We report the detection of thermal emission from the hot Jupiter WASP-3b in the KS band, using a newly developed guiding scheme for the WIRC instrument at the Palomar Hale 200in telescope. Our new guiding scheme has improved the telescope guiding precision by a factor of ~5-7, significantly reducing the correlated systematics in the measured light curves. This results in the detection of a secondary eclipse with depth of 0.181%\pm0.020% (9-σ) - a significant improvement in WIRC's photometric precision and a demonstration of the capability of Palomar/WIRC to produce high quality measurements of exoplanetary atmospheres. Our measured eclipse depth cannot be explained by model atmospheres with heat redistribution but favor a pure radiative equilibrium case with no redistribution across the surface of the planet. Our measurement also gives an eclipse phase center of 0.5045\pm0.0020, corresponding to an ecosω of 0.0070\pm0.0032. This result is consistent with a circular orbit, although it also suggests the planet's orbit might be slightly eccentric. The possible non-zero eccentricity provides insight into the tidal circularization process of the star-planet system, but also might have been caused by a second low-mass planet in the system, as suggested by a previous transit timing variation study. More secondary eclipse observations, especially at multiple wavelengths, are necessary to determine the temperature-pressure profile of the planetary atmosphere and shed light on its orbital eccentricity.
This work presents a re-analysis of the spectroscopic phase-curve observations of the ultra hot Jupiter WASP-103 b obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Spitzer Telescope. Traditional 1D and unified 1.5D spectral retrieval techniques are employed, allowing to map the thermal structure and the abundances of trace gases in this planet as a function of longitude. On the day-side, the atmosphere is found to have a strong thermal inversion, with indications of thermal dissociation traced by continuum H- opacity. Water vapor is found across the entire atmosphere but with depleted abun…
We present a re-analysis of transit depths of KELT-19Ab, WASP-156b, and WASP-121b, including data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The large $\sim$21$\arcsec$ TESS pixels and point spread function result in significant contamination of the stellar flux by nearby objects. We use Gaia data to fit for and remove this contribution, providing general-purpose software for this correction. We find all three sources have a larger inclination, compared to earlier work. For WASP-121b, we find significantly smaller values (13.5 degrees) of the inclination when using the 30 minutes c…
Ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) are expected to possess temperature inversion layers in their dayside atmospheres. Recent thermal emission observations have discovered several atomic and molecular species along with temperature inversions in UHJs. We observed the thermal emission spectra of two UHJs (WASP-33b and WASP-189b) with the GIANO-B high-resolution near-infrared spectrograph. Using the cross-correlation technique, we detected carbon monoxide (CO) in the dayside atmospheres of both planets. The detected CO lines are in emission, which agrees with previous discoveries of iron emission lines an…
Secondary eclipse observations of hot Jupiters can reveal both their compositions and thermal structures. Previous observations have shown a diversity of hot Jupiter eclipse spectra, including absorption features, emission features, and featureless blackbody-like spectra. We present a secondary eclipse spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-77Ab observed between $1-5$ $μ$m with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The HST observations show signs of water absorption indicative of a non-inverted thermal structure. We fit the data with both a one-dimensional free retrieval …
Observations of ultra-hot Jupiters indicate the existence of thermal inversion in their atmospheres with day-side temperatures greater than 2200 K. Various physical mechanisms such as non-local thermal equilibrium, cloud formation, disequilibrium chemistry, ionisation, hydrodynamic waves and associated energy, have been omitted in previous spectral retrievals while they play an important role on the thermal structure of their upper atmospheres. We aim at exploring the atmospheric properties of WASP-19b to understand its largely featureless thermal spectra using a state-of-the-art atmosphere cod…

ULTRACAM z'-band Detection of the Secondary Eclipse of WASP-12b
We present broad-band photometry of eleven planetary transits of the hot Jupiter WASP-74b, using three medium-class telescopes and employing the telescope-defocussing technique. Most of the transits were monitored through I filters and one was simultaneously observed in five optical (U, g', r', i', z') and three near infrared (J, H, K) passbands, for a total of 18 light curves. We also obtained new high-resolution spectra of the host star. We used these new data to review the orbital and physical properties of the WASP-74 planetary system. We were able to better constrain the main system chara…
Here we present a thermal emission spectrum of WASP-79b, obtained via Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 G141 observations as part of the PanCET program. As we did not observe the ingress or egress of WASP-79b's secondary eclipse, we consider two scenarios: a fixed mid-eclipse time based on the expected occurrence time, and a mid-eclipse time as a free parameter. In both scenarios, we can measure thermal emission from WASP-79b from 1.1 to 1.7 $μ$m at 2.4$σ$ confidence consistent with a 1900 K brightness temperature for the planet. We combine our observations with Spitzer dayside photom…
Atmospheres of a number of ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) with temperatures $\gtrsim$2000~K have been observed recently. Many of these planets show largely featureless thermal spectra in the near-infrared observed with the HST WFC3 spectrograph (1.1-1.7~$μ$m) even though this spectral range contains strong H$_2$O opacity. Recent works have proposed the possibility of H- opacity masking the H$_2$O feature and/or thermal dissociation of H$_2$O causing its apparent depletion at the high temperatures of UHJs. In this work we test these hypotheses using observations of the exoplanet WASP-18b as a case s…
The atmospheric structure of WASP-12b has been hotly contested for years, with disagreements on the presence of a thermal inversion as well as the carbon-to-oxygen ratio, C/O, due to retrieved abundances of H2O, CO2, and other included species such as HCN and C2H2. Previously, these difficult-to-diagnose discrepancies have been attributed to model differences; assumptions in these models were thought to drive retrievals toward different answers. Here, we show that some of these differences are independent of model assumptions and are instead due to subtle differences in the inputs, such as the…
We present the full phase curve analysis of the ultrahot Jupiter WASP-121b ($R_p \simeq 1.865 R_J, M_p \simeq 1.184 M_J $) using observations from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and a comparison between our results with previous studies on this target. Our comprehensive phase curve model includes primary transit, secondary eclipse, thermal emission, reflection, and ellipsoidal tidal distortion, which are jointly fit to extract the information of all parameters simultaneously from the data sets. We also evaluated and calculated the amplitude of Doppler beaming to be $\sim 2$ p…

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to revolutionize the field of exoplanets. The broad wavelength coverage and the high sensitivity of its instruments will allow characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres with unprecedented precision. Following the Call for the Cycle 1 Early Release Science Program, the Transiting Exoplanet Community was awarded time to observe several targets, including WASP-43b. The atmosphere of this hot Jupiter has been intensively observed but still harbors some mysteries, especially concerning the day-night temperature gradient, the efficiency of the atm…

Ground-based observations of the secondary transit in the 2MASS K band are presented for the hot Jupiter WASP-121b. These are the first occultation observations of an extrasolar planet carried out with an instrument attached to a 1m-class telescope (SMARTS' 1.3 m). We find a highly significant transit depth of (0.228 +/- 0.023)%. Together with the Hubble Space Telescope near infrared emission spectrum, current data support more involved atmosphere models with species producing emission/absorption features, rather than simple smooth black body emission. Analysis of the time difference between t…
We present new functionality within PICASO, a state-of-the-art radiative transfer model for exoplanet and brown dwarf atmospheres, by developing a new pipeline that computes phase-resolved thermal emission (thermal phase curves) from three-dimensional (3D) models. Because PICASO is coupled to Virga, an open-source cloud code, we are able to produce cloudy phase curves with different sedimentation efficiencies ($f_{sed}$) and cloud condensate species. We present the first application of this new algorithm to hot Jupiter WASP-43b. Previous studies of the thermal emission of WASP-43b from Kataria…
