In topology there is a theorem of Atiyah, concerning K-theory of classifying space of connected compact Lie group. We consider an algebraic analogue of this theorem. We prove that for a split reductive algebraic group G over a field there is an isomorphism between K-theory of etale classifying space of group G and a completion of the G-equivariant K-theory of the base field.
The aim of this work is to give an algebraic weak version of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. We compute then a few small examples with the elliptic differential operator of order $\leq 1$ coming from the Atiyah class in $\mathrm{Ext}^1_{\mathcal{O}_X}(\mathcal{O}_X,Ω^1_{X/k})$, where $X \longrightarrow \mathrm{Spec}(k)$ is a smooth projective scheme over a perfect field $k$.
The $L^2$-Index Theorem of Atiyah \cite{atiyah} expresses the index of an elliptic operator on a closed manifold $M$ in terms of the $G$-equivariant index of some regular covering $\widetilde{M}$ of $M$, with $G$ the group of covering transformations. Atiyah's proof is analytic in nature. Our proof is algebraic and involves an embedding of a given group into an acyclic one, together with naturality properties of the indices.
We show how derived completion can be used to prove an analogue of Atiyah-Segal completion for the $T$-equivariant Hermitian K-theory of a scheme $X$ with a trivial $T$-action, containing $\tfrac{1}{2}$ and satisfying the resolution property, where $T$ is a split torus of rank $t$. This result is an important first step towards a more general Atiyah-Segal completion theorem for Hermitian K-theory.
In this paper we explain how Morse theory for the Yang-Mills functional can be used to prove an analogue, for surface groups, of the Atiyah-Segal theorem. Classically, the Atiyah-Segal theorem relates the representation ring R(Γ) of a compact Lie group $Γ$ to the complex K-theory of the classifying space $BΓ$. For infinite discrete groups, it is necessary to take into account deformations of representations, and with this in mind we replace the representation ring by Carlsson's deformation $K$--theory spectrum $\K (Γ)$ (the homotopy-theoretical analogue of $R(Γ)$). Our main theorem provides an…
We prove an analogue for odd dimensional manifolds with boundary, in the $b$-calculus setting, of the higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem by Getzler and Wu, thus obtain a natural counterpart of the eta invariant for even dimensional closed manifolds.
In this note we prove the analogue of the Atiyah-Segal completion theorem for equivariant twisted K-theory in the setting of an arbitrary compact Lie group G and an arbitrary twisting of the usually considered type. The theorem generalizes a result by C. Dwyer, who has proven the theorem for finite G and twistings of a more restricted type. While versions of the general result have been known to experts, to our knowledge no proof appears in the current literature. Our goal is to fill in this gap. The proof we give proceeds in two stages. We first prove the theorem in the case of a twisting ari…
In this paper we prove that on a smooth algebraic variety the HKR-morphism twisted by the square root of the Todd genus gives an isomorphism between the sheaf of poly-vector fields and the sheaf of poly-differential operators, both considered as derived Gerstenhaber algebras. In particular we obtain an isomorphism between Hochschild cohomology and the cohomology of poly-vector fields which is compatible with the Lie bracket and the cupproduct. The latter compatibility is an unpublished result by Kontsevich. Our proof is set in the framework of Lie algebroids and so applies without modification…
We show that the Atiyah-Hirzebruch K-theory of spaces admits a canonical generalization for stratified spaces. For this we study algebraic constructions on stratified vector bundles. In particular the tangent bundle of a stratified manifold is such a stratified vector bundle.
Let V be a smooth variety defined over the real numbers. Every algebraic vector bundle on V induces a complex vector bundle on the underlying topological space V(C), and the involution coming from complex conjugation makes it a Real vector bundle in the sense of Atiyah. This association leads to a natural map from the algebraic K-theory of V to Atiyah's ``Real K-theory'' of V(C). Passing to finite coefficients Z/m, we show that the maps from K_n(V ; Z/m) to KR ^{-n}(V(C);Z/m) are isomorphisms when n is at least the dimension of V, at least when m is a power of two. Our key descent result is a …
In this paper, we study the algebraic analogue of the topological Atiyah-Segal completion theorem. We verify this completion theorem for the algebraic equivariant $K$-theory of smooth projective schemes. We also show that the completion theorem fails in general for smooth non-projective schemes.
In this paper we consider the problem of Galois descent for suitably completed algebraic K-theory of fields. One of the main results is a suitable form of rigidity for Borel-style generalized equivariant cohomology with respect to certain spectra. In order to apply this to the problem at hand, we need to invoke a derived Atiyah-Segal completion theorem for pro-groups. In the present paper, the authors apply such a derived completion theorem proven by the first author elsewhere. These two results provide a proof of the Galois descent problem for equivariant algebraic K-theory as formulated by t…
We compare different algebraic structures in twisted equivariant K-Theory for proper actions of discrete groups. After the construction of a module structure over untwisted equivariant K-Theory, we prove a completion Theorem of Atiyah-Segal type for twisted equivariant K-Theory. Using a Universal coefficient Theorem, we prove a cocompletion Theorem for Twisted Borel K-Homology for discrete Groups.
Let T be a torus, X a smooth quasi-compact separated scheme equipped with a T-action, and [X/T] the associated quotient stack. Given any localizing A1-homotopy invariant of dg categories E, we prove that the derived completion of E([X/T]) at the augmentation ideal I of the representation ring R(T) of T agrees with the Borel construction associated to the T-action on X. Moreover, for certain localizing A1-homotopy invariants, we extend this result to the case of a linearly reductive group scheme G. As a first application, we obtain an alternative proof of Krishna's completion theorem in algebra…
Let $V$ be an algebraic variety over $\mathbb R$. The purpose of this paper is to compare its algebraic Witt group $W(V)$ with a new topological invariant $WR(V_{\mathbb C})$, based on symmetric forms on Real vector bundles (in the sense of Atiyah) on the space of complex points of $V$, This invariant lies between $W(V)$ and the group $KO(V_{\mathbb R})$ of $\mathbb R$-linear topological vector bundles on $V_{\mathbb R}$, the set of real points of $V$. We show that the comparison maps $W(V)\to WR(V_{\mathbb C})$ and $WR(V_{\mathbb C})\to KO(V_{\mathbb R})$ that we define are isomorphisms modul…
We prove an analogue for even dimensional manifolds of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer twisted index theorem for trivialized flat bundles. We show that the eta invariant appearing in this result coincides with the eta invariant by Dai and Zhang up to an integer. We also obtain the odd dimensional counterpart for manifolds with boundary of the relative index pairing by Lesch, Moscovici and Pflaum.
This expository paper is an introductory text on topological K-theory and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, suitable for graduate students or advanced undegraduates already possessing a background in algebraic topology. The bulk of the material presented here is distilled from Atiyah's classic "K-Theory" text, as well as his series of seminal papers "The Index of Elliptic Operators" with Singer. Additional topics include equivariant K-theory, the G-index theorem, and Bott's paper "The Index Theorem for Homogeneous Differential Operators". It also includes an appendix with a proof of Bott period…
We formulate analogues, for Noetherian local $\mathbb Q$-algebras which are not necessarily regular, of the injectivity part of Gersten's conjecture in algebraic $K$-theory, and prove them in various cases. Our results suggest that the algebraic $K$-theory of such a ring should be detected by combining the algebraic $K$-theory of both its regular locus and the infinitesimal thickenings of its singular locus.
We introduce an analogue of the Novikov Conjecture on higher signatures in the context of the algebraic geometry of (nonsingular) complex projective varieties. This conjecture asserts that certain "higher Todd genera" are birational invariants. This implies birational invariance of certain extra combinations of Chern classes (beyond just the classical Todd genus) in the case of varieties with large fundamental group (in the topological sense). We prove the conjecture under the assumption of the "strong Novikov Conjecture" for the fundamental group, which is known to be correct for many groups …
Let $V$ be an algebraic variety defined over $\mathbb R$, and $V_{top}$ the space of its complex points. We compare the algebraic Witt group $W(V)$ of symmetric bilinear forms on vector bundles over $V$, with the topological Witt group $WR(V_{top})$ of symmetric forms on Real vector bundles over $V_{top}$ in the sense of Atiyah, especially when $V$ is 2-dimensional. To do so, we develop topological tools to calculate $WR(V_{top})$, and to measure the difference between $W(V)$ and $WR(V_{top})$.
In this paper we continue the work of using the recent advances in algebraic $K$-theory to extend computations done in characteristic $p$ to the mixed characteristic setting using perfectoid rings. We extend the work of Hesselholt-Nikolaus in \cite{Hesselholt_Nikolaus} on the algebraic $K$-Theory of cuspidal curves. We consider both cuspidal curves and the $p$-completion of cuspidal curves. Along the way we also study the $K$-theory of the $p$-completed affine line over a perfectoid ring.
We introduce higher dimensional analogues of simplicial constructions due to Segal and Waldhausen, respectively producing the direct sum and algebraic $K$-theory spectra of an exact category. We then investigate their fibrancy properties, based on the formalism of higher Segal spaces by Dyckerhoff-Kapranov.
