We demonstrate sub-100-attosecond timing jitter optical pulse trains generated from free-running, 77.6-MHz repetition-rate, mode-locked Er-fiber lasers. At -0.002(\pm0.001) ps2 net cavity dispersion, the rms timing jitter is 70 as (224 as) integrated from 10 kHz (1 kHz) to 38.8 MHz offset frequency, when measured by a 24-as-resolution balanced optical cross-correlator. To our knowledge, this result corresponds to the lowest rms timing jitter measured from any mode-locked fiber lasers so far. The measured result also agrees fairly well with the Namiki-Haus analytic model of quantum-limited timing jitter in stretched-pulse fiber lasers.
We investigate the high-frequency timing jitter spectral density of mode-locked fiber lasers in different mode-locked regimes. Quantum noise-limited timing jitter spectra of mode-locked-regime-switchable Yb fiber lasers are measured up to the Nyquist frequency with sub-100 as resolution. The integrated rms timing jitter of soliton, stretched-pulse, and self-similar Yb fiber lasers is measured to be 1.8 fs, 1.1 fs, and 2.9 fs, respectively, when integrated from 10 kHz to 40 MHz. The distinct behavior of jitter spectral density related to pulse formation mechanisms is revealed experimentally for…
We demonstrate ultra-low timing jitter optical pulse trains from free- running, 80 MHz repetition rate, mode-locked Yb-fiber lasers. Timing jitter of various mode-locking conditions at close-to-zero intra-cavity dispersion (-0.004 to +0.002 ps2 range at 1040 nm center wavelength) is characterized using a sub-20-attosecond-resolution balanced optical cross-correlation method. The measured lowest rms timing jitter is 175 attoseconds when integrated from 10 kHz to 40 MHz (Nyquist frequency) offset frequency range, which corresponds to the record-low timing jitter from free-running mode-locked fib…
We propose a semi-analytical method of calculating the timing fluctuations in mode-locked semiconductor lasers and apply it to study the effect of delayed coherent optical feedback on pulse timing jitter in these lasers. The proposed method greatly reduces computation times and therefore allows for the investigation of the dependence of timing fluctuations over greater parameter domains. We show that resonant feedback leads to a reduction in the timing jitter and that a frequency-pulling region forms about the main resonances, within which a timing jitter reduction is observed. The width of th…
We study the effect of noise on the dynamics of passively mode-locked semiconductor lasers both experimentally and theoretically. A method combining analytical and numerical approaches for estimation of pulse timing jitter is proposed. We investigate how the presence of dynamical features such as wavelength bistability affects timing jitter.
We demonstrate 14.3-attosecond timing jitter [integrated from 10 kHz to 94 MHz offset frequency] optical pulse trains from 188-MHz repetition-rate mode-locked Yb-fiber lasers. In order to minimize the timing jitter, we shorten the non-gain fiber length to shorten the pulsewidth and reduce excessive higher-order nonlinearity and nonlinear chirp in the fiber laser. The measured jitter spectrum is limited by the amplified spontaneous emission limited quantum noise in the 100 kHz - 1 MHz offset frequency range, while it was limited by the relative intensity noise-converted jitter in the lower offs…
We demonstrate a method that enables accurate timing jitter spectral density characterization of free-running mode-locked laser oscillators over more than 10-decade of Fourier frequency from mHz to tens MHz range. The method is based on analyzing both the input voltage noise to the slave laser and the output voltage noise from the balanced optical cross- correlator (BOC), when two mode-locked lasers are synchronized in repetition rate by the BOC. As a demonstration experiment, timing jitter spectrum of a free-running mode-locked Er-fiber laser with a dynamic range of >340 dB is measured over F…
We demonstrate an asymmetric dual-loop feedback scheme to suppress external cavity side-modes induced in self-mode-locked quantum-dash lasers with conventional single and dual-loop feedback. In this letter, we achieved optimal suppression of spurious tones by optimizing the length of second delay time. We observed that asymmetric dual-loop feedback, with large (~8x) disparity in cavity lengths, eliminates all external-cavity side-modes and produces flat RF spectra close to the main peak with low timing jitter compared to single-loop feedback. Significant reduction in RF linewidth and reduced t…
We show that a 1.13-GHz repetition rate optical pulse train with 0.70 fs high-frequency timing jitter (integration bandwidth of 17.5 kHz - 10 MHz, where the measurement instrument-limited noise floor contributes 0.41 fs in 10 MHz bandwidth) can be directly generated from a free-running, single-mode diode-pumped Yb:KYW laser mode-locked by single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-coated mirrors. To our knowledge, this is the lowest timing jitter optical pulse train with the GHz repetition rate ever measured. If this pulse train is used for direct sampling of 565-MHz signals (Nyquist frequency of t…
We demonstrate ultralow phase noise 10-GHz microwave signal generation from a free-running mode-locked Er-fiber laser with -142 and -157 dBc/Hz single-sideband absolute phase noise at 10- and 100-kHz offset frequencies, respectively. The absolute RMS timing jitter is 1.5 fs when integrated from 1-kHz to 5-GHz (Nyquist frequency) offset frequency. In the 10-kHz to 10-MHz integration bandwidth typically used for microwave generators, the RMS integrated jitter is 0.49 fs. The Er-fiber laser is operated in the stretched-pulse regime at close-to-zero dispersion to minimize the phase noise of extrac…
Based on the first-order perturbation theory of soliton, the Gordon-Haus timing jitter induced by amplifier noise is found to be non-Gaussian distributed. Compared with Gaussian distribution given by the linearized perturbation theory, both frequency and timing jitter have larger tail probability. The timing jitter has a larger discrepancy to Gaussian distribution than that of frequency jitter.
High-precision optical pulse trains distribution via fibre links has made huge impacts in many fields. In most published works, the accuracies are still fundamentally limited by some unavoidable noises, such as thermal and shot noise from conventional photodiodes, thermal noise from mixers. Here, we demonstrate a new high-precision timing distribution system by using highly-precision phase detector to overcome the limitations. Instead of using photodiodes and microwave mixers, we use several fibre Sagnac-loop-based optical-microwave phase detectors to realize optical-electrical conversion and …
Using the maximum-likelihood detector (MLD) of a soliton with timing jitter and noise, other than walk-out of the bit interval, timing jitter does not degrade the performance of MLD. When the MLD is simulated with important sampling method, even with a timing jitter standard deviation the same as the full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of the soliton, the signal-to-noise (SNR) penalty is just about 0.2 dB. The MLD performs better than conventional scheme to lengthen the decision window with additive noise proportional to the window wide.
We experimentally investigate the RF linewidth and timing jitter over a wide range of delay tuning in a self-mode-locked two-section quantum dash lasers emitting at ~ 1.55 micron and operating at ~ 21 GHz repetition rate subject to single and dual optical feedback into gain section. Various feedback conditions are investigated and optimum levels determined for narrowest linewidth and reduced timing jitter for both single and dual loop configurations. We demonstrate that dual loop feedback, with the shorter feedback cavity tuned to be fully resonant, followed by fine tuning of the phase of the …
We report a simple and compact design of a dispersion compensated mode-locked Yb:fiber oscillator based on a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). The fully polarization maintaining (PM) fiber integrated laser features a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) for dispersion compensation and a fiber integrated compact non-reciprocal phase bias device, which is alignment-free. The main design parameters were determined by numerically simulating the pulse evolution in the oscillator and by analyzing their impact on the laser performance. Experimentally, we achieved an 88 fs compressed pulse durati…
We report on the characterization of the timing stability of passively mode-locked discrete mode diode laser sources. These are edge-emitting devices with a spatially varying refractive index profile for spectral filtering. Two devices with a mode-locking frequency of 100 GHz are characterized. The first device is designed to support a comb of six modes and generates near Fourier limited 1.9 ps pulses. The second supports four primary modes resulting in a sinusoidal modulation of the optical intensity. Using a cross-correlation technique, we measured a 20 fs pulse to pulse timing jitter for th…
The characteristic function of soliton phase jitter is found analytically when the soliton is perturbed by amplifier noise. In additional to that from amplitude jitter, the nonlinear phase noise due to frequency and timing jitter is also analyzed. Because the nonlinear phase noise is not Gaussian distributed, the overall phase jitter is also non-Gaussian. For a fixed mean nonlinear phase shift, the contribution of nonlinear phase noise from frequency and timing jitter decreases with distance and signal-to-noise ratio.
Visible light photon counters (VLPCs) offer many attractive features as photon detectors, such as high quantum efficiency and photon number resolution. We report measurements of the single-photon timing jitter in a VLPC, a critical performance factor in a time-correlated single-photon counting measurement, in a fiber-coupled closed-cycle cryocooler. The measured timing jitter is 240 ps full-width-at-half-maximum at a wavelength of 550 nm, with a dark count rate of 25 000 counts per second. The timing jitter increases modestly at longer wavelengths to 300 ps at 1000 nm, and increases substantia…
Counter-propagating all-normal dispersion (CANDi) fiber laser is an emerging high-energy single-cavity dual-comb laser source. Its relative timing jitter (RTJ), a critical parameter for dual-comb timing precision and spectral resolution, has not been comprehensively investigated. In this paper, we enhance the state-of-the-art CANDi fiber laser pulse energy from 1 nJ to 8 nJ. We then introduce a novel reference-free RTJ characterization technique that provides shot-to-shot measurement capability at femtosecond precision for the first time. The measurement noise floor reaches 1.6x10-7 fs2/Hz, an…
Investigation on the relative phase evolution between two bounded optical solitons is essential for its potential applications in development of larger telecommunication capacity of optical fiber transmission lines, resolution improvement in advancing ultrafast characterization approaches and development of all-optical information storage. Here we characterized relative comb-line phase jitter power spectral density (PSD) of a soliton molecule pair generated from a passively mode-locked Er:fiber laser. Through tracking the intensity difference between two selected wavelengths in one certain spe…
Pulse trains emitted from dual-comb systems are designed to have low relative timing jitter, making them useful for many optical measurement techniques such as optical ranging and spectroscopy. However, the characterization of low-jitter dual-comb systems is challenging because it requires measurement techniques with high sensitivity. Motivated by this challenge, we developed a technique based on an optical heterodyne detection approach for measuring the relative timing jitter of two pulse trains. The method is suitable for dual-comb systems with essentially any repetition rate difference. Fur…
We report experimental studies of the influence of symmetric dual-loop optical feedback on the RF linewidth and timing jitter of self-mode-locked two-section quantum dash lasers emitting at 1550 nm. Various feedback schemes were investigated and optimum levels determined for narrowest RF linewidth and low timing jitter, for single-loop and symmetric dual-loop feedback. Two symmetric dual-loop configurations, with balanced and unbalanced feedback ratios, were studied. We demonstrate that unbalanced symmetric dual loop feedback, with the inner cavity resonant and fine delay tuning of the outer l…
We demonstrate feedback and harmonic locking of chip-scale slot-type optomechanical oscillators to external low-noise reference clocks, with suppressed timing jitter by three orders of magnitude. The feedback and compensation techniques significantly reduce the close-to-carrier phase noise, especially within the locking bandwidth for the integral root-mean-square timing jitter. Harmonic locking via high-order carrier signals is also demonstrated with similar phase noise and integrated root-mean-square timing jitter reduction. The chip-scale optomechanical oscillators are tunable over an 80-kHz…

We studied the effect of the external magnetic field and photon flux on timing jitter in photon detection by straight superconducting NbN nanowires. At two wavelengths 800 and 1560 nm, statistical distribution in the appearance time of the photon count exhibits Gaussian shape at small times and exponential tail at large times. The characteristic exponential time is larger for photons with smaller energy and increases with external magnetic field while variations in the Gaussian part of the distribution are less pronounced. Increasing photon flux drives the nanowire from quantum detection mode …
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy systems based on resonator-internal repetition-rate modulation, such as SLAPCOPS [12] and ECOPS [11], rely on electronic phase detectors which are typically prone to exhibit both a non-negligible random and systematic timing error. This limits the quality of the recorded information significantly. Here, we present the results of our recent attempt to reduce these errors in our own electronic phase detection systems. A more than six-fold timing-jitter reduction from 59.0 fs to 8.6 fs led to a significant increase in both exploitable terahertz bandwidth and sig…

We report a new technique for the realization of second-order correlation ($g^2(τ)$) measurement under low-repetition-rate pulsed excitation (1 kHz), with timing jitter calibrated to restore lateral $g^2(τ)$ curves and determine $g^2(0)$. We use CdSe nanowire (NW) laser to demonstrate the jitter-calibrated $g^2(τ)$ measurement, where $g^2(0)$ evolution shows the laser emission transition process. The exciting pulses are split into reference and excitation channels, which enables the jitter calibration when the exciting pulses have significant timing jitter and low repetition rate. After using …
Attosecond measurements reveal new physical insights in photo ionization dynamics from atoms, molecules and condensed matter. However, on such time scales even small timing jitter can significantly reduce the time resolution in pump-probe measurements. Here, we propose a novel technique to retrieve attosecond delays from a well established attosecond interferometric technique, referred to as Reconstruction of Attosecond Beating By Interference of Two-photon Transition (RABBITT), which is unaffected by timing jitter and significantly improves the precision of state-of-the-art experiments. We re…
We present a novel approach for the analysis of passively mode-locked semiconductor lasers that allows for efficient parameter sweeps and time jitter analysis. It permits accessing the ultra-low repetition rate regime where pulses become localized states. The analysis including slow (e.g. thermal) processes or transverse dynamics becomes feasible. Our method bridges the divide between the phenomenological, yet highly efficient, pulse iterative model that is the Haus master equation, and the more involved first principle descriptions relying on time delayed equations. Our iterative functional m…
We report on the design, fabrication and measurement of travelling-wave superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) integrated with polycrystalline diamond photonic circuits. We analyze their performance both in the near-infrared wavelength regime around 1600 nm and at 765 nm. Near-IR detection is important for compatibility with the telecommunication infrastructure, while operation in the visible wavelength range is relevant for compatibility with the emission line of silicon vacancy centers in diamond which can be used as efficient single-photon sources. Our detectors feature h…
Here, ultra-low relative phase jitters over a wide optical spectrum were achieved for dual Ti:Sapphire optical frequency combs. The two optical frequency combs were independently phase-locked to a Sr optical lattice clock laser delivered through a commercial optical fiber network. We confirmed that the relative phase jitters between the two combs integrated from 8.3 mHz to 200 kHz were below 1 rad, corresponding to a relative linewidth of below 8.3 mHz, over the entire wavelength of the optical frequency combs ranging from 550 nm to 1020 nm. Our work paves the way for ultrahigh-precision dual-…
Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) causes fluctuations of pulse energy, of the optical phase and of the timing of the pulse intensity envelope in a mode-locked laser or frequency comb. Starting from the assumption of one ASE photon per longitudinal laser mode and roundtrip, we rederive analytic equations for the three fundamental types of quantum noise in a laser. To this end, we analyze the interference of the coherent intracavity field and a spectrally localized ASE photon as a function of wavelength and phase of the latter. Performing an integration over all wavelengths and phases and tak…
The sensitivity of homodyne timing measurements with femtosecond lasers is only limited by the amplitude and phase noise. We describe a novel method to analyze the phase noise of a Ti:Sapph oscillator relative to the standard quantum limit. The broadband passive cavity used to this aim also filters lowest levels of classical noise at sidebands above 100kHz detection frequency. Leading to quantum limited carrier-envelope-phase noise at $μ$s-timescales, it can improve the sensitivity of a highly sensitive, homodyne timing jitter measurement by 2 orders of magnitude.
Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors are a key technology for quantum information and science due to their high efficiency, low timing jitter, and low dark counts. In this work, we present a detector for single 1550 nm photons with up to 78% detection efficiency, timing jitter below 50 ps FWHM, 158 counts/s dark count rate - as well as a world-leading maximum count rate of 1.5 giga-counts/s at 3 dB compression. The PEACOQ detector (Performance-Enhanced Array for Counting Optical Quanta) comprises a linear array of 32 straight superconducting niobium nitride nanowires which span the…
Silicon single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) is a core device for single-photon detection in the visible and the near-infrared range, and widely used in many applications. However, due to limits of the structure design and device fabrication for current silicon SPADs, the key parameters of detection befficiency and timing jitter are often forced to compromise. Here, we propose a nanostructured silicon SPAD, which achieves high detection efficiency with excellent timing jitter simultaneously over a broad spectral range. The optical and electric simulations show significant performance enhanceme…
We predict and observe the appearance of an excess noise factor due to the non-Hermiticity of the modes of two actively harmonically mode-locked lasers. The non uniform distribution of gain and losses in the ring cavities of these lasers causes a non-orthogonality of the longitudinal modes, which is responsible for an increase of the rate of spontaneous emission falling in the lasing pulsed mode. This leads to an increase of the phase noise of the pulse train generated by these lasers by more than 20 dB at some offset frequencies. This degradation can be prohibitive for the use of these lasers…
We synchronize a 8.06-GHz microwave signal from a voltage-controlled oscillator with an optical pulse train from a 77.5- MHz mode-locked Er-fiber laser using a fiber-based optical-microwave phase detector. The residual phase noise between the optical pulse train and the synchronized microwave signal is -133 dBc/Hz (-154 dBc/Hz) at 1 Hz (5 kHz) offset frequency, which results in 838 as integrated rms timing jitter [1 Hz - 1 MHz]. The long-term residual phase drift is 847 as (rms) measured over 2 hours, which reaches 4\times10^{-19} fractional frequency instability at 1800 s averaging time. This…
In this work, for the first time to our knowledge, stability and noise of a thin-disk mode-locked Yb:YAG oscillator operating in both negative- (NDR) and positive-dispersion (PDR) regimes have been analyzed systematically within a broad range of oscillator parameters. It is found, that the scaling of output pulse energy from 7 $μ$J up to 55 $μ$J in the NDR requires a dispersion scaling from -0.013 ps$^{2}$ up to -0.31 ps$^{2}$ to provide the pulse stability. Simultaneously, the energy scaling from 6 $μ$J up to 90 $μ$J in the PDR requires a moderate dispersion scaling from 0.0023 ps$^{2}$ up to…
Higher repetition-rate optical pulse trains have been desired for various applications such as high-bit-rate optical communication, photonic analogue-to-digital conversion, and multi- photon imaging. Generation of multi GHz and higher repetition-rate optical pulse trains directly from mode-locked oscillators is often challenging. As an alternative, harmonic injection locking can be applied for extra-cavity repetition-rate multiplication (RRM). Here we have investigated the operation conditions and achievable performances of all-fibre, highly tunable harmonic injection locking-based pulse RRM. …
Single-cavity dual-comb lasers are a new class of ultrafast lasers which have a wide possible application space including pump-probe sampling, optical ranging, and gas absorption spectroscopy. However, to this date laser cavity multiplexing usually came to the trade-off in laser performance or relative timing noise suppression. We present a new method for multiplexing a single laser cavity to support a pair of noise-correlated modes. These modes share all intracavity components and take a near-common path, but do not overlap on any active elements. We implement the method with an 80-MHz laser …
Dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) frequency combs - also known as microcombs - have arguably created a new field in cavity nonlinear photonics, with a strong cross-fertilization between theoretical, experimental, and technological research. Spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) not only add new degrees of freedom to ultrafast laser technology, but also provide new insights for implementing analogue computers and heuristic optimizers with photonics. Here, we combine the principles of DKS and STML for the first time to demonstrate the STML DKS by developing an unexplored ultrahigh-quality-factor Fabry…

Controlling the carrier envelope phase (CEP) in mode-locked lasers over practically long timescales is crucial for real-world applications in ultrafast optics and precision metrology. We present a hybrid solution that combines a feed-forward technique to stabilize the phase offset in fast timescales and a feedback technique that addresses slowly varying sources of interference and locking bandwidth limitations associated with gain media with long upper-state lifetimes. We experimentally realize the hybrid stabilization system in an Er:Yb:glass mode-locked laser and demonstrate 75 hours of stab…

Mutual phase coherence is the most crucial factor in asynchronous optical sampling system, and its enhancement is commonly achieved by phase-locking both femtosecond lasers to a shared narrow-linewidth cavity-stabilized laser. Here we report such a system with a low residual optical phase jitter at a level of 0.04 rad in a Fourier frequency band from 1 Hz to 5 MHz around 1.55 μm, corresponding to a timing jitter of 30 as. The residual phase jitter reaches 1 rad at a Fourier frequency between 0.06 Hz and 0.1 Hz, from which the phase-coherence time is inferred at least 10 s. The multi-heterodyne…
Synchronous laser-microwave networks delivering attosecond timing precision are highly desirable in many advanced applications, such as geodesy, very-long-baseline interferometry, high-precision navigation and multi-telescope arrays. In particular, rapidly expanding photon science facilities like X-ray free-electron lasers and intense laser beamlines require system-wide attosecond-level synchronization of dozens of optical and microwave signals up to kilometer distances. Once equipped with such precision, these facilities will initiate radically new science by shedding light on molecular and a…
