We present the most sensitive ultraviolet observations of Supernova 1987A to date. Imaging spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope-Cosmic Origins Spectrograph shows many narrow (dv \sim 300 km/s) emission lines from the circumstellar ring, broad (dv \sim 10 -- 20 x 10^3 km/s) emission lines from the reverse shock, and ultraviolet continuum emission. The high signal-to-noise (> 40 per resolution element) broad LyA emission is excited by soft X-ray and EUV heating of mostly neutral gas in the circumstellar ring and outer supernova debris. The ultraviolet continuum at λ> 1350A can be explained by HI 2-photon emission from the same region. We confirm our earlier, tentative detection of NV λ1240 emission from the reverse shock and we present the first detections of broad HeII \lambda1640, CIV \lambda1550, and NIV] \lambda1486 emission lines from the reverse shock. The helium abundance in the high-velocity material is He/H = 0.14 +/- 0.06. The NV/H-alpha line ratio requires partial ion-electron equilibration (T_{e}/T_{p} \approx 0.14 - 0.35). We find that the N/C abundance ratio in the gas crossing the reverse shock is significantly higher than that in the circumstellar ring, a result that may be attributed to chemical stratification in the outer envelope of the supernova progenitor. The N/C abundance ratio may have been stratified prior to the ring expulsion, or this result may indicate continued CNO processing in the progenitor subsequent to the expulsion of the circumstellar ring.
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometric results for NGC 6402, a highly reddened very luminous Galactic globular cluster (GC). Recent spectroscopic observations of its red giant stars have shown a quite peculiar behavior in the chemistry of its multiple populations. These results have prompted UV and optical HST observations aimed at obtaining the cluster's "Chromosome map" (ChM), an efficient tool to classify GCs and characterize their multiple populations. We find that the discontinuity in the abundance distributions of O, Mg, Al and Na inferred from spectroscopy is more nuanced i…
The "evolved main-sequence" channel is thought to contribute significantly to the population of AM CVn type systems in the Galaxy, and also to the number of cataclysmic variables detected below the period minimum for hydrogen rich systems. CSS120422:J111127+571239 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey in April 2012. Its period was found to be 56 minutes, well below the minimum, and the optical spectrum is clearly depleted in hydrogen relative to helium, but still has two orders of magnitude more hydrogen than AM CVn stars. Doppler tomography of the H$α$ line hinted at a spiral structure ex…
We present Hubble Space Telescope + Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (HST+COS) data of the eclipsing double white dwarf binary CSS 41177. Due to the temperature difference between the two white dwarfs, the HST+COS far-ultraviolet data are dominated by the hot, primary white dwarf and allow us to precisely measure its temperature (T1). Using eclipse observations, we also tightly constrain the temperature of the cooler secondary white dwarf (T2). Our results, where T1 = 22439 +/- 59 K and T2 = 10876 +/- 32 K, with the uncertainties being purely statistical, place the secondary inside and close to the…
We present new ultraviolet spectra of the peculiar white dwarf (WD) H1504+65, obtained with COS on HST. H1504+65 is the hottest known WD (Teff= 200,000 K) and has an atmosphere mainly composed of C and O, augmented with high amounts of Ne and Mg. This object is unique and the origin of its surface chemistry is completely unclear. We probably see the naked core of either a C--O WD or even a O--Ne--Mg WD. In the latter case, this would be the first direct proof that such WDs can be the outcome of single-star evolution. The new observations were performed to shed light on the origin of this myste…
We present the first quantitative UV spectroscopic analysis of resolved OB stars in IC1613. Because of its alleged very low metallicity (<~1/10 Zo, from HII regions), studies in this Local Group dwarf galaxy could become a significant step forward from the SMC towards the extremely metal-poor massive stars of the early Universe. We present HST-COS data covering the ~1150-1800Å wavelength range with resolution R~2500. We find that the targets do exhibit wind features, and these are similar in strength to SMC stars. Wind terminal velocities were derived from the observed PCygni profiles with the…
H1504+65 is an extremely hot white dwarf (effective temperature Teff = 200,000 K) with a carbon-oxygen dominated atmosphere devoid of hydrogen and helium. This atmospheric composition was hitherto unique among hot white dwarfs (WDs), and it could be related to recently detected cooler WDs with C or O dominated spectra. The origin of the H and He deficiency in H1504+65 is unclear. To further assess this problem, we performed ultraviolet spectroscopy with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In accordance with previous far-ultraviolet spectroscopy perfor…
We present a new iron abundance analysis of the hyper metal-poor star HE$~$1327-2326, based on Fe II lines detected in its UV spectral range for the first time. In a Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) spectrum, five new Fe II lines could be measured. A Si I line was also detected for the first time. We determine a 1D Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) Fe II abundance of [Fe II/H] = -5.99$\pm$0.25. We also investigate departures from LTE for both Fe I and Fe II lines. Guided by 3D Non-LTE (NLTE) analyses of other well-studied metal-poor stars, we identify potential "residual" 3D effects in HE…
We report the first detection of molecular hydrogen (H$_{2}$) absorption in the Lyman-$α$ emission line profiles of two classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs), DF Tau and V4046 Sgr, observed by \emph{HST}/COS. This absorption is the energy source for many of the Lyman-band H$_{2}$ fluorescent lines commonly seen in the far-ultraviolet spectra of CTTSs. We find that the absorbed energy in the H$_{2}$ pumping transitions from a portion of the Lyman-$α$ line significantly differ from the amount of energy in the resulting fluorescent emission. By assuming additional absorption in the H I Lyman-$α$ profil…
We have used HST/COS to obtain a series of 4 FUV (915-2148A) spectroscopic observations of the prototypical dwarf nova U Geminorum during its cooling following a two-week outburst. Our FUV spectral analysis of the data indicates that the white dwarf (WD) cools from a temperature of 41,500 K, 15 days after the peak of the outburst, to 36,250 K, 56 days after the peak of the outburst, assuming a massive WD (log(g)=8.8) and a distance of 100.4 pc. These results are self-consistent with a 1.1 solar mass WD with a 5,000 km radius. The spectra show many absorption lines of but no emission features. …
Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) are young (< 10 Myr), cool stars that actively accrete matter from a disk. They show strong, broad and asymmetric, atomic FUV emission lines. Neither the width, nor the line profile is understood. Likely, different mechanisms influence the line profile; the best candidates are accretion, winds and stellar activity. We monitored the C IV 1548/1550 Ang doublet in the nearby, bright CTTS TW Hya with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (HST/COS) to correlate it with i) the cool wind, as seen in COS NUV Mg II line profiles, ii) the photometric period…
H I Ly$α$ (1215.67 Å) and the O I triplet (1302.17, 1304.86, and 1306.03 Å) are bright far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission lines that trace the stellar chromosphere. Observations of stellar Ly$α$ and O I using the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) most sensitive FUV spectrograph, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS), are contaminated with geocoronal emission, or airglow. This study demonstrates that airglow emission profiles as observed by COS are sufficiently stable to create airglow templates which can be reliably subtracted from the data, recovering the underlying stellar flux. We developed a grap…
We present observations and initial analysis from an HST/STIS program to obtain the first co-spatial, UV-optical spectra of ten Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe). Our primary objective was to measure the critical emission lines of carbon and nitrogen with unprecedented S/N and spatial resolution over UV-optical range, with the ultimate goal of quantifying the production of these elements in low- and intermediate-mass stars. Our sample was selected from PNe with a near-solar metallicity, but spanning a broad range in N/O. This study, the first of a series, concentrates on the observations and em…
The debris disk surrounding $β$ Pictoris has a gas composition rich in carbon and oxygen, relative to solar abundances. Two possible scenarios have been proposed to explain this enrichment. The preferential production scenario suggests that the gas produced may be naturally rich in C and O, while the alternative preferential depletion scenario states that the enrichment has evolved to the current state from a gas with solar-like abundances. In the latter case, the radiation pressure from the star expels the gas outwards, leaving behind species less sensitive to stellar radiation such as C and …
Nitrogen is an important element in various fields of stellar and Galactic astronomy, and the solar nitrogen abundance is crucial as a yardstick for comparing different objects in the cosmos. In order to obtain a precise and accurate value for this abundance, we carried out N i line formation calculations in a 3D radiative-hydrodynamic STAGGER model solar atmosphere, in full 3D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE), using a model atom that includes physically-motivated descriptions for the inelastic collisions of N i with free electrons and with neutral hydrogen. We selected five N i l…
Rapid rotation in massive stars imposes a latitudinal variation in the mass loss from radiatively driven winds that can lead to enhanced mass loss at the poles (with little angular momentum loss) and/or equator (with maximal angular momentum loss). Here we present an examination of the stellar wind lines of the two O-type stars with the fastest known equatorial velocities, VFTS 102 ($V\sin i = 610 \pm 30$ km/s; O9:Vnnne+) and VFTS 285 ($V\sin i = 609 \pm 29$ km/s; O7.5 Vnnn) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Ultraviolet spectra of both stars were obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Or…
KOI-81 is a totally eclipsing binary discovered by the Kepler mission that consists of a rapidly rotating B-type star and a small, hot companion. The system was forged through large scale mass transfer that stripped the mass donor of its envelope and spun up the mass gainer star. We present an analysis of UV spectra of KOI-81 that were obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope that reveal for the first time the spectral features of the faint, hot companion. We present a double-lined spectroscopic orbit for the system that yields mass estimates of 2.92 M_sun an…
Gaseous and dust debris disks around white dwarfs (WDs) are formed from tidally disrupted planetary bodies. This offers an opportunity to determine the composition of exoplanetary material by measuring element abundances in the accreting WD's atmosphere. A more direct way to do this is through spectral analysis of the disks themselves. Currently, the number of chemical elements detected through disk emission-lines is smaller than that of species detected through lines in the WD atmospheres. We assess the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of one well-studied object (SDSS J122859.93+104032.9) to se…
Observations have revealed that the elemental abundances of carbon and oxygen in the warm molecular layers of some protoplanetary disks are depleted compared to those is the interstellar medium by a factor of ~10-100. Meanwhile, little is known about nitrogen. To investigate the time evolution of nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen elemental abundances in disks, we develop a one-dimensional model that incorporates dust settling, turbulent diffusion of dust and ices, as well as gas-ice chemistry including the chemistry driven by stellar UV/X-rays and the galactic cosmic rays. We find that gaseous CO i…
