The offline problem of transmission completion time minimization for an energy harvesting transmitter under fading is extended to allow packet arrivals during transmission. A method for computing an optimal power and rate allocation (i.e., an optimal offline schedule) is developed and studied.
We first consider an energy harvesting channel with fading, where only the transmitter harvests energy from natural sources. We bound the optimal long term throughput by a constant for a class of energy arrival distributions. The proposed method also gives a constant approximation to the capacity of the energy harvesting channel with fading. Next, we consider a more general system where both the transmitter and the receiver employ energy harvesting to power themselves. In this case, we show that finding an approximation to the optimal long term throughput is far more difficult, and identify a …
Energy harvesting technique is a potential way for relay node energy supply in cooperative networks in terms of deployment flexibility and maintain charge reduction. Unlike traditional power source, relay node in this case may run out of energy with certain probability, which can degrade the benefit from relay-aided cooperative transmission. In this paper, we concentrate on the outage behavior of cooperative networks aided by energy harvesting relay node in slow fading channel, and attempt to derive the closed-form expression of outage probability of proposed cooperative protocol. Compared wit…
In this paper, the performance of a dual-hop energy harvesting-based fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying communication system, subject to fading impairments, is investigated. We consider a source node ($S$) communicating with a destination node ($D$) through a fixed distant relay ($R$), which harvests energy from its received signals and uses it to amplify and forward the received signals to $D$. Power-splitting (PS) and time-switching (TS) schemes are considered in the analysis for energy harvesting. The $S$-$R$ and $R$-$D$ hops are modeled by the Nakagami-$m$ and $α$-$μ$ fading mode…
We consider the achievable average rates of a multiple-access system, which consists of N energy-harvesting users (EHUs) that transmit information over a block fading multiple-access channel (MAC) and a base station (BS) that broadcasts radio frequency (RF) energy to the EHUs for wireless power transfer. The information (over the uplink) and power (over the downlink) can be transmitted either in time division duplex or frequency division duplex. For the case when the EHUs battery capacities and the number of transmission slots are both infinite, we determine the optimal power allocation for th…
The lifetime and the sustainability of the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be increased with energy harvesting transmitters utilizing optimum packet scheduling. On the other hand, WSNs are observed to collect spatially or temporally correlated data which should be taken into account for the optimum packet scheduling in an energy harvesting system. However, the solutions available for 2-user multiple-access channel (MAC) systems with energy harvesting transmitters do not consider the common data or the correlation among the data. In this paper, optimal packet scheduling for energy harvestin…
A message composed of packets is transmitted using erasure and channel coding over a fading channel with no feedback. For this scenario, the paper explores the trade-off between the redundancies allocated to the packet-level erasure code and the channel code, along with an objective of a low probability of failure to recover the message. To this end, we consider a fading model that we term proportional-diversity block fading (PD block fading). For a fixed overall code rate and transmit power, we formulate an optimization problem to numerically find the optimal channel-coding rate (and thus the…
In this paper, we consider an overlay cognitive radio network, in which a secondary transmitter (ST) is willing to relay the information of a primary transmitter toward a primary receiver. In return, ST can access the licensed band to send its own information superimposed with the primary signal to a secondary receiver. The power-limited ST uses a power splitting protocol to harvest energy from its received signal to increase its transmit power. We analyze the performance of the primary and the secondary systems under independent Nakagami-m fading by deriving their corresponding outage probabi…
We study the dynamic power splitting for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in the ergodic fading channel. Considering the nonlinearity of practical energy harvesting circuits, we adopt the realistic nonlinear energy harvesting (EH) model rather than the idealistic linear EH model. To characterize the optimal rate-energy (RE) tradeoff, we consider the problem of maximizing the R-E region, which is nonconvex. We solve this challenging problem for two different cases of the channel state information (CSI): (i) when the CSI is known only at the receiver (the CSIR case) a…
We consider a block fading additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and the receiver. First, for a given codeword length and non-vanishing average probability of error, we obtain lower and upper bounds on the maximum transmission rate. We derive bounds for three kinds of power constraints inherent to a wireless transmitter. These include the canonical peak power constraint and average power constraint. In addition, we consider a time varying peak power constraint imposed by an \emph{energy harvesting device}-a mechanism that p…
We present a generic approximation of the packet error rate (PER) function of uncoded schemes in the AWGN channel using extreme value theory (EVT). The PER function can assume both the exponential and the Gaussian Q-function bit error rate (BER) forms. The EVT approach leads us to a best closed-form approximation, in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency, of the average PER in block-fading channels. The numerical analysis shows that the approximation holds tight for any value of SNR and packet length whereas the earlier studies approximate the average PER only at asymptotic SNRs and p…
This paper studies online power control policies for outage minimization in a fading wireless link with energy harvesting transmitter and receiver. The outage occurs when either the transmitter or the receiver does not have enough energy, or the channel is in outage, where the transmitter only has the channel distribution information. Under infinite battery capacity and without retransmission, we prove that threshold-based power control policies are optimal. We thus propose disjoint/joint threshold-based policies with and without battery state sharing between the transmitter and receiver, resp…
We consider the problem of Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) over a fading multiple access channel with additive Gaussian noise. The transmitters as well as the receiver harvest energy from ambient sources. We assume that the transmitters have two classes of data to send, viz. delay sensitive and delay tolerant data. Each transmitter sends the delay sensitive data at a certain minimum rate irrespective of the channel conditions (fading states). In addition, if the channel conditions are good, the delay tolerant data is sent. {Along with data, the transmitters also tr…
In this paper, energy-efficient transmission schemes achieving maximal throughput over a finite time interval are studied in a problem setting including energy harvests, data arrivals and channel variation. The goal is to express the offline optimal policy in a way that facilitates a good online solution. We express any throughput maximizing energy efficient offline schedule (EE-TM-OFF) explicitly in terms of water levels. This allows per-slot real-time evaluation of transmit power and rate decisions, using estimates of the associated offline water levels. To compute the online power level, we…
This paper considers an energy harvesting sensor node with battery size $B_{max}$ that recharges its battery through an incremental energy harvesting process and receives updates from a single information source in slotted time. The node actively decides to power down (OFF) or up (ON) the communication circuitry for a portion of its operation time in order to maintain energy efficiency. Update packets arriving in ON (OFF) periods are received (discarded). A deterministic energy cost per time is paid during ON periods. The power down decision can be in partial or full nature, yielding various o…
We consider the on-time transmissions of a sequence of packets over a fading channel.Different from traditional in-time communications, we investigate how many packets can be received $δ$-on-time, meaning that the packet is received with a deviation no larger than $δ$ slots. In this framework, we first derive the on-time reception rate of the random transmissions over the fading channel when no controlling is used. To improve the on-time reception rate, we further propose to schedule the transmissions by delaying, dropping, or repeating the packets. Specifically, we model the scheduling over t…
We investigate the probability that the peak age of information in a point-to-point communication system operating over a multiantenna wireless fading channel exceeds a predetermined value. The packets are scheduled according to a last-come first-serve policy with preemption in service, and are transmitted over the channel using a simple automatic repetition request protocol. We consider quadrature phase shift keying modulation, pilot-assisted transmission, maximum-likelihood channel estimation, and mismatched scaled nearest-neighbor decoding. Our analysis, which exploits nonasymptotic tools i…
The paper investigates the problem of maximizing expected sum throughput in a fading multiple access cognitive radio network when secondary user (SU) transmitters have energy harvesting capability, and perform cooperative spectrum sensing. We formulate the problem as maximization of sum-capacity of the cognitive multiple access network over a finite time horizon subject to a time averaged interference constraint at the primary user (PU) and almost sure energy causality constraints at the SUs. The problem is a mixed integer non-linear program with respect to two decision variables namely spectr…
The problem of online packet scheduling to minimize the required conventional grid energy for transmitting a fixed number of packets given a common deadline is considered. The total number of packets arriving within the deadline is known, but the packet arrival times are unknown, and can be arbitrary. The proposed algorithm tries to finish the transmission of each packet assuming all future packets are going to arrive at equal time intervals within the left-over time. The proposed online algorithm is shown to have competitive ratio that is logarithmic in the number of packet arrivals. The hybr…
In this paper, we consider a UAV-enabled WSN where a flying UAV is employed to collect data from multiple sensor nodes (SNs). Our objective is to maximize the minimum average data collection rate from all SNs subject to a prescribed reliability constraint for each SN by jointly optimizing the UAV communication scheduling and three-dimensional (3D) trajectory. Different from the existing works that assume the simplified line-of-sight (LoS) UAV-ground channels, we consider the more practically accurate angle-dependent Rician fading channels between the UAV and SNs with the Rician factors determi…
We present nonasymptotic upper and lower bounds on the maximum coding rate achievable when transmitting short packets over a Rician memoryless block-fading channel for a given requirement on the packet error probability. We focus on the practically relevant scenario in which there is no \emph{a priori} channel state information available at the transmitter and at the receiver. An upper bound built upon the min-max converse is compared to two lower bounds: the first one relies on a noncoherent transmission strategy in which the fading channel is not estimated explicitly at the receiver; the sec…
The optimal transmission strategy to minimize the weighted combination of age of information (AoI) and total energy consumption is studied in this paper. It is assumed that the status update information is obtained and transmitted at fixed rate over a Rayleigh fading channel in a packet-based wireless communication system. A maximum transmission round on each packet is enforced to guarantee certain reliability of the update packets. Given fixed average transmission power, the age-energy tradeoff can be formulated as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) problem considering the sensing p…
We study video streaming over a slow fading wireless channel. In a streaming application video packets are required to be decoded and displayed in the order they are transmitted as the transmission goes on. This results in per-packet delay constraints, and the resulting channel can be modeled as a physically degraded fading broadcast channel with as many virtual users as the number of packets. In this paper we study two important quality of user experience (QoE) metrics, namely throughput and inter-decoding delay. We introduce several transmission schemes, and compare their throughput and maxi…
Energy efficiency and quality of service (QoS) guarantees are the key design goals for the 5G wireless communication systems. In this context, we discuss a multiuser scheduling scheme over fading channels for loss tolerant applications. The loss tolerance of the application is characterized in terms of different parameters that contribute to quality of experience for the application. The mobile users are scheduled opportunistically such that a minimum QoS is guaranteed. We propose an opportunistic scheduling scheme and address the cross layer design framework when channel state information is …
Motivated by the current interest in ultra-reliable, low-latency, machine-type communication systems, we investigate the tradeoff between reliability, throughput, and latency in the transmission of information over multiple-antenna Rayleigh block-fading channels. Specifically, we obtain finite-blocklength, finite-SNR upper and lower bounds on the maximum coding rate achievable over such channels for a given constraint on the packet error probability. Numerical evidence suggests that our bounds delimit tightly the maximum coding rate already for short blocklengths (packets of about 100 symbols)…
Leveraging recent results in finite-blocklength information theory, we investigate the problem of designing a control channel in a 5G system. The setup involves the transmission, under stringent latency and reliability constraints, of a short data packet containing a small information payload, over a propagation channel that offers limited frequency diversity and no time diversity. We present an achievability bound, built upon the random-coding union bound with parameter $s$ (Martinez & Guillén i Fàbregas, 2011), which relies on quadrature phase-shift keying modulation, pilot-assisted transmis…
We study the effect of channel fading in Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) and show that fading enhances the RFto- DC conversion efficiency of nonlinear RF energy harvesters. We then develop a new form of signal design for WPT, denoted as Transmit Diversity, that relies on multiple dumb antennas at the transmitter to induce fast fluctuations of the wireless channel. Those fluctuations boost the RF-to-DC conversion efficiency thanks to the energy harvester nonlinearity. In contrast with (energy) beamforming, Transmit Diversity does not rely on Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) and…
We present nonasymptotic bounds on the maximum coding rate achievable over a Rician block-fading channel for a fixed packet size and a fixed packet error probability. Our bounds, which apply to the scenario where no a priori channel state information is available at the receiver, allow one to quantify the tradeoff between the rate gains resulting from the exploitation of time-frequency diversity and the rate loss resulting from fast channel variations and pilot-symbol overhead.
In this paper, we study ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) under fading using multiple frequency or time bins. We investigate an approach to find an upper-bound on the packet error rate when a finite-length code is used. From simulation results, we find that the bound is reasonably tight for wide ranges of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the number of multiple bins. Thus, the derived bound can be used to determine key parameters to guarantee the performance of URLLC in terms of the packet error rate.
In this paper, we investigate the performance of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in a point-to-point system, adopting practical $M$-ary modulation. We take into account the fact that the receiver's radio-frequency (RF) energy harvesting circuit can only harvest energy when the received signal power is greater than a certain sensitivity level. For both power-splitting (PS) and time-switching (TS) schemes, we derive the energy harvesting performance as well as the information decoding performance for the Nakagami-$m$ fading channel. We also analyze the performance tr…
This paper analyzes the communication between two energy harvesting wireless sensor nodes. The nodes use automatic repeat request and forward error correction mechanism for the error control. The random nature of available energy and arrivals of harvested energy may induce interruption to the signal sampling and decoding operations. We propose a selective sampling scheme where the length of the transmitted packet to be sampled depends on the available energy at the receiver. The receiver performs the decoding when complete samples of the packet are available. The selective sampling information…
In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) technique in providing high-reliability and low-latency in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime in a single user uplink scenario. We characterize the packet error rate (PER), throughput, and delay performance of chase combining HARQ (CC-HARQ) and incremental redundancy HARQ (IR-HARQ) in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channel with $m$ retransmissions. Furthermore, we consider a quasi-static fading channel model, which is more accurate than the over-simplified i.i.d. block fading or same channel assumption ove…
Random access protocols relying on the transmission of packet replicas in multiple slots and exploiting interference cancellation at the receiver have been shown to achieve per- formance competitive with that of orthogonal schemes. So far the optimization of the repetition degree profile, defining the probability for a user to transmit a given number of replicas, has mainly been performed targeting the collision channel model. In this paper the analysis is extended to a block fading channel model, also assuming capture effect at the receiver. Density evolution equations are developed for the n…
Ambient radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting is widely promoted as an enabler for wireless-power Internet of Things (IoT) networks. This paper jointly characterizes energy harvesting and packet transmissions in grant-free opportunistic uplink IoT networks energized via harvesting downlink energy. To do that, a joint queuing theory and stochastic geometry model is utilized to develop a spatio-temporal analytical model. Particularly, the harvested energy and packet transmission success probability are characterized using tools from stochastic geometry. {Moreover, each device is modeled using a…
Wireless sensors can integrate rechargeable batteries and energy-harvesting (EH) devices to enable long-term, autonomous operation, thus requiring intelligent energy management to limit the adverse impact of energy outages. This work considers a network of EH wireless sensors, which report packets with a random utility value to a fusion center (FC) over a shared wireless channel. Decentralized access schemes are designed, where each node performs a local decision to transmit/discard a packet, based on an estimate of the packet's utility, its own energy level, and the scenario state of the EH p…
Energy Harvesting (EH) has emerged as a promising technique for Green Communications and it is a novel technique to prolong the lifetime of the wireless networks with replenishable nodes. In this paper, we consider the energy shortage analysis of fixed rate transmission in communication systems with energy harvesting nodes. First, we study the finite-horizon transmission and provide the general formula for the energy shortage probability. We also give some examples as benchmarks. Then, we continue to derive a closed-form expression for infinite-horizon transmission, which is a lower bound for …
