…
We present spectroscopic results for all galaxies observed with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) which also have total infrared fluxes f(ir) measured with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), also using AKARI photometry when available. Infrared luminosities and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from 8 um to 160 um are compared to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission from starburst galaxies or mid-infrared dust continuum from AGN at rest frame wavelengths ~ 8 um. A total of 301 spectra are analyzed for which IRS and IRAS include the same unresolved source, as measured…
The main purpose of this research was to investigate how energetic processes associated with Active Galactic Nuclei are related to those due to nuclear or circumnuclear star formation activity. Photometric and spectroscopic data were used to discriminate these processes in a sample of starburst, infrared galaxies and AGNs. Herein, we propose new diagnostic diagrams based on the 7.7 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission band, the L(MIR, FIR) infrared ratio and the q parameter. The diagnostic diagrams allow us to discriminate the behavior of quasars and Seyfert 1-Seyfert 2 galaxies from st…

We have discovered a binary AGN in the galaxy Mrk 739 using Chandra and Swift BAT. We find two luminous L_2-10 keV=1.1*10^43 and 1.0*10^42 erg/s, unresolved nuclei with a projected separation of 3.4 kpc (5.8\pm0.1) coincident with two bulge components in the optical image. The western X-ray source (Mrk 739W) is highly variable (2.5x) during the 4-hour Chandra observation and has a very hard spectrum consistent with an AGN. While the eastern component was already known to be an AGN based on the presence of broad optical recombination lines, Mrk 739W shows no evidence of being an AGN in optical,…
We estimate the fraction of AGNs hosted in starburst galaxies (f_bursty) as a function of the AGN luminosity predicted under the assumption that starburst events and AGN activity are triggered by galaxy interactions during their merging histories. The latter are described through Monte Carlo realizations, and are connected to star formation and BH accretion using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation in a cosmological framework. The predicted fraction f_bursty increases steeply with AGN luminosity from <0.2 at L_X < 10^44 erg/s to >0.9 at L_X > 10^45 erg/s over a wide redshift interval fro…
Galactic bars are the most important driver of secular evolution in galaxies. They can efficiently drive gas into the central kiloparsec of galaxies, thus feed circumnuclear starbursts, and possibly help to fuel AGN. The connection between bars and AGN activities has been actively debated in the past two decades. Previous work used fairly small samples and often lacked a proper control sample. They reported conflicting results on the correlation between bars and AGN activity. Here we revisit the bar-AGN and bar-starburst connections using the analysis of bars in a large sample of about 2000 SD…
We present dynamical modeling of the broad line region (BLR) in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 50 using reverberation mapping data taken as part of the Lick AGN Monitoring Project (LAMP) 2011. We model the reverberation mapping data directly, constraining the geometry and kinematics of the BLR, as well as deriving a black hole mass estimate that does not depend on a normalizing factor or virial coefficient. We find that the geometry of the BLR in Mrk 50 is a nearly face-on thick disk, with a mean radius of 9.6(+1.2,-0.9) light days, a width of the BLR of 6.9(+1.2,-1.1) light days, and a disk opening…
We present BayeSED, a general purpose tool for doing Bayesian analysis of SEDs by using whatever pre-existing model SED libraries or their linear combinations. The artificial neural networks (ANNs), principal component analysis (PCA) and multimodal nested sampling (MultiNest) techniques are employed to allow a highly efficient sampling of posterior distribution and the calculation of Bayesian evidence. As a demonstration, we apply this tool to a sample of hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRGs). The Bayesian evidences obtained for a pure Starburst, a pure AGN, and a linear combination of Star…
We present the results of our 600 ks RGS observation as part of the multiwavelength campaign on Mrk 509. The very high quality of the spectrum allows us to investigate the ionized outflow with an unprecedented accuracy due to the long exposure and the use of the RGS multipointing mode. We detect multiple absorption lines from the interstellar medium and from the ionized absorber in Mrk 509. A number of emission components are also detected, including broad emission lines consistent with an origin in the broad line region, the narrow OVII forbidden emission line and also (narrow) radiative reco…
Recent models for the inner structure of active galactic nuclei (AGN) advocate the presence of a radiatively accelerated, dusty outflow launched from the outer regions of the accretion disk. Here we present the first near-infrared (near-IR) variable (rms) spectrum for the high-luminosity, nearby AGN Mrk 876. We find that it tracks the accretion disk spectrum out to longer wavelengths than the mean spectrum due to a reduced dust emission. The implied outer accretion disk radius is consistent with the infrared results predicted by a contemporaneous optical accretion disk reverberation mapping ca…
Recent well resolved numerical simulations of AGN feedback have shown that its effects on the host galaxy may be not only negative but also positive. In the late gas poor phase, AGN feedback blows the gas away and terminates star formation. However, in the gas-rich phase(s), AGN outflows trigger star formation by over-compressing cold dense gas and thus provide positive feedback on their hosts. In this paper we study this AGN-triggered starburst effect. We show that star formation rate in the burst increases until the star formation feedback counteracts locally the AGN outflow compression. Glo…
We present an integral field spectroscopic study of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7130, a known starburst-AGN composite galaxy. We employ standard emission line ratio diagnostics and maps of velocity dispersion and velocity field to investigate how the dominant ionising sources change as a function of radius. From the signatures of both star formation and AGN activity we show that NGC 7130 is a remarkably clean case of starburst-AGN mixing. We find a smooth transition from AGN dominated emission in the centre to pure star forming activity further out, from which we can estimate the r…
Here we present an analysis of spectro-polarimetric observations of type 1.5 AGN Mrk 6, performed with 6m telescope SAO RAN in 12 epochs (2010 -- 2013). Additionally, the inter-stellar mater (ISM) polarization has been observed and its contribution to the AGN spectral polarization is taken into account. We measured Stokes parameters and determined the polarization parameters in 12 spectra with and without correction for the ISM polarization. We estimated the time lag between the unpolarized and polarized continuum flux variation of about ~2 days, that indicates a compact scattering region whic…
Post-starbursts are galaxies in transition from the blue cloud to the red sequence. Although they are rare today, integrated over time they may be an important pathway to the red sequence. This work uses SDSS, GALEX, and WISE observations to identify the evolutionary sequence from starbursts to fully quenched post-starbursts in the narrow mass range $\log M(M_\odot) = 10.3-10.7$, and identifies "transiting" post-starbursts which are intermediate between these two populations. In this mass range, $\sim 0.3\%$ of galaxies are starbursts, $\sim 0.1\%$ are quenched post-starbursts, and $\sim 0.5\%…
Massive AGN-driven outflows are invoked by AGN-galaxy co-evolutionary models to suppress both star formation and black hole accretion. Massive molecular outflows have recently been revealed in some AGN hosts. However, the physical properties and structure of these AGN-driven molecular outflows are still poorly constrained. Here we present new IRAM PdBI observations of Mrk231, the closest quasar known, targeting both the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) transitions. We detect broad wings in both transitions, tracing a massive molecular outflow with velocities up to 800 km/s. The wings are spatially resolved…
Galactic outflows can be powered either by nuclear starbursts (SB) or active galactic nuclei (AGN). It has been argued that extreme starbursts can power extreme outflows, without the need to invoke AGN feedback. However, contributions from past and/or hidden AGN activity cannot be ruled out. Here, we constrain the potential role of the central black hole in driving powerful outflows in starburst galaxies (with no sign of ongoing AGN activity). We examine whether the galactic outflows can be explained by AGN luminosity evolution in the framework of our AGN `radiative dusty feedback' scenario. W…
