We investigate, theoretically and experimentally, absorption on an excited-state atomic transition in a thermal vapor where the lower state is coherently pumped. We find that the transition linewidth can be sub-natural, i.e. less than the combined linewidth of the lower and upper state. For the specific case of the 6P_{3/2} -> 7S_{1/2} transition in room temperature cesium vapor, we measure a minimum linewidth of 6.6 MHz compared with the natural width of 8.5 MHz. Using perturbation techniques, an expression for the complex susceptibility is obtained which provides excellent agreement with the measured spectra.
Optical two-dimensional (2D) coherent spectroscopy excels in studying coupling and dynamics in complex systems. The dynamical information can be learned from lineshape analysis to extract the corresponding linewidth. However, it is usually challenging to fit a 2D spectrum, especially when the homogeneous and inhomogeneous linewidths are comparable. We implemented a machine learning algorithm to analyze 2D spectra to retrieve homogeneous and inhomogeneous linewidths. The algorithm was trained using simulated 2D spectra with known linewidth values. The trained algorithm can analyze both simulate…
Vertical external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) augmented by intra-cavity nonlinear optical frequency conversion have emerged as an attractive light source of ultraviolet to visible light for demanding scientific applications, relative to other laser technologies. They offer high power, low phase noise, wide frequency tunability, and excellent beam quality in a simple and inexpensive system architecture. Here, we characterize the frequency stability of an intra-cavity frequency-doubled VECSEL with 690 mW of output power at 475 nm using the delayed self-heterodyne technique and direc…
We have developed and characterised a stable, narrow linewidth external-cavity laser (ECL) tunable over 100 nm around 1080 nm, using a single-angled-facet gain chip. We propose the ECL as a low-cost, high-performance alternative to fibre and diode lasers in this wavelength range and demonstrate its capability through the spectroscopy of metastable helium. Within the coarse tuning range, the wavelength can be continuously tuned over 30 pm (7.8 GHz) without mode-hopping and modulated with bandwidths up to 3 kHz (piezo) and 37(3) kHz (current). The spectral linewidth of the free-running ECL was m…
We report on observing photon recoil effects in the absorption of a single monochromatic light at 689~nm through an ultracold $^{88}$Sr gas, where the recoil frequency is comparable to natural linewidth of the narrow-line transition $5\mathrm{s^2}\, ^1\textrm{S}_0 - 5\mathrm{s}5\mathrm{p}\, ^3\textrm{P}_1$ in strontium. In the regime of high-saturation, the absorption profile becomes asymmetric due to the photon-recoil shift, which is of the same order as the natural linewidth. The lineshape is described by an extension of the optical Bloch equations including the momentum transfers to atoms d…
We describe a method to observe the dynamics of an excited-state transition in a room temperature atomic vapor using hyperfine quantum beats. Our experiment using cesium atoms consists of a pulsed excitation of the D2 transition, and continuous-wave driving of an excited-state transition from the 6P$_{3/2}$ state to the 7S$_{1/2}$ state. We observe quantum beats in the fluorescence from the 6P$_{3/2}$ state which are modified by the driving of the excited-state transition. The Fourier spectrum of the beat signal yields evidence of Autler-Townes splitting of the 6P$_{3/2}$, F = 5 hyperfine leve…
In this work we realize a narrow spectroscopic feature using a technique that we refer to as magnetically-induced optical transparency. A cold ensemble of $^{88}$Sr atoms interacts with a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity via the 7.5kHz linewidth, spin forbidden $^1$S$_0$ to $^3$P$_1$ transition. By applying a magnetic field that shifts two excited state Zeeman levels, we open a transmission window through the cavity where the collective vacuum Rabi splitting due to a single level would create destructive interference for probe transmission. The spectroscopic feature approaches the …
We generate 555.8nm light with sub-MHz linewidth through the use of laser injection-locking of a semiconductor diode at 1111.6nm, followed by frequency doubling in a resonant cavity. The integrity of the injection lock is investigated by studying an offset-beat signal between slave and master lasers, by performing spectroscopy on the $(6s)^{2}$ $^{1}S_{0}-\,(6s6p)$ $^{3}P_{1}$ transition in magneto-optically trapped ytterbium, and by demonstrating additional laser cooling of $^{171}$Yb with the 555.8nm light. For the $^{1}S_{0}-$ $^{3}P_{1}$ spectroscopy, we confirm the linear dependence betwe…
We present a laser system with a linewidth and long-term frequency stability at the 50 kHz level. It is based on a Ti:Sapphire laser emitting radiation at 882 nm which is referenced to an atomic transition. For this, the length of an evacuated transfer cavity is stabilized to a reference laser at 780 nm locked to the $^{85}$Rb D$_2$-line via modulation transfer spectroscopy. Gapless frequency tuning of the spectroscopy laser is realized using the sideband locking technique to the transfer cavity. In this configuration, the linewidth of the spectroscopy laser is derived from the transfer cavity…
We present a general analysis for determining the optimal modulation parameters for the modulation transfer spectroscopy scheme. The results are universally valid and can be applied to spectroscopy of any atomic species requiring only the knowledge of the effective linewidth $Γ_{eff}$. A signal with optimized slope and amplitude is predicted for a large modulation index $M$ and a modulation frequency comparable to the natural linewidth of the spectroscopic transition. As a result of competing practical considerations, a modulation index in the range of $3 \le M \le 10$ has been identified as o…
We report the realization and characterization using coherent population trapping (CPT) spectroscopy of an octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-coated centimeter-scale Cs vapor cell. The dual-structure of the resonance lineshape, with presence of a narrow structure line at the top of a Doppler-broadened structure, is clearly observed. The linewidth of the narrow resonance is compared to the linewidth of an evacuated Cs cell and of a buffer gas Cs cell of similar size. The Cs-OTS adsorption energy is measured to be (0.42 $\pm$ 0.03) eV, leading to a clock frequency shift rate of $2.7\times10^{-9}/$K …
A two-step, two-color laser spectroscopy technique has been used to measure the hyperfine splittings of the $8p$ excited states in $^{203}$Tl and $^{205}$Tl, as well as the $7s - 8p$ transition isotope shifts. For the case of the $8p_{3/2}$ state, our results show a hyperfine anomaly consistent with our recent measurements of other hyperfine splittings, and in disagreement with older results for this state. Our measurement of the $8p_{1/2}$ isotope shift is also in disagreement with earlier work. In this series of experiments, a UV laser was locked to the first-step transition and directed thr…
We present a new method for determining the intrinsic natural linewidth or lifetime of exceptionally long-lived optical excited states. Such transitions are key to the performance of state-of-the-art atomic clocks, have potential applications in searches for fundamental physics and gravitational wave detectors, as well as novel quantum many-body phenomena. With longer lifetime optical transitions, sensitivity is increased, but so far it has proved challenging to determine the natural lifetime of many of these long lived optical excited states because standard population decay detection techniq…
Atomic excitation to excited states in strong laser field is the key to high-order harmonic generation below ionization threshold, yet remains unclear mainly due to the lack of proper detection methods. We propose a frequency-resolved photon-electron spectroscopy technique to reconstruct population of excited states with the second delayed laser pulse. The technique utilizes Fourier transformation to separate ionization from different excited states to different positions on the spectrum. With the advantage of separation, we provide a scheme to reconstruct populations on different excited stat…
We investigate the 1140 nm magnetic dipole transition of thulium atoms trapped in solid argon and neon. These solids can be straightforwardly grown on any substrate at cryogenic temperatures, making them prime targets for surface sensing applications. Our data are well described by a splitting of the single vacuum transition into three components in both argon and neon, with each component narrower than the 0.8 nm spectrometer resolution. The lifetime of the excited states is 14.6(0.5) ms in argon and 27(3) ms in neon, shorter than in vacuum or in solid helium. We also collected visible laser-…

We report on photoassociation spectroscopy probing the $c^3Σ_{1}^+$ potential of the bi-alkali NaCs molecule, identifying eleven vibrational lines between $v' = 0$ and $v' = 25$ of the excited $c^3Σ_{1}^+$ potential, and resolving their rotational and hyperfine structure. The observed lines are assigned by fitting to an effective Hamiltonian model of the excited state structure with rotational and hyperfine constants as free parameters. We discuss unexpected broadening of select vibrational lines, and its possible link to strong spin-orbit coupling of the $c^3Σ_{1}^+$ potential with the nearby…
High-power and narrow-linewidth laser light is a vital tool for atomic physics, being used for example in laser cooling and trapping and precision spectroscopy. Here we produce Watt-level laser radiation at 457.49 nm and 460.86 nm of respective relevance for the cooling transitions of cadmium and strontium atoms. This is achieved via the frequency doubling of a kHz-linewidth vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL), which is based on a novel gain chip design enabling lasing at > 2 W in the 915-928 nm region. Following an additional doubling stage, spectroscopy of the $^1S_0\to{…
We report on spectroscopy of cold dysprosium atoms on the $1001\,\mathrm{nm}$ transition and present measurements of the excited state lifetime which is at least $87.2(6.7)\,\mathrm{ms}$ long. Due to the long excited state lifetime we are able to measure the ratio of the excited state polarizability to the ground state polarizability at $1064\,\mathrm{nm}$ to be $0.828(0.129)$ by parametric heating in an optical dipole trap. In addition we measure the isotope shifts of the three most abundant bosonic isotopes of dysprosium on the $1001\,\mathrm{nm}$ transition with an accuracy better than $30\…
Doppler-free spectroscopy using two counter-propagating dual-frequency laser beams in alkali vapor cells has been demonstrated recently, providing the detection of high-contrast sign-reversed natural-linewidth sub-Doppler resonances. However, to date, only a qualitative theory based on a simplified $Λ$-scheme model has been reported to explain underlying physics of this phenomenon. In this work, we develop a general and extended theoretical model of dual-frequency sub-Doppler spectroscopy (DF SDS) for Cs D1 line. The latter considers the real atomic energy structure, main relaxation processes …
We theoretically study an impulsively excited quantum bouncer (QB) - a particle bouncing off a surface in the presence of gravity. A pair of time-delayed pulsed excitations is shown to induce a wave-packet echo effect - a partial rephasing of the QB wave function appearing at twice the delay between pulses. In addition, an appropriately chosen observable [here, the population of the ground gravitational quantum state (GQS)] recorded as a function of the delay is shown to contain the transition frequencies between the GQSs, their populations, and partial phase information about the wave packet …
