A key open issue for galaxy evolution and formation models is the understanding of the different mechanisms of galaxy assembly at various cosmic epochs. The aim of this study is to derive the global and spatially-resolved metal content in high-redshift galaxies. Using VLT/SINFONI IFU spectroscopy of a first sample of 50 galaxies at z~1.2 in the MASSIV survey, we are able to measure the Ha and [NII]6584 emission lines. Using the N2 ratio as a proxy for oxygen abundance in the interstellar medium, we measure the metallicity of the sample galaxies. We develop a tool to extract spectra in annular regions of these galaxies, leading to a spatially-resolved estimate of the oxygen abundance in each galaxy. We derive a metallicity gradient for 26 galaxies in our sample and discover a significant fraction of galaxies with a "positive" gradient. Using a simple chemical evolution model, we derive infall rates of pristine gas onto the disks. Seven galaxies display a positive gradient at a high confidence level. Four out of these are interacting and one is a chain galaxy. We suggest that interactions might be responsible for shallowing and even inverting the abundance gradient. We also identify two interesting correlations in our sample: a) galaxies with higher gas velocity dispersion have shallower/positive gradients; and b) metal-poor galaxies tend to show a positive gradient whereas metal-rich ones tend to show a negative one. This last observation can be explained by the infall of metal-poor gas into the center of the disks. We address the question of the origin of this infall under the influence of gas flows triggered by interactions and/or cold gas accretion.
Understanding how galaxies evolve and assemble their mass across cosmic time is still a fundamental unsolved issue. To get insight into the various processes of galaxy mass assembly, the Mass Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS (MASSIV) aims at probing the kinematical and chemical properties of a significant and representative sample of high-redshift (0.9 < z < 1.8) star-forming galaxies. This paper presents the selection function, the observing strategy and the global properties of the MASSIV sample. This sample contains 84 star-forming galaxies, selected from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS…
This work aims to provide a first insight into the mass-metallicity (MZ) relation of star-forming galaxies at redshift z~1.4. To reach this goal, we present a first set of nine VVDS galaxies observed with the NIR integral-field spectrograph SINFONI on the VLT. Oxygen abundances are derived from empirical indicators based on the ratio between strong nebular emission-lines (Halpha, [NII]6584 and [SII]6717,6731). Stellar masses are deduced from SED fitting with Charlot & Bruzual (2007) population synthesis models, and star formation rates are derived from [OII]3727 and Halpha emission-line lumino…
Context. Identifying the main processes of galaxy assembly at high redshifts is still a major issue to understand galaxy formation and evolution at early epochs in the history of the Universe. Aims. This work aims to provide a first insight into the dynamics and mass assembly of galaxies at redshifts 1.2<z<1.6, the early epoch just before the sharp decrease of the cosmic star formation rate. Methods. We use the near-infrared integral field spectrograph SINFONI on the ESO-VLT under 0.65 seeing to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy on nine emission line galaxies with 1.2<z<1.6 from the VIMOS…
How mass assembly occurs in galaxies and which process(es) contribute to this activity are among the most highly debated questions in galaxy formation theories. This has motivated our survey MASSIV of 0.9<z<1.9 star-forming galaxies selected from the purely flux-limited VVDS redshift survey. For the first time, we derive the relations between galaxy size, mass, and internal velocity, and the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, from a statistically representative sample of star-forming galaxies. We find a dynamical mass that agrees with those of rotating galaxies containing a gas fraction of ~20%, …
(Abridged) Processes driving mass assembly are expected to evolve on different timescales along cosmic time. A transition might happen around z ~ 1 as the cosmic star formation rate starts its decrease. Identifying the dynamical nature of galaxies on a representative sample is necessary to infer and compare the mass assembly mechanisms across cosmic time. We present an analysis of the kinematics properties of 50 galaxies with 0.9 < z < 1.6 from the MASSIV sample observed with SINFONI/VLT with 4.5x10^9 Msun < M < 1.7x10^11 Msun and 6 Msun/yr < SFR < 300 Msun/yr. This is the largest sample with …
We aim to measure the major merger rate of star-forming galaxies at 0.9 < z <1.8, using close pairs identified from integral field spectroscopy (IFS). We use the velocity field maps obtained with SINFONI/VLT on the MASSIV sample, selected from the star-forming population in the VVDS. We identify physical pairs of galaxies from the measurement of the relative velocity and the projected separation (r_p) of the galaxies in the pair. Using the well constrained selection function of the MASSIV sample we derive the gas-rich major merger fraction (luminosity ratio mu = L_2/L_1 >= 1/4), and, using mer…
Understanding the different mechanisms of galaxy assembly at various cosmic epochs is a key issue for galaxy evolution and formation models. We present MASSIV (Mass Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS) in this context, an on-going survey with VLT/SINFONI aiming to probe the kinematics and chemical abundances of a unique sample of 84 star-forming galaxies selected in the redshift range z ~ 1-2. This large sample, spanning a wide range of stellar masses, is unique at these high redshifts and statistically representative of the overall galaxy population. In this paper, we give an overview of the…
There is cumulative evidence showing that, for the most massive galaxies, the fraction of disk-like objects compared to those with spheroidal properties increases with redshift. However, this evolution is thus far based on the surface brightness study of these objects. To explore the consistency of this scenario, it is necessary to measure the dynamical status of these galaxies. With this aim we have obtained seeing-limited near-infrared integral field spectra in the H-band for 10 massive galaxies (M_{stellar} >10^{11} h_{70}^-2 M_{Sun}) at z~1.4 with SINFONI at the VLT. Our sample is selected…
MASSIV (Mass Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS) is a sample of 84 distant star-forming galaxies observed with the SINFONI Integral Field Unit (IFU) on the VLT. These galaxies are selected inside a redshift range of 0.8 < z < 1.9, i.e. where they are between 3 and 5 billion years old. The sample aims to probe the dynamical and chemical abundances properties of representative galaxies of this cosmological era. On the one hand, close environment study shows that about a third of the sample is involved in major mergers. On the other hand, kinematical analysis revealed that 42% of the sample is …
MASSIV (Massiv Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS) is an ESO large program which consists of 84 star-forming galaxies, spanning in a wide range of stellar masses, observed with the IFU SINFONI on the VLT, in the redshift range 1 < z < 2. To be representative of the normal galaxy population, the sample has been selected from a well-defined, complete and representative parent sample. The kinematics of individual galaxies reveals that 58% of the galaxies are slow rotators, which means that a high fraction of these galaxies should probably be formed through major merger processes which might hav…
The mass assembly of galaxies can proceed through different physical processes. Here we report on the spectroscopic identification of close physical pairs of galaxies at redshifts 2 <z < 4 and discuss the impact of major mergers in shaping galaxies at these early cosmological times. We aim to identify and characterize close physical pairs of galaxies destined to merge and use their properties to infer the contribution of merging processes to the early mass assembly of galaxies. We search for galaxy pairs with a transverse separation r_p < 25 h^{-1} kpc and a velocity difference Delta v < 500 k…
We describe the completed VIMOS VLT Deep Survey, and the final data release of 35016 galaxies and type-I AGN with measured spectroscopic redshifts up to redshift z~6.7, in areas 0.142 to 8.7 square degrees, and volumes from 0.5x10^6 to 2x10^7h^-3Mpc^3. We have selected samples of galaxies based solely on their i-band magnitude reaching i_{AB}=24.75. Spectra have been obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT, integrating 0.75h, 4.5h and 18h for the Wide, Deep, and Ultra-Deep nested surveys. A total of 1263 galaxies have been re-observed independently within the VVDS, and from the VIPERS and MASSIV su…
The environment of the high-z radio galaxy PKS 1138-262 at z~2.2 is a prime example of a forming galaxy cluster. We use deep SINFONI data to perform a detailed study of the kinematics of the galaxies within 60 kpc of the radio core and we link this to the kinematics of the protocluster on the megaparsec scale. Identification of optical emission lines shows that 11 galaxies are at the redshift of the protocluster. The density of line emitters is more than an order of magnitude higher in the core of the protocluster than the larger scale environment. This implies a matter overdensity in the core…
We present an analysis of super-giant molecular complexes (SGMCs) in the overlap region of the Antennae galaxy merger, based on ALMA CO(3-2) interferometry and VLT/SINFONI imaging spectroscopy of H2 1-0 S(1) at angular resolutions of 0.9" and 0.7", respectively. All but one SGMC have multiple velocity components offset from each other by up to 150 km/s. H2 line emission is found in all SGMCs and the kinematics of H2 and CO are well matched. H2/CO line ratios vary by up to a factor of 10 among SGMCs and different velocity components of the same SGMCs. We also identify the CO counterpart of a br…
The zCOSMOS SINFONI project is aimed at studying the physical and kinematical properties of a sample of massive z~1.4-2.5 star-forming galaxies, through SINFONI near-IR integral field spectroscopy (IFS), combined with the multi-wavelength information from the zCOSMOS (COSMOS) survey. The project is based on 1 hour of natural-seeing observations per target, and Adaptive Optics (AO) follow-up for a major part of the sample, which includes 30 galaxies selected from the zCOSMOS/VIMOS spectroscopic survey. This first paper presents the sample selection, and the global physical characterization of t…
We apply the empirical method built for z=0 in the previous work of Wang et al. to a higher redshift, to link galaxy stellar mass directly with its hosting dark matter halo mass at z~0.8. The relation of the galaxy stellar mass and the host halo mass M_infall is constrained by fitting both the stellar mass function and the correlation functions at different stellar mass intervals of the VVDS observation, where M_infall is the mass of the hosting halo at the time when the galaxy was last the central galaxy. We find that for low mass haloes, their residing central galaxies are less massive at hi…
We present a census of the active black hole population at 1<z<2, by constructing the bivariate distribution function of black hole mass and Eddington ratio, employing a maximum likelihood fitting technique. The study of the active black hole mass function (BHMF) and the Eddington ratio distribution function (ERDF) allows us to clearly disentangle the active galactic nuclei (AGN) downsizing phenomenon, present in the AGN luminosity function, into its physical processes of black hole mass downsizing and accretion rate evolution. We are utilizing type-1 AGN samples from three optical surveys (VV…
It is now well established that all galaxies with a massive bulge component harbour a central supermassive black hole (SMBH). The mass of the SMBH correlates with bulge properties such as the bulge mass and the velocity dispersion, which implies that the bulge and the SMBH of a galaxy have grown together during the formation process. The spiral galaxy NGC3368 and the S0 galaxy NGC3489 both host a pseudobulge and a much smaller classical bulge component at the centre. We present high resolution, near-infrared IFU data of these two galaxies, taken with SINFONI at the VLT, and use axisymmetric or…
We present the SINS survey with SINFONI of high redshift galaxies. With 80 objects observed and 63 detected, SINS is the largest survey of spatially resolved gas kinematics, morphologies, and physical properties of star-forming galaxies at z~1-3. We describe the selection of the targets, the observations, and the data reduction. We then focus on the "SINS Halpha sample" of 62 rest-UV/optically-selected sources at 1.3<z<2.6 for which we targeted primarily the Halpha and [NII] emission lines. Only 30% of this sample had previous near-IR spectroscopic observations. As a whole, the SINS Halpha sam…
We present deep and high-resolution HST/NIC2 F160W imaging at 1.6micron of six z~2 star-forming galaxies with existing near-IR integral field spectroscopy from SINFONI at the VLT. The unique combination of rest-frame optical imaging and nebular emission-line maps provides simultaneous insight into morphologies and dynamical properties. The overall rest-frame optical emission of the galaxies is characterized by shallow profiles in general (Sersic index n<1), with median effective radii of ~5kpc. The morphologies are significantly clumpy and irregular, which we quantify through a non-parametric …
Adaptive-Optics assisted SINFONI observations of the central regions of ten early-type galaxies are presented. Based primarily on the SINFONI kinematics, ten black hole masses occupying the high-mass regime of the M_BH-sigma relation are derived using three-integral Schwarzschild models. The effect of dark matter inclusion on the black hole mass is explored. The omission of a dark matter halo in the model results in a higher stellar mass-to-light ratio, especially when extensive kinematic data are used in the model. However, when the diameter of the sphere of influence -- computed using the bl…
Results are presented from NIR spectroscopy of a sample of BzK-selected, massive star-forming galaxies (sBzKs) at 1.5<z<2.3 that were obtained with OHS/CISCO at Subaru and with SINFONI at VLT. Among the 28 sBzKs observed, Ha emission was detected in 14 objects, and for 11 of them the [NII]6583 was also measured. Multiwavelength photometry was also used to derive stellar masses and extinction parameters, whereas Ha and [NII] have allowed us to estimate SFR, metallicities, ionization mechanisms, and dynamical masses. In order to enforce agreement between SFRs from Ha with those derived from rest…
High resolution observations with the NIR adaptive optics integral field spectrograph SINFONI at the VLT proved the existence of massive and young nuclear star clusters in the centres of a sample of Seyfert galaxies. With the help of three-dimensional high resolution hydrodynamical simulations with the Pluto code, we follow the evolution of such clusters, focusing on stellar mass loss. This leads to clumpy or filamentary inflow of gas on large scales (tens of parsec), whereas a turbulent and very dense disc builds up on the parsec scale. In order to capture the relevant physics in the inner re…
Aims. We seek is to identify old and massive galaxies at 0.5<z<2.1 on the basis of the magnesium index MgUV and then study their physical properties. We computed the MgUV index based on the best spectral fitting template of $\sim$3700 galaxies using data from the VLT VIMOS Deep Survey (VVDS) and VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) galaxy redshift surveys. Based on galaxies with the largest signal to noise and the best fit spectra we selected 103 objects with the highest spectral MgUV signature. We performed an independent fit of the photometric data of these galaxies and computed their stellar mass…
We report the detection of ubiquitous powerful nuclear outflows in massive (> 10^11 Msun) z~2 star-forming galaxies (SFGs), which are plausibly driven by an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). The sample consists of the eight most massive SFGs from our SINS/zC-SINF survey of galaxy kinematics with the imaging spectrometer SINFONI, six of which have sensitive high-resolution adaptive optics (AO) assisted observations. All of the objects are disks hosting a significant stellar bulge. The spectra in their central regions exhibit a broad component in Halpha and forbidden [NII] and [SII] line emission, …
We study the properties of luminous stellar clumps identified in deep, high resolution HST/NIC2 F160W imaging at 1.6um of six z~2 star-forming galaxies with existing near-IR integral field spectroscopy from SINFONI at the VLT. Individual clumps contribute ~0.5%-15% of the galaxy-integrated rest-frame ~5000A emission, with median of about 2%; the total contribution of clump light ranges from 10%-25%. The median intrinsic clump size and stellar mass are ~1kpc and log(Mstar[Msun])~9, in the ranges for clumps identified in rest-UV or line emission in other studies. The clump sizes and masses in th…
Using new spectroscopic observations obtained as part of the VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey (VUDS), we perform a systematic search for overdense environments in the early universe ($z>2$) and report here on the discovery of Cl J0227-0421, a massive protocluster at $z=3.29$. This protocluster is characterized by both the large overdensity of spectroscopically confirmed members, $δ_{gal}=10.5\pm2.8$, and a significant overdensity in photometric redshift members. The halo mass of this protocluster is estimated, by a variety of methods, to be roughly $3\times10^{14}$ $\mathcal{M}_{\odot}$ at $z\sim3.3$, …
The masses of the most massive supermassive black holes (SMBHs) predicted by the M_BH-sigma and M_BH-luminosity relations appear to be in conflict. Which of the two relations is the more fundamental one remains an open question. NGC 1332 is an excellent example that represents the regime of conflict. It is a massive lenticular galaxy which has a bulge with a high velocity dispersion sigma of ~320 km/s; bulge--disc decomposition suggests that only 44% of the total light comes from the bulge. The M_BH-sigma and the M_BH-luminosity predictions for the central black hole mass of NGC 1332 differ by…
We present new Gemini-North/NIRI and VLT/SINFONI H-band spectroscopy for a flux limited sample of 40 z~4.8 active galactic nuclei, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The sample probably contains the most massive active black holes (BHs) at this redshift and spans a broad range in bolometric luminosity, 2.7x10^46< L_bol < 2.4x10^47 erg/sec. The high-quality observations and the accurate fitting of the MgII(2800A) line, enable us to study, systematically, the distribution of BH mass (M_BH) and normalized accretion rate (L/L_Edd) at z~4.8. We find that 10^8 < M_BH < 6.6x10^9 M_sun, with …
We present a detailed observational analysis of how merger-driven turbulence may regulate the star-formation efficiency during galaxy interactions and set the initial conditions for the formation of super star clusters. Using VLT/SINFONI, we obtained near-infrared imaging spectroscopy of a small region in the Antennae overlap region, coincident with the supergiant molecular cloud 2 (SGMC 2). We find extended H2 line emission across much of the 600 pc field-of-view, traced at sub-arcsecond spatial resolution. The data also reveal a compact H2 source with broad lines and a dynamical mass Mdyn 10…
We model the evolution of the mean galaxy occupation of dark-matter halos over the range $0.1<z<1.3$, using the data from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). The galaxy projected correlation function $w_p(r_p)$ was computed for a set of luminosity-limited subsamples and fits to its shape were obtained using two variants of Halo Occupation Distribution models. These provide us with a set of best-fitting parameters, from which we obtain the average mass of a halo and average number of galaxies per halo. We find that after accounting for the evolution in luminosity and assuming that we are largely …
Most galaxy evolutionary models require quasar feedback to regulate star formation in their host galaxies. In particular, at high redshift, models expect that feedback associated with quasar-driven outflows is so efficient that the gas in the host galaxy is largely swept away or heated up, hence suppressing star formation in massive galaxies. We observationally investigate this phenomenon by using VLT-SINFONI integral field spectroscopy of the luminous quasar 2QZJ002830.4-281706 at z=2.4. The spectra sample the optical emission lines redshifted into the near-IR. The [OIII]5007 emission-line ki…
As part of the SINS/zC-SINF surveys of high-z galaxy kinematics, we derive the radial distributions of H-alpha surface brightness, stellar mass surface density, and dynamical mass at ~2 kpc resolution in 19 z~2 star-forming disks with deep SINFONI AO spectroscopy at the ESO VLT. From these data we infer the radial distribution of the Toomre Q-parameter for these main-sequence star forming galaxies (SFGs), covering almost two decades of stellar mass (10^9.6 to 10^11.5 solar masses). In more than half of our SFGs, the H-alpha distributions cannot be fit by a centrally peaked distribution, such a…
We present a multiwavelength study of the AGN-host starburst galaxy PKS 0529-549 at z~2.6. We use (1) new ALMA observations of the dust continuum and of the [CI] 370 um line, tracing molecular gas, (2) SINFONI spectroscopy of the [OIII] 5007 Ang line, tracing ionized gas, and (3) ATCA radio continuum images, tracing synchrotron emission. Both [CI] and [OIII] show regular velocity gradients, but their systemic velocities and position angles differ by ~300 km/s and ~30 degrees, respectively. The [CI] is consistent with a rotating disc, aligned with the dust and stellar continuum, while the [OIII…
Exploring the origin of Ly-alpha nebulae (blobs) requires measurements of their gas kinematics that are impossible with only the resonant, optically-thick LyA line. To define gas motions relative to the systemic velocity of the blob, the LyA line must be compared with an optically-thin line like Halpha, which is not much altered by radiative transfer effects. We obtain optical and NIR spectra of the two brightest LyA blobs from Yang et al. sample using the Magellan/MagE and VLT/SINFONI. Both the LyA and Halpha lines confirm that these blobs lie at the survey redshift, z~2.3. Within each blob, …
Hierarchical models of galaxy formation predict that the properties of a dark matter halo depend on the large-scale environment surrounding the halo. As a result of this correlation, we expect massive haloes to be present in larger number in overdense regions than in underdense ones. Given that a correlation exists between a galaxy stellar mass and the hosting dark matter halo mass, the segregation in dark matter halo mass should then result in a segregation in the distribution of stellar mass in the galaxy population. In this work we study the distribution of galaxy stellar mass and rest-fram…
We investigate the evolution of galaxy clustering for galaxies in the redshift range 2.0<$z$<5.0 using the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS). We present the projected (real-space) two-point correlation function $w_p(r_p)$ measured by using 3022 galaxies with robust spectroscopic redshifts in two independent fields (COSMOS and VVDS-02h) covering in total 0.8 deg$^2$. We quantify how the scale dependent clustering amplitude $r_0$ changes with redshift making use of mock samples to evaluate and correct the survey selection function. Using a power-law model $ξ(r) = (r/r_0)^{-γ}$ we find that the corr…
We have obtained high-resolution data of the z 2 ring-like, clumpy star-forming galaxy (SFG) ZC406690 using the VLT/SINFONI with AO (in K-band) and in seeing-limited mode (in H- and J-band). Our data includes all of the main strong optical emission lines: [OII], [OIII], Ha, Hb, [NII] and [SII]. We find broad, blueshifted Ha and [OIII] emission line wings in the spectra of the galaxy's massive, star-forming clumps (sigma \sim 85 km s^-1) and even broader wings (up to 70% of the total Ha flux, with sigma \sim 290 km s^-1) in regions spatially offset from the clumps by \sim 2 kpc. The broad emiss…
We present near-infrared spectra, obtained with SINFONI and XShooter observations at ESO VLT, of nine dusty, red QSOs at 1.2<z<2.6. The sources are hard X-ray detected, characterized by cold absorption (N_H>10^{21} - 10^{22} cm^{-2}) and show a broad Ha component in the NIR spectra. We complement this sample with twelve additional sources taken from the literature with similar properties resulting in a total sample of 21 X-ray obscured, intermediate type (1.8-1.9), dusty reddened QSOs. From the broad Ha line we have computed the BH masses through the virial formula and derived Eddington ratios…
Quasar feedback in the form of powerful outflows is invoked as a key mechanism to quench star formation in galaxies, preventing massive galaxies to over-grow and producing the red colors of ellipticals. On the other hand, some models are also requiring `positive' AGN feedback, inducing star formation in the host galaxy through enhanced gas pressure in the interstellar medium. However, finding observational evidence of the effects of both types of feedback is still one of the main challenges of extragalactic astronomy, as few observations of energetic and extended radiatively-driven winds are a…
The barred grand-design spiral M83 (NGC 5236) is one of the most studied galaxies given its proximity, orientation, and particular complexity. Nonetheless, many aspects of the central regions remain controversial conveying our limited understanding of the inner gas and stellar kinematics, and ultimately of the nucleus evolution. In this work, we present AO VLT-SINFONI data of its central ~235x140 pc with an unprecedented spatial resolution of ~0.2 arcsec, corresponding to ~4 pc. We have focused our study on the distribution and kinematics of the stars and the ionised and molecular gas by study…
