According to the E.L. Feinberg viewpoint on the possibility of a semi-bare electron state we may expect a state of electron with non-equilibrium Coulomb field during the time range of {γ^2 λ/c}, where γ is the Lorents-factor of electron, c is light velocity and λ is the wavelength corresponding to a frequency in Fourier expansion of the Coulomb field of relativistic electron. If this non-equilibrium Coulomb field has a spatial asymmetry, a relativistic electron may be deflected by its own Coulomb field. For the {γ^2 λ/c=1m} we may observe this effect in macroscopic mode when the electrons are grouped in bunches with the population Ne=10^8. We present in this paper the experimental observation of the deflection of an electron beam by an asymmetrical non-equilibrium Coulomb field of electron bunch. The experiment was performed on the relativistic electron beam of the microtron of Tomsk Polytechnic University.
A compact X-ray Free Electron Laser (SwissFEL) is under development at the Paul Scherrer Institute. To increase facility efficiency the main linac will operate in two electron bunch mode. The two bunches are separated in time by 28 ns and sent to two undulator lines. The combination of two beam lines should produce short X-ray pulses covering wavelength range from 1 to 70 Å with submicron position stability. To separate the two bunches, a novel electron beam switching system is being developed. The total deflection is achieved with a combination of high Q-factor resonant deflector magnet, foll…
In a previous paper we discussed the physics of a microbunched electron beam kicked by the dipole field of a corrector magnet by describing the kinematics of coherent undulator radiation after the kick. We demonstrated that the effect of aberration of light supplies the basis for understanding phenomena like the deflection of coherent undulator radiation by a dipole magnet. We illustrated this fact by examining the operation of an XFEL under the steady state assumption, that is a harmonic time dependence. We argued that in this particular case the microbunch front tilt has no objective meaning…
Coulomb interaction between charged particles is a well-known phenomenon in many areas of researches. In general the Coulomb repulsion force broadens the pulse width of an electron bunch and limits the temporal resolution of many scientific facilities such as ultrafast electron diffraction and x-ray free-electron lasers. Here we demonstrate a scheme that actually makes use of Coulomb force to compress a relativistic electron beam. Furthermore, we show that the Coulomb-driven bunch compression process does not introduce additional timing jitter, which is in sharp contrast to the conventional ra…
Terahertz-driven dielectric-lined waveguides (DLWs) have uses in electron manipulation; in particular deflection, acceleration, and focussing. A rectangular DLW has been optimised for deflection of 100 keV electrons using a THz pulse with a centre frequency 0.5 THz. Electron-THz interaction and the effect of electron bunch injection timing on maximising deflection is presented. DLWs and corrugated waveguides are compared to discuss relative advantages and disadvantages.
The RadiaBeam/SLAC dechirper, a structure consisting of pairs of flat, metallic, corrugated plates, %a corrugated structure in flat geometry, has been installed just upstream of the undulators in the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). As a dechirper, with the beam passing between the plates on axis, longitudinal wakefields are induced that can remove unwanted energy chirp in the beam. However, with the beam passing off axis, strong transverse wakes are also induced. This mode of operation has already been used for the production of intense, multi-color photon beams using the Fresh-Slice techn…
Expansion dynamics of single-species, non-neutral clouds, such as electron bunches used in ultrafast electron microscopy, show novel behavior due to high acceleration of particles in the cloud interior. This often leads to electron bunching and dynamical formation of a density shock in the outer regions of the bunch. We develop analytic fluid models to capture these effects, and the analytic predictions are validated by PIC and N-particle simulations. In the space-charge dominated regime, two and three dimensional systems with Gaussian initial densities show bunching and a strong shock respons…
A capability to provide a large variety of bunch patterns is crucial for the concept of the Project X serving MW-range beam to several experiments simultaneously. This capability will be realized by the Medium Energy Beam Transport's (MEBT) chopping system that will divert 80% of all bunches of the initially 5mA, 2.1 MeV CW 162.5 MHz beam to an absorber according to a pre-programmed bunch-by-bunch selection. Being considered one of the most challenging components, the chopping system will be tested at the Project X Injector Experiment (PXIE) facility that will be built at Fermilab as a prototy…
The influence of the space charge fields on the dynamics of the particles of the bunch, which is moved in a bending magnet is calculated. It is shown, that such influence of the Coulomb force on the energy of the particles of a modulated beam causes in the decreasing of the bunch energy spread during the compression due to energy deviation along the compressed bunch, i.e. bunch cooling. The necessary conditions of the maximal cooling are found. The attainable ordering of the bunch is investigated.
The coherent radiation of the electron beam with account of particle position correlations because of strong Coulomb interaction is considered. For the first time it is shown that the coherency of the radiation of the bunch with account of correlations depend on the mean inter particle distance (mean density of the bunch). The conditions of coherency are found. The influence of deviations from mean distance on the radiation coherency is considered.
We derive analytical expressions for external fields of a charged relativistic bunch with a circular cross section. At distances far from the bunch, the field reduces to the relativistic modified Coulomb form and in the near region, reproduce the external fields of a continuous beam. If the bunch is surrounded by conducting surfaces, the bunch self-fields are modified. Image fields generated by a bunch between two parallel conducting planes are studied in detail. Exact summation of image fields by the direct method invented by Laslett allows the infinite series to be represented in terms of el…
As an important measure of improving the efficiency and usability of X-ray free electron laser facilities, simultaneous operation of multiple undulator lines realized by a beam distribution system has become a standard configuration in the recent built XFEL facilities. In Shanghai, SXFEL-UF, the first soft X-ray free electron laser user facility in China, has finished construction and started commissioning recently. Electron beam from linac is alternately distributed between the two parallel undulator beam lines by a beam distribution system with a 6° deflection line. The beam distribution sys…
We derive analytical expressions for external fields of a relativistic bunch of charged particles with a circular and an elliptical cross section under different boundary conditions and interaction of the fields with an accelerator structural elements. The particle density in the bunch is assumed to be uniform as well as non-uniform. At distances far apart from the bunch, in free space the field reduces to the relativistic modified Coulomb form for a pointlike charge and at small distances the expressions reproduce the external fields of a continuous beam. In an ultra-relativistic limit the lo…
High resolution single-shot non-relativistic ultrafast electron microscopy(UEM) relies on adaptive optics to compress high intensity bunches using Radio Frequency (RF) cavities. We present a comprehensive discussion of the analytic approaches available to characterize bunch dynamics as an electron bunch goes through a longitudinal focal point after an RF cavity where space charge effects can be large. Methods drawn from the Coulomb explosion literature, the accelerator physics literature and the analytic Gaussian model developed for UEM are compared, utilized and extended in some cases. In par…
The effects of coherently enhanced radiation reaction on the motion of subwavelength electron bunches in interaction with intense laser pulses are analyzed. The radiation reaction force behaves as a radiation pressure in the laser beam direction, combined with a viscous force in the perpendicular direction. Due to Coulomb expansion of the electron bunch, coherent radiation reaction effects only occur in the initial stage of the laser-bunch interaction while the bunch is still smaller than the wavelength. It is shown that this initial stage can have observable effects on the trajectory of the b…
We describe an external electron injection scheme for the AWAKE experiment. We use scattering in two foils, that are necessary as vacuum window and laser beam dump, to decrease the betatron function of the incoming electron beam for injection and matching into plasma wakefields driven by a self-modulated proton bunch. We show that, for a total aluminum foil thickness of $\sim 280\, μ$m, multiple Coulomb scattering increases the beam emittance by a factor of $\sim 10$ and decreases the betatron function by a factor of $\sim 3$. The plasma in the accelerator is created by a ionizing laser pulse,…
There are implementations and proposals for using microwave or optical radiation for electron acceleration, undulation, deflection, and spatial as well as temporal focusing. Using terahertz (THz) radiation in such applications can be superior to microwave or optical radiation since THz pulses can be generated with significantly smaller temporal jitter to the electron bunch to be manipulated as compared to microwave pulses, and contrary to the optical pulses, the much larger wavelength of THz pulses compares well with typical sizes of electron bunches. Recently generation of ultrashort THz puls…
We determine the limit of the lowest achievable photoemitted electron temperature, and therefore the maximum achievable electron brightness, due to heating just after emission into vacuum, applicable to dense relativistic or nonrelativistic photoelectron beams. This heating is due to poorly screened Coulomb interactions equivalent to disorder induced heating seen in ultracold neutral plasmas. We first show that traditional analytic methods of Coulomb collisions fail for the calculation of this strongly coupled heating. Instead, we employ an N-body tree algorithm to compute the universal scalin…
We report on a self-organizing, quasi-stable regime of laser proton acceleration, producing 1 GeV nano-Coulomb proton bunches from laser foil interaction at an intensity of 7*10^21 W/cm2. The results are obtained from 2D PIC simulations, using circular polarized light normally incident on a planar, 500 nm thick hydrogen foil with Gaussian transverse profile. While foil plasma driven in the wings of the driving pulse is dispersed, a stable central clump with 1 - 2 lamda diameter is forming on the axis. The stabilisation is related to laser light having passed the transparent parts of the foil i…
We present a method to measure transverse size and position of an electron or proton beam, close to the injection point in plasma wakefields, where other diagnostics are not available. We show that transverse size measurements are in agreement with values expected from the beam optics with a $< 10\%$ uncertainty. We confirm the deflection of the low-energy 18 MeV electron beam trajectory by the Earth's magnetic field. This measurement can be used to correct for this effect and set proper electron bunch injection parameters. The advanced wakefield experiment at CERN (AWAKE) relies on these meas…

We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme to produce ultrashort and ultrastable MeV electron beam. In this scheme, the electron beam produced in a photocathode radio-frequency (rf) gun first expands under its own Coulomb force with which a positive energy chirp is imprinted in the beam longitudinal phase space. The beam is then sent through a double bend achromat with positive longitudinal dispersion where electrons at the bunch tail with lower energies follow shorter paths and thus catch up with the bunch head, leading to longitudinal bunch compression. We show that with optimized parameter s…
Dielectric lined waveguides are under extensive study as accelerating structures that can be excited by electron beams. Rectangular dielectric structures are used both in proof of principle experiments for new accelerating schemes and for studying the electronic properties of the structure loading material. Analysis of Cherenkov radiation generated by high current relativistic electron bunch passing through a rectangular waveguide with transversal isotropic dielectric loading has been carried out. Some of the materials used for the waveguide loading of accelerating structures (sapphire, cerami…
An active plasma lens focuses the beam in both the horizontal and vertical planes simultaneously using a magnetic field generated by a discharge current through the plasma. A beam size of 5--10 $μ$m can be achieved within a short distance using a focusing gradient on the order of 100 T/m. The active plasma lens is therefore an attractive element for plasma wakefield acceleration, because an ultra-small size of the witness electron beam is required for injection into the plasma wakefield to minimize emittance growth and to enhance the capturing efficiency. When the drive beam and witness electr…
The concepts in this thesis comprise three groups focusing on: (1) fast electron sources, (2) THz injectors, and (3) THz linacs. First, the feasibility of ultrafast, high-yield electron emitters based on nanostructured cathodes is demonstrated. Benefitting from field enhancement effects, namely tip-enhancement and plasmonic enhancement, laser-induced field emission is realized over large, dense and highly uniform field emitter arrays. The theoretical principles of these field emitter arrays are studied and their suitability for pico-Coulomb charge production over femtosecond time-scales is con…
