In order to complete Stark broadening data for Ne II, and O III lines, needed for analysis of stellar atmospheres, we determined, within the semiclassical perturbation method, the missing Stark broadening parameters for the broadening by collisions with protons and ionized helium, for 15 Ne II and 5 O III multiplets. Also, electron, proton, and ionized helium impact broadening parameters for an important Ne II multiplet in the visible part of the spectrum, and for three Ne III multiplets, were calculated. The obtained data will be included in the STARK-B database, which is a part of Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Center.
Stark broadening parameters for 157 multiplets of helium like boron (B IV) have been calculated using the impact semiclassical perturbation formalism. Obtained results have been used to investigate the regularities within spectral series. An example of the influence of Stark broadening on B IV lines in DO white dwarfs is given.
White dwarf and pre-white dwarf atmospheres are one of the best examples for the application of Stark broadening research results in astrophysics, due to plasma conditions very favorable for this line broadening mechanism. For example in hot hydrogen-deficient (pre-) white dwarf stars Teff = 75 000 K - 180 000 K and log g = 5.5-8 [cgs]. Even for much cooler DA and DB white dwarfs with typical effective temperatures of 10 000 K - 20 000 K, Stark broadening is usually the dominant broadening mechanism. In this review, Stark broadening in white dwarf spectra is considered and the attention is dra…
Besides the need of Stark broadening parameters for a number of problems in physics, and plasma technology, in hot star atmospheres the conditions exist where Stark widths are comparable and even larger than the thermal Doppler widths. Using the semiclassical perturbation method we investigated here the influence of collisions with charged particles for In III spectral lines. We determined a number of Stark broadening parameters important for the investigation of plasmas in the atmospheres of A-type stars and white dwarfs. Also, we have compared the obtained results with existing experimental …
In order to complete data on Stark broadening parameters for Ar I line in the visible spectrum, we determined Stark widths and shifts due to electron, proton, and ionized helium impacts, for nine lines (4191.0, 4259.4, 5912.1, 6043.2, 6045.0, 6752.9, 7503.9, 7514.6, 7724.2 Å), using jK coupling and semiclassical-perturbation theory. The obtained results will enter the STARK-B database, which is a part of Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Center.
White dwarf stars are traditionally found to have surface compositions made primarily of hydrogen or helium. However, a new family has recently been uncovered, the so-called Hot DQ white dwarfs, which have surface compositions dominated by carbon and oxygen with little or no trace of hydrogen and helium (Dufour et al. 2007, 2008, 2010). Deriving precise atmospheric parameters for these objects (such as the effective temperature and the surface gravity) requires detailed modeling of spectral line profiles. Stark broadening parameters are of crucial importance in that context. We present prelimi…
We present new calculations for the Stark broadening of the hydrogen line profiles in the dense atmospheres of white dwarf stars. Our improved model is based on the unified theory of Stark broadening from Vidal, Cooper & Smith, but it also includes non-ideal gas effects from the Hummer & Mihalas occupation probability formalism directly inside the line profile calculations. This approach improves upon previous calculations that relied on the use of an ad-hoc free parameter to describe the dissolution of the line wing opacity in the presence of high electric microfields in the plasma. We presen…
Stark broadening parameters for 36 multiplets of B IV have been calculated using the semi-classical perturbation formalism. Obtained results have been used to investigate the regularities within spectral series and temperature dependence.
We present improved calculations for the Stark broadening of hydrogen lines in dense plasmas typical of white dwarf atmospheres. Our new model is based on the unified theory of Stark broadening from Vidal, Cooper, & Smith. For the first time, we account for the non-ideal effects in a consistent way directly inside the line profile calculations. The Hummer & Mihalas theory is used to describe the non-ideal effects due to perturbations on the absorber from protons and electrons. We use a truncation of the electric microfield distribution in the quasi-static proton broadening to take into account…
The electron-impact widths for 15 doubly charged Nb ion lines have been theoretically determined by using the modified semiempirical method. Using the obtained results, we considered the influence of the electron-impact mechanism on line shapes in spectra of chemically peculiar stars and white dwarfs.
Stark effect is observed in many natural and artificial plasmas and is of great importance for diagnostic purposes. Since this effect alters profiles of spectral lines, it should be taken into account when assessing chemical composition of radiation sources, including stars. Copper is one of the elements which studies of stellar atmospheres deal with. To this end, UV and visible Cu lines are used. However, there is a lack of agreement between existing data on their Stark parameters. It is therefore of interest to obtain new experimental data on these lines and to compare them to previous resul…
The calculation of line widths constitutes theoretical and computational challenges in the calculation of opacities of hot dense plasmas. Opacity models use line broadening approximations that are untested at stellar interior conditions. Moreover, calculations of atomic spectra of the sun, indicate a large discrepancy in the K-shell line widths between several atomic codes and the OP. In this work, the atomic code STAR is used to study the sensitivity of solar opacities to line-broadening. Variations in the solar opacity profile, due to an increase of the Stark widths resulting from discrepanc…
\textquotedblleft Stark" broadening theories and calculations have been extensively developed for about 50 years and can now be applied to many needs, especially for accurate spectroscopic diagnostics and modeling. This requires the knowledge of numerous collisional line profiles. Nowadays, the access to such data via an online database becomes essential. STARK-B is a collaborative project between the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade and the Laboratoire d'Étude du Rayonnement et de la matière en Astrophysique (LERMA). It is a database of calculated widths and shifts of isolated lines of at…
Observations from the \textit{Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph} (\textsl{IRIS}) often reveal significantly broadened and non-reversed profiles of the Mg II h, k and triplet lines at flare ribbons. To understand the formation of these optically thick Mg II lines, we perform plane parallel radiative hydrodynamics modeling with the RADYN code, and then recalculate the Mg II line profiles from RADYN atmosphere snapshots using the radiative transfer code RH. We find that the current RH code significantly underestimates the Mg II h \& k Stark widths. By implementing semi-classical perturbation …
We present theoretical calculations of the quasi-molecular line profiles for the Lyman (Lya, Lyb, Lyg, Lyd) and Balmer (Ha, Hb, Hg, Hd, He, H8, H9, and H10) series, perturbed by collisions with protons. In all calculations we include the dependence of the dipole moments as a function of internuclear distance during the collision. The broadening from ion collisions must be added to the normal electron Stark broadening.
We present new calculations of Stark broadened profiles for neutral helium lines using computer simulations that include some important aspects aimed at better representing the dynamical environment of the helium atom. These include the unification of ion and electron treatment, the correction for ion dynamics, the transition of the electron contribution to broadening from the core to the wings of the profile, the numerical integration of the time evolution operator of helium perturbed by a fluctuating electric field, the Debye correction for the correlation of the motion of charged perturbers…

The sn stars present sharp Balmer lines, sharp metallic lines and broad coreless He I lines. Initially Abt & Levato proposed a shell-like nature to explain the sn stars, although this scenario was subsequently questioned. We aim to derive abundances for a sample of 9 stars, including sn and non-sn stars, to determine the possible relation between sn and CP stars. We analysed the photospheric chemical composition of sn stars and show that approximately 40% of them display chemical peculiarities (such as He-weak and HgMn stars) within a range of temperature of 10300 - 14500 K. We have studied th…
Using semiclassical perturbation approach in impact approximation, we have calculated Stark widths for 32 spectral lines of doubly charged argon (Ar III). Oscillator strengths are calculated using Hartree-Fock method with relativistic correction (HFR) and an atomic model including 17 configurations. Energy levels are taken from NIST database. For perturbing levels for which the corresponding energy does not exist in NIST database, the calculated energies are used. Our widths are compared with the experimental results. The results presented here are of interest for modelling and investigation o…
Stark broadening theory is currently operated for calculating widths and shifts of spectral lines that are needed for spectroscopic diagnostics and modelling in astrophysics, laboratory and technological plasmas. We have calculated a great number of data, obtained through the impact semi- classical perturbation theory: tables have been published for neutral atom and ion emitters, and typical temperatures, electron and ion densities. They are currently implemented in the STARK-B database which participates to the European effort within the VAMDC (Virtual Atomic and Molecular data Centre). Despi…
Stellar flares are characterized by sudden enhancement of electromagnetic radiation in stellar atmospheres. So far much of our understanding of stellar flares comes from photometric observations, from which plasma motions in flare regions could not be detected. From the spectroscopic data of LAMOST DR7, we have found one stellar flare that is characterized by an impulsive increase followed by a gradual decrease in the H$α$ line intensity on an M4-type star, and the total energy radiated through H$α$ is estimated to be on the order of $10^{33}$ erg. The H$α$ line appears to have a Voigt profile…
The IACOB project is an ambitious long-term project which is contributing to step forward in our knowledge about the physical properties and evolution of Galactic massive stars. The project aims at building a large database of high-resolution, multi-epoch, spectra of Galactic OB stars, and the scientific exploitation of the database using state-of-the-art models and techniques. In this proceeding, we summarize the latest updates of the IACOB spectroscopic database and highlight some of the first scientific results from the IACOB project; we also announce the first data release and the first pu…
We present new calculations of unified line profiles for hydrogen perturbed by collisions with protons. We report on new calculations of the potential energies and dipole moments which allow the evaluation of profiles for the lines of the Lyman series up to Lyman$δ$ and the Balmer series up to Balmer10. Unified calculations only existed for the lines Lyman$α$ to Lyman$γ$ and Balmer$α$ including the H$_2^+$ quasi-molecule. These data are available as online material accompanying this paper and should be included in atmosphere models, in place of the Stark effect of protons, since the quasi-mole…
A publicly available database of opacities for molecules of astrophysical interest, ExoMolOP, has been compiled for over 80 species, based on the latest line list data from the ExoMol, HITEMP and MoLLIST databases. These data are generally suitable for characterising high temperature exoplanet or cool stellar/substellar atmospheres, and have been computed at a variety of pressures and temperatures, with a few molecules included at room-temperature only from the HITRAN database. The data are formatted in different ways for four different exoplanet atmosphere retrieval codes; ARCiS, TauREx, NEME…
In the present work, we test the predictions of the AWSoM model, a global extended-MHD model capable of calculating the propagation and turbulent dissipation of Alfvén waves in any magnetic topology, against high resolution spectra of the quiescent off-disk solar corona. Wave dissipation is the only heating mechanism assumed in this model. Combining 3D model results with the CHIANTI atomic database, we were able to create synthetic line-of-sight spectra which include the effects of emission line broadening due to both thermal and wave-related non-thermal motions. To the best of our knowledge t…
The ExoMol database (www.exomol.com) provides molecular data for spectroscopic studies of hot atmospheres. While the data is intended for studies of exoplanets and other astronomical bodies, the dataset is widely applicable. The basic form of the database is extensive line lists; these are supplemented with partition functions, state lifetimes, cooling functions, Landé g-factors, temperature-dependent cross sections, opacities, pressure broadening parameters, $k$-coefficients and dipoles. This paper presents the latest release of the database which has been expanded to consider 80 molecules an…
Stellar, substellar, and planetary atmosphere models are all highly sensitive to the input opacities. Generational differences between various state-of-the-art stellar/planetary models are primarily because of incomplete and outdated atomic/molecular line-lists. Here we present a database of pre-computed absorption cross-sections for all isotopologues of key atmospheric molecules relevant to late-type stellar, brown dwarf, and planetary atmospheres: MgH, AlH, CaH, TiH, CrH, FeH, SiO, TiO, VO, and H2O. The pressure and temperature ranges of the computed opacities are between 10$^{-6}$--3000~bar…
