We show that the complex saddle points of the no-boundary wave function with a positive cosmological constant and a positive scalar potential have a representation in which the geometry consists of a regular Euclidean AdS domain wall that makes a smooth transition to a Lorentzian, inflationary universe that is asymptotically deSitter. The transition region between AdS and dS regulates the volume divergences of the AdS action and accounts for the phases that explain the classical behavior of the final configuration. This leads to a dual formulation in which the semiclassical no-boundary measure is given in terms of the partition function of field theories on the final boundary that are certain relevant deformations of the CFTs that occur in AdS/CFT. We conjecture that the resulting dS/CFT duality holds also beyond the leading order approximation.
We show in some lower-dimensional supergravity models that the holographic counterterms which are needed in the AdS/CFT correspondence to make the theory finite, coincide with the counterterms that are needed to make the action supersymmetric without imposing any boundary conditions on the fields.
In this work we construct holographic boundary theories for linearized 3D gravity, for a general family of finite or quasi-local boundaries. These boundary theories are directly derived from the dynamics of 3D gravity by computing the effective action for a geometric boundary observable, which measures the geodesic length from a given boundary point to some centre in the bulk manifold. We identify the general form for these boundary theories and find that these are Liouville like with a coupling to the boundary Ricci scalar. This is illustrated with various examples, which each offer interesti…
Recently, it is found that when an external magnetic field parallel to the boundary is applied, Weyl anomaly gives rises to a new anomalous current transport in the vicinity of the boundary. At the leading order of closeness from the boundary, the current is determined universally by the central charge of the theory. In this paper, we give a holographic proof for the existence and universality for this transport phenomena. We show that the current is independent of boundary conditions in four dimensions while it depends on boundary conditions in other dimensions. We also study the backreaction…
Neumann boundary condition plays an important role in the initial proposal of holographic dual of boundary conformal field theory, which has yield many interesting results and passed several non-trivial tests. In this paper, we show that Dirichlet boundary condition works as well as Neumann boundary condition. For instance, it includes AdS solution and obeys the g-theorem. Furthermore, it can produce the correct expression of one point function, the boundary Weyl anomaly and the universal relations between them. We also study the relative boundary condition for gauge fields, which is the count…
Due to the Weyl anomaly, an axial vector field produces novel anomalous chiral currents in spacetime with boundaries. Remarkably, the chiral current is not invariant under the gauge transformation of axial vector fields. As a result, more potential terms appear, and the chiral current becomes larger than the electric current near the boundary. This paper investigates the anomalous chiral current in AdS/BCFT. We find that the minimal holographic model of the axial vector field cannot produce the expected chiral current. To resolve this problem, we propose adding a suitable boundary action. Furt…
We introduce higher-derivative Gauss-Bonnet correction terms in the gravity sector and we relate the modified gravity theory in the bulk to the strongly coupled quantum field theory on a de Sitter boundary. We study the process of holographic thermalization by examining three nonlocal observables, the two-point function, the Wilson loop and the holographic entanglement entropy. We study the time evolution of these three observables and we find that as the strength of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is increased, the saturation time of the thermalization process to reach thermal equilibrium becomes s…
We consider the path-sum of Ponzano-Regge with additional boundary contributions in the context of the holographic principle of Quantum Gravity. We calculate an holographic projection in which the bulk partition function goes to a semi-classical limit while the boundary state functional remains quantum-mechanical. The properties of the resulting boundary theory are discussed.
Self-duality in Euclidean gravitational set ups is a tool for finding remarkable geometries in four dimensions. From a holographic perspective, self-duality sets an algebraic relationship between two a priori independent boundary data: the boundary energy-momentum tensor and the boundary Cotton tensor. This relationship, which can be viewed as resulting from a topological mass term for gravity boundary dynamics, survives under the Lorentzian signature and provides a tool for generating exact bulk Einstein spaces carrying, among others, nut charge. In turn, the holographic analysis exhibits per…
Computing the holographic entanglement entropy proposed by Ryu-Takayanagi shows that thermal energy near boundary region in $AdS_3$ gain maximum of the temperature. The absolute maxima of temperature is $T^{Max}_{E}= \frac{4G_3 ε_{\infty}}{l}$. By simple physical investigations it has become possible to predict a phase transition of first order at critical temperature $T_c\leq T_{E}$. As they predict a tail or root towards which the AdS space ultimately tend, the boundary is considered thermalized. The Phase transitions of this form have received striking theoretical and experimental verificat…
Gravity is uniquely situated in between classical topological field theories and standard local field theories. This can be seen in the the quasi-local nature of gravitational observables, but is nowhere more apparent than in gravity's holographic formulation. Holography holds promise for simplifying computations in quantum gravity. While holographic descriptions of three-dimensional spacetimes and of spacetimes with a negative cosmological constant are well-developed, a complete boundary description of zero curvature, four-dimensional spacetime is not currently available. Building on previous…
In the presence of boundaries the integrated conformal anomaly is modified by the boundary terms so that the anomaly is non-vanishing in any (even or odd) dimension. The boundary terms are due to extrinsic curvature whose exact structure in $d=3$ and $d=4$ has recently been identified. In this note we present a holographic calculation of those terms in two different prescriptions for the holographic description of the boundary CFT. We stress the role of supersymmetry when discussing the holographic description of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM on a $4$-manifold with boundaries.
We obtain the classical holographic relation for the general Lovelock gravity and decompose the full Lagrangian into the bulk term and the surface term, expressed as a total derivative $\partial_μJ^μ$. By classical holographic relation, we mean that $J^μ$ is determined completely by the bulk term. We find that the bulk term is not degenerate, or first-order in this foliation-independent approach. We then consider the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism where the foliation coordinate $w$ is treated as special. We obtain the classical holographic-degenerate relation with the first-order bulk t…
This paper is an extended version of our short letter on a new proposal for holographic boundary conformal field, i.e., BCFT. By using the Penrose-Brown-Henneaux (PBH) transformation, we successfully obtain the expected boundary Weyl anomaly. The obtained boundary central charges satisfy naturally a c-like theorem holographically. We then develop an approach of holographic renormalization for BCFT, and reproduce the correct boundary Weyl anomaly. This provides a non-trivial check of our proposal. We also investigate the holographic entanglement entropy of BCFT and find that our proposal gives …
We propose a new holographic dual of conformal field theory defined on a manifold with boundaries, i.e. BCFT. Our proposal can apply to general boundaries and agrees with arXiv:1105.5165 for the special case of a disk and half plane. Using the new proposal of AdS/BCFT, we successfully obtain the expected boundary Weyl anomaly and the obtained boundary central charges satisfy naturally a c-like theorem holographically. We also investigate the holographic entanglement entropy of BCFT and find that the minimal surface must be normal to the bulk spacetime boundaries when they intersect. Interestin…
We study boundary conditions for 3-dimensional higher spin gravity that admit asymptotic symmetry algebras expected of 2-dimensional induced higher spin theories in the light cone gauge. For the higher spin theory based on sl(3, R) plus sl(3,R) algebra, our boundary conditions give rise to one copy of classical W3 and a copy of sl(3,R) or su(1,2) Kac-Moody symmetry algebra. We propose that the higher spin theories with these boundary conditions describe appropriate chiral induced W-gravity theories on the boundary. We also consider boundary conditions of spin-3 higher spin gravity that admit u…
The holographic superconductor is the holographic dual of superconductivity, but there is no Meissner effect in the standard holographic superconductor. This is because the boundary Maxwell field is added as an external source and is not dynamical. We show the Meissner effect analytically by imposing the semiclassical Maxwell equation on the AdS boundary. Unlike in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, the extreme Type I limit cannot be reached even in the $e\to\infty$ limit where $e$ is the $U(1)$ coupling of the boundary Maxwell field. This is due to the bound current which is present even in the…
We show that ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity with a cosmological constant can be expressed as constrained topological field theory based on the supergroup $Osp(1|4)$. The theory is then extended to include timelike boundaries with finite spatial area. Consistent boundary conditions are found which induce a boundary theory based on a supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory. The boundary state space is constructed from states of the boundary supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory on the punctured two sphere and naturally satisfies the Bekenstein bound, where area is measured by the area operator of quantum sup…
Counterterm actions are constructed along the ADM formalism. It is shown that the counterterm action can be intrinsically written in terms of intrinsic boundary geometry. Using the expression of counterterm action, we obtain a general form of the counterterm action available for any $d$-dimensional spherical boundary. In the description, we also derive {\it arbitrary} dimensional holographic conformal anomaly. It is also shown that counterterm actions for AF spaces can be obtained from the AdS description just as taking the limit of $\ell \to \infty$. An asymptotically flat spacetime with non-…
We present a line of research aimed at investigating holographic dualities in the context of three dimensional quantum gravity within finite bounded regions. The bulk quantum geometrodynamics is provided by the Ponzano-Regge state-sum model, which defines 3d quantum gravity as a discrete topological quantum field theory (TQFT). This formulation provides an explicit and detailed definition of the quantum boundary states, which allows a rich correspondence between quantum boundary conditions and boundary theories, thereby leading to holographic dualities between 3d quantum gravity and 2d statist…
Using holographic-fluid techniques, we discuss some aspects of the integrability properties of Einstein's equations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We review and we amend the results of 1506.04813 on how exact four-dimensional Einstein spacetimes, which are algebraically special with respect to Petrov's classification, can be reconstructed from boundary data: this is possible if the boundary metric supports a traceless, symmetric and conserved complex rank-two tensor, which is related to the boundary Cotton and energy-momentum tensors, and if the hydrodynamic congruence is shearle…
We study the holographic entanglement entropy in a (d+1)-dimensional boundary quantum field theory at both the zero and finite temperature. The phase diagrams for the holographic entanglement entropy at various temperatures are obtained by solving the entangled surfaces in the different homology. We also verify the Araki-Lieb inequality and illustrate the entanglement plateau.
In this paper, we find the boundary dual of the symplectic form for the bulk fields in any entanglement wedge. The key ingredient is Uhlmann holonomy, which is a notion of parallel transport of purifications of density matrices based on a maximisation of transition probabilities. Using a replica trick, we compute this holonomy for curves of reduced states in boundary subregions of holographic QFTs at large N, subject to changes of operator insertions on the boundary. It is shown that the Berry phase along Uhlmann parallel paths may be written as the integral of an abelian connection whose curv…
The Hamiltonian of classical anti-de Sitter gravity is a pure boundary term on-shell. If this remains true in non-perturbative quantum gravity then i) boundary observables will evolve unitarily in time and ii) the algebra of boundary observables is the same at all times. In particular, information available at the boundary at any one time t_1 remains available at any other time t_2. Since there is also a sense in which the equations of motion propagate information into the bulk, these observations raise what may appear to be potential paradoxes concerning simultaneous (or spacelike separated) …
Motivated by the ability to consistently apply the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription for general convex surfaces and the relationship between entanglement and geometry in tensor networks, we introduce a novel, covariant bulk object - the holographic slice. The holographic slice is found by considering the continual removal of short range information in a boundary state. It thus provides a natural interpretation as the bulk dual of a series of coarse-grained holographic states. The slice possesses many desirable properties that provide consistency checks for its boundary interpretation. These include…
The relation between Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) and tensor network is explored from the perspectives of bulk-boundary duality and holographic entanglement entropy. We find that the LQG spin-network states in a space $Σ$ with boundary $\partialΣ$ is an exact holographic mapping similar to the proposal in arXiv:1309.6282. The tensor network, understood as the boundary quantum state, is the output of the exact holographic mapping emerging from a coarse graining procedure of spin-networks. Furthermore, when a region $A$ and its complement $\bar{A}$ are specified on the boundary $\partialΣ$, we sho…
We study the time evolution of holographic subregion complexity (HSC) in Vaidya spacetime with dS boundary. The subregion on the boundary is chosen to be a sphere within the cosmological horizon. It is found that the behaviour of HSC is similar to that in cases with flat boundary. The whole evolution can be divided into four stages: First, it grows almost linearly, then the growth slows down; After reaching a maximum it drops down quickly and gets to saturation finally. The linear growth rate in the first stage is found to depend almost only on the the mass parameter. As the subregion size app…
We propose a measure of holographic information based on a causal wedge construction. The motivation behind this comes from an attempt to understand how boundary field theories can holographically reconstruct spacetime. We argue that given the knowledge of the reduced density matrix in a spatial region of the boundary, one should be able to reconstruct at least the corresponding bulk causal wedge. In attempt to quantify the `amount of information' contained in a given spatial region in field theory, we consider a particular bulk surface (specifically a co-dimension two surface in the bulk spac…
In this paper we discuss geodesic Witten diagrams in generic holographic conformal field theories with boundary or defect. Boundary CFTs allow two different decompositions of two-point functions into conformal blocks: boundary channel and ambient channel. Building on earlier work, we derive a holographic dual of the boundary channel decomposition in terms of bulk-to-bulk propagators on lower dimensional AdS slices. In the situation in which we can treat the boundary or defect as a perturbation around pure AdS spacetime, we obtain the leading corrections to the two-point function both in bounda…
In this note, we establish the 2-D Quantum Inequalities - first proved by Flanagan - for all CFTs with a causal holographic dual. Following the treatment of Kelly \& Wall, we establish that the Boundary Causality Condition in an asymptotic AdS spacetime implies the Quantum Inequalities on the boundary. Our results extend easily to curved spacetime and are stable under deformations of the CFT by relevant operators. We discuss higher dimensional generalizations and possible connections to recent bounds on $a/c$ in 4-D CFTs.
We extend the holographic duality between 3d pure gravity and the 2d Ising CFT proposed in [Phys. Rev. D 85 (2012) 024032] to CFTs with boundaries. Besides the usual asymptotic boundary, the dual bulk spacetime now has a real cutoff, on which live branes with finite tension, giving Neumann boundary condition on the metric tensor. The strongly coupled bulk theory requires that we dress the well-known semiclassical AdS/BCFT answer with boundary gravitons, turning the partition function into the form of Virasoro characters. Using this duality, we relate the brane tensions to the modular S-matrix …
Irrelevant operators in a CFT modify the usual Weyl transformation of the metric. A metric beta-function turns on, which modifies the Weyl anomalies as well. In this paper, we study the relation between bulk diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformation at the boundary when a massive scalar field, which sources irrelevant operators at the boundary, is coupled to the bulk metric. Considering the effect of the backreaction generated by the scalar field, we provide a holographic description of the boundary metric beta-function and anomalies. Our results represent an additional test of the AdS/CFT corre…
We consider a model of a holographic braneworld universe in which a cosmological fluid occupies a 3+1 dimensional brane located at the boundary of the asymptotic AdS$_5$ bulk. We combine the AdS/CFT correspondence and the second Randall-Sundrum (RSII) model to establish a relationship between the RSII braneworld cosmology and the boundary metric induced by the time dependent bulk geometry. In the framework of the Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmology we discuss some physically interesting scenarios involving the RSII and holographic braneworlds.
We consider general black hole solutions in five-dimensional spacetime in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We obtain a cosmological evolution via the gravity/gauge theory duality (holography) by defining appropriate boundary conditions on a four-dimensional boundary hypersurface. The standard counterterms are shown to renormalize the bare parameters of the system (the four-dimensional Newton's constant and cosmological constant). We discuss the thermodynamics of cosmological evolution and present various examples. The standard brane-world scenarios are shown to be special case…
For an embedded conformal hypersurface with boundary, we construct critical order local invariants and their canonically associated differential operators. These are obtained holographically in a construction that uses a singular Yamabe problem and a corresponding minimal hypersurface with boundary. They include an extrinsic Q-curvature for the boundary of the embedded conformal manifold and, for its interior, the Q-curvature and accompanying boundary transgression curvatures. This gives universal formulae for extrinsic analogs of Branson Q-curvatures that simultaneously generalize the Willmor…
A variational formulation is given for a theory of gravity coupled to a massive vector in four dimensions, with Asymptotically Lifshitz boundary conditions on the fields. For theories with critical exponent z=2 we obtain a well-defined variational principle by explicitly constructing two actions with local boundary counterterms. As part of our analysis we obtain solutions of these theories on a neighborhood of spatial infinity, study the asymptotic symmetries, and consider different definitions of the boundary stress tensor and associated charges. A constraint on the boundary data for the fiel…
We investigate the formation of topological defects in the course of a dynamical phase transition with different boundary conditions in a ring from AdS/CFT correspondence. According to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, quenching the system across the critical point to symmetry-breaking phase will result in topological defects -- winding numbers -- in a compact ring. By setting two different boundary conditions, i.e., Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions for the spatial component of the gauge fields in the AdS boundary, we achieve the holographic superfluid and holographic superconductor models,…
In this paper we discuss geodesic Witten diagrams in general holographic conformal field theories with boundary or defect. In boundary or defect conformal field theory, two-point functions are non-trivial and can be decomposed into conformal blocks in two distinct ways; ambient channel decomposition and boundary channel decomposition. In our previous work we only consider two-point functions of same operators. We generalize our previous work to a situation where operators in two-point functions are different. We obtain two distinct decomposition for two-point functions of different operators.
We discuss Holographic Renormalization Group equations in the presence of fermions and form fields in the bulk. The existence of a holographically dual quantum field theory for a given bulk gravity theory imposes consistency conditions on the ranks of the form fields, the fermion - form field couplings, and leads to a novel Ward identity.
When a black hole forms from collapse in a holographic theory, the information in the black hole interior remains encoded in the boundary. We prove that the area of the black hole's apparent horizon is precisely the entropy associated to coarse graining over the information in its interior, subject to knowing the exterior geometry. This is the maximum holographic entanglement entropy that is compatible with all classical measurements conducted outside of the apparent horizon. We identify the boundary dual to this entropy and explain why it obeys a Second Law of Thermodynamics.
We formulate new boundary conditions that prove well defined variational principle and finite response functions for conformal gravity (CG). In the Anti--de Sitter/conformal field theory framework, gravity theory that is considered in the bulk gives information about the corresponding boundary theory. The metric is split in the holographic coordinate, used to approach the boundary, and the metric at the boundary. One can consider the quantities in the bulk perturbing the (one dimension lower) boundary metric in holographic coordinate. The response functions to fluctuations of the boundary metr…
Solutions of $(d+1)$-dimensional gravity coupled to a scalar field are obtained, which holographically realize interface and boundary CFTs. The solution utilizes a Janus-like $\mathrm{AdS}_d$ slicing ansatz and corresponds to a deformation of the CFT by a spatially-dependent coupling of a relevant operator. The BCFT solutions are singular in the bulk, but physical quantities such as the holographic entanglement entropy can be calculated.

We employ the Noether procedure to derive a general formula for the radially conserved heat current in AdS planar black holes with certain transverse and traceless perturbations, for a general class of gravity theories. For Einstein gravity, the general higher-order Lovelock gravities and also a class of Horndeski gravities, we derive the boundary stress tensor and show that the resulting boundary heat current matches precisely the bulk Noether current.
By relaxing the regularity conditions imposed in arXiv:1107.1722 on half-BPS solutions to six-dimensional Type~4b supergravity, we enlarge the space of solutions to include two new half-BPS configurations, which we refer to as the \kap\ and the \funnel. We give evidence that the \kap\ and \funnel\ can be interpreted as fully back-reacted brane solutions with respectively $AdS_2$ and $AdS_2\times S^2$ world volumes. \kap\ and \funnel\ solutions with a single asymptotic $AdS_3 \times S^3$ region are constructed analytically. We argue that \kap\ solutions provide simple examples of holographic du…
Holography has provided valuable insights into the time evolution of strongly coupled gauge theories in a fixed spacetime. However, this framework is insufficient if this spacetime is dynamical. We present a scheme to evolve a four-dimensional, strongly interacting gauge theory coupled to four-dimensional dynamical gravity in the semiclassical regime. As in previous work, we use holography to evolve the quantum gauge theory stress tensor, whereas the four-dimensional metric evolves according to Einstein's equations coupled to the expectation value of the stress tensor. The novelty of our appro…
We define bulk/boundary maps corresponding to quantum gravity states in the tensorial group field theory formalism, for quantum geometric models sharing the same type of quantum states of loop quantum gravity. The maps are defined in terms of a partition of the quantum geometric data associated to an open graph into bulk and boundary ones, in the spin representation. We determine the general condition on the entanglement structure of the state that makes the bulk/boundary map isometric (a necessary condition for holographic behaviour), and we analyse different types of quantum states, identify…
We determine the boundary terms of the free higher-spin action which reproduce the AdS Fronsdal equations in an AdS manifold with a finite distance boundary. The boundary terms are further constrained by the gauge invariance of the total action. We show that, for spins larger than two, no local boundary term can restore the full gauge symmetry, and the broken symmetry corresponds to higher-spin Weyl transformations on the boundary CFT. The boundary action is used for the evaluation of the on-shell higher-spin AdS action in terms of the boundary data given by a conformal higher-spin field.
A simple derivation of the bound on entropy is given and the holographic principle is discussed. We estimate the number of quantum states inside space region on the base of uncertainty relation. The result is compared with the Bekenstein formula for entropy bound, which was initially derived from the generalized second law of thermodynamics for black holes. The holographic principle states that the entropy inside a region is bounded by the area of the boundary of that region. This principle can be called the kinematical holographic principle. We argue that it can be derived from the dynamical …
Relaxing the Bondi gauge, the solution space of three-dimensional gravity in the metric formulation has been shown to contain an additional free function that promotes the boundary metric to a Lorentz or Carroll frame, in asymptotically AdS or flat spacetimes. We pursue this analysis and show that the solution space also admits a finite symplectic structure, obtained taking advantage of the built-in ambiguities. The smoothness of the flat limit of the AdS symplectic structure selects a prescription in which the holographic anomaly appears in the boundary Lorentz symmetry, that rotates the fram…
We argue that states with nontrivial horizontal charges of BTZ black hole can be excited by ordinary falling matter including Hawking radiation. The matter effect does not break the integrability condition of the charges on the horizon. Thus we are able to trace the proccesses in which the matter imprints the information on the horizon by use of the charged states. It is naturally expected that in the thermal equilibrium with the Hawking radiation the black hole wanders ergodically through different horizontal states due to thermal fluctuation of incoming matter. This fact strengthens plausibi…
The 3D Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with planar, single-edged, boundary is considered. It is shown that its holographic reduction on a flat euclidean 2D spacetime is a scalar field theory describing a conserved chiral current, which corresponds to the electric continuity equation. Differently from the theory with planar, double-edged boundary, in this holographic bulk-boundary approach physical quantities like the chiral velocity of the edge excitations depend also on the non-topological Maxwell term.
The correspondence between string theory in Anti-de Sitter space and super Yang Mills theory is an example of the Holographic principle according to which a quantum theory with gravity must be describable by a boundary theory. However, arguments given so far are incomplete because, while the bulk theory has been related to a boundary theory, the holographic bound saying that the boundary theory has only one bit of information per Planck area has not been justified. We show here that this bound is the physical interpretation of one of the unusual aspects of the correspondence between Anti-de Si…
Gravity/fluid correspondence becomes an important tool to investigate the strongly correlated fluids. We carefully investigate the holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface by considering different boundary conditions in the scenario of gravity/fluid correspondence. We find that the sonic velocity of the boundary fluids at the finite cutoff surface is critical to clarify the superficial similarity between bulk viscosity and perturbation of the pressure for the holographic fluid, where we set a special boundary condition at the finite cutoff surface to explicitly express this superficial …
We propose a holographic dual of a conformal field theory defined on a manifold with boundaries, i.e. boundary conformal field theory (BCFT). Our new holography, which may be called AdS/BCFT, successfully calculates the boundary entropy or g-function in two dimensional BCFTs and it agrees with the finite part of the holographic entanglement entropy. Moreover, we can naturally derive a holographic g-theorem. We also analyze the holographic dual of an interval at finite temperature and show that there is a first order phase transition.
