We examine eight young stellar objects in the OMC-2 star forming region based on observations from the SOFIA/FORCAST early science phase, the Spitzer Space Telescope, the Herschel Space Observatory, 2MASS, APEX, and other results in the literature. We show the spectral energy distributions of these objects from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths, and compare the SEDs with those of sheet collapse models of protostars and circumstellar disks. Four of the objects can be modelled as protostars with infalling envelopes, two as young stars surrounded by disks, and the remaining two objects have double-peaked SEDs. We model the double-peaked sources as binaries containing a young star with a disk and a protostar. The six most luminous sources are found in a dense group within a 0.15 x 0.25 pc region; these sources have luminosities ranging from 300 L_sun to 20 L_sun. The most embedded source (OMC-2 FIR 4) can be fit by a class 0 protostar model having a luminosity of ~50 L_sun and mass infall rate of ~10^-4 solar masses per year.
We present 37\micron\ imaging of the S140 complex of infrared sources centered on IRS1 made with the FORCAST camera on SOFIA. These observations are the longest wavelength imaging to resolve clearly the three main sources seen at shorter wavelengths, IRS 1, 2 and 3, and are nearly at the diffraction limit of the 2.5-m telescope. We also obtained a small number of images at 11 and 31\micron\ that are useful for flux measurement. Our images cover the area of several strong sub-mm sources seen in the area -- SMM 1, 2, and 3 -- that are not coincident with any mid-infrared sources and are not visi…
We present SOFIA/FORCAST imaging of the circumstellar dust shells surrounding the luminous blue variable (LBV) candidates MN 90 and HD 168625 to quantify the mineral abundances of the dust and to constrain the evolutionary state of these objects. Our image at 37.1 micron of MN 90 shows a limb-brightened, spherical dust shell. A least-squares fit to the spectral energy distribution of MN 90 yields a dust temperature of 59 \pm 10 K, with the peak of the emission at 42.7 micron. Using 2-Dust radiative transfer code, we estimate for MN 90 that mass-loss occurred at a rate of (7.3 \pm 0.4)x10^-7 M_…
The BN/KL region of the Orion Nebula is the nearest region of high mass star formation in our galaxy. As such, it has been the subject of intense investigation at a variety of wavelengths, which have revealed it to be brightest in the infrared to sub-mm wavelength regime. Using the newly commissioned SOFIA airborne telescope and its 5-40 micron camera FORCAST, images of the entire BN/KL complex have been acquired. The 31.5 and 37.1 micron images represent the highest resolution observations (<=4") ever obtained of this region at these wavelengths. These observations reveal that the BN object i…
We present a SOFIA FORCAST grism spectroscopic survey to examine the mineralogy of the circumstellar dust in a sample of post-asymptotic giant branch yellow supergiants that are believed to be the precursors of planetary nebulae. Our mineralogical model of each star indicates the presence of both carbon rich and oxygen rich dust species-contrary to simple dredge-up models-with a majority of the dust in the form of amorphous carbon and graphite. The oxygen rich dust is primarily in the form of amorphous silicates. The spectra do not exhibit any prominent crystalline silicate emission features. …
We present mid-IR (19 - 37 microns) imaging observations of S106 from SOFIA/FORCAST, complemented with IR observations from Spitzer/IRAC (3.6 - 8.0 microns), IRTF/MIRLIN (11.3 and 12.5 microns), and Herschel/PACS (70 and 160 microns). We use these observations, observations in the literature, and radiation transfer modeling to study the heating and composition of the warm (~ 100 K) dust in the region. The dust is heated radiatively by the source S106 IR, with little contributions from grain-electron collisions and Ly-alpha radiation. The dust luminosity is >~ (9.02 +/- 1.01) x 10^4 L_sun, cons…
We present a new SOFIA/FORCAST mid-IR survey of luminous protostars and crowded star-forming environments in Cygnus X, the nearest million-solar mass molecular cloud complex. We derive bolometric luminosities for over 1000 sources in the region with these new data in combination with extant Spitzer and UKIDSS photometry, with 63 new luminous protostar candidates identified by way of the high quality SOFIA/FORCAST data. By including FORCAST data, we construct protostellar luminosity functions (PLFs) with improved completeness at the high luminosity end. The PLFs are well described by a power la…
With the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) routinely operating science flights, we demonstrate that observations with the Faint Object infraRed CAmera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST) can provide reliable estimates of the internal luminosities, $L_{\rm int}$, of protostars. We have developed a technique to estimate $L_{\rm int}$ using a pair of FORCAST filters: one "short-wavelength" filter centered within 19.7-25.3 $μ$m, and one "long-wavelength" filter within 31.5-37.1 $μ$m. These $L_{\rm int}$ estimates are reliable to within 30-40% for 67% of protostars and to withi…
We present mid-infrared spectra from our continued monitoring of R Aquarii, the nearest symbiotic Mira, using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). New photometric and spectroscipic data were obtained with the Faint Object infraRed CAmera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST) in 2018 and 2019 after the system had started its "eclipse", during which it became two magnitudes fainter in the visual. The mid-IR flux, in particular the 10 mu-m silicate feature, have strengthened compared with the previous cycles. Radiative transfer models for the circumstellar dust emission were …
Since their discovery, the Quintuplet proper members (QPMs) have been somewhat mysterious in nature. Originally dubbed the "cocoon stars" due to their cool featureless spectra, high-resolution near-infrared imaging observations have shown that at least two of the objects exhibit "pinwheel" nebulae consistent with binary systems with a carbon-rich Wolf-Rayet star and O/B companion. In this paper, we present 19.7, 25.2, 31.5, and 37.1 $μ$m observations of the QPMs (with an angular resolution of 3.2-3.8") taken with the Faint Object Infrared Camera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST) in conjunction…
We present infrared observations of the ultra-compact H II region W3(OH) made by the FORCAST instrument aboard SOFIA and by Spitzer/IRAC. We contribute new wavelength data to the spectral energy distribution, which constrains the optical depth, grain size distribution, and temperature gradient of the dusty shell surrounding the H II region. We model the dust component as a spherical shell containing an inner cavity with radius ~ 600 AU, irradiated by a central star of type O9 and temperature ~ 31,000 K. The total luminosity of this system is 71,000 L_solar. An observed excess of 2.2 - 4.5 micr…
We report the SOFIA/HAWC+ band D (154$\,μ$m) and E (214$\,μ$m) polarimetric observations of the filamentary structure OMC-3 that is part of the Orion molecular cloud. The polarization pattern is uniform for both bands and parallel to the filament structure. The polarization degree decreases toward regions with high intensity for both bands, revealing a so called "polarization hole." We identified an optical depth effect in which polarized emission and extinction act as counteracting mechanisms as a potential contributor to this phenomenon. Assuming that the detected polarization is caused by t…
We present our second set of results from our mid-infrared imaging survey of Milky Way Giant HII regions. We used the FORCAST instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy to obtain 20 and 37$μ$m images of the central ~10'X10' area of M17. We investigate the small- and large-scale properties of M17 using our data in conjunction with previous multi-wavelength observations. The spectral energy distributions of individual compact sources were constructed with Spitzer-IRAC, SOFIA-FORCAST, and Herschel-PACS photometry data and fitted with massive young stellar object (MYSO) mod…
This is the fourth paper exploring the infrared properties of giant HII regions with the FORCAST instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Our survey utilizes the census of 56 Milky Way giant HII regions identified by Conti & Crowther (2004), and in this paper we present the 20 and 37 micron imaging data we have obtained from SOFIA for sources Sgr D and W42. Based upon the SOFIA data and other multi-wavelength data, we derive and discuss the detailed physical properties of the individual compact sources and sub-regions as well as the large scale properties of …
We present our third set of results from our mid-infrared imaging survey of Milky Way Giant HII (GHII) regions with our detailed analysis of W49A, one of the most distant, yet most luminous, GHII regions in the Galaxy. We used the FORCAST instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) to obtain 20 and 37$μ$m images of the entire ~5.0' x 3.5' infrared-emitting area of W49A at a spatial resolution of ~3". Utilizing these SOFIA data in conjunction with previous multi-wavelength observations from the near-infrared to radio, including Spitzer-IRAC and Herschel-PACS archi…
We present $\sim10-40\,μ$m SOFIA-FORCAST images of 14 intermediate-mass protostar candidates as part of the SOFIA Massive (SOMA) Star Formation Survey. We build spectral energy distributions (SEDs), also utilizing archival Spitzer, Herschel and IRAS data. We then fit the SEDs with radiative transfer (RT) models of Zhang & Tan (2018), based on Turbulent Core Accretion theory, to estimate key protostellar properties. With the addition of these intermediate-mass sources, SOMA protostars span luminosities from $\sim10^{2}-10^{6}\:L_{\odot}$, current protostellar masses from $\sim0.5-30\:M_{\odot}$…
We present $\sim10-40\,μ$m SOFIA-FORCAST images of 11 isolated protostars as part of the SOFIA Massive (SOMA) Star Formation Survey, with this morphological classification based on 37 $μ$m imaging. We develop an automated method to define source aperture size using the gradient of its background-subtracted enclosed flux and apply this to build spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We fit the SEDs with radiative transfer models, developed within the framework of turbulent core accretion (TCA) theory, to estimate key protostellar properties. Here, we release the sedcreator python package that ca…
We present images and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in three star-forming H II regions of the Large Magellanic Cloud: N159A, N159 Papillon, and N160. We use photometry from SOFIA/FORCAST at 25.3--37.1 um to constrain model fits to the SEDs and determine luminosities, ages, and dust content of the embedded YSOs and their local environments. By placing these sources on mid-infrared color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, we analyze their dust properties and consider their evolutionary status. Since each object in the FORCAST images has an obvious …
We present new SOFIA-FORCAST observations obtained in Feburary 2016 of the archetypal outbursting low mass young stellar object FU Orionis, and compare the continuum, solid state, and gas properties with mid-IR data obtained at the same wavelengths in 2004 with Spitzer-IRS. In this study, we conduct the first mid-IR spectroscopic comparison of an FUor over a long time period. Over a 12 year period, UBVR monitoring indicates that FU Orionis has continued its steady decrease in overall brightness by ~ 14%. We find that this decrease in luminosity occurs only at wavelengths < 20 microns. In parti…
The equatorial ring of Supernova (SN) 1987A has been exposed to forward shocks from the SN blast wave, and it has been suggested that these forward shocks have been causing on-going destruction of dust in the ring. We obtained SOFIA FORCAST 11.1, 19.7 and 31.5 micron photometry of SN\,1987A in 2016. Compared with Spitzer measurements 10 years earlier, the 31.5 micron flux has significantly increased. The excess at 31.5 micron appears to be related to the Herschel 70 micron excess, which was detected 5 years earlier. The dust mass needed to account for the the 31.5--70 micron excess is 3--7x10^…
We present multi-wavelength images observed with SOFIA-FORCAST from $\sim$10 to 40 $μ$m of seven high luminosity massive protostars, as part of the SOFIA Massive (SOMA) Star Formation Survey. Source morphologies at these wavelengths appear to be influenced by outflow cavities and extinction from dense gas surrounding the protostars. Using these images, we build spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the protostars, also including archival data from Spitzer, Herschel and other facilities. Radiative transfer (RT) models of Zhang & Tan (2018), based on Turbulent Core Accretion theory, are then f…

We introduce new analysis methods for studying the star cluster formation processes in Orion A, especially examining the scenario of a cloud-cloud collision. We utilize the CARMA-NRO Orion survey $^{13}$CO (1-0) data to compare molecular gas to the properties of YSOs from the SDSS III IN-SYNC survey. We show that the increase of $v_{\rm 13CO} - v_{\rm YSO}$ and $Σ$ scatter of older YSOs can be signals of cloud-cloud collision. SOFIA-upGREAT 158$μ$m [CII] archival data toward the northern part of Orion A are also compared to the $^{13}$CO data to test whether the position and velocity offsets b…
MWC 297 is a young, early-type star driving an ionized outflow and surrounded by warm, entrained dust. Previous analyses of near- and mid-IR interferometric images suggest that the emission at these wavelengths arises from a compact accretion disk with a moderate ($i < 40$ degrees) inclination. We have obtained 5-40 micron images of MWC 297 with FORCAST on SOFIA, as well as near-infrared spectra acquired with SpeX on the IRTF and radio data obtained with the VLA and BIMA, and supplemented these with archival data from Herschel/PACS and SPIRE. The FORCAST images, combined with the VLA data, ind…
We present an overview and first results of the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy Massive (SOMA) Star Formation Survey, which is using the FORCAST instrument to image massive protostars from $\sim10$--$40\:\rmμ\rm{m}$. These wavelengths trace thermal emission from warm dust, which in Core Accretion models mainly emerges from the inner regions of protostellar outflow cavities. Dust in dense core envelopes also imprints characteristic extinction patterns at these wavelengths, causing intensity peaks to shift along the outflow axis and profiles to become more symmetric at longer wa…
In recent years, dramatic outbursts have been identified toward massive protostars via infrared and millimeter dust continuum and molecular maser emission. The longest lived outburst ($>6$ yr) persists in NGC6334I-MM1, a deeply-embedded object with no near-IR counterpart. Using FORCAST and HAWC+ on SOFIA, we have obtained the first mid-infrared images of this field since the outburst began. Despite being undetected in pre-outburst ground-based 18 $μ$m images, MM1 is now the brightest region at all three wavelengths (25, 37, and 53 $μ$m), exceeding the ultracompact HII region MM3 (NGC6334F). Co…
Radiative transfer calculations of massive star formation are presented. These are based on the Turbulent Core Model of McKee & Tan and self-consistently included a hydrostatic core, an inside-out expansion wave, a zone of free-falling rotating collapse, wide-angle dust-free outflow cavities, an active accretion disk, and a massive protostar. For the first time for such models, an optically thick inner gas disk extends inside the dust destruction front. This is important to conserve the accretion energy naturally and for its shielding effect on the outer region of the disk and envelope. The si…
