Motivated by potential applications in spintronics, we study frequency dependent spin transport in nonitinerant one-dimensional spin chains. We propose a system that behaves as a capacitor for the spin degree of freedom. It consists of a spin chain with two impurities a distance $d$ apart. We find that at low energy (frequency) the impurities flow to strong coupling, thereby effectively cutting the chain into three parts, with the middle island containing a discrete number of spin excitations. At finite frequency spin transport through the system increases. We find a strong dependence of the finite frequency characteristics both on the anisotropy of the spin chain and the applied magnetic field. We propose a method to measure the finite-frequency conductance in this system.
The magnetic and spin transport properties of a carbon chain between two armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) electrodes were studied using tight-binding Hamiltonian, mean-field Hubbard model and Landauer-Butikker formalism. The results showed that only odd-numbered carbon chains show intrinsic magnetic moments in chain-graphene junctions. It was also found that the electronic, magnetic and spin transport properties of carbon chain-graphene junctions strongly depend on the position and the length of the carbon chains between AGNR electrodes. Interestingly, we found a fully spin-polarized transm…
The electron transport between two zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) connected by carbon atomic chains has been investigated by the nonequilibrium Green's function method combined with the density functional theory. The symmetry of the orbitals in the carbon chain selects critically the modes and energies of the transporting electrons. The electron transport near the Fermi energy can be well-manipulated by the position and the number of carbon chains contacting the nanoribbons. In symmetric ZGNRs connected by a central carbon chain, a square conductance step appears at the Fermi energy becau…
Nonequilibrium electronic transport through a polymer chain is investigated by the scattering state operator method. The polymer chain is described by an electron-lattice coupling model and its two ends are connected with metal electrodes of different chemical potentials. The scattering states are shown to be a set of complete eigenstates of electrons in the system at nonequilibrium steady state. With the method, we show that the nonequilibrium Peierls transition (NEPT) does not survive the lattice relaxation and the soliton-antisoliton pair excitations. Furthermore the electronic transport th…
We propose a mechanism for perfect entanglement transport in anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) quantum spin chain systems with modulated exchange coupling along the xy plane and in the z direction. We use the principle of adiabatic quantum pumping process for entanglement transfer in the spin chain systems. In our proposed mechanism, perfect entanglement transfer can be achieved over an arbitraly long distance. We explain analytically and physically why the entanglement hops in alternate sites. We solve this problem by using the Berry phase analysis and Abelian bosonization methods. We find the conditi…
We study nonequilibrium quantum transport through a mesoscopic wire coupled via local exchange to a ferromagnetic spin chain. Using the Keldysh formalism in the self-consistent Born approximation, we identify fingerprints of the magnetic polaron state formed by hybridization of electronic and magnon states. Because of its low decoherence rate, we find coherent transport signals. Both elastic and inelastic peaks of the differential conductance are discussed as a function of external magnetic fields, the polarization of the leads and the electronic level spacing of the wire.
The particle transport through a chain of quantum dots coupled to two bosonic reservoirs is studied. For the case of reservoirs of non-interacting bosonic particles, we derive an exact set of stochastic differential equations, whose memory kernels and driving noise are characterised entirely by the properties of the reservoirs. Going to the Markovian limit an analytically solvable case is presented. The effect of interparticle interactions on the transient behaviour of the system, when both reservoirs are instantaneously coupled to an empty chain of quantum dots, is approximated by a semiclass…
Based on first-principles approaches, we study the ballistic phonon transport properties of finite monatomic carbon chains stretched between graphene nanoribbons, an $sp$-$sp^2$ hybrid carbon nanostructure that has recently seen significant experimental advances in its synthesis. We find that the lattice thermal conductance anomalously increases with tensile strain for the even-numbered carbon chains that adopt the alternating bond-length polyyne configuration. On the other hand, in the odd-numbered carbon chain cases, which assume the equal bond-length cumulene configuration, phonon conductan…
We consider a chain of Josephson-junction rhombi (proposed originally by Doucot and Vidal) in quantum regime. In a regular chain with no disorder in the maximally frustrated case when magnetic flux through each rhombi Φ_r is equal to one half of superconductive flux quantum Φ_0, Josephson current is due to correlated transport of pairs of Cooper pairs, i.e. charge is quantized in units of $4e$. Sufficiently strong deviation δΦ=|Φ_r-Φ_0/2| > δΦ^c from the maximally frustrated point brings the system back to usual $2e$-quantized supercurrent. For a regular chain δΦ^c was calculated by us previou…
An atomic carbon chain joining two graphene flakes was recently realized in a ground-breaking experiment by Jin {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 102}, 205501 (2009). We present {\it ab initio} results for the electron transport properties of such chains and demonstrate complete spin-polarization of the transmission in large energy ranges. The effect is due to the spin-polarized zig-zag edge terminating each graphene flake causing a spin-splitting of the graphene $π_z$ bands, and the chain states. Transmission occurs when the graphene $π$-states resonate with similar states in the strongly h…
Spin superfluids enable long-distance spin transport through classical ferromagnets by developing topologically stable magnetic textures. For small spins at low dimensions, however, the topological protection suffers from strong quantum fluctuations. We study the remanence of spin superfluidity inherited from the classical magnet by considering the two-terminal spin transport through a finite spin-1/2 magnetic chain with planar exchange. By fermionizing the system, we recast the spin-transport problem in terms of quasiparticle transmission through a superconducting region. We show that the top…
Inelastic transport of electrons through a two-impurity chain is studied theoretically with account of intersite Coulomb interaction, U. Both limits of ohmic transport (at low bias) and strongly non-ohmic transport (at high bias) are considered. We demonstrate that correlations, induced by a finite U, in conjunction with conventional Hubbard correlations, give rise to a distinct transport regime, with current governed by two-electron hops. This regime realizes when a single-electron hop onto the chain and a single-electron hop out of the chain are both ``blocked'' due to the finite U, so that …
We study transport properties of a strongly correlated monoatomic chain coupled to metallic leads. Our system is described by tight binding Hubbard-like model in the limit of strong on-site electron-electron interactions in the wire. The equation of motion technique in the slave boson representation has been applied to obtain analytical and numerical results. Calculated linear conductance of the system shows oscillatory behavior as a function of the wire length. We have also found similar oscillations of the electron charge in the system. Moreover our results show spontaneous spin polarization…
The low temperature transport of electron, or vibrational or electronic exciton towards polymer chains turns out to be dramatically sensitive to its interaction with transverse acoustic vibrations. We show that this interaction leads to substantial polaron effect and decoherence, which are generally stronger than those associated with longitudinal vibrations. For site-dependent interactions transverse phonons form subohmic bath leading to the quantum phase transition accompanied by full suppression of the transport at zero temperature and fast decoherence characterized by temperature dependent…
Atomic mass and interatomic interaction are the two key quantities that significantly affect the heat conduction carried by phonons. Here, we study the effects of long-range (LR) interatomic interaction and mass-disorder on the phonon transport in a one-dimensional harmonic chain withup to 10^5 atoms. We find that while LR interaction reduces the transmission of low frequency phonons, it enhances the transmission of high frequency phonons by suppressing the localization effects caused by mass disorder. Therefore, long-range interaction is able to boost heat conductance in the high temperature …
The invariant imbedding evolution equations for the amplitude reflection and transmission coefficients of a disordered 1D chain are shown to follow from the continuum limit, for weak disorder, of recursion relations between reflection (transmission) coefficients of Anderson chains of N and N-1 atoms embedded in infinite non-disordered chains. We show that various available analytical and numerical results for reflection phase distributions in the Anderson- and invariant imbedding models are in good qualitative agreement, as expected from the above equivalence of these models. We also discuss t…
We provide molecular dynamics simulation of heat transport and thermal energy diffusion in one-dimensional molecular chains with different interparticle pair potentials at zero and non-zero temperature. We model the thermal conductivity (TC) and energy diffusion in the coupled rotator chain and in the Lennard-Jones chain either without or with the confining parabolic interatomic potential. The considered chains without the confining potential have normal TC and energy diffusion, while the corresponding chains with the confining potential are characterized by anomalous (diverging with the syste…
Self-assembled aggregates of pigment molecules are potential building blocks for excitonic circuits that find their application in energy conversion and optical signal processing. Recent experimental studies of one-dimensional heterotriangulene supramolecular aggregates suggested that singlet excitons in these structures can propagate on several micron distances. We explore this possibility theoretically by combining electronic structure calculations with microscopic models for exciton transport. Detailed characterization of the structural disorder and exciton decoherence is provided. We argue…
We present exact analytical results for the differential conductance of a finite Kitaev chain in an N-S-N configuration, where the topological superconductor is contacted on both sides with normal leads. Our results are obtained with the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's functions technique, using the full spectrum of the Kitaev chain without resorting to minimal models. A closed formula for the linear conductance is given, and the analytical procedure to obtain the differential conductance for the transport mediated by higher excitations is described. The linear conductance attains the maximum …
We show how quantized transport can be realized in Floquet chains through encapsulation of a chiral or helical shift. The resulting transport is immutable rather than topological in the sense that it neither requires a band gap nor is affected by arbitrarily strong perturbations. Transport is still characterized by topological quantities but encapsulation of the shift prevents topological phase transitions. To explore immutable transport we introduce the concept of a shiftbox, explain the relevant topological quantities both for momentum-space dispersions and real-space transport, and study mo…
We consider two chains of ultrasmall Josephson junctions, coupled capacitively with each other, and investigate the transport of particle-hole pairs and the quantum phase transitions at zero temperature. For appropriate parameter ranges, the particle-hole pairs are found to play major roles in transport phenomena; condensation of such pairs leads to the superconducting state, displaying perfect drag of supercurrents along the two chains.
The ability to transport quantum information across some distance can facilitate the design and operation of a quantum processor. One-dimensional spin chains provide a compact platform to realize scalable spin transport for a solid-state quantum computer. Here, we model odd-sized donor chains in silicon under a range of experimental non-idealities, including variability of donor position within the chain. We show that the tolerance against donor placement inaccuracies is greatly improved by operating the spin chain in a mode where the electrons are confined at the Si-SiO$_2$ interface. We then…
We study a one-dimensional (1D) chain of $2N$ Majorana bound states, which interact through a local quartic interaction. This model describes for example the edge physics of a quasi 1D stack of $2N$ Kitaev chains with modified time-reversal symmetry $Tγ_iT^{-1}=γ_i$, which precludes the presence of quadratic coupling. The ground state of our 1D Majorana chain displays a four-fold periodicity in $N$, corresponding to the four distinct topological classes of the stacked Kitaev chains. We analyze the transport properties of the 1D Majorana chain, when probed by local conductors located at its end…
We show that non-Hermiticity enables topological phases with unidirectional transport in one-dimensional Floquet chains. The topological signatures of these phases are non-contractible loops in the spectrum of the Floquet propagator that are separated by an imaginary gap. Such loops occur exclusively in non-Hermitian Floquet systems. We define the corresponding topological invariant as the winding number of the Floquet propagator relative to the imaginary gap. To relate topology to transport, we introduce the concept of regularized dynamics of non-Hermitian chains. We establish that, under the…
We present an extended discussion of a recently proposed theoretical approach for off-resonance tunneling transport. The proofs and the arguments are explained at length and simple analogies and illustrations are used where possible. The result is an analytic formula for the asymptotic tunneling conductance which involves the overlap of three well defined physical quantities. We argue that the formula can be used to gain fresh insight into the tunneling transport characteristics of various systems. The formalism is applied here to molecular devices consisting of planar phenyl chains connected …
We investigate ballistic vibrational energy transport through optical phonon band in oligomeric chains in the presence of decoherence. An exact solution is obtained for the excitation density in the space-time representation in the continuous limit and this solution is used to characterize the energy transport time and intensity. Three transport mechanisms are identified such as ballistic, diffusive and directed diffusive regimes, occurring at different distances and time ranges. The crossover between the two diffusive regimes is continuous, while the switch between the ballistic and diffusive…
We study the spin transport on a S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain with external fields which provids a phase angle. The equation of motion becomes the sine-Gordon equation after Jordan-Wigner transformation and bosonization. Soliton solutions of the sine-Gordon equations for a system of finite length are found and the quantum fluctuations are calculated. The spin is transported as the soliton solutions evolves with the adiabatical variation of the phase angle in the phase space. We observe that the spin is transported by ΔS=1, as the phase angle changes by the period of 2π when the quantum fluctu…
Through an exact analysis using quantum Langevin dynamics, we demonstrate the crossover from ballistic to diffusive thermal transport in a harmonic chain with each site connected to Ohmic heat reservoirs. The temperatures of the two heat baths at the boundaries are specified from before whereas the temperatures of the interior heat reservoirs are determined self-consistently by demanding that in the steady state, on average, there is no heat current between any such (self-consistent) reservoir and the harmonic chain. Essence of our study is that the effective mean free path separating the ball…
We study the interplay of intrinsic-electronic and environmental factors on long-range charge transport across molecular chains with up to $N\sim 80$ monomers. We describe the molecular electronic structure of the chain with a tight-binding Hamiltonian. Thermal effects in the form of electron decoherence and inelastic scatterings are incorporated with the Landauer-Büttiker probe method. In short chains of up to 10 units we observe the crossover between coherent (tunneling, ballistic) motion and thermally-assisted conduction, with thermal effects enhancing the current beyond the quantum coheren…
We investigate the ac transport of magnetization in non-itinerant quantum systems such as spin chains described by the XXZ Hamiltonian. Using linear response theory, we calculate the ac magnetization current and the power absorption of such magnetic systems. Remarkably, the difference in the exchange interaction of the spin chain itself and the bulk magnets (i.e. the magnetization reservoirs), to which the spin chain is coupled, strongly influences the absorbed power of the system. This feature can be used in future spintronic devices to control power dissipation. Our analysis allows to make q…
We use a Generalised Langevin Equation (GLE) scheme to study the thermal transport of low dimensional systems. In this approach, the central classical region is connected to two realistic thermal baths kept at two different temperatures [H. Ness et al., Phys. Rev. B {\bf 93}, 174303 (2016)]. We consider model Al systems, i.e. one-dimensional atomic chains connected to three-dimensional baths. The thermal transport properties are studied as a function of the chain length $N$ and the temperature difference $ΔT$ between the baths. We calculate the transport properties both in the linear response …
We study heat conduction in quantum disordered harmonic chains connected to general heat reservoirs which are modeled as infinite collection of oscillators. Formal exact expressions for the thermal current are obtained and it is shown that, in some special cases, they reduce to Landauer-like forms. The asymptotic system size dependence of the current is analysed and is found to be similar to the classical case. It is a power law dependence and the power depends on the spectral properties of the reservoirs.
We theoretically investigate the flow of the atomic excitations in a driven chiral-coupled atomic chain with nonreciprocal decay channels. This one-dimensional system allows infinite-range dipole-dipole interaction, and enables directional guided modes of scattered light. Under a weakly driven condition, we are able to simulate the transport properties of atomic excitations between the left and right parts of the chain. In the steady states, the transport is highly dependent on the equidistant positions of the ordered array, the excitation field detunings, and the directionality of such chiral…
The anomalous thermal conductivity in spin chains observed in experiments is studied for the low temperature regime. In the effective dynamics with most realistic perturbations, the so-called Umklapp terms is irrelevant to reduce mean free path in the energy transport at even finite temperatures. This is consistent with large conductivities found in recent experiments. The Drude weight which is the prefactor in the divergent conductivity is calculated, and the temperature dependence is discussed.
Spin transport properties of the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin systems for both $S=1/2$ and S=1 are studied by applying twisted boundary magnetic field. The spin current displays significantly different behavior of the spin transport properties between $S=1/2$ and S=1 cases. For the spin-half case, a London equation for the current and the detection of an alternating electric field are proposed for the linear response regime. The correlation functions reveal the spiral nature of spin configuration for both ground state and the spinon excitations. For the spin-one chain othe…
Motivated by recent experiments of successfully carving out stable carbon atomic chains from graphene, we investigate a device structure of a carbon chain connecting two zigzag graphene nanoribbons with highly tunable spin-dependent transport properties. Our calculation based on the non-equilibrium Green's function approach combined with the density functional theory shows that the transport behavior is sensitive to the spin configuration of the leads and the bridge position in the gap. A bridge in the middle gives an overall good coupling except for around the Fermi energy where the leads wit…
We study the energetics, the electronic structure, and the ballistic transport of an infinite Au monatomic chain with an adsorbed CO molecule. We find that the bridge adsorption site is energetically favored with respect to the atop site, both at the equilibrium Au-Au spacing of the chain and at larger spacings. Instead, a substitutional configuration requires a very elongated Au-Au bond, well above the rupture distance of the pristine Au chain. The electronic structure properties can be described by the Blyholder model, which involves the formation of bonding/antibonding pairs of 5σ and 2π* s…
An efficient method for computing the Landauer-Buettiker conductance of an open quantum system within DFT+U is presented. The Hubbard potential is included in electronic structure and transport calculations as a simple renormalization of the non-local pseudopotential coefficients by restricting the integration for the on-site occupations within the cutoff spheres of the pseudopotential. We apply the methodology to the case of an Au monatomic chain in presence of a CO molecule adsorbed on it. We show that the Hubbard U correction removes the spurious magnetization in the pristine Au chain at th…
We study the interplay between disorder and light-matter coupling by considering a disordered one-dimensional chain of lossy dipoles coupled to a multimode optical cavity, through a microscopically derived Hamiltonian. Such a system, hosting polaritonic excitations, may be realized experimentally in a wide range of platforms under strong light-matter coupling. By analyzing both the eigenspectrum and the driven-dissipative transport properties of our system, we find that in the strong-coupling regime, increasing disorder leads almost uncoupled dark states to acquire a photonic part, allowing th…
Electronic transport through a quantum dot chain embodied in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer is theoretically investigated. In such a system, it is found that only for the configurations with the same-numbered quantum dots side-coupled to the quantum dots in the arms of the interferometer, some molecular states of the quantum dot chain decouple from the leads. Namely, in the absence of magnetic flux all odd molecular states decouple from the leads, but all even molecular states decouple from the leads when an appropriate magnetic flux is introduced. Interestingly, the antiresonance position in…
We study a 1D chain of non-interacting bosonic cavities which are subject to nearest-neighbour parametric driving. With a suitable choice of drive phases, this model is strongly analogous to the celebrated Kitaev chain model of a 1D p-wave superconductor. The system exhibits phase-dependent chirality: photons propagate and are amplified in a direction that is determined by the phase of the initial drive or excitation. Further, we find a drastic sensitivity to boundary conditions: for a range of parameters, the boundary-less system has only delocalized, dynamically unstable modes, while a finit…
We report on a theoretical investigation concerning the polaronic effect on the transport properties of a charge carrier in the one-dimensional molecular chain. Our technique is based on the Feynman's path integral approach. Analytical expressions for the frequency-dependent mobility and effective mass of the carrier are obtained as functions of electron-phonon coupling. The result exhibits the crossover from a nearly free particle to a heavily trapped particle. We find that the mobility depends on temperature and decreases exponentially with increasing temperature at low temperature. It exhib…
We investigate electron transport in disordered Hubbard chains contacted to macroscopic leads, via the non-equilibrium Green's functions technique. We observe a cross-over of currents and conductances at finite bias which depends on the relative strength of disorder and interactions. The finite-size scaling of the conductance is highly dependent on the interaction strength, and exponential attenuation is not always seen. We provide a proof that the Coherent Potential Approximation, a widely used method for treating disorder averages, fulfils particle conservation at finite bias with or without…
