We present a model atmosphere analysis of cool hydrogen-rich white dwarfs observed at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) with the X-shooter spectrograph. The intermediate-dispersion and high signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra allowed us to conduct a detailed analysis of hydrogen and heavy element line profiles. In particular, we tested various prescriptions for hydrogen Balmer line broadening parameters and determined the effective temperature and surface gravity of each star. Three objects (NLTT 1675, 6390 and 11393) show the presence of heavy elements (Mg, Al, Ca, or Fe). Our abundance analysis revealed a relatively high iron to calcium ratio in NLTT 1675 and NLTT 6390. We also present an analysis of spectropolarimetric data obtained at the VLT using the focal reducer and low dispersion spectrograph (FORS) and we established strict upper limits on the magnetic field strengths in three of the DAZ white dwarfs and determined the longitudinal magnetic field strength in the DAZ NLTT 10480. The class of DAZ white dwarfs comprises objects that are possibly accreting material from their immediate circumstellar environment and the present study contributes in establishing class properties.
As part of a mid-infrared spectroscopic survey of young stars with the Spitzer Space Telescope, an unclassified red emission line object was discovered. Based on its high ionization state indicated by the Spitzer spectrum, this object could either be a dusty Supernova Remnant (SNR) or a Planetary Nebula (PN). In this research note, the object is classified and the available spectroscopic data are presented to the community for further analysis. UV/optical/NIR spectra were obtained during the science verification run of the VLT/X-shooter. A large number of emission lines are identified allowing…
X-shooter is one of the most popular instruments at the VLT, offering instantaneous spectroscopy from 300 to 2500 nm. We present the design of a single polarimetric unit at the polarization-free Cassegrain focus that serves all three spectrograph arms of X-shooter. It consists of a calcite Savart plate as a polarizing beam-splitter and a rotatable crystal retarder stack as a "polychromatic modulator". Since even "superachromatic" wave plates have a wavelength range that is too limited for X-shooter, this novel modulator is designed to offer close-to-optimal polarimetric efficiencies for all St…
We present multi-instruments and multi-wavelengths observations of the famous LBV star Pistol Star. These observations are part of a larger program about early O stars at different metallicities. The Pistol star has been claimed as the most massive star known, with 250 solar masses. We present the preliminary results based on X-Shooter spectra, as well as the observations performed with the VLTI-AMBER and the VLT-NACO adaptive optics. The X-shooter spectrograph allows to obtain simultaneously a spectrum from the UV to the K-band with a resolving power of $\sim$15000. The preliminary results ob…
As part of the VLT/X-shooter science verification, we obtained the first optical medium-resolution spectrum of a previously identified bright O-type object in NGC55, an LMC-like galaxy at a distance of \sim2.0 Mpc. Based on the stellar and nebular spectrum, we investigate the nature and evolutionary status of the central object(s) and its influence on the surrounding interstellar medium. We conclude that the source, NGC55_C1_31, is a composite object, likely a stellar cluster, which contains one or several hot (T_eff \simeq 50000 K) WN stars with a high mass-loss rate (\sim3 \times 10^{-5} M_\…
We report the discovery and characterization of a new symbiotic star of the accreting-only variety, which we observed in the optical/near-infrared (NIR) with VLT/X-Shooter and in the X-rays/ultraviolet with Swift/UVOT+XRT. The new symbiotic star, THA 15-31, was previously described as a pre-main sequence star belonging to the Lupus~3 association. Our observations, ancillary data, and Gaia EDR3 parallax indicate that THA 15-31 is a symbiotic star composed of an M6III red giant and an accreting companion, is subject to E(B-V)=0.38 reddening, and is located at a distance of ~12 kpc and at 1.8 kpc…
Studies of the formation and evolution of young stars and their disks rely on the knowledge of the stellar parameters of the young stars. The derivation of these parameters is commonly based on comparison with photospheric template spectra. Furthermore, chromospheric emission in young active stars impacts the measurement of mass accretion rates, a key quantity to study disk evolution. Here we derive stellar properties of low-mass pre-main sequence stars without disks, which represent ideal photospheric templates for studies of young stars. We also use these spectra to constrain the impact of c…
We present broad-band mid-resolution X-Shooter/VLT spectra for four brown dwarfs of the TW Hya association. Our targets comprise substellar analogs representing the different evolutionary phases in young stellar evolution: For the two diskless brown dwarfs, TWA-26 and TWA-29, we determine the stellar parameters and we study their chromospheric emission line spectrum. For the two accreting brown dwarfs, TWA-27 and TWA-28, we estimate the mass accretion rates from empirical correlations between emission line luminosities and the accretion luminosity.

The aim of the project is to characterise both components of the nearest brown dwarf sytem to the Sun, WISE J104915.57-531906.1 (=Luhman16AB) at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. We obtained high signal-to-noise intermediate-resolution (R~6000-11000) optical (600-1000 nm) and near-infrared (1000-2480nm) spectra of each component of Luhman16AB, the closest brown dwarf binary to the Sun, with the X-Shooter instrument on the Very Large Telescope. We classify the primary and secondary of the Luhman16 system as L6-L7.5 and T0+/-1, respectively, in agreement with previous measurements published…
Earth's atmosphere imprints a large number of telluric absorption and emission lines on astronomical spectra, especially in the near infrared, that need to be removed before analysing the affected wavelength regions. These lines are typically removed by comparison to A- or B-type stars used as telluric standards that themselves have strong hydrogen lines, which complicates the removal of telluric lines. We have developed a method to circumvent that problem. For our IDL software package tellrem we used a recent approach to model telluric absorption features with the line-by-line radiative trans…
RW Aur A is a CTTS that has suddenly undergone three major dimming events since 2010. We aim to understand the dimming properties, examine accretion variability, and derive the physical properties of the inner disc traced by the CO ro-vibrational emission at NIR wavelengths (2.3 mic). We compared two epochs of X-Shooter observations, during and after the dimming. We modelled the rarely detected CO bandhead emission in both epochs to examine whether the inner disc properties had changed. The SED was used to derive the extinction properties of the dimmed spectrum and compare the infrared excess …
Transitional disks (TDs) are thought to be a late evolutionary stage of protoplanetary disks with dust depleted inner regions. The mechanism responsible for this depletion is still under debate. To constrain the models it is mandatory to have a good understanding of the properties of the gas content of the inner disk. Using X-Shooter broad band -UV to NIR- medium resolution spectroscopy we derive the stellar, accretion, and wind properties of a sample of 22 TDs. The analysis of these properties allows us to put strong constraints on the gas content in a region very close to the star (<0.2 AU) …
The nearby Eta Chamaeleontis association is a collection of 4-10 Myr old stars with a disk fraction of 35-45%. In this study, the broad wavelength coverage of VLT/X-Shooter is used to measure the stellar and mass accretion properties of 15 low mass stars in the Eta Chamaeleontis association. For each star, the observed spectrum is fitted with a non-accreting stellar template and an accretion spectrum obtained from assuming a plane-parallel hydrogen slab. Five of the eight stars with an IR disk excess show excess UV emission, indicating ongoing accretion. The accretion rates measured here are s…
The process of massive star ($M\geq8~M_\odot$) formation is still poorly understood. Observations of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) are challenging due to their rarity, short formation timescale, large distances, and high circumstellar extinction. Here, we present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of a population of MYSOs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We took advantage of the spectral resolution and wavelength coverage of X-shooter (300-2500 nm), mounted on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope, to detect characteristic spectral features in a dozen MYSO can…
We present the results of our observations of eight magnetic Herbig Ae/Be stars obtained with the X-shooter spectrograph mounted on UT2 at the VLT. X-shooter provides a simultaneous, medium-resolution and high-sensitivity spectrum over the entire wavelength range from 300 to 2500 nm. We estimate the mass accretion rates M_acc of the targets from 13 different spectral diagnostics using empiric calibrations derived previously for T Tauri-type stars and brown dwarfs. We have estimated the mass accretion rates of our targets, which range from 2x10^-9 to 2x10^-7 M_sun/yr. Furthermore, we have found…
We present the first observations of a probable brown dwarf, obtained with the new spectrograph X-shooter mounted on the UT2@VLT. The target (2MASS J053825.4-024241) is a 0.06 Msun object in the star-formation region sigma Orionis. The X-shooter spectrum covers simultaneously the whole range from UV to NIR (300-2500 nm). The J053825.4-024241 spectrum is rich in emission lines that are typical of accreting young object and clearly shows the Balmer jump. Moreover, many photospheric atomic and molecular absorption lines yield the spectral type and confirm that the object is young. We compute the …
We present the first pilot study of jets from young stars conducted with X-shooter, on ESO/VLT. As it offers simultaneous, high quality spectra in the range 300-2500 nm X-shooter is uniquely important for spectral diagnostics in jet studies. We chose to probe the accretion/ejection mechanisms at low stellar masses examining two targets with well resolved continuous jets lying on the plane of the sky, ESO-HA 574 in Chamaleon I, and Par-Lup3-4 in Lupus III. The mass of the latter is close to the sub-stellar boundary (Mstar=0.13 Msun). A large number of emission lines probing regions of different…
The determination of the brown dwarf binary fraction may contribute to the understanding of the substellar formation mechanisms. Unresolved brown dwarf binaries may be revealed through their peculiar spectra or the discrepancy between optical and near-infrared spectral type classification. We obtained medium-resolution spectra of 22 brown dwarfs with these characteristics using the X-Shooter spectrograph at the VLT. We aimed to identify brown dwarf binary candidates, and to test if the BT-Settl 2014 atmospheric models reproduce their observed spectra. To find binaries spanning the L-T boundary…
Context: Extremely metal-poor stars (EMP) are very rare objects that hold in their atmospheres the fossil record of the chemical composition of the early phases of Galactic evolution. Finding these objects and determining their chemical composition provides important constraints on these early phases. Aims: Using a carefully designed selection method, we chose a sample of candidate EMP stars from the low resolution spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and observed them with X-Shooter at the VLT to confirm their metallicities and determine abundances for as many elements as possible. Method:…
We present new VLT/X-Shooter optical and NIR spectra of a sample of 17 candidate young low-mass stars and BDs in the rho-Ophiucus cluster. We derived SpT and Av for all the targets, and then we determined their physical parameters. All the objects but one have M*<0.6 Msun, and 8 have mass below or close to the hydrogen-burning limit. Using the intensity of various emission lines present in their spectra, we determined the Lacc and Macc for all the objects. When compared with previous works targeting the same sample, we find that, in general, these objects are not as strongly accreting as previ…
We present an analysis of X-Shooter spectra of the polluted hydrogen-rich white dwarfs (DAZ) NLTT 888 and NLTT 53908. The spectra of NLTT 53908 show strong, Zeeman-split calcium lines (CaII H&K and Ca I $λ4226$) and the star appears to be a close relative of the polluted magnetic white dwarf (DAZH) NLTT 10480, while the spectra of NLTT 888 show narrow lines of calcium and iron. A comparison of the DAZ NLTT 888 and the DAZH NLTT 53908 with other class members illustrates the diversity of environment and formation circumstances surrounding these objects. In particular, we find that the incidence…
The knowledge of the structure and dynamics of AGB-star atmospheres is crucial to better understand the mass loss. The tomographic method, that relies on the design of spectral masks containing lines forming in given ranges of optical depths in the stellar atmosphere, is an ideal technique for this purpose. It is applied to high-resolution spectro-interferometric VLTI/AMBER observations of the Mira-type AGB star S Ori. First, the interferometric visibilities are extracted at wavelengths contributing to the tomographic masks and fitted to those computed from a uniform disk model. This allows th…
Dynamic model atmospheres of Mira stars predict variabilities in the photospheric radius and in atmospheric molecular layers which are not yet strongly constrained by observations. Here we measure the variability of the oxygen-rich Mira star R Peg. We used K band spectro-interferometry with a spectral resolution of about 4000 obtained at four epochs between post-maximum and minimum visual phases employing the newly available GRAVITY beam combiner at the VLTI. Our observations show a continuum radius that is anti-correlated with the visual lightcurve. Uniform disc (UD) angular diameters at a ne…
We present an analysis of intermediate-dispersion spectra and photometric data of the newly identified cool, polluted white dwarf NLTT19868. The spectra obtained with X-shooter on the Very Large Telescope (VLT)-Melipal show strong lines of calcium, and several lines of magnesium, aluminium and iron. We use these spectra and the optical-to-near infrared spectral energy distribution to constrain the atmospheric parameters of NLTT19868. Our analysis shows that NLTT19868 is iron poor with respect to aluminium and calcium. A comparison with other cool, polluted white dwarfs shows that the Fe to Ca …
We have identified a new, cool magnetic white dwarf in the New Luyten Two-Tenths (NLTT) catalogue. The high proper-motion star NLTT 10480 (mu=0.5"/year) shows weak Zeeman-split lines of calcium, as well as characteristic Halpha and beta Zeeman triplets. Using VLT X-shooter spectra we measured a surface-averaged magnetic field B_S ~ 0.5 MG. The relative intensity of the pi and sigma components of the calcium and hydrogen lines imply a high inclination (i > 60 deg). The optical-to-infrared V-J colour index and the CaI/CaII ionization balance indicate a temperature between 4900 and 5200 K, while …
Purely photometric models can be used to determine the binary parameters of eclipsing cataclysmic variables with a high degree of precision. However, the photometric method relies on a number of assumptions, and to date there have been very few independent checks of this method in the literature. We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the P=90.9 min eclipsing cataclysmic variable OY Carinae obtained with X-shooter on the VLT, in which we detect the donor star from K I lines in the J-band. We measure the radial velocity amplitude of the donor star K2 = 470.0 +/- 2.7 km/s, consistent with pred…
We have spectroscopically confirmed a brown dwarf mass companion to the hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf NLTT5306. The white dwarf's atmospheric parameters were measured using Sloan Digital Sky Survey and X-Shooter spectroscopy as T_eff=7756+/-35K and log(g)=7.68+/-0.08, giving a mass for the primary of M_WD=0.44+/-0.04 M_sun, at a distance of 71+/-4 pc with a cooling age of 710+/-50 Myr. The existence of the brown dwarf secondary was confirmed through the near-infrared arm of the X-Shooter data and a spectral type of dL4-dL7 was estimated using standard spectral indices. Combined radial veloci…
Cool evolved stars are the main source of chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium. Understanding their mass loss offers a unique opportunity to study the cycle of matter. We discuss interferometric studies and their comparison to latest state-of-the-art dynamic model atmospheres. They show broad agreement for asymptotic giant branch stars. For red supergiants, however, current models cannot explain observed extensions by far, pointing to missing physical processes in their models, and uncertainties in our general understanding of mass loss. We present ongoing imaging and time-series obs…
Multiwavelength observations of the young massive cluster Westerlund 1 have revealed evidence for a large number of OB supergiant and Wolf-Rayet binaries. However, in most cases these findings are based on secondary binary characteristics such as hard X-ray emission and/or non-thermal radio spectra and hence provide little information on binary properties such as mass ratio and orbital period. To overcome this shortcoming we have initiated a long temporal baseline, VLT/FLAMES+GIRAFFE multi-epoch radial velocity survey that will provide the first direct constraints on these parameters. This stu…
Aims. Through the ATOMIUM project, based on an ALMA large program, we aim to present a consistent view of a sample of 17 nearby cool evolved stars (Aymptotic Giant Branch and red supergiant stars). Methods. Here we present VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL polarimetric maps obtained in the visible of 14 out of the 17 ATOMIUM sources. They were obtained contemporaneously with the ALMA high spatial resolution data. To help interpret the polarized signal, we produced synthetic maps of light scattering by dust, through 3D radiative transfer simulations with the RADMC3D code. Results. The degree of linear polariza…
In the era of modern digital sky surveys, uncertainties in the flux of stellar standards are commonly the dominant systematic error in photometric calibration and can often affect the results of higher-level experiments. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectrophotometry, which is based on computed model atmospheres for three hot (Teff > 30,000 K) pure-hydrogen (DA) white dwarfs, is currently considered the most reliable and internally consistent flux calibration. However many next generation facilities (e.g. Harmoni on E-ELT, Euclid and JWST) will focus on IR observations, a regime in which w…
The current and planned high-resolution, high-multiplexity stellar spectroscopic surveys, as well as the swelling amount of under-utilized data present in public archives have led to an increasing number of efforts to automate the crucial but slow process to retrieve stellar parameters and chemical abundances from spectra. We present MyGIsFOS, a code designed to derive atmospheric parameters and detailed stellar abundances from medium - high resolution spectra of cool (FGK) stars. We describe the general structure and workings of the code, present analyses of a number of well studied stars rep…
