We suggest a simple Gaussian Lagrangian variational scheme for the reduced time-dependent quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in cigar and disk configurations, respectively. The variational approximation for stationary states and breathing oscillation dynamics in reduced dimensions agrees well with the numerical solution of the GP equation even for moderately large short-range and dipolar nonlinearities. The Lagrangian variational scheme also provides much physical insight about soliton formation in dipolar BEC.
TWe suggest a method to construct exactly solvable Gross-Pitaevskii type equations, especially the variable-coefficient high-order Gross-Pitaevskii type equations. We show that there exists a relation between the Gross-Pitaevskii type equations. The Gross-Pitaevskii equations connected by the relation form a family. In the family one only needs to solve one equation and other equations in the family can be solved by a transform. That is, one can construct a series of exactly solvable Gross-Pitaevskii type equations from one exactly solvable Gross-Pitaevskii type equation. As examples, we consi…
We study the Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a three-dimensional spherically symmetrical potential. Exact solutions to the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation are obtained for properly modulated radial nonlinearity. The solutions contain vortices with different winding numbers and exhibit the shell-soliton feature in the radial distributions.
We introduce a dissipation term in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation that describes the stimulated relaxation of condensed bosons due to scattering with a different type of particles. This situation applies to Bose-Einstein condensates of quasi-particles in the solid state, such as magnons and excitons. Our model is compatible with the phenomenology of superfluidity: supercurrents are stable up to a critical speed and decay when they are faster.
We present several exact solutions to the coupled nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations which describe the motion of the one-dimensional spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates. The nonlinear density-density interactions are decoupled by making use of the properties of Jacobian elliptical functions. The distinct time factors in each hyperfine state implies a "Lamor" procession in these solutions. Furthermore, exact time-evolving solutions to the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equations are constructed through the spin-rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The spin-polarizations and density distribu…
We derive a canonical formalism for the hydrodynamic representation of the Gross-Pitaevskii field (nonlinear Schrödinger field), where the density and the phase of the condensate form a canonical pair of conjugate field variables. To do so, we treat the meanfield as a singular Lagrangian system and apply both the Dirac-Bergmann and Faddeev-Jackiw methods. The Faddeev-Jackiw method is found to be a more direct approach to the problem.
Above-barrier reflection of cold alkali atoms by resonant laser light was considered analytically within the Gross-Pitaevskii approximation. Correction for the reflection coefficient because of a weak nonlinearity of the stationary Schroedinger equation has been derived using multiscale analysis as a form of perturbation theory. The nonlinearity adds spatial harmonics to linear incident and reflecting waves. It was shown that the role of nonlinearity increases when the kinetic energy of an atom is nearly to the height of the potential barrier. Results are compared to the known numerical deriva…
Atom interferometers using Bose-Einstein condensates are fundamentally limited by a phase diffusion process that arises from atomic interactions. The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is here used to accurately calculate the diffusion rate for a Bragg interferometer. It is seen to agree with a Thomas-Fermi approximation at large atom numbers and a perturbative approximation at low atom numbers. The diffusion times obtained are generally longer than the coherence times observed in experiments to date.
Using the linearized version of the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we calculate the dynamic response of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas to periodic density and particle perturbations. The zero temperature limit of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is used to evaluate the corresponding quantum fluctuations induced by the elementary excitations in the ground state. In uniform conditions the predictions of Bogoliubov theory, including the infrared divergency of the particle distribution function and the quantum depletion of the condensate, are exactly reproduced by Gross-Pitaevskii theo…
We consider a dilute and ultracold bosonic gas of weakly-interacting atoms. Within the framework of quantum field theory we derive a zero-temperature modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation with beyond-mean-field corrections due to quantum depletion and anomalous density. This result is obtained from the stationary equation of the Bose-Einstein order parameter coupled to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations of the out-of-condensate field operator. We show that, in the presence of a generic external trapping potential, the key steps to get the modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation are the semiclassical a…
We show that the dark soliton of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) density of a system of weakly repulsive bosons, also describes that of a system of strongly repulsive hard core bosons at half filling. This connection establishes a relationship between the GPE soliton and the magnetic soliton of an easy-plane ferromagnet, where the BEC density relates to the square of the in-plane magnetization of the system. This mapping between well known solitons in two distinct physical systems provides an intuitive understanding of various characteristi…
It has been proven theoretically for bosons with two-body repulsive interaction potentials in the dilute limit that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation provides the exact energy and density per particle as does the basic many-particle Schroedinger equation [Lieb and Seiringer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 170409 (2002)]. Here, we investigate the overlap of the Gross-Pitaevskii and exact ground state wavefunctions. It is found that this overlap is always smaller than unity and may even vanish in spite of the fact that both wavefunctions provide the same energy and density per particle. Consequences are discu…
The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is discussed at the level of an advanced course on statistical physics. In the standard literature the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is usually obtained in the framework of the second quantisation formalism, which in many cases goes beyond the material covered in many advanced undergraduate courses. In this paper, we motivate the derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) in relationship to concepts from statistical physics, highlighting a number of applications from dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate to the excitations of the gas cloud. This paper may be h…
Effective spin-orbit coupling can be created in cold atom systems using atom-light interaction. We study the BECs in an optical lattice using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with spin-orbit coupling. Bloch states for the linear equation are numerically obtained, and compared with stationary solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with nonlinear terms. Various vortex lattice states are found when the spin-orbit coupling is strong.
We show that the dark soliton of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) density of a system of weakly repulsive bosons, also describes that of a system of strongly repulsive hard core bosons at half filling. As a consequence of this, the GPE soliton gets related to the magnetic soliton in an easy-plane ferromagnet, where it describes the square of the in-plane magnetization of the system. These relationships are shown to be useful in understanding various characteristics of solitons in these distinct many-body systems.
A comparative study is done of the propagation of sound pulses in elongated Bose liquids and Bose-Einstein condensates in Gross-Pitaevskii and logarithmic models, by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation. It is shown that in the linear regime the propagation of small density fluctuations is essentially one-dimensional in both models, in the direction perpendicular to the cross section of a liquid's lump. Under these approximations, it is shown that the speed of sound scales as a square root of particle density in the case of the Gross-Pitaevskii liquid/condensate, but it is constant in a cas…
Quantum phenomena appear in a macroscopic scale in Bose-Einstein condensates. The Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation describes the dynamics of the weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. The GP equation has a form of the Schroedinger equation with self-interaction. The coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations are used to describe some mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates. In this paper, we will show some numerical results of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations without self-interaction, which has a form of nonlinearly-coupled Schroedinger equations. We demonstrate that the macroscopic oscillation a…
We develop a numerical method for solving the spin-1 Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The basis of our work is a two-way splitting of the spin-1 evolution equation that leads to two exactly solvable flows. We use this to implement a second-order and a fourth-order symplectic integration method. These are the first fully symplectic methods for evolving spin-1 condensates. We develop two non-trivial numerical tests to compare our methods against two other approaches.
We consider a quantum above-barrier reflection of a Bose-Einstein condensate by a one-dimensional rectangular potential barrier, or by a potential well, for nonlinear Schroedinger equation (Gross-Pitaevskii equation) with a small nonlinearity. The most interesting case is realized in resonances when the reflection coefficient is equal to zero for the linear Schroedinger equation. Then the reflection is determined only by small nonlinear term in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A simple analytic expression has been obtained for the reflection coefficient produced only by the nonlinearity. An anal…
We developed a new and powerful algorithm by which numerical solutions for excited states in a gravito optical surface trap have been obtained. They represent solutions in the regime of strong nonlinearities of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation. In this context we also shortly review several approaches which allow, in principle, for calculating excited state solutions. It turns out that without modifications these are not applicable to strongly nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The importance of studying excited states of Bose-Einstein condensates is also underlined by a recent experiment of …
We construct exact ring soliton-like solutions of the cylindrically symmetric (i.e., radial) Gross- Pitaevskii equation with a potential, using the similarity transformation method. Depending on the choice of the allowed free functions, the solutions can take the form of stationary dark or bright rings whose time dependence is in the phase dynamics only, or oscillating and bouncing solutions, related to the second Painlevé transcendent. In each case the potential can be chosen to be time-independent.
We develop numerical methods for solving the spin-2 Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The basis of our work is a two-way splitting of this evolution equation that leads to two exactly solvable subsystems. Utilizing second-order and fourth-order composition schemes we realize two fully symplectic integration algorithms, the first such algorithms for evolving spin-2 condensates. We demonstrate the accuracy of these algorithms against other methods on application to an exact continuous wave solution that we derive.
By solving numerically the governing Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we study the dynamics of Kelvin waves on a superfluid vortex. After determining the dispersion relation, we monitor the turbulent decay of Kelvin waves with energy initially concentrated at large length scales. At intermediate length scales, we find that the decay is consistent with scaling predictions of theoretical models. Finally we report the unexpected presence of large-length scale phonons in the system.
We consider systems of N bosons trapped on the two-dimensional unit torus, in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime, where the scattering length of the repulsive interaction is exponentially small in the number of particles. We show that low-energy states exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation, with almost optimal bounds on the number of orthogonal excitations.
We consider N trapped bosons in R 3 interacting via a pair potential w which has a long range of dipolar type. We show the convergence of the energy and of the minimizers for the many-body problem towards those of the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii functional, when N tends to infinity. In addition to the usual cubic interaction term, the latter has the long range dipolar interaction. Our results hold under the assumption that the two-particle interaction is scaled in the form N 3$β$--1 w(N $β$ x) for some 0 $\le$ $β$ \textless{} $β$max with $β$max = 1/3 + s/(45 + 42s) where s is related to the growt…
In this paper we present analytical breather solutions of the three-dimensional nonlinear generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We use an Ansatz to reduce the three-dimensional equation with space- and time-dependent coefficients into an one-dimensional equation with constant coefficients. The key point is to show that both the space- and time-dependent coefficients of the nonlinear equation can contribute to modulate the breather excitations. We briefly discuss the experimental feasibility of the results in Bose-Einstein condensates.
We derive the time-dependent dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation from the N-body Schr{ö}dinger equation. More precisely we show a norm approximation for the solution of the many body equation as well as the convergence of its one-body reduced density matrix towards the orthogonal projector onto the solution of the dipolar GP equation. We consider the interpolation regime where interaction potential is scaled like $N^{3β--1} w(N^β(x -- y))$, the range of validity of $β$ depends on the stability of the ground state problem. In particular we can prove the convergence on the one-body density ma…
We study the dipolar Gross-Piteavskii functional with the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction term without trapping potential and in the regime where the dipole-dipole interaction dominates the repulsive short-range interaction. We show that, above a critical mass, the functional admits minimizers and we prove their regularity and exponential decay. We also estimate the critical mass in terms of the parameters of the system.
We examine on the static and dynamical properties of quantum knots in a Bose-Einstein condensate. In particular, we consider the Gross-Pitaevskii model and revise a technique to construct ab initio the condensate wave-function of a generic torus knot. After analysing its excitation energy, we study its dynamics relating the topological parameter to its translational velocity and characteristic size. We also investigate the breaking mechanisms of non shape-preserving torus knots confirming an evidence of universal decaying behaviour previously observed.
We study a generalized dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii-type model arising in the description of exciton-polariton condensates. We derive global in-time existence results and various a-priori estimates for this model posed on the one-dimensional torus. Moreover, we analyze in detail the long-time behavior of spatially homogenous solutions and their respective steady states and present numerical simulations in the case of more general initial data. We also study the convergence to the corresponding adiabatic regime, which results in a single damped-driven Gross-Pitaveskii equation.
We numerically investigate the quench expansion dynamics of an initially confined state in a two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii lattice in the presence of external disorder. The expansion dynamics is conveniently described in the control parameter space of the energy and norm densities. The expansion can slow down substantially if the expected final state is a non-ergodic non-Gibbs one, regardless of the disorder strength. Likewise stronger disorder delays expansion. We compare our results with recent studies for quantum many body quench experiments.
We present algorithms for the ab-initio determination of the temperature ($T$) dependence of the mutual-friction coefficients $α$ and $α'$ and the normal-fluid density $ρ_{\rm n}$ in the two-dimensional (2D) Galerkin-truncated Gross-Pitaevskii system. Our algorithms enable us to determine $α(T)$, even though fluctuations in 2D are considerably larger than they are in 3D. We also examine the implications of our measurements of $α'(T)$ for the Iordanskii force, whose existence is often questioned.
We introduce a non-commutative generalization of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for one-dimensional quantum gasses and quantum liquids. This generalization is obtained by applying the time-dependent variational principle to the variational manifold of continuous matrix product states. This allows for a full quantum description of many body system ---including entanglement and correlations--- and thus extends significantly beyond the usual mean-field description of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is known to fail for (quasi) one-dimensional systems. By linearizing around a stationary soluti…
