Consider a random vector (X',Y)', where X is d-dimensional and Y is one-dimensional. We assume that Y is subject to random right censoring. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we propose a new estimator of the joint distribution of (X',Y)'. This estimator overcomes the common curse-of-dimensionality problem, by using a new dimension reduction technique. Second, we assume that the relation between X and Y is given by a mean regression single index model, and propose a new estimator of the parameters in this model. The asymptotic properties of all proposed estimators are obtained.
One goal in survival analysis of right-censored data is to estimate the marginal survival function in the presence of dependent censoring. When many auxiliary covariates are sufficient to explain the dependent censoring, estimation based on either a semiparametric model or a nonparametric model of the conditional survival function can be problematic due to the high dimensionality of the auxiliary information. In this paper, we use two working models to condense these high-dimensional covariates in dimension reduction; then an estimate of the marginal survival function can be derived nonparamet…
We consider linear transformation models applied to right censored survival data with a change-point based on a covariate threshold. We establish consistency and weak convergence of the nonparametric maximum lieklihood estimators. The change-point parameter is shown to be $n$-consistent, while the remaining parameters are shown to have the expected root-$n$ consistency. We show that the procedure is adaptive in the sense that the non-threshold parameters are estimable with the same precision as if the true threshold value were known. We also develop Monte-Carlo methods of inference for model p…
We propose a new class of semiparametric regression models of mean residual life for censored outcome data. The models, which enable us to estimate the expected remaining survival time and generalize commonly used mean residual life models, also conduct covariate dimension reduction. Using the geometric approaches in semiparametrics literature and the martingale properties with survival data, we propose a flexible inference procedure that relaxes the parametric assumptions on the dependence of mean residual life on covariates and how long a patient has lived. We show that the estimators for th…
We propose a nonparametric test of independence, termed optHSIC, between a covariate and a right-censored lifetime. Because the presence of censoring creates a challenge in applying the standard permutation-based testing approaches, we use optimal transport to transform the censored dataset into an uncensored one, while preserving the relevant dependencies. We then apply a permutation test using the kernel-based dependence measure as a statistic to the transformed dataset. The type 1 error is proven to be correct in the case where censoring is independent of the covariate. Experiments indicate…
In many public health problems, an important goal is to identify the effect of some treatment/intervention on the risk of failure for the whole population. A marginal proportional hazards regression model is often used to analyze such an effect. When dependent censoring is explained by many auxiliary covariates, we utilize two working models to condense high-dimensional covariates to achieve dimension reduction. Then the estimator of the treatment effect is obtained by maximizing a pseudo-likelihood function over a sieve space. Such an estimator is shown to be consistent and asymptotically nor…
Robust Survival Estimation under Interval Censoring: Expectation-Maximization and Bayesian Accelerated Failure Time Assessment via Simulation and Application
We consider a model where the failure hazard function, conditional on a covariate $Z$ is given by $R(t,θ^0|Z)=η\_{γ^0}(t)f\_{β^0}(Z)$, with $θ^0=(β^0,γ^0)^\top\in \mathbb{R}^{m+p}$. The baseline hazard function $η\_{γ^0}$ and relative risk $f\_{β^0}$ belong both to parametric families. The covariate $Z$ is measured through the error model $U=Z+ε$ where $ε$ is independent from $Z$, with known density $f\_ε$. We observe a $n$-sample $(X\_i, D\_i, U\_i)$, $i=1,...,n$, where $X\_i$ is the minimum between the failure time and the censoring time, and $D\_i$ is the censoring indicator. We aim at esti…
The purpose of this paper is to construct confidence intervals for the regression coefficients in the Fine-Gray model for competing risks data with random censoring, where the number of covariates can be larger than the sample size. Despite strong motivation from biomedical applications, a high-dimensional Fine-Gray model has attracted relatively little attention among the methodological or theoretical literature. We fill in this gap by developing confidence intervals based on a one-step bias-correction for a regularized estimation. We develop a theoretical framework for the partial likelihood…
This paper studies a semiparametric quantile regression model with endogenous variables and random right censoring. The endogeneity issue is solved using instrumental variables. It is assumed that the structural quantile of the logarithm of the outcome variable is linear in the covariates and censoring is independent. The regressors and instruments can be either continuous or discrete. The specification generates a continuum of equations of which the quantile regression coefficients are a solution. Identification is obtained when this system of equations has a unique solution. Our estimation p…
Quantile regression has been advocated in survival analysis to assess evolving covariate effects. However, challenges arise when the censoring time is not always observed and may be covariate-dependent, particularly in the presence of continuously-distributed covariates. In spite of several recent advances, existing methods either involve algorithmic complications or impose a probability grid. The former leads to difficulties in the implementation and asymptotics, whereas the latter introduces undesirable grid dependence. To resolve these issues, we develop fundamental and general quantile cal…
We study the identification and estimation of statistical functionals of multivariate data missing non-monotonically and not-at-random, taking a semiparametric approach. Specifically, we assume that the missingness mechanism satisfies what has been previously called "no self-censoring" or "itemwise conditionally independent nonresponse," which roughly corresponds to the assumption that no partially-observed variable directly determines its own missingness status. We show that this assumption, combined with an odds ratio parameterization of the joint density, enables identification of functiona…
Functional covariates are common in many medical, biodemographic, and neuroimaging studies. The aim of this paper is to study functional Cox models with right-censored data in the presence of both functional and scalar covariates. We study the asymptotic properties of the maximum partial likelihood estimator and establish the asymptotic normality and efficiency of the estimator of the finite-dimensional estimator. Under the framework of reproducing kernel Hilbert space, the estimator of the coefficient function for a functional covariate achieves the minimax optimal rate of convergence under a…
We revisit the estimation of the extreme value index for randomly censored data from a heavy tailed distribution. We introduce a new class of estimators which encompasses earlier proposals given in Worms and Worms (2014) and Beirlant et al. (2018), which were shown to have good bias properties compared with the pseudo maximum likelihood estimator proposed in Beirlant et al. (2007) and Einmahl et al. (2008). However the asymptotic normality of the type of estimators first proposed in Worms and Worms (2014) was still lacking, in the random threshold case. We derive an asymptotic representation a…
In this paper, we introduce new parametric and semiparametric regression techniques for a recurrent event process subject to random right censoring. We develop models for the cumula- tive mean function and provide asymptotically normal estimators. Our semiparametric model which relies on a single-index assumption can be seen as a dimension reduction technique that, contrary to a fully nonparametric approach, is not stroke by the curse of dimensional- ity when the number of covariates is high. We discuss data-driven techniques to choose the parameters involved in the estimation procedures and p…
We propose a censored quantile regression estimator motivated by unbiased estimating equations. Under the usual conditional independence assumption of the survival time and the censoring time given the covariates, we show that the proposed estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. We develop an efficient computational algorithm which uses existing quantile regression code. As a result, bootstrap-type inference can be efficiently implemented. We illustrate the finite-sample performance of the proposed method by simulation studies and analysis of a survival data set.
In making inference on the relation between failure and exposure histories in the Cox semiparametric model, the maximum partial likelihood estimator (MPLE) of the finite dimensional odds parameter, and the Breslow estimator of the baseline survival function, are known to achieve full efficiency when data is available for all time on all cohort members, even when the covariates are time dependent. When cohort sizes become too large for the collection of complete data, sampling schemes such as nested case control sampling must be used and, under various models, there exist estimators based on th…
Let $ (T_i)_i$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables (r.v.) of interest distributed as $ T$ and $(X_i)_i$ be a corresponding vector of covariates taking values on $ \mathbb{R}^d$. In censorship models the r.v. $T$ is subject to random censoring by another r.v. $C$. In this paper we built a new kernel estimator based on the so-called synthetic data of the mean squared relative error for the regression function. We establish the uniform almost sure convergence with rate over a compact set and its asymptotic normality. The asymptotic variance is explicitly…
We propose a general index model for survival data, which generalizes many commonly used semiparametric survival models and belongs to the framework of dimension reduction. Using a combination of geometric approach in semiparametrics and martingale treatment in survival data analysis, we devise estimation procedures that are feasible and do not require covariate-independent censoring as assumed in many dimension reduction methods for censored survival data. We establish the root-$n$ consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators and derive the most efficient estimator in this …
Though Gaussian graphical models have been widely used in many scientific fields, relatively limited progress has been made to link graph structures to external covariates. We propose a Gaussian graphical regression model, which regresses both the mean and the precision matrix of a Gaussian graphical model on covariates. In the context of co-expression quantitative trait locus (QTL) studies, our method can determine how genetic variants and clinical conditions modulate the subject-level network structures, and recover both the population-level and subject-level gene networks. Our framework enc…
