C*-algebras for categories of paths asociated to the Baumslag-Solitar groups

In this paper we describe the C*-algebras associated to the Baumslag-Solitar groups with the ordering defined by the usual presentations. These are Morita equivalent to the crossed product C*-algebras obtained by letting the group act on its directed boundary. We use the method of categories of paths to define the algebras, and to deduce the presentation by generators and relations. We obtain a complete description of the Toeplitz algebras, and we compute the K-theory of the Cuntz-Kreiger algebras.

Phase transitions on the Toeplitz algebras of Baumslag-Solitar semigroups

Spielberg has recently shown that Baumslag-Solitar groups associated to pairs of positive integers are quasi-lattice ordered in the sense of Nica. Thus they have tractable Toeplitz algebras. Each of these algebras carries a natural dynamics. Here we construct the equilibrium states (the KMS states) for these dynamics. A note on the von Neumann algebra of a Baumslag-Solitar group

We study qualitative properties of the group von Neumann algebra of a Baumslag-Solitar group. Namely, we prove that, in the non-amenable and {ICC} case, the associated ${\rm II}_1$ factor is prime, not solid, and does not have any Cartan subalgebra.

Low-pass filters and representations of the Baumslag Solitar group

We analyze representations of solvable Baumslag Solitar group that admit wavelets and show how such representations can be constructed from a given low-pass filter. We describe the direct integral decomposition for some examples and derive from it a general criterion for the existence of solutions for scaling equations. As another application, we construct a Fourier transform for some Hausdorff measures.

C*-simplicity of relative profinite completions of generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups

K-theory for the $C^*$-algebras of the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups

We provide a new computation of the K-theory of the group $C^*$-algebra of the solvable Baumslag-Solitar group $BS(1,n)\;(n\neq 1)$; our computation is based on the Pimsner-Voiculescu 6-terms exact sequence, by viewing $BS(1,n)$ as a semi-direct product $\mathbb{Z}[1/n]\rtimes\mathbb{Z}$. We deduce from it a new proof of the Baum-Connes conjecture with trivial coefficients for $BS(1,n)$.

Stability in orbit equivalence for Baumslag-Solitar groups and Vaes groups

A measure-preserving action of a discrete countable group on a standard probability space is called stable if the associated equivalence relation is isomorphic to its direct product with the ergodic hyperfinite equivalence relation of type II_1. We show that any Baumslag-Solitar group has such an ergodic, free and stable action. It follows that any Baumslag-Solitar group is measure equivalent to its direct product with any amenable group. The same property is obtained for the inner amenable groups of Vaes.

Partial classification of the Baumslag-Solitar group von Neumann algebras

We prove that the rational number |n/m| is an invariant of the group von Neumann algebra of the Baumslag-Solitar group BS(n,m). More precisely, if L(BS(n,m)) is isomorphic with L(\BS(n',m')), then |n'/m'| = |n/m| or |m/n|. We obtain this result by associating to abelian, but not maximal abelian, subalgebras of a II_1 factor, an equivalence relation that can be of type III. In particular, we associate to L(BS(n,m)) a canonical equivalence relation of type III_|n/m|.

A rigidity result for crossed products of actions of Baumslag-Solitar groups

Let BS(n_1,m_1) $\curvearrowright$ X_1 and BS(n_2,m_2) $\curvearrowright$ X_2 be two ergodic essentially free probability measure preserving actions of nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups whose canonical almost normal abelian subgroups act aperiodically. We prove that an isomorphism between the corresponding crossed product II_1 factors forces BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,m_2) when |n_1| $\neq$ |m_1| and BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,$\pm$m_2) when |n_1| = |m_1|. This improves an orbit equivalence rigidity result obtained by Houdayer and Raum.

A duality approach to representations of Baumslag-Solitar groups

We give an operator theoretic approach to the constructions of multiresolutions as they are used in a number of basis constructions with wavelets, and in Hilbert spaces on fractals. Our approach starts with the following version of the classical Baumslag-Solitar relations $u t = t^2 u$ where $t$ is a unitary operator in a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and $u$ is an isometry in $\mathcal H$. C*-algebras associated to graphs of groups

To a large class of graphs of groups we associate a C*-algebra universal for generators and relations. We show that this C*-algebra is stably isomorphic to the crossed product induced from the action of the fundamental group of the graph of groups on the boundary of its Bass-Serre tree. We characterise when this action is minimal, and find a sufficient condition under which it is locally contractive. HNN extensions of quasi-lattice ordered groups and their operator algebras

The Baumslag-Solitar group is an example of an HNN extension. Spielberg showed that it has a natural positive cone, and that it is then a quasi-lattice ordered group in the sense of Nica. We give conditions for an HNN extension of a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G,P)$ to be quasi-lattice ordered. In that case, if $(G,P)$ is amenable as a quasi-lattice ordered group, then so is the HNN extension.

On the Structure of Some Reduced Amalgamated Free Product C*-Algebras

We study some reduced free products of C*-algebras with amalgamations. We give sufficient conditions for the positive cone of the K_0 group to be the largest possible. We also give sufficient conditions for simplicity and uniqueness of trace. A Cuntz-Pimsner Model for the $C^*$-algebra of a Graph of Groups

We provide a Cuntz-Pimsner model for graph of groups $C^*$-algebras. This allows us to compute the $K$-theory of a range of examples and show that graph of groups $C^*$-algebras can be realised as Exel-Pardo algebras. We also make a preliminary investigation of whether the crossed product algebra of Baumslag-Solitar groups acting on the boundary of certain trees satisfies Poincaré duality in $KK$-theory. By constructing a $K$-theory duality class we compute the $K$-homology of these crossed products.

In this paper, we study boundary actions of CAT(0) spaces from a point of view of topological dynamics and $C^*$-algebras.
