We present x-ray reflectivity, x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements of single crystal SrTiO3 taken as a function of temperature. We found a rumpling transformation of the SrTiO3 surface after cooling the sample below ~105 K. The rumpling transformation is correlated with the cubic to tetragonal phase transformation that occurs at the same temperature. The rumpling transformation is reversible.
The magnetic and structural transformations in the nickel crystal within the temperature range 470 < T< 631 K is studied on the basis of general phenomenological theory of spin-orbit phase transitions. A new phase transition at Tls \approx 570 K conditioned by cooperative relativistic interactions effect is prognosticated and the experimental information validating the existence of phase transition is presented.
The transformation stretch tensor plays an essential role in the evaluation of conditions of compatibility between phases and the use of the Cauchy-Born rule. This tensor is difficult to measure directly from experiment. We give an algorithm for the determination of the transformation stretch tensor from x-ray measurements of structure and lattice parameters. When evaluated on some traditional and emerging phase transformations the algorithm gives unexpected results.
Nanocrystals can exist in multiply twinned structures like the icosahedron, or single crystalline structures like the cuboctahedron or Wulff-polyhedron. Structural transformation between these polymorphic structures can proceed through diffusion or displacive motion. Experimental studies on nanocrystal structural transformations have focused on high temperature diffusion mediated processes. Thus, there is limited experimental evidence of displacive motion mediated structural transformations. Here, we report the high-pressure structural transformation of 6 nm Au nanocrystals under nonhydrostati…
A recent announcement [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 075503, (2011)], after anomalies in the thermal expansion, of a previously unknown martensitic transformation in pure Nb, Ta and V is discussed in the light of anelastic measurements on Nb samples with comparable purities. It results that the effects of the alleged transformation on the anelastic spectra would be at least three orders of magnitude smaller than in typical martensitic transformations. A possible alternative explanation for the observed anomalies is proposed in terms of precipitation of unnoticed residual H.
We report high pressure structural phase transformation sequence in a layered Iron-based superconducting compound FeSe0.3Te0.7 to 31 GPa at room temperature. The ambient pressure PbO type tetragonal phase (Space Group - P4/nmm) transforms to a monoclinic phase (Space group - P21/m) at a pressure of 7.3 \pm 0.9 GPa. This monoclinic phase is similar to the one observed below 100 K at ambient pressure. On further increase of pressure above 12 GPa, a transformation to an amorphous phase is observed that is completed by 20 GPa. The amorphous phase is found to be stable to the highest pressure of 31…
Structural transformations at interfaces are of profound fundamental interest as complex examples of phase transitions in low-dimensional systems. Despite decades of extensive research, no compelling evidence exists for structural transformations in high-angle grain boundaries in elemental systems. Here we show that the critical impediment to observations of such phase transformations in atomistic modeling has been rooted in inadequate simulation methodology. The proposed new methodology allows variations in atomic density inside the grain boundary and reveals multiple grain boundary phases wi…
We present a new phase field crystal model for structural transformations in multi-component alloys. The formalism builds upon the two-point correlation kernel developed in Greenwood et al. for describing structural transformations in pure materials [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 045702 (2010)]. We introduce an effective twopoint correlation function for multi-component alloys that uses the local species concentrations to interpolate between different crystal structures. A simplified version of the model is derived for the particular case of threecomponent (ternary) alloys, and its equilibrium propert…
In this paper we attempt to understand the different nature of first order magnetic transformation in Mn$_3$SnC as compared to that in Mn$_3$GaC. The transformation in Mn$_3$SnC is close to room temperature (T$_t \approx$ 280K) and is associated with a large change in magnetic entropy that makes it a suitable candidate for applications in ferroic cooling. Using a combination of x-ray and neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy we infer that the magnetic ground state consisting of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn atoms is due to structural distortions p…
The temperature-induced structural and electronic transformation in VO$_2$ between the monoclinic M1 and tetragonal rutile phases was studied by means of \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics, based on density functional theory with Hubbard correction (DFT+U). Analysis of the dynamical processes associated with the structural transformation was carried out on the atomic scale by following the time evolution of dimerization amplitudes of vanadium atom chains and the twisting angle of vanadium dimers. The electronic transition was studied by tracing the changes in projected densities of states a…
The ammonium cation interaction with Na-birnessite in aqueous alkaline medium was studied. Solution and solid analysis give evidence that birnessite is not only acting as a cationic exchanger toward NH4+. The surface analysis performed by XPS showed that N1s spectra are characterized by the existence of two different environments: one assignable to an interlayer NH4+ and the second to a chemisorbed N-species. Structural and chemical transformations were observed on birnessite with nitrogen mass balance deficit. The monitoring of NH4 +, Na+, Mn2+, NO3- and NO2- and solid changes (average oxidat…
In the present work, two successive magneto-structural transformations (MSTs) consisting of martensitic and intermartensitic transitions have been reported in polycrystalline Ni55.8Mn18.1Ga26.1 Heusler alloy. Benefiting from the additional latent heat contributed from intermediate phase, this alloy exhibits a large transition entropy change ΔStr with the value of ~28 J/kg K. Moreover, the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been also evaluated in terms of Maxwell relation. For the magnetic field change of 3 T, it is found that the calculated value of refrigeration capacity for Ni55.8Mn18.1Ga26.1 a…
We develop parameters for the interlayer Kolmogorov-Crespi (KC) potential to study structural features of four transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs): MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We also propose a mixing rule to extend the parameters to their heterostructures. Moiré superlattices of twisted bilayer TMDs have been recently shown to host shear solitons, topological point defects and ultraflatbands close to the valence band edge. Performing structural relaxations at the DFT level is a major bottleneck in the study of these systems. We show that the parametrized KC potential can be use…
Equiatomic nickle-titanium (NiTi) is investigated to determine the consequences of point defects on the Martensitic phase transformation. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, NiTi with 0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% of Schottky-type defects (vacancies) have been modeled with the temperature of structural transformation elucidated. Increasing the concentration of point defects leads to this transformation occurring at lower temperatures than the perfect structure while the final monoclinic unit cell angle ($γ$) substantially decreases. Modeling anti-site defects at the 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% conc…
The phase field crystal (PFC) method has emerged as a promising technique for modeling materials with atomistic resolution on mesoscopic time scales. The approach is numerically much more efficient than classical density functional theory (CDFT), but its single mode free energy functional only leads to lattices with triangular (2D) or BCC (3D) symmetries. By returning to a closer approximation of the CDFT free energy functional, we develop a systematic construction of two-particle direct correlation functions that allow the study of a broad class of crystalline structures. This construction ex…
We study the pressure-induced structural transformation of Ge$_{136}$ clathrate by ab initio molecular dynamics and metadynamics. The system under pressure first undergoes amorphization followed by an ultrafast recrystallization to the $β$-tin structure on the time scale of 30 ps. The initial pressure-induced amorphization of clathrate is triggered by high pressure while the subsequent fast recrystallization to $β$-tin is driven by low temperature. Interestingly, the amorphous intermediate is still diffusive even at room temperature, in spite of very strong undercooling, making the ultrafast r…

It includes a general thermodynamic and kinetic theories with sharp interfaces and within phase field approach. Numerous analytical (even at large strains) and numerical solutions illustrate the main features of the developed theories and their application to the real phenomena. Coherent, semicoherent, and …
A structural transformation in water upon compression was recently observed at the temperature $T=277$~K in the vicinity of the pressure $p \approx 2\;000$~Atm [R.M. Khusnutdinoff, A.V. Mokshin, J. Non-Cryst. Solids \textbf{357}, 1677 (2011)]. It was found that the transformations are related with the principal structural changes within the first two coordination shells as well as the deformation of the hydrogen-bond network. In this work we study in details the influence of these structural transformations on the vibrational molecular dynamics of water by means of molecular dynamics simulatio…

The effect of the film thickness and temperature on structural phase transformations in infinite films of bcc zirconium with (001) crystallographic orientation is studied by the molecular dynamics method with a many-body potential of interatomic interaction obtained within the embedded atom model. It is shown that the mechanism, sequence and final structures of phase transitions in bcc Zr films essentially depend on the film thickness. The films with (001) surface up to 6.1 nm thick experience an orientational transition into the bcc (110) phase through an intermediate metastable fcc phase, an…
The kinetics and thermodynamics of structural transformations under pressure depend strongly on particle size due to the influence of surface free energy. By suitable design of surface structure, composition, and passivation it is possible, in principle, to prepare nanocrystals in structures inaccessible to bulk materials. However, few realizations of such extreme size-dependent behavior exist. Here we show with molecular dynamics computer simulation that in a model of CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals the core high pressure structure can be made metastable under ambient conditions by tuning th…
The properties of materials near structural phase transitions are often successfully described in the framework of Landau theory. While the focus is usually on phase transitions, which are induced by temperature changes approaching a critical temperature T-c, here we will discuss structural phase transformations driven by high hydrostatic pressure, as they are of major importance for understanding processes in the interior of the earth. Since at very high pressures the deformations of a material are generally very large, one needs to apply a fully nonlinear description taking physical as well …
During the reversible insertion of ions, lattices in intercalation materials undergo structural transformations. These lattice transformations generate misfit strains and volume changes that, in turn, contribute to the structural decay of intercalation materials and limit their reversible cycling. In this paper, we draw on insights from shape-memory alloys, another class of phase transformation materials, that also undergo large lattice transformations but do so with negligible macroscopic volume changes and internal stresses. We develop a theoretical framework to predict structural transforma…
Experiments on bilayer graphene unveiled a fascinating realization of stacking disorder where triangular domains with well-defined Bernal stacking are delimited by a hexagonal network of strain solitons. Here we show by means of numerical simulations that this is a consequence of a structural transformation of the moiré pattern inherent of twisted bilayer graphene taking place at twist angles $θ$ below a crossover angle $θ^{\star}=1.2^{\circ}$. The transformation is governed by the interplay between the interlayer van der Waals interaction and the in-plane strain field, and is revealed by a ch…
We propose a rigorous construction of a 1D path collective variable to sample structural phase transformations in condensed matter. The path collective variable is defined in a space spanned by global collective variables that serve as classifiers derived from local structural units. A reliable identification of local structural environments is achieved by employing a neural network based classification. The 1D path collective variable is subsequently used together with enhanced sampling techniques to explore the complex migration of a phase boundary during a solid-solid phase transformation i…
Atomistic simulations are employed to study structural evolution of pore ensembles in binary glasses under periodic shear deformation with varied amplitude. The consideration is given to porous systems in the limit of low porosity. The initial ensembles of pores are comprised of multiple pores with small sizes, which are approximately normally distributed. As periodic loading proceeds, the ensembles evolve into configurations with a few large-scale pores and significantly reduced number of small pores. These structural changes are reflected in the skewed shapes of the pore-size distribution fu…
Multi-component chalcogenides, such as quasi-binary GeTe-Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ alloys, are widely used in optical data storage media in the form of rewritable optical discs. Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ (GST) in particular has proven to be one of the best-performing materials, whose reliability allows more than 10$^{6}$ write-erase cycles. Despite these industrial applications, the fundamental kinetics of rapid phase-change in GST remain controversial and active debate continues over the ultimate speed limit. Here we explore ultrafast structural transformation in a photo-excited GST superlattice, where…
Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to study the stress-strain behavior, elastic instabilities, and metallization during a solid-solid phase transformation (PT) between semiconducting Si I (cubic A4) and metallic Si II (tetragonal A5 structure) when subjected to a general stress tensor. With normal stresses ($σ_1$, $σ_2$, $σ_3$) acting along $\left<110 \right>$, $\left<1\bar{1}0 \right>$, and $\left<001\right>$, respectively, dictating the simulation cell, we determine combinations of 6 independent stresses that drive a lattice instability for the Si I$\rightarrow$Si II PT, and a semi…
Recent experimental measurements of Ag impurity diffusion in the Σ5 (310) grain boundary (GB) in Cu revealed an unusual non-Arrhenius behavior suggestive of a possible structural transformation [Divinski et al., Phys. Rev. B 85, 144104 (2012)]. On the other hand, atomistic computer simulations have recently discovered phase transformations in high-angle GBs in metals [Frolov et al., arXiv:1211.1756v2 (2013)]. In this paper we report on atomistic simulations of Ag diffusion and segregation in two different structural phases of the Cu Σ5 (310) GB which transform to each other with temperature. T…
Driven non-equilibrium structural phase transformation has been probed using time varying resistance fluctuations or noise. We demonstrate that the non-Gaussian component (NGC) of noise obtained by evaluating the higher order statistics of fluctuations, serves as a simple kinetic detector of these phase transitions. Using the martensite transformation in free-standing wires of nickel-titanium binary alloys as a prototype, we observe clear deviations from the Gaussian background in the transformation zone, indicative of the long range correlations in the system as the phase transforms. The viab…
We formulate a phenomenological elasto-plastic theory to describe a solid undergoing a structural transition from a square (p4mm) to an oblique (p2) lattice in two dimensions. Within our theory, the components of the strain may be decomposed additively into separate elastic and plastic contributions. The plastic strain, produced when the local stress crosses a threshold, is governed by a phenomenological equation of motion. We investigate the dynamics of shape of an initially square solid as it is cycled through a transformation protocol consisting of (1) a quench across the transition (2) def…
We observed a huge volume expansion of aligned single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) arrays accompanied by structural transformation during electrical breakdown in vacuum. The SWNT arrays were assembled between prefabricated Pd source and drain electrodes of 2 μm separation on Si/SiO_2 substrate via dielectrophoresis. At high electrical field, the SWNT arrays erupt into large mushroom-like structure. Systematic studies with controlled electrical bias show that above a certain field SWNTs swell and transform to nanoparticles and flower-like structures with small volume increase. Further increase…
Structural changes of Li2C2 under pressure were studied by synchrotron x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell under hydrostatic conditions and by using evolutionary search methodology for crystal structure prediction. We show that the high-pressure polymorph of Li2C2, which forms from the Immm ground-state structure (Z = 2) at around 15 GPa, adopts an orthorhombic Pnma structure with Z = 4. Acetylide C2 dumbbells characteristic of Immm Li2C2 are retained in Pnma Li2C2. The structure of Pnma Li2C2 relates closely to the anticotunnite-type structure. C2 dumbbell units are coordinated by nine …
By combining DFT-based computational analysis and symmetry constraints in terms of group-subgroup relations, we analysed the formation of the native crystalline structure of loellingite FeAs$_2$. We showed that the ground state of the material exhibits the ordered patterns of the electronic localization which are mainly associated with iron $3d_{x^2 - y^2}$ orbitals and can be characterized in terms of nematic-like ordering. The ordering is the result of the close interplay of the lattice and the electron degrees of freedom. In a structural aspect, it pursues an energy quest to select the orth…
We extend the solid-state nudged elastic band method to handle a non-conserved order parameter - in particular, magnetization, that couples to volume and leads to many observed effects in magnetic systems. We apply this formalism to the well-studied magneto-volume collapse during the pressure-induced transformation in iron - from ferromagnetic body-centered cubic (bcc) austenite to hexagonal close-packed (hcp) martensite. We find a bcc-hcp equilibrium coexistence pressure of 8.4 GPa, with the transition-state enthalpy of 156 meV/Fe at this pressure. A discontinuity in magnetization and coheren…
In the recent years graphitization of ion-beam induced amorphous layers became the basic tool for device fabrication in diamond. The etchable graphitic layers can be removed to form free-standing membranes into which the desired structures can be sculpted using FIB milling. The optical properties of the devices fabricated using this method are assumed on the model of sharp diamond-air interface. The real quality of this interface could depend on degree of graphitization of the amorphous damage layers after annealing. In the present work the graphitization process was studied using conventional…
